<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="23150740" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Daniel-Daggers" source="keywords">Daniel Daggers</keyword>, star of the Netflix show "<keyword id="23150739" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="buying-london" source="Orion">Buying London</keyword>," sells some of the UK's most expensive homes.</li><li>He spoke to BI about what selling multimillion-dollar properties to the supersuccessful is like.</li></ul><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Daniel Daggers, a luxury real-estate agent and star of the Netflix show </em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-buying-london-luxury-real-estate-market-super-prime-property-2024-5" target="_blank"><em>"Buying London."</em></a><em> It has been edited for length and clarity.</em><br /><br />I came from humble beginnings.<br /><br />When I was a kid, I would never have believed it if someone had told me, "You're going to be representing the most successful people on the planet and bouncing around the world, seeing incredible homes."<br /><br />When I was 17, a short internship with a local real-estate agent led to a full time job. I spent 10 years carrying the keys, driving around, and learning the industry.<br /><br />Then, I moved into a big firm where I started dealing with the <keyword id="23150738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="super-prime-market" source="keywords">super-prime market</keyword> — properties valued in excess of $12.8 million. Now, I run my own agency.<br /><br /><h2>There's nuance in what makes a property super-prime</h2>People misinterpret shiny as luxury. It's not about that.<br /><br />Maybe it's an incredible location, the specification of finishes is out of this world, or the live style, meaning how you live in a property, is groundbreaking.<br /><br />There's all this nuance and when you get a number of those assets right, that's what makes a super-prime property.<br /><br />To be an agent at this level, you need to use different language with your client — be more articulate, provide more detailed information, and have a different attitude to work.<br /><br />A knowledge of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-real-estate-estate-gift-tax-avoidance-wealth-planning-inheritance-2024-4">taxation</a>, structure, interior design, art, and the legal system becomes more important because you're in more of an advisory role.<br /><br /><h2>This job gives me a wider understanding of what's shaping our world</h2>These people are often very time-poor. There is no finishing work at 6 p.m. You have to be available by phone for help or advice at any moment in the day.<br /><br />But working at the top end of the market is very enjoyable. I am blessed with access to some of the best minds on the planet.<br /><br />We talk about anything, not just real estate. It could be children, society, art, the legal system, friends, technology, how the industry's changing — the much more macro, big-picture things.<br /><br />It gives you a wider understanding of what's shaping our world and how business takes place.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Daniel Daggers stands against a white background in a white shirt and suit trousers smiling with his hands in his pockets." height="1280" width="855" msid="112782190" hostid="261"></div><h2>Buyers are getting younger</h2>I noticed about a decade ago that buyers were becoming much younger.<br /><br />Internet 2.0 enabled anyone to build businesses online, which meant the entry barrier to being <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-15-youngest-billionaires-in-america-forbes-2021-10#1-sam-bankman-fried-crypto-entrepreneur-15">a successful entrepreneur</a> dropped drastically when it came to age and increased when it came to talent.<br /><br />I tend to attract a lot of entrepreneurs. They come into the market after five or 10 years of hard work. You can almost watch the pattern play out with how they want to live compared to people who've grown up with wealth.<br /><br />They are contemporary and mobile, have a different perspective on life, and an appetite for a different kind of real estate.<br /><br />The traditionalists will stay in the "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/london-eaton-square-where-russian-billionaires-live-red-square-2022-3">golden postcodes</a>." Contemporary money is indifferent; they don't necessarily want that period house in Belgravia or Mayfair. They're happy to have more properties but smaller ones worldwide.<br /><br />There's also a massive thunderstorm of change in our industry regarding how people are made aware of real estate.<br /><br />We've sold properties over social media for over a decade, and now all the top agents around the world know one another and can refer business across this network.<br /><br />I sold a $51 million property through my close friend's network on Instagram. I was one of the first people ever to sell a property over <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-twitter-could-be-western-wechat-china-superapp-2022-6">WeChat</a>, a Chinese app I used to communicate with the buyers, a 25-year-old billionaire who didn't speak very good English.<br /><br /><h2>I call myself 'Mr. Super Prime.' Building a brand in this industry is essential.</h2>It's essential to build your <keyword id="20587722" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-brand" source="keywords">personal brand</keyword> if you want to be successful in this industry.<br /><br />When I worked in the firm, I started traveling to the US and saw how entrepreneurial they are. Every day is their best opportunity.<br /><br />I realized that being that person, sharing information and access was valuable. So, I started curating content, documenting my days, and building my brand online. I called myself "Mr. Super Prime," and the nickname stuck.<br /><br />My colleagues thought it was an ego play. I got a lot of pushback even though I was telling them all to do the same. But I was generating £400 million worth of leads a month.<br /><br />Now, I've scaled things up a level with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-buying-london-luxury-real-estate-market-super-prime-property-2024-5" target="_blank">my Netflix show,</a> "Buying London."<br /><br />This city is a hidden gem, and my agency, DDRE Global, has access to some of the most desirable homes here.<br /><br />People are interested in very expensive and special properties. Without it, you can become lazy and weak. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Netflix's "Buying London" is a reality show about London's luxury real estate market and the agents behind it.</li><li>The show is centered on the super-prime property agency DDRE Global.</li></ul><p>A new reality show, "Buying London," dropped on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-wins-streaming-wars-this-chart-shows-why-2024-1">Netflix</a> on Wednesday, and it's all about London's luxury real estate market.</p><p>The show is centered on Daniel Daggers and his team of real estate agents at the property company DDRE Global. Daggers says he's sold over £5 billion ($6.4 billion) of real estate over the course of his 25 years in the industry. This includes a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tycoon-ken-griffin-s-500m-property-spree-in-london-and-the-us-fgvgpx6fw">£95 million ($120 million) mansion</a> to hedge fund tycoon Ken Griffin in a previous role, per The Times of London. </p><p>He calls himself "Mr. Super Prime," referring to the multimillion-dollar properties sold to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-living-cities-world-eiu-report-singapore-zurich-switzerland-2023-12">ultra-high-net-worth individuals</a>. And London has no shortage of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-living-space-million-buys-apartment-rich-monaco-singapore-2024-2">expensive properties</a> or wealthy buyers.</p><div type="image" title="Daniel Daggers, star of Buying London on Netflix" height="1080" width="1920" msid="110336440" hostid="261" sizebytes="326776"></div><p>The new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-netflix-is-changing-the-entertainment-industry-2021-8">Netflix</a> series takes viewers around London's super-prime housing market, showcasing properties in some of the city's most expensive areas, including Mayfair and Holland Park.</p><p>Most of DDRE's current London listings cost over £10 million ($13 million), with some stretching over £20 million ($25 million), according to its website.</p><p>But it is a reality show — so much of the drama comes from the interpersonal relationships and rivalries between the other agents, who are competing for big commissions. Some agents are familiar with the industry, including DDRE's top agent, Lauren Christy, while others are new to the industry, such as 21-year-old Reme Nicole.</p><p>The reviews so far have been harsh. "I hate almost everything about 'Buying London,'" Rebecca Nicholson wrote in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/article/2024/may/22/buying-london-review-probably-the-most-hateable-tv-show-ever-made">The Guardian</a>, "I hate its reverence for billionaires and bad taste." 'It's tired, tone-deaf, and shamefully crass."</p><p>"I'm delighted to say it's every bit as ghastly as you would hope," wrote Carol Midgley in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/buying-london-netflix-television-review-l0d3gzx5l">The Times</a>. 'I'm delighted to say it's every bit as ghastly as you would hope."</p><div type="image" title="Buying London" height="1080" width="1920" msid="110336442" hostid="261" sizebytes="111660"></div><h2 id="f7e0ffb5-4d8e-44d4-b27d-ba963e749ec4">The London version of 'Selling Sunset'</h2><p>Netflix has had success with reality real-estate crossover shows in the past. "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/selling-sunset-fun-facts-things-to-know">Selling Sunset"</a> proved to be a big hit with viewers after it debuted in 2019, and has since run for seven seasons. </p><p>It gave viewers a look at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/selling-sunset-los-angeles-mansion-tax-millionaires-housing-crisis-2023-11">Los Angeles' high-end real estate market</a> — and the agents handling the multimillion-dollar deals. </p><p>And it's also been a success for the real estate agents involved. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/selling-sunset-mary-fitzgerald-reality-tv-affected-real-estate-business-2022-10">Mary Fitzgerald, a real-estate agent on "Selling Sunset</a>," previously told BI that she has got more clients since appearing on the show and now sells at higher prices than before. It has meant she now won't sell any house under $2 million, unless as a favor for a friend.</p>

London's answer to 'Selling Sunset' has just dropped on Netflix — and it's already getting dragged

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="11897354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="justice-department" source="Orion">Justice Department</keyword> announced it's creating a unit to fight <keyword id="12069542" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="domestic-terrorism" source="Orion">domestic terrorism</keyword>.</li><li>Domestic <keyword id="11895207" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="terrorism" source="Orion">terrorism</keyword> experts say the success of the unit will depend on funding and resources.</li></ul><p>The Justice Department is establishing its own domestic terrorism unit to thwart the rise of home-grown extremism. But national security experts and advocates say it's still unclear whether this unit will make Americans safer.  </p><p>"The fact that they're doing something is really welcomed, but we need more, and we need more transparency," said Ryan Greer, a national security director at Anti-Defamation League. "What you're seeing right now is the <keyword id="60973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biden" source="Orion">Biden</keyword> administration succeed in the basic tenets of governance, but fail in terms of fully meeting the moment that we need right now." </p><p>Greer, who served as a senior advisor for Community Partnerships and Terrorism Prevention at the Homeland Security Department, said President Joe Biden should have pushed <keyword id="11893699" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> to pass legislation that would have codified the new unit. If Congress were to pass such a bill, it would be harder for another presidential administration to dismantle it, Greer said. </p><p>Several domestic terrorism experts Insider spoke to said many factors will determine the unit's ability to combat terrorists who originate from within the nation's borders, as opposed to fighting would-be terrorists from foreign lands — the nation's primary anti-terrorism focus during the two decades since the attacks of <keyword id="12004646" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="september-11" source="Orion">September 11</keyword>, 2001. </p><p>For one, funding is crucial to the unit's success, said Daniel Byman, a senior fellow at the Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings Institution.</p><p>"If they don't get enough funding … this unit would be ineffective," he told Insider. "They would have a small number of people who would not be able to manage a problem that seems fairly widespread and fairly entrenched. They would not be able to respond to new situations."</p><p>Michael German, who served as an FBI special agent specializing in domestic terrorism, worries that the unit will not be transparent about its efforts or findings because it will be under the traditionally secretive National Security Division within the Justice Department. This lack of transparency could be an issue because then Congress and the public will not have a full understanding of how big this issue is.</p><p>"Domestic terrorism is not a new problem. The Justice Department and prosecutors have been prosecuting these cases for decades," he said. "Congress is still trying to get from the FBI and the Justice Department data about domestic terrorism." </p><p>Domestic terrorism attacks have indeed <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/restricted/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fin-depth%2Fnews%2F2021%2F12%2F30%2Ffederal-government-underestimated-domestic-extremism%2F6449221001%2F">spanned</a> decades. One of the deadliest — the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing that killed 168 people — took place in relatively recent memory. Last year, the nation marked 100 years since the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/05/24/us/tulsa-race-massacre.html">Tulsa Race Massacre</a> killed hundreds of Black residents in Oklahoma and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses.</p><div type="image" title="In this Nov. 28, 2018, file photo, the Department of Justice seal is seen in Washington, D.C." height="1252" width="1669" msid="88865131" hostid="261"></div><p>The Justice Department confirmed to Insider that the unit will serve within the National Security Division's Counterterrorism Section. But it did not provide information about funding for the unit or any other details about the specific nature of the unit's work.</p><p>Matthew Olsen, assistant attorney general for national security, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/speech/assistant-attorney-general-matthew-g-olsen-delivers-opening-remarks-us-senate-committee">said</a> during a Senate hearing Tuesday that the unit will be composed of dedicated attorneys who will help "ensure that these cases are properly handled and effectively coordinated across the DOJ and around the country."</p><p>"We have seen a growing threat from those who are motivated by racial animus, as well as those who ascribe to extremist anti-government and anti-authority ideologies," Olsen said before the Senate Judiciary Committee.</p><p>The White House did not respond to comment on whether Biden will push for a legislative component that codifies such a unit.</p><p>Domestic terrorism has become a top priority for the Biden administration after extremists attacked the US Capitol on <keyword id="11897870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="january-6" source="Orion">January 6</keyword>, 2021. In June, the Biden administration <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/06/15/fact-sheet-national-strategy-for-countering-domestic-terrorism/">issued</a> a national strategy for countering domestic terrorism that outlined several steps his administration would take to address this issue.</p><p>Earlier this month, on the one-year anniversary of the US Capitol attack, Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-january-6-anniversary-capitol-speech-2022-1">vowed</a> to continue combatting domestic terrorism.</p><p>"I did not seek this fight brought to this Capitol one year ago today, but I will not shrink from it either," he said. "I will stand in this breach. I will defend this nation. And I will allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of our democracy."</p>

<p><div type="image" title="marvel mcu needs gay superhero 2x1" height="1200" width="2400" msid="76840407" hostid="261"></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1939004" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kevin-Feige">Kevin Feige</keyword> has said that Valkyrie will be bisexual in "<keyword id="633862" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Thor">Thor</keyword>: Love and Thunder," while Brian Tyree Henry's Phastos is reported to have a husband in "The Eternals."</li><li>However, as a gay man, I am worried that <keyword id="6371693" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBT">LGBT</keyword> characters are again being relegated to supporting roles, when they should finally be given their own movie.</li><li>Insider spoke to queer directors, including Wash Westmoreland and Craig Johnson, about the need for LGBT representation in superhero movies.</li><li>A leading, LGBT superhero would send the message that queer people can be heroes, too, and would do for queer children what "Black Panther" did for children of color around the world.</li><li>Westmoreland said: "Who are our gods? Who are the people we worship? Are they all white, straight men? No."</li></ul><p><keyword id="47501" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marvel">Marvel</keyword> showed commitment to giving full onscreen representation to an often underrepresented group with "Black Panther." Ryan Coogler's movie was the first time many children of color around the world saw themselves in the main characters on the big screen.</p><p>"Black Panther" was a celebration of Black culture in one of the biggest, most talked-about movies of the year. And, while <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/2/23/17028826/black-panther-wakanda-culture-marvel">others can describe</a> how groundbreaking and revolutionary "Black Panther" was far better than I can, it's not hard to see the positive impact the movie had in terms of representation.</p><p>It's time that Feige and the <keyword id="412910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="MCU">MCU</keyword> embraced the <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> community in the same way.</p><h2>The story so far</h2><p>So far, the MCU has had one openly LGBT character in the entirety of its 23 films. That was "Avengers: Endgame" director <a href="https://deadline.com/2019/04/avengers-endgame-marvel-first-openly-gay-character-directors-joe-russo-anthony-russo-discuss-1202601583/">Joe Russo himself making a cameo</a> in "Endgame." Russo played a man in Steve Rodgers' support group post-snap who casually mentioned that he went on a date with a guy.</p><p>To be clear, my face lit up in the cinema when watching this, and it was exactly the sort of representation that we sometimes need — a character who just so happens to be gay, but it isn't made into a big deal. The fact that I was so happy about this five-minute scene, however, proves how starved the LGBT community has been for representation in mainstream movies.</p><p>The character wasn't even named. In 23 movies, that was all we got.</p><p>The future does, however, look a little more rainbow-coloured.</p><p><div type="image" title="Tessa Thompson Valkyrie and Brian Tyree Henry" height="1200" width="1600" msid="76840411" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In July 2019, Kevin Feige announced that Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie is bisexual, with a promised story about said sexuality to come in Taika Waititi's upcoming fourth "Thor" movie, "Love &amp; Thunder."</p><p>Meanwhile, the <keyword id="2430108" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marvel-Cinematic-Universe">Marvel Cinematic Universe</keyword>'s upcoming movie "The Eternals" is reported to include the MCU's first openly gay characters and couple — Brian Tyree Henry's Phastos and Haaz Sleimen's character, who is unnamed as of yet, will play husbands.</p><p>These are positive steps for the MCU, and bold ones. An interracial gay couple and a Black, bisexual woman are characters I'm excited to see on screens.</p><p>However, it may not be enough.</p><p>As a gay man, I am worried that once again, the LGBT characters are going to be sidekicks to the straight leading characters, a pattern that has been repeated throughout the history of mainstream cinema.</p><h2>Having queer representation in Marvel movies 'would be massive'</h2><p>What this sidelining of queer characters does is essentially send the message to young LGBT kids that they aren't worthy of leading status, and straight people come first.</p><p><div type="image" title="Black Panther hed" height="1200" width="1600" msid="76840413" hostid="261"></div></p><p>What we need is a superhero film where the leading character is a queer one. This would let queer people know that they are important, and, as "Alex Strangelove" director Craig Johnson told Insider, "would be massive."</p><p>"What something like that does is it just normalizes the queer identity," Johnson said. </p><p>"It makes it part of the fabric of our world, and certainly the Marvel movies are our current myth-making movies. Superhero movies are now our legends and our myths in our contemporary culture. Having that kind of queer representation within that, where everyone goes to see them and talks about them, especially young people, would be massive."</p><p>It wouldn't just help queer kids, either. It would also help non-queer children view LGBT people in a much more positive and empowering light. </p><p>Fellow queer director Wash Westmoreland, who helmed "Colette" and directed Julianne Moore to a best actress Oscar win for "Still Alice," agrees that "superheroes have devolved into polytheism, like ancient Rome or ancient Greece."</p><p>"There's a continuation of that into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, clearly, these barriers exist to representation. Who are our gods? Who are the people we worship? Are they all white, straight men? No."</p><p>"'Black Panther' showed that there are African-American and African superheroes. 'Wonder Woman' shows that there are female superheroes. These barriers have been broken one by one, but the queer barrier seems to be one of the last, because superhero comic culture has grown out of quite a masculine cultural place that has resisted queerness. But now it's time, and I look forward to seeing what powers the queer superhero has."</p><p><div type="image" title="Le Fou Beauty and the Beast" height="1200" width="1600" msid="76840416" hostid="261"></div></p><p>While "Black Panther" was able to deal, as director Ryan Coogler told <a href="https://time.com/black-panther/">Time</a>, "with issues of being of African descent" head-on, there seems to be a reluctance to embrace queer issues in the same way.</p><p>Instead, LGBT representation in a lot of Disney films, which the MCU is part of, is dealt with in a cloak and dagger manner. They may pop up every now and again, but it won't really be addressed — like Le Fou in "Beauty and the Beast" and his easily-removed-for-other-countries dancing scene.</p><p>Fantasy author Alex London spoke to me about JK Rowling's "Harry Potter" series for a previous story, and his sentiment applies to the MCU, too: "Queer kids see that they don't get to be part of the story, that they aren't worthy of heroism. And then their straight peers also see that, and it sends a message to them that says: 'Something is wrong with these people.'</p><p>"Everyone deserves to be seen as heroic and magical and worthy."</p><p>I hope that Valkyrie and Phastos are given storylines that embrace and confront queer issues and queerness directly, but even if they are, a leading gay superhero is still needed to tell LGBT kids across the world that they can be superheroes, too. </p><p>The reaction to Feige saying that Valkyrie is bisexual is the perfect example of why better and greater LGBT representation is needed in mainstream works. Some suggested the move was Disney trying to push an "agenda" while another <a href="https://twitter.com/Albertomalerto1/status/1152867504735313925?s=20">asked</a>: "Can we stop pushing/forcing lgbt into movies?"</p><p>The idea that a move for representation was seen as "forcing" queer people into movies suggests there's still an issue with how queer people are viewed in society. In reality, some screen time is finally being given to a group of people who have been short-changed by the film industry for years.</p><p>No one would ever suggest studios should "stop forcing heterosexuality into movies," because straight is the default.</p><h2>The mainstream, LGBT movie 'Love, Simon' was revolutionary</h2><p>The first time I saw myself properly reflected on screen was in 2018's "Love, Simon."</p><p>I was 23 years old. The experience of actually seeing a character I could fully relate to, a character who was going through the same problems and situations and interactions that I'd been through, was overwhelming.</p><p><div type="image" title="Love, Simon" height="1200" width="1600" msid="76840420" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I sobbed five times in the theater, and from the sounds of other sniffles, I knew I wasn't the only gay person doing so. It felt so good to finally be understood and acknowledged by mainstream cinema. I often think about what I would have done to have had that film when I was a 10-year-old kid struggling with my sexuality, entrenched in fear, doubt, and anxiety.</p><p>It's not an overstatement to say that one film could have saved me from years of repression and internalized homophobia. I probably would have come out, and been happy within myself, far sooner.</p><p>Instead, I grew up feeling alone — with society and mainstream media very much reaffirming my fears that to be queer was to be the opposite of normal.</p><p>I'm sure "Love, Simon" had the same impact on many kids around the world, but a superhero movie could do the same thing on a much larger scale.</p><h2>Superheroes are pretty gay anyway</h2><p>Queer director Daniel Ribeiro, who directed "The Way He Looks," told Insider: "I've always thought 'X-Men' was just a big queer movie, so I think everyone who is LGBT knows what they are talking about in a way. Being an X-Men is being queer. 'X-Men' does a great job as a metaphor of people being treated differently for being different."</p><p>Indeed, "X2" even has a mock coming-out scene when Ice Man (who is gay in the comics) comes out as a mutant to his parents — who even ask him "have you tried not being a mutant?"</p><p>Even as a kid, I was aware that it was clever and funny, although, again, the lack of queer superheroes sent the message that LGBT characters did not belong in those positive positions as superheroes. They would riff off of queer culture, and the unfortunate things that queer people are forced to go through, like coming out, but would refuse to actually put them on screen.</p><p>As Craig Johnson pointed out to me, though, superhero movies already have a lot of queer sensibilities anyway.</p><p>"My personal favourite superhero movie is 'Batman Returns,' with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman. I think that is a perfect superhero movie. The dialogue sounds like it was written by drag queens. Talk about queer sensibilities," Johnson said.</p><p>"That one actually has them. And yeah, the action is great, it's never a joke, the whole thing is taken seriously, it's beautifully designed. It's so stylish."</p><p>Superheroes and comics are always chopped and changed and given new versions of themselves. Peter Parker started off as Spider-Man, but we eventually got a Black Spider-Man in Miles Morales. The same thing happened with Captain America, who started out as Steve Rodgers and then became Sam Wilson (as seen in "Endgame.")</p><p>Carol Danvers was the first Ms Marvel, who was followed by Kamala Khan — who became Marvel's first Muslim character to headline their own comic book (and will appear in a Disney+ series).</p><p>There are countless examples of this happening in Marvel comics so a new, queer version of an existing comic character would not be "unfaithful" as some die-hard comic book fans suggest, but rather another update or a new version of an existing character, something Marvel has done for decades.</p><p>Furthermore, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, two major Marvel teams, rumoured to be joining the MCU, now is the perfect time to line up one of these leading characters as queer. They could be introduced in their own standalone film, à la Iron Man or Thor or Captain America, and then join their wider teams in the bigger movies, like the "Avengers."</p><p>Ice Man, an X-Man, is actually gay in the comics, while fellow X-Man Northstar married his partner Jinadu in the comic's first-ever gay wedding. A gay superhero would finally give LGBTQ kids the representation they need — so why are we still waiting?

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Daniel Smith/Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">'The Man From U.N.C.L.E."</p></div><p></p></div></div>With over 100 credits on movies and TV, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1207404/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Daniel Pemberton</a>, 35, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.</p><p>And 2015 looks to be a banner year for the Englishman as he takes on two high-profile projects, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (currently in theaters) and "Steve Jobs" (out October 9).</p><p>"Kiss goodbye to your life," Pemberton told Business Insider this week while taking a break from putting the final touches on the "Steve Jobs" score at the legendary Abbey Road recording studio in London.</p><p>The work has been constant for over a year for Pemberton, but he's not complaining. Working alongside some of the biggest names in the business has allowed Pemberton to create music he believes is different than what we're hearing often in today's movies.</p><p>That's what got him the gig on "U.N.C.L.E.," a reboot of the 1964 spy comedy starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander.</p><p>Director <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005363/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Guy Richie</a> was weaving through the usual composers the film's studio Warner Bros. had compiled for him when he came across Pemberton's show reel.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Chloe Pemberton</span></p><p class="caption">Daniel Pemberton.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"He said it was the first one that didn't sound exactly like everyone else's," said Pemberton, whose recent credits range from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000631/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">Ridley Scott</a>'s "The Counselor" to the PBS "Nova" series.</p><p>Richie offered Pemberton the job on the spot and worked on the music for "U.N.C.L.E." for the next 11 months.</p><p>"Guy's feeling is if you've seen it or heard it before why do it again," said Pemberton, who was intimidated at first to work with Richie as his films always have such a unique sounds.</p><p>"His last movies were the 'Sherlock Holmes' films which had fantastic scores by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001877/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Hans Zimmer</a>!" said Pemberton, referring to the legendary composer.</p><p>But Pemberton believes what settled him was the way Richie wanted the music made. Instead of the typical plan of having a composer come in toward the end of post production and spend a few months with an orchestra creating the sound, Richie had Pemberton involved once editing began.</p><p>"I think one of the most important things when you write a film score is having room to fail," Pemberton said. "If you have room to fail you can try great, crazy ideas, that's really exciting."</p><p>With time to develop the score, Pemberton brought in individual musicians to try out different ideas.</p><p>The breakthrough came when he brought in a bass flute.</p><p>"We tried a lot of different ideas over the big car chase that opens the movie and Guy felt [the sound] was too predictable," Pemberton recalled.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Warner Bros.</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"And then suddenly I did some work with this amazing flute player Dave Heath who normally plays classical concertos. I was like, 'Show me the crazy noises you can make that no one lets you do.' Soon after he was done with "U.N.C.L.E." director <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000965/">Danny Boyle</a> came calling asking him to come on his "Steve Jobs" project.</p><p>On the film for the last 9 months, Pemberton says it's very different from creating the score for "U.N.C.L.E."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Universal</span></p><p class="caption">"Steve Jobs."</p></div><p></p></div></div>"What we're trying to do with 'Steve Jobs' is going to be a surprise in some ways," he said.
