Daman and Diu is a union territory of the country located in the Western India. Spanning over an area of just 112 km2, this is the smallest federal division in the democracy. Lok Sabha Elections 2019 candidate list for Daman & Diu

New Delhi, Jan 23 () The new union territory of Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu has been assigned new vehicle registration mark 'DD', the government said on Thursday.
 The Centre on Wednesday had designated Daman as the headquarters of the merged union territories of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
 "The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has assigned a new motor vehicle Registration Mark 'DD' to 'Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu' for registration of vehicles," MoRTH said in a statement.
 The ministry has issued a notification to this effect, under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

Earlier in 1999 and 2004 elections, the INC candidate Dhayabhai Patel won from here and held the seat for two consecutive terms. The voting percentage in 2014 general Lok Sabha elections in the union territory was 78.01. Daman and Diu union territory has one single Lok Sabha constituency which is unreserved. There are no assembly constituencies here as the governance is directly controlled by the union government of India at the center. The electors of the union territory voted in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 23 during the third phase of elections in the country.

State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (<keyword id="6354737" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ongc" source="Orion">ONGC</keyword>) has cancelled the bids received for its <keyword id="6392149" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="daman" source="Orion">Daman</keyword> upside gas development project off the western coast due to high price quotes, sources said. The project is crucial to ONGC's strategy of ramping up gas production from its shallow-water fields off India's west coast. Once completed, the project would lead to nearly doubling of current gas production of 4-5 million standard cubic metres per day. Sources aware of the matter said the bids ONGC received for the project were way higher than the company's internal estimates and so the tender has been cancelled. The tender would now be divided into separate packages and rebid. Engineering and fabrication contractor <keyword id="45475" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="larsen-toubro" source="Orion">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> (L&amp;T) emerged as the lowest bidder when the bids were opened in December last year. It quoted a cost of USD 663.77 million to build the infrastructure needed to ramp up production from the field that lies about 60 kilometers off the west coast. A consortium of Afcons and Indonesia's Gunanusa Utama Fabricators emerged a distant second in the bidding, quoting close to USD 801.90 million. Vietnam's PTSC and Abu Dhabi's National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) were also among those initially chasing the contract, but did not participate in the bid process. Sources said L&amp;T's quote of USD 663.37 million was 36.77 per cent higher than ONGC's revised internal estimate of USD 485.03 million. L&amp;T offered a USD 1 million discount but this was not acceptable to ONGC, they said, adding that ONGC could have tolerated a maximum variation of 20 per cent over the internal price estimate. Daman upside gas development project envisaged building four new wellhead platforms, seven infield pipelines, a new process gas compressor module and the addition of low-pressure compression at the existing process platform. It also includes topsides modifications at existing wellhead platforms. The project has been in the works for years but has been delayed on several occasions due to unfavourable gas pricing. But a rise in domestic gas prices turned around the project's commercial viability. ONGC has been producing natural gas from Daman since 2016 and has spent an estimated USD 1 billion on offshore infrastructure at the field over the past five to six years. The project to raise production involved building infrastructure that could also handle gas from neighbouring B-12 and C-24 marginal fields. India's domestic crude oil and natural gas production has been dwindling in recent years and ONGC is under increasing pressure from the government to boost its output and reverse the declining trend. Projects like Daman are crucial for meeting those objectives but the scrapping of the tender would add to the delay in boosting output. ONGC scraps bids for flagship Daman gas field development over cost concerns

Actor <keyword id="6384030" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="raveena-tandon" source="Orion">Raveena Tandon</keyword> says she is elated that through <keyword id="25105" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="padma-shri" source="Orion">Padma Shri</keyword>, the fourth highest civilian award in the country, her work in both mainstream and independent cinema has been recognized. The actor, whose name was announced among the Padma awardees on the eve of the Republic Day, said 2023 has begun on a good note. "It has been a year of awards for 'KGF 2' and 'Aranyak'. But this (Padma Shri) was the best of all because this encapsulated my entire body of work. It encapsulates everything, the commercial successes, the songs that are so eternal that people remember," <keyword id="6544" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="raveena" source="Orion">Raveena</keyword> told PTI. The actor, who ruled the 90s cinema with hits such as "Mohra", "Dilwale" and "Dulhe Raja" while also making a mark in off-beat movies such as "Daman", "Satta" and "Shool", made her successful streaming debut with Netflix series "Aranyak" in 2021. She also played an important role in "KGF: Chapter 2". "It feels good that there are people watching and appreciating you. It was a conscious decision to stop signing glamorous roles." Workwise, 2023 has many interesting projects in the pipeline for the actor. She will be seen in Arbaaz Khan-backed social drama "Patna Shukla", a romantic-comedy "Gudchadhi" with Sanjay Dutt and a show with Disney+ Hotstar. "'Gudchadhi' is a sweet romantic-comedy, 'Patna Shuka', which is topical and relevant to the problems that we face in our society. Then I have a show that I am doing for Hotstar, which is a thriller, on 'Aranyak', I think the writing work is going on and soon we will be looking forward to KGF 3," Raveena said. New Delhi, Nov 28 () Umbrella body of mining dependents GMPF on Thursday made a plea to the government to work towards the amendment to MMDR Act or Goa Daman and Diu Mining Concession Abolition Act, 1987, which would lead to early resumption of mining in Goa that came to a standstill in March last year.
 "We... request the state government and central government to work towards the required amendment to Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) [MMDR] Act or Goa Daman and Diu Mining Concession Abolition Act, 1987," Goa Mining People's Front (GMPF) President Puti Gaonkar said.
 GMPF represent lakhs of people employed in the mining industry in the in the state of Goa.
 Mining came to a grinding halt in Goa last year after the Supreme Court quashed 88 leases and banned extraction of fresh iron ore.
 GMPF also urged the centre to convene the meeting of Group of Ministers (GoM) at the earliest.
 The GoM headed by Home Minister Amit Shah has been formed to examine the vexed issue of mining in Goa. The group includes union ministers for finance, environment, agriculture, mining, commerce and industries, petroleum and law.
 Mining is one of the two major sources of livelihood in Goa and the complete shutdown of mining industry has hit the the livelihoods of more than three lakh people in the state, GMPF said.
 The shutdown has caused an estimated loss of more than Rs 5,000 crore per year to the state of Goa, thereby adversely impacting the state's finances, it said.
 People who were deriving their livelihood from the mining sector are indebted with loans which is causing an alarming situation wherein people are defaulting on payments towards the said loans and as such are on the verge of losing their houses and possessions, it added. SID SID ANS
