<p>Business Insider was on the scene to see what the coders were up to.</p>
<p>App.net isn't actually trying to kill off Twitter or Facebook, as some early coverage suggested. But it is trying to provide an alternative that lives alongside the social giants.</p>
<p><keyword id="1753229" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dalton-Caldwell">Dalton Caldwell</keyword>, the CEO of <keyword id="1753228" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mixed-Media-Labs">Mixed Media Labs</keyword>, the company behind App.net, wanted to give developers like himself a place to experiment, play, and build that wasn't subject to bigger companies' sometimes capricious-seeming rules—backed by the users directly. App.net developers pay $100 a year, while users pay either $5 a month or $36 a year.</p>
<p>Last month, App.net unveiled a free, more limited version of the service, considerably expanding its reach; the hope is that paying customers will subsidize the free ones, while the free users make App.net more valuable.</p>
<p>The hackathon, App.net's second one ever, wasn't a huge startup jamboree, but the one-day event, held at the WeWork building on the border of San Francisco's SoMa and Financial District neighborhoods, drew a passionate crowd of coders, designers, and tinkerers. One developer, <a href="http://alpha.app.net/duerig/">Jonathon Duerig</a>, drove in from Salt Lake City.</p>
<p>Besides Caldwell himself, there were a few tech celebrities who showed up. One was Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz. (While Andreessen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marc-andreessen-steps-down-from-dalton-caldwells-board-2012-8">stepped down from Mixed Media Lab's board last year</a>, Caldwell invited him to see if some of the independent developers had ideas he might want to back.) Another was Steve Streza, the lead developer of Pocket, an app for saving online articles for reading later.</p>
<p>The results are encouraging. As Streza <a href="https://alpha.app.net/stevestreza/post/4217557">subsequently noted</a>, many of the new tools coming out of App.net look nothing like the ones we've seen built on top of Twitter's platform. The next target for the community: Providing a <a href="http://blog.app.net/2013/03/15/how-app-net-could-be-helpful-to-next-generation-rss-readers/">substitute for Google Reader</a>, the news-reading tool that Google recently announced it planned to close in July.</p>
<p>That incident highlighted the need for something like App.net—a user-supported platform that won't fold up shop if it's not fitting into some big corporation's goals.</p>

Insider Today: Apple gets crushed

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Disney is closing its iconic ride Splash Mountain on Monday, January 23.</li><li>The movie behind the ride, "Song of the South," was criticized for its depiction of Black Americans in a post-slavery era.</li></ul><p>When Disneyland unveiled Splash Mountain in 1989, it sparked renewed controversy over "Song of the South," the movie that had inspired the ride.</p><p>The 1946 live-action film follows the story of a 7-year-old boy named Johnny, who visits his grandmother's plantation in Georgia after the abolition of slavery. Bobby befriends an ex-slave living on the plantation named Uncle Remus, played by James Baskett, who spins moralistic tales about the adventures of Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear.</p><p>"Song of the South" garnered some accolades after its premiere, winning an Oscar for the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and an honorary award for Baskett's performance. (Baskett was <a href="https://newspapers.library.in.gov/?a=d&amp;d=JPOST19470103-01.1.7&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not allowed</a> to attend the film's premiere in Atlanta, which was then a segregated city.)</p><p>But the movie also received heated backlash for its romantic portrayal of the Old South — and of the racial hierarchy that existed in pre-abolition America. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., a congressman from Harlem, <a href="https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/how-disney-tried-and-failed-to-remove-song-of-the-south-from-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decried</a> the film as an "insult to American minorities [and] everything that America as a whole stands for," while a journalist at The Afro-American slammed the movie as "a piece of propaganda for white supremacy as Hollywood ever produced."</p><p>Disney World's Splash Mountain ride, which focuses solely on the adventures of Br'er Rabbit, was an "attempt to sanitize Disney history" by omitting any mentions of the controversial aspects of the film, like Uncle Remus and little Johnny, according to Jason Sperb, a film professor at Oklahoma State University and author of "Disney's Most Notorious Film: Race, Convergence, and the Hidden Histories of Song of the South."</p><div type="image" title="Splash Mountain ride" height="2666" width="3555" msid="97227363" hostid="261" sizebytes="621682"></div><h2><strong>Disney tried to mitigate the racism in 'Song of the South'</strong></h2><p>Disney announced it would <a href="https://www.insider.com/disneys-splash-mountain-to-close-in-january-to-become-new-ride-2022-12">close Splash Mountain and "reimagine" it in the theme of "The Princess and the Frog,"</a> which features Disney's first Black princess, amid the George Floyd protests in the summer of 2020.</p><p>"I've felt, as long as I've been CEO, that 'Song of the South' was — even with a disclaimer — just not appropriate in today's world," Disney CEO Bob Iger said at a shareholder meeting in 2020. Iger confirmed that the controversial movie would <a href="https://deadline.com/2020/03/bob-iger-song-of-the-south-disney-disclaimer-1202879464/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not be included</a> in the Disney+ streaming service.</p><p>Even during the film's production in the 1940s, Disney knew it was navigating dangerous terrain and took steps to mitigate racist representations of plantation life. "Dumbo," which was released just a few years earlier in 1941, had been <a href="https://www.insider.com/moments-themes-in-disney-movies-that-havent-aged-well-problematic">criticized for its depiction of wisecracking black crows, one of whom was named Jim Crow.</a></p><p>"The negro situation is a dangerous one," Disney publicist Vern Caldwell reportedly <a href="https://jezebel.com/disney-to-de-racist-splash-mountain-1844166139" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> to a producer. "Between the negro haters and the negro lovers there are many chances to run afoul of situations that could run the gamut all the way from the nasty to the controversial."</p><p>In screenwriter Dalton Reymond's original outline for "Song of the South," white characters called Uncle Remus an "old darkie," and Black characters referred to white family members as "massa." Recognizing the potential pitfalls of racial stereotypes, Disney hired additional consultants and writers to work with the Southern-born Reymond.</p><p>Reymond eventually removed a character named "Br'er Coon," but ignored many other suggestions to portray Black characters in a more dignified manner. In the final movie, one of the African American folktales Uncle Remus tells Johnny is "Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby," which refers to a golem made of black tar used to trap Br'er Rabbit.</p><p>Uncle Remus himself is a "one-dimensional character who has no purpose or identity beyond serving a white family," according to Sperb.</p><p>"The result of this is what some scholars call 'affectionate racism.' It's not an overtly derogatory depiction of a character, but there's something condescending about it that can in some ways be just as problematic," Sperb told Insider.</p><div type="image" title="Still of Uncle Remus and Johnny from Song of the South by Disney" height="1748" width="2331" msid="97227365" hostid="261" sizebytes="255812"></div><h2><strong>Reckoning with 'Song of the South'</strong></h2><p>"Song of the South" re-emerged in the 70s and 80s with the rise of the new right, spearheaded by figures like Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon.</p><p>"The rise of Nixon and Reagan during this time is very much a reaction against the Civil Rights Movement," Sperb said. "So there's this kind of nostalgia — more so than in the 40s — for an imagined earlier moment where there was a different racial hierarchy in this country."</p><p>Disney also became a bigger institution in the 70s, branding itself as a family-friendly television and theme park empire. The rebranding brought about a renewed fascination with "Song of the South" and its association with Disney, which installed the Splash Mountain ride in 1989.</p><p>The largely unknown roots of popular and lasting Disney songs like "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and rides like Splash Mountain illustrate how "Song of the South" became one of "Hollywood's most resiliently offensive racist texts," according to Sperb.</p><div type="image" title="Walt Disney with musician Johnny Mercer in front of story boards from Song of the South" height="3664" width="4885" msid="97227367" hostid="261" sizebytes="2712330"></div><p>Although Disney's reimagining of Splash Mountain is a step toward addressing its complicated history with racism, some argue that "Song of the South" should not be totally forgotten. In 2017, Whoopi Goldberg told Disney to stop hiding its history, saying she wanted to make the film available to the public.</p><p>"I'm trying to find a way to get people to start having conversations about bringing 'Song of the South' back, so we can talk about what it was and where it came from and why it came out," the actress <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/whoopi-goldberg-wants-disney-bring-back-song-south-start-conversation-controversial-1946-film-154030256.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Yahoo Movies. </p><p>Sperb also believes there's value in keeping people informed about the issues underlying the movie — and Disney's history.</p><p>"Another question is: What do we do with Disney's legacy of stereotyping and this racial history?" Sperb said. "I think, to some degree, it's good to move beyond that, but there's also a danger where if 'Song of the South' went underground again, a lot of the same issues are going to reappear."</p>

Explaining the controversy around Disney's Splash Mountain and the 'racist' movie that inspired the popular ride

<p>In the same way that developer Dalton Caldwell wants people to pay a one-time $50 fee for App.net, a spam-free and ad-free Twitter alternative, <keyword id="1774460" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeremy-Anticouni">Jeremy Anticouni</keyword> hopes to win over disillusioned Instagram users.</p>
<p>Some Instagram users <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-advertising-terms-of-service-2012-12">got upset last year</a> over confusing changes to its terms of service that suggested it would sell users' photos. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom apologized and said that the Facebook-owned photo service wouldn't do that.</p>
<p>Also, some people are just <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/college-humor-instagram-parody-2012-12">tired of Instagram</a>, period.</p>

Instagram Whiners: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

<p>Twitter is a big user of Linux. So the real-time information network has stepped up to become an official, paying sponsor of the organization that oversees Linux.</p>
<p>It's a Silver member, paying $15,000 a year to support the Foundation, which covers things like the salary of Linux inventor Linus Torvalds.</p>
<p>You don't need to be a sponsor to use Linux or to submit software additions to it-that's the beauty of open-source software, which many startups have come to depend on.</p>
<p>But becoming an official Linux sponsor gives a company a couple of benefits. Sponsors get a bigger say in the kinds of technologies that will be included in Linux and which other projects the Linux Foundation works on.</p>
<p>For Twitter, whose servers are supporting 140 million active users and 400 million tweets a day, there's a long list of things they'll want built into Linux. While Twitter can add those things to Linux itself, by joining the foundation it taps into a network of thousands of Linux developers willing to help.</p>
<p>Being a paying sponsor also has another, less tangible benefit. It gives a company some street cred with developers. Many open-source developers feel very strongly about corporations that use open-source projects being good citizens and contributing both code and money.</p>
<p>The move may please one set of developers. But for others, the concern isn't about Twitter's longstanding support of open source. It's how Twitter treats developers who use its platform to build apps. One such developer, Dalton Caldwell <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dalton-caldwell-app-net-twitter-facebook-alternative-2012-8">accused Twitter and Facebook</a> of hurting developers in their pursuit of ad revenue. He then went out and raised crowdsourcing money to launch a competitor.</p>
<p>The Linux Foundation is hosting its big LinuxCon event next week in San Diego. Twitter's open-source manager, Chris Aniszczyk, is scheduled to be a keynote speaker. So the timing more likely has to do with the event, and not the unrelated fuss over Twitter's platform policies.</p>

Twitter Puts Some Money Behind Linux, Boosting Its Developer Street Cred

<p>Last year Facebook did this with Snapchat, the photo-sharing app where the photos disappear after a few seconds.</p>
<p>After brief talks in the fall went nowehere, Facebook came out with an exact clone of Snapchat called Poke.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The latest example is from ace WSJ reporter Evelyn Rusli, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424127887324392804578363033497647670-lMyQjAxMTAzMDEwODExNDgyWj.html">in the middle a longer story about how Facebook isn't getting along with Facebook developers lately.</a></span></p>
<p>Rusli writes:</p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;">On Friday, Facebook blocked MessageMe Inc., a messaging service that had just launched days earlier, from accessing users' friends list. Arjun Sethi, a MessageMe co-founder, said Facebook cited a section of its policy that addressed restricting apps that copied a core Facebook product or service.</p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;">According to people familiar with the matter, the fledgling service had recently rebuffed takeover interest from the social networking company.</p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;">Facebook declined to comment.</p>
<p class="p1">Also last year, a startup entrepreneur named Dalton Caldwell said Facebook threatened to kill his startup after he refused to sell, too.</p>
<p class="p1">There's not anything wrong with Facebook's behavoir here. All's fair and all that. But, wowzers, do those folks play some hardball.</p>
