Here's what the research says.</p><h2><strong>You should not apply coconut oil on a sunburn </strong></h2><p>Experts agree that coconut oil is not a good treatment for a fresh sunburn, particularly if your skin is raw or blistered. </p><p>Coconut oil is a thick, fatty substance that's solid at room temperature – picture something like vaseline. And it's one of the last things you want on sunburned skin because it doesn't address the effect of a burn, says cosmetic dermatologist <a href="http://kennethmarkmd.com/">Kenneth Mark</a>, MD. </p><p>That's because applying any kind of oil over a fresh sunburn will <a href="https://www.shape.com/lifestyle/beauty-style/can-coconut-oil-treat-sunburn">trap heat </a>on the surface of your skin, worsening the burn. This can prolong <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/coconut-oil-for-sunburn-relief">inflammation</a> and keep your skin hot and red for longer, prolonging the healing process. </p><h2><strong>Don't use coconut oil as a moisturizer for after a sunburn</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.oritmarkowitzmd.com/aboutdrmarkowitz">Orit Markowitz</a>, MD, Director of Pigmented Lesions and Skin Cancer at Mount Sinai in New York says that it only functions as a "topical oil," adding that it is too thick to penetrate the skin and offer any significant hydration. It's mostly just providing some temporary moisturization, one that's not nearly as long-lasting as a thick moisturizing cream. In fact, Markowitz suggests using a product like CeraVe and reapplying multiple times per day to support the skin it its healing process. </p><p>"This would not be used for blistering sunburns nor deeper level sunburns." says Evans.</p><p>"Oil can also clog your pores and is not the best product to use on your face," says Glenn Kolansky, MD, a dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology Surgery and Laser Center in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.</p><h2><strong>When to use coconut oil  </strong></h2><p>However, you could test out coconut oil's moisturizing abilities after the worst of your sunburn has healed. It might not help as much as other remedies, like thick moisturizing creams or aloe vera gel which is anti-inflammatory</p><p>And you might want to try it out on a patch of skin first. If you don't experience any adverse reactions, you could apply it a few times a day, says Evans. </p><p>Look for a product with few, if any, other added ingredients, so that the product is as clean and pure as possible</p><p>Think about the importance of avoiding sunburn in the first place. Sunburn causes discoloration, wrinkling of the skin and ultimately skin cancer, says Markowitz. If you're not already incorporating a daily<a href="https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/sun-protection/sunscreen-patients/sunscreen-faqs"> application of sunscreen</a> in your routine, it's time to start.</p><p>And no, coconut oil is not a good sunscreen substitute. One <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22279374">2011 study</a> found that oils including coconut, peanut, and olive oil blocked 20% of UV light from the sun. But that's nothing compared to SPF 15, which filters out 93%, SPF 30, which filters 97%,  or SPF 50, which filters 98%. </p><p>"It is vital to always apply sunscreen a part of your morning routine after you moisturize and before you apply makeup," she says. This is due to an inflammatory response caused by bacteria that live in our mouth. </p><p>These bacteria live in a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6163956/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biofilm</a> - known as plaque - that sticks to the teeth, especially between teeth and below the gums. </p><p>It is crucial to brush and floss your teeth to remove this biofilm and reduce the inflammation of the gums. Even though you might think it's the flossing that's causing you to bleed, it's the opposite - and continuing to floss can help you stop this bleeding over time. </p><p>"It's not so much the flossing. The gums bleed in response to flossing because the bacteria are already there, and there's inflammation in the gums," says <a href="https://www.dentistry.ucla.edu/directory/profile/perry-r-klokkevold-dds-ms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Perry R. Klokkevold, DDS, </a>Program Director of the Periodontics Residency Program at UCLA.</p><p>Here are four reasons why you may be dealing with inflammation of the gums and experiencing bleeding when you floss - and how to stop your gums from bleeding. </p><h2>1. You haven't flossed in a while</h2><p>If you don't keep up with flossing every day, you will experience a build-up of bacteria because you are not effectively cleaning off the biofilm on your teeth, Klokkevold says. </p><p>The more bacteria that builds up, the more inflamed your gums will be, so it's important to keep flossing. </p><p><strong>Important:</strong> It's normal for gums to bleed when flossing, especially if you haven't flossed in a while or are just starting to floss. This bleeding should go away as you continue to floss. </p><h2>2. You may have a build-up of plaque</h2><p>If you don't have the best oral hygiene or if you haven't had a professional dental cleaning done in a while, you may have a build-up of <a href="https://www.perio.org/consumer/difference-between-plaque-and-calculus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dental calculus</a>, which is hardened biofilm, also called plaque or tartar. </p><p>Klokkevold says dental calculus is a "hotel for bacteria," because they have microscopic spaces that may attract bacteria. This can make it very hard or impossible to clean them away. Since calculus harbors more bacteria, it can lead to even more inflammation of the gums.</p><p>According to Klokkevold, you may be able to spot a build-up of calculus if it's attached to the tooth, yellow in color, hard,  and cannot be brushed or flossed off. But it's more likely that your dentist will be able to catch this - so make sure you're keeping up with your regular check-ups. </p><h2>3. Pregnancy</h2><p>Pregnancy results in many intense hormonal changes. These hormonal changes make the inflammatory response worse and can make bleeding gums more likely, Klokkevold says. </p><p><strong>What the research says:</strong> <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6777164/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A 2019 study</a> found that 28.68% of pregnant women surveyed had red, swollen gums.</p><p>Even if you haven't ever experienced it before pregnancy, pregnancy hormones can kick inflammation into overdrive and cause your gums to bleed. Make sure you're keeping up with your regular dental check-ups and practicing healthy dental hygiene throughout your pregnancy. </p><h2>4. Gingivitis</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gingivitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354453" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gingivitis</a> is a mild form of gum disease. It results in inflammation of the gingiva, which refers to the gums that surround the teeth. </p><p>It can progress to <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/periodontitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354473" target="_blank" rel="noopener">periodontitis</a>, which is more serious, causing inflammation of the periodontium, which goes even deeper, to the roots of the teeth. If the recession isn't stopped, your teeth become more susceptible to decay and you could eventually lose them. </p><p>If your gum is receding one or more of <a href="http://www.ada.org/en/~/media/ADA/Publications/Files/ADA_PatientSmart_Gum_Recession">these situations might be the reason</a>: </p><ul><li>Brushing your teeth aggressively and improperly</li><li>Gum disease </li><li>Having tongue and lip piercings </li><li>Poor oral hygiene</li><li>Age </li><li>Genetics </li><li>Smoking and tobacco use </li></ul><p>There are <a href="https://www.uthscsa.edu/patient-care/dental/services/gum-grafting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three main types of gum grafting procedures</a>: </p><ul><li><strong>Free gingival graft</strong>: Tissue is removed from the top palate of the roof of your mouth and attached to the area where your gum is thinning.</li><li><strong>Pedicle graft</strong>: Here healthy gum tissue is removed from a site close to the receding gum tissue and used to cover the recession. </li><li><strong>Connective tissue graft</strong>: A small flap is opened in the roof of your mouth, some connective tissue is then taken from underneath the flap and grafted onto the recession.</li></ul><p>A gum graft procedure can cost anything between hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on the extent of your recession, how much graft you'll need, and if you'll be needing tissue from a donor. </p><h2>What to expect during the gum graft procedure </h2><p>Gum graft procedures typically follow the following steps, says<a href="https://case.edu/medicine/msc/about/medical-humanities-and-social-medicine-advisory-committee/leena-palomo" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"> Leena Palomo, DDS, MSD</a>, a professor of periodontics at Case Western Reserve University. </p><ol><li>You are first sedated so you don't feel pain. A variety of anesthesia options from twilight sedation to local anesthetic are available depending on your needs.  </li><li>Once you are comfortable, and your periodontist is sure you won't feel any pain, the gingiva to be grafted is harvested either from another part of the mouth. It can also be gotten from a donor, if you don't have tissue that can be grafted. </li><li>This gingiva is then attached to the area of the gum that is receding.  Underneath the surface, new cells are working hard to heal. Although you might feel back to normal in just over a week, the cells underneath continue to work and grow, the cells continue to generate even up to a year after surgery.  </li></ol><p>A gum graft is an outpatient procedure which means in most cases, you won't be kept overnight. However, if you drove to the procedure, you should make arrangements for someone else to take you home. This is because the effect of your sedation might not have completely worn off. </p><h2>Gum graft recovery</h2><p>After the procedure, you need to take care to keep the site of the grafting undisturbed. Many of your eating and lifestyle habits will be altered until your gum heals properly. </p><p>Eating hard foods like apples and corn is discouraged. Before you go in for your procedure, it's a good idea to stock up on foods that will be easy on your gums and won't affect your healing process. </p><p>The following foods are great examples of foods to eat after getting a gum graft procedure: </p><ul><li>Oatmeal </li><li>Avocado </li><li>Mashed potatoes </li><li>Eggs </li></ul><p>You'll also be given a list of post-operative instructions by your periodontist. It's important to follow these instructions so your gum graft can heal swiftly and properly. The most common things you'll be asked to do include: </p><ul><li>Not to brush or floss the grafted area until it's properly healed</li><li>To use a fluoride mouthwash daily, to prevent plaque build-up and infections</li><li>If there's swelling, you'll be asked to use a cold compress against your face to reduce the swelling</li><li>Avoid foods you have to chew for at least 24 hours after the procedure</li><li>Not to participate in taxing physical activities until you have healed properly </li><li>Not to eat hard, spicy or hot foods that can irritate your graft as it heals</li></ul><p>After the procedure, you can expect the grafted gum to heal in a few weeks. You shouldn't expect to see results immediately, as the newly grafted gum needs time to heal properly.  The graft may appear a different color at first , but it should blend into your natural gum color over time. </p><p>"Although the gingival recession defect is immediately visible after the surgery, most people are discouraged from disturbing the site for the first few weeks.  Within the first month you can see your new beautiful smile and enjoy restored function," says Palomo.</p><p>You might also be prescribed some antibiotics to help prevent infections and over-the-counter or prescription painkillers depending on the extensiveness of your procedure and how much pain you might be in. </p><h2>Insider's takeaway </h2><p>A gum graft is a necessary dental procedure for people who are experiencing gum recession.
