<keyword id="166992" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota-Kirloskar">Toyota Kirloskar</keyword> is looking forward to build India's safest small car, which it claimed will be the most fuel-efficient and value-for-money for Indian car buyers. With the car, the company is hoping to challenge the might of <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> and <keyword id="108829" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword> in this space. 
 <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> Kirloskar had failed to make major inroads in the small car space, and is banking on the integration work between <keyword id="117665" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Daihatsu">Daihatsu</keyword> and Toyota which will start in full swing, to target the Indian A and B segment car space. 
 <keyword id="3268151" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akito-Tachibana">Akito Tachibana</keyword>, MD of Toyota Kirloskar, said that he is excited about the involvement of <keyword id="4019261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="daihatsu-toyota">Daihatsu Toyota</keyword> in the collaborative activity. 
 
"The most favourable story for us is that cars developed by Daihatsu will be made for the local market and at an affordable price. We will begin research to assess customer expectations in each market to define the concept of a vehicle before any development,” he told ET. 
 Models like <keyword id="106889" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Etios">Etios</keyword> and Liva compact cars were earlier designed for India but these models did little for the company. This will be yet another attempt by Toyota to enter the small car space, thanks to Daihatsu's low-cost technology. 
 
Tachibana, who had been in product planning in the past, is giving two briefs to his development team - the car should be the safest and it should have a pure hybrid solution. 
 
Toyota has been exploring a small car and a compact MPV and SUV for India, but they will only come after BSVI regulations are implemented by April 2020, said people familiar with the matter. 
 
With the government pushing for electric and hybrid cars, Toyota is planning to bring in small hybrid vehicles in the future. As a first step, the car company will be bringing in the locally produced Corolla hybrid in the next 12-18 months. 
 The company is likely to bring in the new Corolla Altis, a new mid-size segment sedan to take on <keyword id="31353" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-city">Honda City</keyword>, and is also likely to introduce the <keyword id="6415837" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lexus">Lexus</keyword> brand in India, which will come with a hybrid alternative.

Toyota to challenge the might of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai with its safest and most fuel efficient so far

Many international auto manufacturer are now looking forward to entering the Indian industry and the list includes auto giants like South Korea's Kia Motor, <keyword id="117665" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Daihatsu">Daihatsu</keyword> from <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword>, PSA Group's Peugeot Citreon and three car makers from China, Beiqi Foton, <keyword id="64310" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAIC">SAIC</keyword> and Changan Automotive, who are devising an India strategy to be part of market set to be the third largest in the world by the end of the decade. 
 Reportedly, Kia Motor would be the first to announce its entry in India. The company is close to finalising the location in <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> for its plant and is set to launch its cars in India by 2019. Daihatsu and Toyota has just kicked off the emerging markets compact car company to plan products for the emerging markets like India while PSA Group will finalise its India partnership by 2018 with an eye on 2020-2021 roll-out. 
 
Chinese automaker, Beiqi Foton which originally acquired a land in Chakan, Pune, to enter the Indian commercial vehicle space, decided to shift focus and bring in passenger vehicles under Borgward brand. The company has already started discussing with vendors a plan to localise a large Van and clutch of SUVs in India by 2019-2020. 
 <keyword id="4581" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-motors">General Motors</keyword>' Chinese joint venture partner, Shangai Automotive Industry Corporation or SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, is feverishly negotiating with <keyword id="44666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Motors-India">General Motors India</keyword> to acquire the latter's Halol facility. The negotiation is expected to conclude soon. 
 Experts feel that the Indian market will see cumulative 60 million cars hitting the roads in the next one decade and clearly they won't be from the <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> and <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> stables alone. 
 
"With Chinese market correcting itself and a lot of matured markets seeing marginal growth, India is on everyone's radar. Not only will the market expand, there will be more choices and the competition will further intensify, thereby making consumers the winner,' Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst for forecasting at IHS Markit Automotive, told ET. 
 
"As we have yet to formally announce any final decision to enter the Indian market, I am afraid that we cannot comment nor confirm any of the rumors as such,” a spokesperson for Kia Motor, told ET. 
 PSA Group Chairman Carlos Tavares had recently confirmed that India is part of its Push to Pass mid-term plan. The company is learnt to have had talks with Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, General Motors India and <keyword id="132800" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Motors">Hindustan Motors</keyword> for contract manufacturing in India. It is likely to produce cars on contract manufacturing but will sell the cars through its own independent outlets, said one of the eight people cited above. Once the partnership is finalised in 2018, PSA is likely to start selling cars by 2020-2021. 
 
Come October 2017, Indian safety standards are set to be overhauled, which will mandate a frontal and a side crash, making cars more safer and would have a fuel efficiency norm with star rating, which is in the pipelne and finally the biggest change in terms of stringent BS VI emission norms to be implemented by 2020, all this will align Indian market with global stage, which may have led to increased interest say experts.

Supreme Court has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=diesel+ban&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">banned registration of diesel vehicles</a> having 2000 cc engine or above in the National Capital Region, the biggest automobile market in India. 
 
The ban is affecting the already struggling sector in India. 
 
"Who is making the regulation? Is it the court, or is it the government," Vikram Kirloskar, vice-chairman of Toyota Kirloskar, asked while speaking to ET on the sidelines of a CII event. 
 
"Once you are in a situation like this, you will say 'stop', and hold all investments. There is nothing that is going to happen until we are clear who makes the law in India. We are being punished for following the law, for which no one has an answer. It is absolutely impinging on my rights. Until that issue is sorted out, there will be no investment," he said. 
 After Delhi-NCR, the <keyword id="146133" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Green-Tribunal">National Green Tribunal</keyword> had banned the sale of large diesel vehicles in the top cities of Kerala, which was then stayed by the Kerala High Court. 
 
Recently, Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, had hoped that the ministries would take into account the imperatives of economics and investments that the industry is making. 
 
"The government's responsibility is to lay out a road map for technology, where it wants to go, and then tell the industry certainly through carrot and stick that you better move to this," he had said.

Toyota is holding back launch of its new models and this is not good

The carmaker is also mulling to introduce <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Struggling-In-India-Toyota-Asks-Daihatsu-Minicar-Unit-To-Help-Sources/articleshow/45065968.cms">Daihatsu</a> brand, a Toyota subsidiary that makes small cars and compact utility vehicles, in India. 
 
In an exclusive interview with Economic Times, Toyota Motor Chairman TakeshiUchiyamada said, “We can expect a lot of growth and development in India. As for our investment, the latest investment has gone into the new engine manufacturing units, which will start operation next year and there is a plan for a new model change, which will call for further investment in India.” 
 If everything goes as planned, <keyword id="117665" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Daihatsu">Daihatsu</keyword> may enter India by 2018-19. 
 
Toyota Kirloskar has made profits of over Rs 500 crore in FY-15. This year, the carmaker did not launch new vehicles, but concentrated on building a brand franchise. 
 
The company has plans to rely on the all new Innova, which is planned for first half of 2016, and Fortuner, which will come during 2016 festive season. 
 
Reportedly, Toyota is planning to produce about 90,000 units of Innova annually and 30,000 units of Fortuner. 
 
In a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=car+market">market</a> that grew by 7% in the first four months of this fiscal year, <keyword id="118748" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toyota-Kirloskar-Motor">Toyota Kirloskar Motor</keyword> has grown in tandem with the market. 
 
Also, Toyota plans to increase the average localisation to over 85% in the coming few years, from 65-70%.

They were made by several manufacturers, and models include the <a href="https://www.slashgear.com/1277361/5-of-the-best-japanese-kei-trucks-you-can-buy/">Daihatsu Hijet, the Subaru Sambar, the Suzuki Carry, and the Honda Acty</a>.The tiny trucks are a common sight on Japanese roads, but they've also won over some Americans wanting a versatile, compact — and cheap — vehicle.<h2>Kei cars</h2>One of the companies importing them to the US is <a href="https://japancardirect.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japan Car Direct</a>. More recent models in particular face certain Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency restrictions. Kei trucks are typically limited to 25 mph depending on the state. In <a href="https://www.dmv.pa.gov/Pages/Mini-Trucks-FAQ.aspx?_ga=2.230644377.42524721.1686841986-1091427919.1686841986" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pennsylvania</a>, for example, they must be registered as off-road vehicles, while California's tighter environmental laws make it difficult to use a Kei truck there, Matusiak said.Vehicles more than 25 years old aren't subject to restrictions, and account for most of those imported to the US, he said.Japan Car Direct and its competitors will walk customers through the import process, which requires several forms to be completed.However, there's still a certain amount of faith required to buy a car from a foreign country without first being able to see it, Matusiak acknowledged: "It's a lot to digest, for sure."
