Leading <keyword id="34523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg" source="Orion">FMCG</keyword> and ayurvedic products maker <keyword id="62997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dabur" source="Orion">Dabur</keyword> is planning to set up a new <keyword id="6368585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="factory" source="Orion">factory</keyword> in <keyword id="6355466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="south-india" source="Orion">South India</keyword> in less than a year's time, as its <keyword id="6355515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business" source="Orion">business</keyword> scales in the region, according to company's CEO Mohit Malhotra. Dabur, which now gets 20 per cent of its domestic sales from South India with its business there doubling in the last 5-6 years, is identifying gaps and usages to launch products customised to the markets, he told PTI in an interview. The company, having 13 manufacturing units across the country, is augmenting its capacity further to meet the demand and is diversifying its manufacturing activities by adding new lines, he added. Dabur India, which has an annual capex of around Rs 350-450 crore, also plans to expand its manufacturing activities in the international markets catering to regions such as the Middle East and Europe. Besides, the company is consolidating its manufacturing operations and has shut down some units where tax sunsets are coming in, and opening new units where GST regime is coming in, Malhotra added. On Dabur's business in South India, Malhotra said,"We have made substantial progress in South India... it now contributes 19 to 20 per cent of Dabur's domestic business. This was not even 10 per cent around seven to eight years back and thus contribution from the Southern region has doubled." When asked about the new plant in South India, Malhotra said,"I do not think it's a few years away. Maybe it is a year away .Within a year, we might plan something for South of India as business scales up." Dabur's last investment to open a new unit was at Indore, where it had invested around Rs 350 crore. In the southern market, several FMCG makers, including Wipro have jumped into the food segment with relevant regional offerings. Dabur is identifying gaps there to launch customised products. "We are creating a framework in the company where we can create products which are exclusively meant for the South of India for which we have got this framework called RISE, which is regional insights, speed and execution," said Malhotra. Some brands such as Dabur Red, contribute 40 per cent of its business in South India and Dabur Honey and Odonil are very salient there, he added. "So we are looking at a lot of pollination of products in South of India to increase our saliency," he said. However, Malhotra also added that in comparison with other FMCG makers having a saliency of 30 per cent, Dabur's salience is in the range of 20 per cent. "So there is a huge gap of 10 to 15 per cent to be covered in the South. That is an area that will be our focus for geographical growth," he added. Talking on international markets, he said MENA (Middle East &amp; North Africa) is the largest market and a "growth frontier". It has a manufacturing facility in the UAE and uses the Greater Arab Free Trade Area Agreement (GAFTA) to cater to Saudi Arabia. "If Saudi Arabia opens up and scales up, we might look at a manufacturing unit even in Saudi Arabia. We have another second unit in Egypt, which is the second largest market after Saudi Arabia," he said. Dabur uses Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) while manufacturing in Egypt and supplying to East Africa. Dabur also has a factory in Turkiye, which ships to European markets. It also has a factory in South Africa which caters to SADC (Country / Southern African Development Community) markets of 12 countries. While in the US, it has a contract manufacturer, which also caters to the Canadian market. "Business is doing well in international markets. There is a recovery after Covid but geopolitical issues are always there," said Malhotra while referring to trouble brewing in the Middle East, and the Russia-Ukraine War.

<ul><li>A report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) claims that most big Indian brands, including Dabur, Patanjali and Emami, are selling <keyword id="8464467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="adulterated-honey">adulterated honey</keyword>. And that these brands failed an adulteration test carried out by a foreign laboratory. </li><li>10 out of 13 honey brands have failed the ‘purity test, the investigation by CSE reveals.</li><li>However, companies have refuted these allegations. In an email statement to Business Insider, Dabur said that “the recent reports seem motivated and aimed at maligning our brand.”</li><li>Indian billionaire businessman Acharya Balkrishan from Patanjali also called the report “a plot to defame Indian natural honey industry.” And, added that it might be a way of promoting German technology in India.</li></ul>Top branded honey producers in India, including Dabur, Patanjali, and Emami are allegedly selling adulterated honey with a modified sugar, according to a report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). It claims that the big brands failed an adulteration test carried out by a foreign laboratory. However, the leading Indian brands have denied these reports calling them malicious and baseless; and that they comply with the guidelines laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In an email statement to Business Insider, Dabur said that the recent reports “seem motivated and aimed at maligning our brand. We assure our consumers that <keyword id="425049" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dabur-Honey">Dabur Honey</keyword> is 100% Pure. It is 100% indigenous, collected naturally from Indian sources and packed with no added sugar or other adulterants.” The manufacturer of Zandu Pure Honey, Emami also said that its “honey conforms and adheres to all the protocols and quality norms/standards laid down by the Government of India and its authorized entities such as FSSAI.” Indian billionaire businessman Acharya Balkrishan from Patanjali has called the report “a plot to defame Indian natural honey industry.” He also added that it might be a way of promoting German technology in India. CSE investigates how the brands adulterated honey The CSE investigation reveals that the companies mixed the naturally acquired honey from bees with sugar syrup procured from rice, corn, beetroot, and sugarcane and passed them off as pure. It also added that almost all brands of honey being sold in Indian markets are adulterated with sugar syrup. The organisation said the repeated use of the terms fructose and glucose on Chinese websites prompted them to look at the imports of these from China.And, when they checked Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry export import database, the two of the FSSAI named syrups — rice syrup and golden syrup — could not be found. However, “Invert sugar” had an HS code but limited shipments. These are the findings: The adulterated honey passed tests of purity when first tested at the Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock and Food (CALF) at the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in Gujarat. However, when the same brands were tested using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) laboratory tests, which is currently used globally to check for such modified sugar syrups – almost all big and small brands failed, the report said. <ul><li>77% of the samples were found to be adulterated with addition of sugar syrup.</li><li>Out of 22 samples tested, only five passed all the tests.</li><li>Honey samples from leading brands such as Dabur, Patanjali, Baidyanath, Zandu, Hitkari and Apis Himalaya, all failed the NMR test.</li><li>Only 3 out of the 13 brands – Saffola, Markfed Sohna and Nature’s Nectar (one out of two samples) — passed all the tests. </li></ul>CSE raises the red flag The director general of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) Sunita Narain said, “It is a food fraud more nefarious and more sophisticated than what we found in our 2003 and 2006 investigations into soft drinks; more damaging to our health than perhaps anything that we have found till now – keeping in mind the fact that we are still fighting against a killer COVID-19 pandemic with our backs to the wall. This overuse of sugar in our diet will make it worse.” CSE also claimed that the Indian government might be aware of this adulteration and is not interested in digging it. “We filed an application under the Right To Information Act (RTI) We filed an application under the Right To Information Act (RTI) with the Imports Division of FSSAI. FSSAI has said it has sent the RTI application to another division but has not cared to say which one So, either FSSAI knows what is going on, and is not telling us—the consumers—or, it is fishing around to see if it can find the honey fraud and stop it,” the report added. <div type="image" title="new honey" msid="79545208" hostid="261"></div> Business Insider checked out the labels of <keyword id="3239929" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patanjali-honey">Patanjali Honey</keyword> and Dabur Honey to check if it mentions Fructose-Glucose ratio, which needs to be under 0.95-1.5% by mass. However, the company does not reveal that detail on the label. The labels from both these companies did mention that there is no added sugar and the products match the FSSAI standards. Debunking ‘pure honey’ myths Pure honey is pasteurized but contains no added ingredients. Myth: You cannot test honey’s purity Fact: To test adulteration in honey, you can add a teaspoon of the honey in a glass full of water. The adulterated honey will dissolve quickly in the water, whereas the pure honey with a more dense texture will settle right at the bottom as lumps. However, the CSE claims that it even manipulated the first safety check at CSE, so it can easily deceive the home-based tests. Dabur, Patanjali, and Emami decry a study that found what you buy is not all honey

Dabur The company has responded to a study by the Delhi-based NGO Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and said that its honey had passed the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) test in Germany and it is complying with 22 parameters mandated by FSSAI for testing honey. The CSE study shows that 10 of the 13 brands of honey sold in India, including Dabur had failed the NMR test. The shares of Dabur ended 0.61% lower on Wednesday. DHFL The Committee of Creditors for cash-strapped DHFL has voted in favour of inviting revised bids. And, December 14 has been set as the new deadline to submit bids. New Delhi, Apr 15 () FMCG major Dabur India on Wednesday said the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown will have "material" impact on the company's production and sales in March and will continue till the lockdown stays during the current financial year. Production of the company would remain suspended in the wake of extension of the lockdown period till May 3, except for the essential items and would have an impact on the company. The company further added that it is "difficult to evaluate or quantify" the impact at this stage, and the company would continue to monitor the situation. "On account of Covid-19 and consequent lockdown since March, the impact on our production and sales will be material. This impact has been experienced in March and will continue till the lockdown stays during the current financial year," Dabur India said. The company would continue to produce essential Items including - hand sanitizers, hand wash, disinfectants, ayurvedic medicines, juices, coconut water and honey. While operating its manufacturing units at several locations for producing essential goods, Dabur India has implemented strict measures like ensuring social distancing, hygiene practices and deep cleansing of premises to ensure the safety of our workers and staff. "Even as we face disruptions, Dabur has been taking steps to mitigate the impact of the lockdown while ensuring the safety of our people involved in operations/supply chain and consumers at large," said Dabur. Like some other FMCG makers, Dabur has also tied up with online delivery service providers to deliver its products to retail outlets and consumers during the lockdown period. On March 23, Dabur India had announced suspension of its manufacturing operations across India, excluding essential items such as Ayurvedic medicines, and hand sanitisers. However, it looks like the fad is about to come to an end. Even though the company aims to double its revenue to Rs 21,000 crore this financial year, rival FMCG players are going out of their way to recapture their market shares across segments. While <keyword id="178761" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hindustan-Unilever-Limited">Hindustan Unilever Limited</keyword> has started to focus on its Ayush brand of naturals/herbals products, <keyword id="80626" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Colgate-Palmolive">Colgate-Palmolive</keyword> has also brought out its range of natural products so that it can reclaim its market in the toothpaste segment. <keyword id="62997" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabur">Dabur</keyword> too has declared that Patanjali dominance is over in the honey segment. "Primary shipments of Ayush have started," said Sanjiv Mehta, CEO and Managing Director at India's largest consumer goods maker. "In two to three weeks, you will start seeing much more activity happening in the marketplace. It's a multi-category launch. We're very pleased with the results in South India and now we're very excited in rolling it out nationally," he said at the June quarter earnings call. Talking of the skincare space, HUL is bringing Citra to India, which offers skin care products with far-Eastern ingredients like Japanese Green tea, Sakura and Thai Lotus. As per analysts, Citra will cement HUL's dominance in the skincare sentiment, helping it ward off the competition it has from herbal players like Patanjali, Dabur and <keyword id="26169" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="himalaya">Himalaya</keyword>. Patanjali has reported Rs 10,561 crore revenue for FY17, out of which Patanjali Ayurved contributed Rs 9,346 crore and <keyword id="2830840" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Divya-Pharmacy">Divya Pharmacy</keyword> contributed Rs 870 crore. Dabur, another FMCG major from India is said to be already working on a strategy to take on rival Patanjali, which includes modernising its Ayurveda portfolio and introducing a range of new products.

The shares of these FMCG giants, which have dominated the industry, had expensive valuations and this can lead of downgrade of earnings. 
 <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> is trading at 88 times to its 12-month earnings; whereas <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=emami">Emami</a> is around 44-times. 
 Meanwhile, Dabur is trading at about 40 times and <keyword id="80626" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colgate-Palmolive">Colgate-Palmolive</keyword>'s valuations are at 39.5 times to its one-year earnings. 
 <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> products, which range from soap to medicines, have become an instant hit among consumers. 
 
Patanjali clocked revenues of about Rs 450 crore in fiscal year 2012 and shares of Colgate-Palmolive declined 21.7% in last one year. 
 
Aditya Mathur, research analyst at Citi, told ET, “There are competitive pressures for the incumbents due to Patanjali. The pricing of products might be an issue in categories such as health supplements, including honey, chyawanprash, and also certain premium segments like hand and face wash, and others, where the price value equation could work in Patanjali's favour."

And, that means the cost of production is significantly higher for electrical appliance makers like Havells and V-Guard Industries. Especially in the case of V-Guard, which is popular for its inverters and voltage stabilisers, over 46% of the cost is copper, according to analysts at Edelweiss. But a big chunk of the rise may not land in their bank accounts ⁠— it will go into provident fund and gratuity contribution, instead⁠ — because the new labour codes would have kicked in from April 1. Of course, if the second wave triggers another economic crisis, many families may not even have the same amount of cushion from their past savings. In the last five years, the average annual household savings in India has grown 64%. However, in the same time, average household debt has increased 133%, according to the latest data from the RBI. None of this would be comforting for households staring at a limited income and an uncertain future.
