The University of Delhi has released a list of 6,100 <keyword id="21977691" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vacant-seats" source="keywords">vacant seats</keyword> for the second round of undergraduate <keyword id="19962926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="admissions" source="keywords">admissions</keyword>, following the conclusion of the first round. Vacant seats have been displayed on the dashboards of the candidates. With 91.98 per cent (65,843) of seats already filled, candidates have been provided the opportunity to re-order their (college and course) preferences from August 22 to 23. The university aims to begin the <keyword id="20248930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="academic-session" source="keywords">academic session</keyword> on August 29. As many as 65,843 candidates have confirmed their admission to undergraduate courses at <keyword id="19927119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="keywords">Delhi University</keyword> in the first round. The total number of <keyword id="22671029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="undergraduate-seats" source="keywords">undergraduate seats</keyword> in <keyword id="21617246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DU-colleges" source="keywords">DU colleges</keyword> is around 71,600. Early this month, the university began the allocation acceptance process, offering 97,387 seats in the first round. To ensure optimal seat occupancy, the administration decided to make extra allocations, targeting an academic session starting on August 29. The university is conducting admissions for 71,600 seats (excluding supernumerary seats) in 69 colleges and departments. There are 1,559 programme-college combinations available for admissions. This year, DU has introduced a feature on the candidates' dashboard, enabling them to view the details of <keyword id="22889419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cutoffs-and-ranks" source="keywords">cutoffs and ranks</keyword> determining seat allocation based on category and quota. Earlier in the month, the University of Delhi (DU) climbed five spots to secure the 6th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (<keyword id="20051367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirf" source="keywords">NIRF</keyword>) 2024. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh attributed this achievement to the collective efforts of the university's faculty, students, and staff. In the university category at the national level, DU had previously moved up two spots to reach the 11th position last year. This year, the university continued its upward trajectory, also climbing seven places in the overall ranking to secure the 15th spot.

Delhi University admissions: Only 6,100 undergraduate seats up for grabs in Round 2

The special admission process of <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> began from Tuesday after incorporating some stringent terms and conditions in the merit list. This process is for those students who were eligible to take admission on the basis of first, second or third cut-offs but could not submit applications due to some reasons. They will be admitted through a special cut-off, released by the university authorities. Talking to IANS, Registrar of Delhi University, <keyword id="6361106" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikas-gupta" source="Orion">Vikas Gupta</keyword>, said: "On the basis of the <keyword id="12392409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="special-cut-off-list" source="Orion">special cut-off list</keyword>, applications for admission can be submitted from October 26, 10 a.m. to October 27 noon. The specific cut-offs are decided by the colleges based on the availability of vacant seats. These colleges will approve the eligible applications by October 28 and the fees needs to be deposited by October 29. No complaint will be entertained if a candidate fails to apply or make payment after this." The special cut-off list demands marks ranging between 96 and 99 per cent for admission to various courses in most colleges and is offering more opportunity for students under reserved category as compared to those under general category. It has fixed 98.25 per cent cut-off for Economics, 98.75 per cent for B.Com Honours and 98.25 per cent for History. Delhi University has a total of 70,000 seats for undergraduate courses and has, so far, released three cut-off lists for admission to these seats. As many as 1,70,186 students have applied on the basis of all the three cut-offs, till now. Out of these, only 58,000 students have received admission offers from various colleges. Delhi University has made a sudden change in their admission eligibility after they released their first cut-off list this year, as a result of which several students who scored 99 per cent marks were also denied admission to many reputed colleges of the country like Hindu, Hansraj and Ramjas. Delhi University to begin academic session from August 10 with online classes

Delhi University is conducting online open book exams for final semester students of postgraduate and undergraduate courses. The move was opposed by students and teachers who were demanding that the exams be scrapped. The varsity has also commenced online classes for third and fifth semester students from August 10. During an online briefing, Abha Dev Habib, a Delhi University professor, said teachers and students have been left out from the decision-making process to hold online classes. "The decision of online open book exams was taken without thinking about students. What will happen to students in Kashmir and those stuck in floods. The students do not have gadgets for online classes. "The decision was taken without consulting the statutory bodies -- the Academic and Executive Council," she alleged. Unni Maya, a student of Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi University, said the varsity has gone ahead with the decision to hold online classes without thinking about the mental health and well-being of students. Taking online classes means that students have to spend a high screen time in front of their mobiles or laptops which impacts their health. She demanded that the varsity should think about funding and providing gadgets to students and it should also release department-wise data on how many students have availed online classes. Students and teachers of other universities also raised similar issues. Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh said the varsity administration is not concerned about teaching-learning process or about students in Kashmir who still do not have access to a proper internet connectivity, or about flood-affected students or those who contracted COVID-19. "Students are being pressurised to register for the next semester at a time when the UGC has also said that the varsities must finish the current semester by September 30. There is no meaning of registration. The varsity administration is continuously creating issues," she said. She also alleged that the students of MBA and Engineering are being charged lakhs of rupees despite not having access to labs and having part-time faculty. "I would call it daylight robbery. Even the representatives from these departments have been pressurised to not raise their voice," she said. She also urged the varsity to ensure phased return of students to the campus by following proper medical protocols and establishing quarantine centres inside the premises. Voices were also raised from Delhi government-run Ambedkar University against online classes and how the administration and even the state government has not heard their pleas. Shubhojeet Dey of Ambedkar University said they had conducted a survey among students and found that 48 per cent of students had access to smartphones while two per cent did not have access to any gadget for accessing online classes. Only 50 per cent of the students have access to laptops, he said, adding that 62 per cent out of these do not have laptops for more than three hours since the laptop is also used by their siblings, who are either studying or are working. "It was found that 73 per cent of students do not have stable internet connection and 98 per cent of the female students were also supposed to contribute to household chores. We have even approached the authorities and even the Delhi government with our problems but there has been no resolution," he added. The students had boycotted the orientation class which was held to introduce the students to courses. Listing out the demands of the students, Dey said they want that the classes should be postponed by a month and laptops should be procured for students from disadvantaged sections and data packs should be given to all the students. Delhi University hikes fees, holds online classes — students and teachers voice their concern

When the Honourable <keyword id="15204227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shri-Hardeep-S-Puri" source="Orion">Shri Hardeep S. Puri</keyword> wrote to me about his plans to publish an anthology to celebrate the centenary of <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> and invited me as a celebrated alumnus to write a few words on this magnificent occasion, I wrote back and told him that I was the wrong person to be asked to do this. I did not believe that I fell into the category of 'eminent personalities' he had given reference to, as my years at the university (1958-61) were an academic embarrassment to me. If I were to write something, it would all be rather frivolous and not in keeping with the grace and intent of the anthology, I told him. But he persisted, and I relented. The DU (North Campus) where I sought admission and studied was, perhaps, patterned along the lines of the Cambridge and Oxford universities in the United Kingdom (UK), where several colleges stood side by side at one prominent location, many sharing common boundaries - not just of the physical built environment but also of a deeper educative ethos of imparting the requisite attitudes, values and knowledge to build generations of leaders. This is shared situatedness imbued immense camaraderie among the students. We would stroll into each other's colleges, mix with fellow students, relax at each other's canteens, travel in the same university bus to our home locations, become bitter rivals at intercollegiate competitions, and immediately forget all that animosity to join our voices in cheering for the university when it played against another. This was 1958, and I was at Kirori Mal College pursuing the BSc General course, from which I just about graduated in my final year. Academically, it was the wrong decision to take up Science, but the years spent there were an education in many other spheres, which has proved to be invaluable in my life. Looking back at the influence of my education on my career, I realize that it is the amalgamation of diverse disciplines that inspires every form of creative activity. For instance, where would writers be without a printing press, stage thespians without a proscenium and lights, painters without pigments and canvas, and, in my case, film actors without a camera? Education engenders myriad symbiotic opportunities in the spheres of technology and humanities. Chances are very high that I would not have been in cinema or in any other creative aspect of life without a grounding in education-education which is in consonance with the belief that 'what sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul'. Before leaving the hallowed grounds of university, we sculpt our identity; we strengthen and fortify our convictions in a manner that we do not fall into a trap-the trap of being swayed by the prejudices of caste and creed, and race and religion. During my days at the university, classes were held at the main university building, while the subsidiaries and practicals were conducted at the various individual colleges. It goes without saying that there is a palpable nostalgia as I think back on the hours spent at the Coffee House, or at the bus stop outside Miranda House (yes, always outside Miranda House), or on the sports field that would host intercollegiate and inter-university cricket matches, and, of course, in the classroom where regular attendance paid its dividends when it came to term-end examinations. If I may be permitted to stroll down memory lane a little more, it was at DU that I received my first serious encouragement as an actor. The tall and imposing Mr Frank Thakurdas of the dramatics club paid me my first compliment when I performed in a stage production of Maxwell Anderson's "Winterset". He recommended me to the USIS drama company to play the part of Abraham Lincoln, and chose me for the part of Zeus in Benn Levy's "The Rape of the Belt", staged at Miranda House. Mr Thakurdas remains a part of me. So does Dr Swaroop Singh, a messianic educationist who was the principal of Kirori Mal when I was studying there and later became the university's vice chancellor. Without saying it in so many words, he made us realize that we needn't aspire towards a graduation degree merely because of peer or parental pressure. He reminded us that we should aspire to become graduates because we feel the desire to be complete with the advantage of formal education. For argument's sake, some may opine today that education isn't mandatory any more, with the proliferation of what some may call 'unconventional' jobs and vocations. Some may wonder about the relevance of a degree if one cannot apply it later in one's profession. To my mind, these arguments are superfluous. To be sure, it is a bonus if we can use our education directly in our everyday work-in fact, that would be ideal. However, even if that weren't to be the case, the years spent on campus serve a much more vital purpose-they broaden our knowledge about the world around us, besides aiding personality development. Clearly, initiative in reading at the library, participating in cultural events, and asking more of ourselves and of our educationists, add up to making us aware and concerned citizens. As the proverb goes: Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. Moreover, no one can argue against the fact that campus life is the formative stage in every individual's life; that is when we 'remove the shackles', as it were. Suddenly, from a regimented life, we are free to make our decisions and heuristically zero in on the subject we want to study or the vocation we want to take up. It is a key period in any young person's life - one of choice. My father taught English and poetry, and he expected me to opt for Arts in college. When I didn't, he was accommodative and understanding. Certainly, the youth of today - in fact, of any day and age - does not want to be preached at. As time goes by, they become more clued-up and more aware of their needs and aspirations. They can see which route to take on the highway of the future. But, believe me, that is not enough. They must also know their speed limits, when to turn and when to apply the brakes. The <keyword id="151282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-delhi" source="Orion">University of Delhi</keyword> was absolutely essential in that regard. Time sped its way along, and then one fine day, almost 50 years after I joined Kirori Mal, I was informed that Delhi University was decorating me with an honorary doctorate. The first sentiment was to express my limitless gratitude. Who would have thought that an ordinary student graduate would someday be accorded such an overwhelming homecoming? My immediate response after that was to ask myself if I deserved an honour of such magnitude. Was I worthy to be honoured by my university, my very own family, which gave me some of the most wonderful years of my life? This was the same institution that inculcated in me the values and principles of life that I cherish deeply and will abide by to my dying day. Among all the accolades that I have been extremely fortunate to have received, it is, perhaps ironically, being bestowed with this honorary doctorate that I regard as one of the highest honours. A lifelong debt is owed to the University of Delhi. I feel it is only fair that I reciprocate the tremendous faith and honour the university has shown me. This anthology, edited by Shri Hardeep S. Puri ji and including some fascinating entries by other more deserving alumni of the DU family, allows me to pay my respects. Indeed, it was a privilege to be at the nation's premier seat of learning-one which has always championed the cause of education since its inception a hundred years ago. My best wishes to the University of Delhi. The varsity has maintained that it is opting for the open book examination mode as a one-time measure in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Arun Attri, a professor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, said the new exam mode has ended uncertainty for over 2 lakh students who now know that since they have taken the exams, they will get their results and can apply for Masters. He, however, said the open book exam is not a feasible option in the long run for the varsity which is known for its commerce and humanities courses. "Such exams may be feasible for engineering and science students, but won't serve the purpose for commerce and humanities courses. They are more like assignments rather than exams," Attri said. A professor, requesting anonymity, said such a mode of examination also raises concerns over cheating and use of fraudulent means by students. He said teachers have learnt about students sharing answers on social messaging platforms like WhatsApp. "There is no way to check such instances. The answers to many questions are easily available on the internet and students will just copy them. How do we know whether a student has actually understood what he has written? It is disadvantageous for those who actually put in hard work and prepare for the exams," the professor added. "The students are in touch with each other over WhatsApp. Even those students, who may not be willing to share answers, are forced to do so in the name of friendship. There is no way we can check this or keep a tab on it. If I get the same answer in 10 answer sheets, how am I supposed to evaluate them?" another professor rued. <keyword id="587567" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University-teachers">Delhi University Teachers</keyword>' Association treasurer Abha Dev Habib said all students have the same study material. "Earlier, the students would visit libraries and take additional notes, but due to the pandemic that has not been possible. I have sent the same notes to every student and they will be relying on similar material," she said. Abha, who teaches at Miranda House, said teachers are awaiting clarity on how they will evaluate the answer sheets. "We do not know whether we will be sent the answer sheets or given a login to the portal. We do not know which software will we be using to evaluate the answer sheets. There has been no training given to us on this," she said. Pankaj Garg, former academic council member and a professor of Rajdhani College, concurred with Abha and said teachers will face difficulties in evaluating the examinees. "There is a fair possibility that there would be swapping of the pages while scanning and uploading, this would disturb the sequence... teachers will have to be very careful in connecting all those pages which belong to the same question," he said. While scanning, some pages may be blurred and it would be difficult to read them carefully. It would be equally difficult to connect to the next page and hence, the continuity of the answer would be lost, Garg said. For teachers, the most challenging point would be marking of pages, it seems that evaluation would take much longer, he added. Delhi University teachers doubt feasibility of open book exams — await clarity on evaluation guidelines

Many colleges under the university are admitting 20-40% more than their capacity. This is despite the fact that the university had already increased the number of seats, after implementing reservations for EWS (economically weaker sections). Recently, the Indian government announced that <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/ews-quota-in-du-mostly-vacant-due-to-high-cut-offs-1567442-2019-07-12">10% reservation</a> for the EWS category in government jobs and educational institutions. Nearly 6,000 new seats were added this year — including 282 for undergraduate courses. The university has 62,000 seats in total for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions this year. Foreign admissions are also on the rise this year. As many as 1,000 foreign students were admitted this year. Stressed infrastructure The ‘over admissions’ is not new to the university. However, increase in student admissions is unmatched compared to the previous years. For instance, Miranda House enrolled roughly 1,814 students, 714 more than the number of seats. “We opened a new academic block and have turned some board and seminar rooms into classrooms as well,” Principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">told</a> HT, addressing the infrastructure crunch. In fact, to accommodate them, colleges allotted 80 students per teacher. “Teachers have taken over and above their share of the workload with the increase in the number of students,” Nanda added. Zakir Hussain College witnessed 1,816 admissions against 1,580 available seats — 236 more than the designated course seats. The college is trying to accommodate students in different sections and combinations, Hindustan Times <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">reported</a> citing PK Shishodia, admission official of the college. The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year, which has led to higher cut-offs in the university. According to the HT report, over 17,000 students scored 95% and above in CBSE highschool exams, which is 4,956 more than last year. Given that, the University of Delhi is considering one percent relaxation for students from government-run and rural schools. It’s mission: weed out fake documents submitted in student applications. While the students brace up for the admission process in Delhi University Board exam results, the university has <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/delhi-university-contacting-cbse-to-get-marksheets-directly-for-du-admissions-to-reduce-fake-document-submission-html-1480006-2019-03-17">directed the colleges to test the documents</a> submitted by the students to keep its authenticity in check. The authority has asked for the forensic analysis of the documents at the time of admission, which is expected to commence from 30 May 2019. The document forensics will be initiated in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) database. The move will allow the University of Delhi to access the class 12th results of the students. This comes in the back of raising concerns around the fraudulent cases in the recent past. From this year, the identity cards will look similar but have the name of the college stamped on it. The number of companies coming has more or less remained the same since last year, however the number of students that were made an offer to have increased,” Kanika K Ahuja, placement in-charge at LSR told ET. The students who get admission to these Delhi University-affiliated colleges have to score over 95% in the 12th grade — due to high cut-offs. The growing trend of summer placements The growing trend of summer placements and pre-placement offers too might have had an effect on the increased interest of recruiters. Companies like Deutsche Bank, Citi Bank are also banking on summer placements to assess talent, thereby extending pre-placement offers. The students then mailed to the varsity website their answer sheets and got an auto-generated response. </li><li>Pankaj Garg, a professor of Rajdhani College, said that the <keyword id="9732288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="main-problem">main problem</keyword> that students faced was in uploading the answer sheets. </li></ul> <keyword id="6360099" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university">Delhi University</keyword>'s online open book examinations for final-year undergraduate courses began on Monday with many students complaining about receiving two <keyword id="76676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Question-papers">question papers</keyword> and difficulty in uploading answer sheets. The exams began at 7.30 am and are being held in three shifts. Zubair Khan, a student of School of Open Learning (SOL), said, "I had my Hindi exam today according to the date-sheet. When I opened the portal for downloading my question paper, I found that two question papers were uploaded -- one of Hindi and another of the paper scheduled for August 13. I sent mails to the SOL but there was no response. I consulted a professor who advised me to attempt the paper scheduled for today." Another student, Deepak Gupta, said he was not sure if he could successfully upload his answer sheets before the scheduled time of 11.30 am. "It was 11.28 am by the time I finished creating PDF files (of my answer sheets). I tried to upload them but they didn't get uploaded. I have mailed them to the designated ID but do not know whether they will be accepted," he added. They were not sure whether their answer sheets were uploaded. The college received answer sheets on email post 11.30 am, which was the scheduled time," he said. Garg also said that teachers will face issues while evaluating answer sheets. "There is a fair possibility that there would be swapping of the pages while scanning and uploading, this would disturb the sequence.... Teachers have to be very very careful in connecting all those pages which belongs to the same question," he added. While scanning some pages may be blurred and it would be difficult to read them carefully and it would be more difficult to connect to the next page and hence the continuity of the answer would be lost, he added. For teachers, the most challenging point would be marking of pages, it seems that evaluation would take much longer, he stressed. The exams have been postponed several times. DU online open book exam begins, students complain about difficulty in uploading answer sheets

<ul><li>The University Grants Commission (UGC) has just issued a letter saying that the colleges falling under the university can now apply for an autonomous status using an online portal. </li><li>The autonomous college will be able to design their own courses, fee structure, and admissions. </li><li>Earlier in 2017, the move for privatisation was largely opposed by students and teachers.</li></ul>As colleges under the University of Delhi were considering to seek autonomy for some time, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has just issued a letter saying that the colleges falling under the university can now <a href="http://13.71.18.76:8085/College/Registration">apply</a> for an autonomous status online. The portal is now active on the official UGC site trying to give an impetus to colleges to become autonomous, should they choose to do so. However, these colleges will be affiliated to a university, TOI reported. In a notification, the UGC said it is inviting applications to colleges that want to pull away and be their own thing. This means that the colleges will now be able to roll out their own course structure, admissions, student fees and academic faculty staff. Moreover, the <keyword id="156640" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Autonomous-colleges">autonomous colleges</keyword> will also enjoy the liberty to announce results and issue marksheets as a separate entity. The move may affect students who are planning to enroll in several courses under Delhi University. Back in 2016, UGC had<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/six-autonomous-colleges-du-marches-ahead/"> floated guidelines</a> for autonomous colleges, encouraging colleges to apply. Given that, Delhi University had pushed colleges to become autonomous institutions.
