These plans are part of the varsity's long-term goals mapped in its <keyword id="23055482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Institutional-Development-Plan" source="keywords">Institutional Development Plan</keyword> (IDP) 2024, a perspective plan document which charts out the broad goals and objective the Delhi University (DU) wishes to achieve over a period of time. <br /><br /> According to the set goals, the university aims to establish a <keyword id="23500004" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DU-satellite" source="keywords">DU satellite</keyword> system that could play a major role in scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation as well as remote education. <br /><br /> However, if financial limitations arise, the DU may consider hiring services from organizations like the <keyword id="19915124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ISRO" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ISRO">ISRO</keyword> to make this plan a reality, the document states. <br /><br /> In addition, the DU is eyeing environmental sustainability with plans to introduce a <keyword id="23500006" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zero-emission-target" source="keywords">zero-emission target</keyword> by restricting <keyword id="23500005" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-vehicles" source="keywords">fossil fuel vehicles</keyword> on the campus. The university hopes to phase in electric vehicles, starting with areas like Chhatra Marg, to create a cleaner and greener environment for the students and staff. <br /><br /> The modalities of these projects and feasibility of their implementation will be decided as and when they are considered for rolling out. <br /><br /> Another major initiative the DU plans to introduce is a working lunch scheme for underprivileged students, offering free meals in the university cafeteria in exchange for work. The canteens will follow strict food safety standards and could collaborate with self-help groups for food procurement to support local communities, the IDP envisions. <br /><br /> Alongside these plans, the DU is looking at creating a "University Haat", on lines of the universities abroad, to set up a commercial shopping area where products developed by the university's <keyword id="23500008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="student-led-start-ups" source="keywords">student-led start-ups</keyword> can be showcased and put up for sale. The university's massive population of nearly six lakh people presents a unique market opportunity, the document states. <br /><br /> The university's other long-term vision includes developing a 'University Alumni <keyword id="23500009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="angel-network" source="keywords">Angel Network</keyword>' where successful alumni can provide mentorship and financial support to student-led start-ups, offer reverse internships where students hire industry professionals and establish the special Chair for multinational companies, which can promote research at the university in their interest. <br /><br /> The Institutional Development Plan has been tabled for consideration before the Academic Council members, who held a meeting on Thursday.

Delhi University eyes to launch own satellite, restrict fossil fuel vehicles on campus

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) Delhi's air pollution went down drastically on Wednesday as gusty winds and rains helped flush out key pollutants leading the AQI to improve from 'poor' to 'moderate' category. However, this "clean air" days will be shortlived, with pollution set to spike again from Saturday.<br /><br />According to SAFAR estimates, most of the areas in the national capital on Wednesday morning, including Pusa Road, Lodhi Road, IIT-Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport (Terminal-3) and Ayanagar recorded air quality in the 'poor' category with an AQI of 111, 121, 135, 139, 173 and 156 respectively. <br /><br />The Delhi University area recorded the cleanest air with an AQI of 97.<br /><br />Under the influence of Western Disturbance (WD) which prevailed on Tuesday, Delhiites experienced some resapite on Wednesday. There was comparatively better breathable air than what had been consistently over the past week.<br /><br />The Air Quality Index (AQI) touched 132, according to the latest estimates updated by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR). PM10 has now become the lead pollutant instead of PM2.5.<br /><br />The environment watcher bodies though said the significant improvement in Delhi air quality would be short-lived. <br /><br />The Ministry of Earth Sciences officials predicted the AQI likely to deteriorate soon.<br /><br />"The AQI is forecast to be in moderate to the Poor category for tomorrow. <br /><br />"AQI is forecast to further deteriorate to the higher end of the Poor to the lower end of the Very Poor category on November 20, 21, as the conductive meteorological environment created after rainfall is slowly retreating."<br /><br />As per the ministry, one of the reasons behind the deterioration could be increased share of stubble burning in the atmosphere. <br /><br />"Stubble burning share in PM2.5 in Delhi's air is likely to increase marginally and estimated as 8 per cent. The AQI is likely to marginally deteriorate and forecasted to be in moderate to the Poor category for tomorrow," it said.<br /><br />"Surface winds are calm and boundary layer wind direction is North-Westerly (favourable for intrusion). Effective Stubble fire counts with sufficient potential estimated from SAFAR-multi-satellite products are marginally increased and are around 427," it added.<br /><br />The ministry has also forecast that the air quality of Pune is in the Satisfactory category but likely to marginally deteriorate and stay in the Satisfactory to Moderate for the next three days. Chennai, <keyword id="116095" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> Chairman K Sivan on Saturday said the space agency was developing '<keyword id="9090354" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-propulsion">green propulsion</keyword>' for its <keyword id="10498627" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambitious-human-space-flight-mission">ambitious human space flight mission</keyword>, 'Gaganyaan'. He also said it may be adopted for use in every stage of a rocket. He was speaking at the 16th convocation of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, near here. <br /><br />Sivan, also the Secretary, <keyword id="245720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Space">Department of Space</keyword>, advised the new graduates to take up 'calculated risk' in their life as it may safeguard them from 'absolute failure'. "As India continues to focus on economic growth, it needs to ensure that environmental damage is limited by adopting green technologies. <br /><br />ISRO has made space grade lithium-ion batteries and this technology is useful for mass adoption of electric vehicle", he noted. <br /><br />On the green propellant, Sivan said, "Even in the rocket propulsion, ISRO is developing green propulsion for its human space flight mission. <br /><br />In future, all the propulsion stages may adopt green propulsion," he said. <br /><br />According to ISRO, <keyword id="622933" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Polar-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">polar satellite launch vehicle</keyword> (PSLV) a trusted workhorse of the space scientists -- is a four stage rocket filled with fuel which pushes the rocket to ensure that the satellite it carries is placed in the intended orbit. <br /><br />GSLV or a geo-stationery launch vehicle (GSLV) is a three stage rocket with a cryogenic upper stage. <br /><br />The Bengaluru-headquartered space agency had planned to launch its maiden human space flight mission 'Gaganyaan' by December 2021. <br /><br />But early this month, ISRO indicated that it is likely to be delayed by one year due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing students through virtual platform, the ISRO chief encouraged them to take up calculated risk as it would safeguard them from 'absolute failure.' "You may fail, but each failure would provide a valuable lesson. <br /><br />I can say with great confidence that India's space programme has been built on spectacular failures and each failure has resulted in improvements in our system", he said. Asking the students to innovate, Sivan said, innovation was not just having great idea on paper. <br /><br />"Innovation comes with a high risk of failure. You may be called crazy. Initial outcome of innovation may be imperfect. <br /><br />You must realize that you are not failing means you are not trying anything hard", he said. Referring to the space sector reforms announced by the Centre in June, he said, "the government has already announced space sector reforms for greater participation of non- governmental entities in space activity". <br /><br />"Our next PSLV (polar satellite launch vehicle) launch will have satellite from start-up agencies which will be the first product of this reform." he said. On the SRM Satellite 'SRMSAT' launched by ISRO in 2011, he said it was in 'healthy condition' and urged the university to come forward and make use of the space sector reform as announced by <keyword id="1576501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Government-of-India">the government of India</keyword>. "ISRO is very much open to you all. I request SRM to come forward with their innovative idea of making space activities as required by the Government of India. I am sure that SRM will do this work", he said. ISRO developing green propulsion for human space mission 'Gaganyaan', says Chairman K Sivan

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/hurricane-irma-2017">Hurricane Irma</a>, the most <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-irma-strength-category-forecast-updates-2017-9">powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history</a>, slammed&#xa0;several Caribbean islands&#xa0;with Category 5 storm winds early Wednesday, leaving a path of destruction that we're just beginning to to be able to see.</p><p>So far, Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Martin, and St. Barts have all taken direct hits from the storm.</p><p>Around 1:47 a.m. ET Wednesday, Irma first made landfall in Barbuda, a flat island with a population of approximately 1,600. Local weather stations&#xa0;captured wind gusts of 155 mph before going silent, <a href="https://twitter.com/mikeseidel/status/905433292756963328">indicating the instruments had been blown away</a> - Irma's sustained winds have been reported at 185 mph, with gusts above 215 mph.</p><p>Phones lines were down and major damage has been reported. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-powerful-hurricane-irma-hits-first-caribbean-islands-2017-9">According to the Associated Press</a>, winds tore the roof off the island's police station.</p><p>By around 8 a.m. ET or shortly after, the eyewall of the storm reached Anguilla, St. Martin, and St. Barts, causing widespread severe damage, as photos and videos from those islands and others nearby&#xa0;show.</p><p>Hurricane Irma is currently headed towards Puerto Rico, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-irma-strength-category-forecast-updates-2017-9">according to the latest update</a> from the National Hurricane Center. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container full"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NASA</span></p></div><p></p></div>In 2012, NASA rang in the New Year with a fresh mission - sending the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-grail-mission-moon-2012-1#comments">Gravity Recovery</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-grail-mission-moon-2012-1">And Interior Laboratory</a>, also known as GRAIL, spacecraft to the moon.</p>
<p>As the first endeavor intended to study lunar gravity, its findings would help scientists better understand how rocky planets, like Earth, formed. That's especially true since many theories suggest the moon was created when a cosmic collison lopped off a portion of the Earth. And they're both made of the same rocky materials.</p>
<p>Since then, GRAIL has brought back some significant - and colorful - information. New findings are still being published, including recent details about the moon's topography published in the May 2014 issue of <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-8007">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.</p>

<h3>The Mission</h3>
<p>Twin spacecraft, named Ebb and Flow - about the size of washing machines - chased each other around the moon for three months, from March to May 2012. Because different geographical formations, like mountains and valleys, exert stronger or weaker gravitational pulls, their distance apart varied as they traveled.</p>
<p>For example, if the first craft flew over a mountain - which has more gravitational pull because it has more mass - the first satellite would speed up, as shown (in exaggerated form) in the GIF to the left.</p>
<p>For a year after, data on the moon's composition and gravity was collected from GRAIL. By analyzing the two crafts' distance apart, scientists could determine the moon's gravity field, as well the topography and the make up of the rocks under the surface. In this way, GRAIL was vital to understanding how rocky plants, like Earth, Venus, Mercury, and Mars, formed.</p>
<p>And when Ebb and Flow had fulfilled their duties, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/grail-crash-into-moon-on-monday-2012-12">NASA crashed them</a> into a rocky hillside on the moon. These "psychedelic" maps and an ashy crater are all that remain.</p>
<h3>The Findings</h3>
<p>NASA's <a href="http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=4175">Scientific Visualization Studio</a> published the first map created using GRAIL's data, shown below, in December 2012. The intense coloring, present in most gravity maps, indicates variations in gravitational pull across the moon's surface.</p>
<p>Red marks areas of high gravity, while dark blue shows the lowest pull, measured in Radial Gravity Anomalies (mGALS).<div class="KonaFilter image-container full"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.afropunk.com/video/erykah-badu-crashes-pix11-live-news-report">NASA</a></span></p></div><p></p></div>Published in three papers in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a> in 2012, the detailed data reveals many never-before-seen features of the moon, such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/highest-resolution-map-of-the-moons-gravity-field-2012-12">tectonic structures and even dead volcanoes</a>. The data also helped determine the moon's crust is much thinner than previously imagined - between 21 and 27 miles thick, making it similar to Earth.</p>
<p>"This supports models where the moon is derived from Earth materials that were ejected during a giant impact event early in solar system history," said <a href="http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/grail/newsdisplay.cfm?Subsite_News_ID=31468&amp;SiteID=2">Mark Wieczorek</a>, GRAIL co-investigator at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris.</p>
<p>The map below also shows the moon's gravity field but using a different calculation method. If the moon were a perfectly smooth sphere of uniform density, like a pool ball, its gravity map would show uniform color. But like any terrestrial body, the moon's surface has craters and mountains as well as variations under the surface that change its gravitational pull.</p>
<p>This creates a Bouguer gravity map, seen below, which subtracts the effect of the bumpy surface to show the lumpiness of the moon's gravity underneath the surface, essentially, the gravity field created by the moon's interior.</p>

It's measured in kilometers, instead of mGALS. Red marks the tallest formations, while blue shows the lowest. <div class="KonaFilter image-container full"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=4014">NASA</a></span></p></div><p></p></div>Finally, crustal thickness, shown below, can be inferred from the Bouguer map. <p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Recently, NASA was able to increase the detail presents in these finding by combining the two measurements.</span></p>
<p>In the May 2014 issue of <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-8007">Geophysical Research Letters</a>, a publication of the American Geophysical Union, the Scientific Visualization Studio created the image below to correlate topographical formations with the gravity field, which previous maps had separated. It shows the moon's surface in much greater detail than previous versions.</p>
<p>The paper adds more information to what we already know about the Moon's interior and its thermal history.</p>
