From fires and injuries to life-threatening confrontations, the festival celebrations were marred by numerous incidents, causing authorities to respond swiftly. <h2>Hyderabad: <keyword id="23276717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eye-injuries" source="keywords">Eye injuries</keyword> surge</h2>In Hyderabad, the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital reported a significant rise in firecracker-related eye injuries, with 48 patients seeking treatment for burns and eye damage. Hospital Superintendent Modini Pandharpurkar noted, "Of the 48, eight were admitted to the hospital, including three children and five adults." Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening. Nevertheless, with the ongoing celebrations, the hospital anticipates a higher number of patients in the coming days. She further urged parents to supervise children during firecracker use and cautioned against risky behavior such as holding crackers while lighting them. <h2>Firecracker dispute in Mumbai</h2>In Mumbai, a Diwali celebration escalated into a fatal altercation when a dispute broke out over the location for bursting firecrackers. Vivek Gupta, a 20-year-old resident of Jai Maharashtra Nagar in Antop Hill, lost his life in the confrontation. The incident began when a passerby, Kartik R Mohan Devendra, asked the group celebrating in a narrow lane to move to a safer location. Following a heated exchange, Devendra and his associates returned to the scene, leading to a violent clash during which Gupta was stabbed fatally. The police have since arrested five individuals and are actively searching for other suspects involved. <h2>Delhi: Record-breaking fire calls and rampant pollution</h2>The <keyword id="19959715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-fire-services" source="keywords">Delhi Fire Services</keyword> (DFS) experienced a record surge in fire-related emergencies, receiving 318 calls within a 24-hour span, marking the highest number in 13 years. “The figure marks the highest number of Diwali-related fire and emergency incidents in the past 13 years,” stated DFS Chief Atul Garg. Despite enhanced preparedness and additional fire units deployed across the city, the overwhelming number of incidents underscored the persistent dangers posed by firecrackers. The DFS reported that most calls came between 5 PM on October 31 and 5 AM on November 1. The calls included incidents of minor burns and fires, with one major accident involving a fire onboard a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus due to an ignited stash of crackers carried by a passenger. Additionally, the relentless firecracker use contributed to a drastic decline in Delhi's air quality. The city's air quality index (AQI) hit 'very poor' levels, exacerbating health risks for residents despite the fifth consecutive year of a government-imposed ban on firecrackers. <h2>Kanpur: Tragic loss in house fire</h2>In a tragic incident in Kanpur, prominent businessman Sanjay Shyam Dasani, his wife Kanika, and their domestic helper Chhavi Chauhan perished in a house fire believed to have started from a 'diya' left unattended after Diwali prayers. The fire rapidly engulfed their home, and the couple, unable to unlock their electronically secured bedroom door in time, succumbed to suffocation. The incident has left the local community in shock, highlighting the need for heightened safety precautions during the festival. <h2>Odisha: Firecracker mishaps result in casualties and injuries</h2>In Odisha, the festive celebrations took a deadly turn as two young boys lost their lives in a firecracker-related blast in Puri, while over 50 people suffered injuries in separate incidents across the state. One tragic accident involved the destruction of 25 shops in a Bhubaneswar market, where property worth lakhs was reduced to ashes. Hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack also reported multiple admissions of burn victims, many of whom were children. Puri Superintendent of Police Vinit Agarwal emphasised that strict measures would be taken against individuals involved in illegal firecracker manufacturing. <h2>Kolkata: Smog and noise pollution dampen festivities</h2>In Kolkata, the morning after Diwali brought a sharp decline in air quality as pollution levels soared across the city. Despite efforts by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) to curb the use of harmful firecrackers, many residents disregarded guidelines, leading to dangerously high levels of PM 2.5. The AQI, which hovered around 250 in several areas during the night, remained in the ‘poor’ category the next morning. Environmentalist Somendra Mohan Ghosh criticised the public's disregard for sound and air pollution norms, stating, “Sound crackers were burst rampantly from 9PM till after 1AM across several areas." Officials across the country have voiced concerns and urged citizens to prioritise safety over enthusiasm. Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, mobilised enforcement teams to ensure compliance with the firecracker ban, while activists like Somendra Ghosh stressed the importance of public responsibility in maintaining environmental and community safety. Diwali celebrations overshadowed by eye injuries, fatal incidents and record number of fire hazards across India

This was the highest-ever number of calls it has ever received on Diwali during the past decade. Speaking to ANI, Delhi Fire Services Director Atul Garg said that between midnight and 6 am, approximately 158 fire-related incident cases were reported. "There were no major calls, but we received many. From 5 pm yesterday until midnight, around 192 calls were logged, and between midnight and 6 am, around 158 more were reported. From 5 PM to 5 AM, in just 12 hours, the 300 mark was crossed," Atul Garg said. The maximum calls (84) were logged an hour before midnight i.e. between 11 pm and 11:59 pm. This is a significant spike from the 208 calls DFS received in 2023 and the 201 calls it had reported in 2022 He further said that there was no major fire as they had increased the fire force this year for Diwali. "There were minor fire incidents, including one in Vikaspuri where two people became unconscious. Another incident was reported in Mangolpuri, where a woman and two children were injured. There was no major fire because we had increased the fire force this time. There were a lot of calls, but there were no life-threatening cases," DFS Director Atul Garg said. "There was a call from the Najafgarh area at around 6:30 PM that a man was carrying potash in a DTC bus, in which a blast took place. Potash is mainly used in firecracker manufacturing and is highly inflammable. Two people were injured. Two fire tenders were sent to the spot," he explained. Earlier, a passenger and one co-passenger sustained burn injuries after crackers caught fire in a DTC bus on Thursday evening, Delhi police said. <h2>Delhi's AQI jumps to 362 </h2>Delhi woke up to elevated <keyword id="20450441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pollution-levels" source="keywords">pollution levels</keyword> and a smoky haze on Friday, a day after Diwali, as the city's AQI jumped to 362, largely due to residents blatantly flouting firecracker bans the night before. Most areas in the capital recorded an <keyword id="19920379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-quality-index" source="keywords">Air Quality Index</keyword> (AQI) over 350, raising <keyword id="20497171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-concerns" source="keywords">health concerns</keyword> for residents. Notably, this year saw the city hit its worst <keyword id="23758147" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali-AQI" source="keywords">Diwali AQI</keyword>, compared to AQIs seen on Diwali nights over the last 3 years. As per <keyword id="20126873" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAFAR" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SAFAR" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SAFAR">SAFAR</keyword> (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), as of 9:50 am, AQI at Anand Vihar was at 393, teetering on the edge of severe (AQI between 401-500). Closer to this mark were Bawana and Burari, where AQIs were recorded at 398 and 391, respectively. As of 10 am today, AQI in Noida stood at 192, which is classified as poor air quality. AQI in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad stood at 318, i.e., in the very poor category, showed data from CPCB. Notably, an AQI of 0-50 is seen as good and has minimal health impacts. Between 51 and 100, AQI becomes satisfactory, causing minor breathing discomfort. As AQI inches up between 101 and 200, it may cause moderate discomfort, especially to those who suffer from asthma, lung, or heart-related diseases. As AQI pushes up towards 201 and less than 300, the AQI is classified as poor. Between 301 and 400, AQI is categorized as very poor and can cause respiratory illnesses upon prolonged exposure. Over 400 (i.e. 401-500), the AQI is considered severe, where it impacts even healthy people and causes significant breathing troubles. Of late, doctors have reported a 35-40% spike in <keyword id="20655119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="respiratory-issues" source="keywords">respiratory issues</keyword> among Delhi's elderly. October 2024 also becamethe warmest October after 1951 in terms of both Maximum and Minimum temperatures in Safdarjung, New Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. According to the IMD, this month has recorded an average maximum temperature of 35.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 21.2 degrees Celsius over Safdarjung respectively. In 1907, the maximum temperature was 35.5 degrees Celsius, in 1930 maximum temperature was 35.0 degrees Celsius, in 1938 it recorded 35.0 degrees Celsius, in 1941 it recorded 35.8 degrees Celsius, in 1951 it recorded 36.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

DTC is the first state bus network that has implemented this solution for riders across the region. The service is available in both English and Hindi, commuters can access this service on WhatsApp by sending 'Hi' to +91 8744073223 or by scanning the QR code. Currently, the WhatsApp chatbot allows commuters traveling on DTC and DIMTS routes to book single journey QR tickets. For riders commuting frequently on the same route, the chatbot will offer a quick purchase feature, further reducing the time spent selecting the destination and starting point in the chatbot. Through the WhatsApp-based <keyword id="1422476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticketing-system" source="Orion">ticketing system</keyword>, a rider per transaction can directly purchase a maximum of six tickets using their preferred UPI payment option within the chat window. WhatsApp-based ticketing system now available for DTC commuters across Delhi-NCR

At a time when the national capital needs more public transport alternatives with the odd-even days all ready to set in, at least 400 to 500 buses lie unutilised at depots at any given point owing to reasons like poor maintenance and missed trips. 
 According to an analysis by <keyword id="6357976" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-Science-and-Environment">Centre for Science and Environment</keyword> (CSE), the number of passengers availing the <keyword id="780216" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="DTC-bus-service">DTC bus service</keyword> is stagnating. If DTC were to utilise its entire fleet, complete all scheduled trips and eliminate missed trips, it can carry at least 25 lakh additional passengers daily. 
 
"The odd-even formula is an opportunity to put in place a plan to improve public transport services to meet the additional commuting demand from halving of personal cars on roads, which can be sustained and carried forward even after the programme is over," says Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executive director, CSE. 
 
CSE's fleet utilisation of 83.99% during 2014-15 "is dismal and much worse than what other state transport undertakings in different cities have achieved - 95% in Bangalore and Chandigarh", says CSE. 
 
Only 79.65% of the daily trips are completed in Delhi against 85.76% in 2011-12. Worse, 3.3 lakh less passengers per day are using the service compared to 2012-13.

As odd-even days kick in, nearly 500 buses idle at depots

New Delhi, Apr 11 () The Centre is likely to categorise the country into red, orange and green zones depending on the number of COVID-19 cases during the proposed extended period of lockdown and might allow limited services to function in the safe zones.Officials privy to the discussions during the four-hour-long conference with chief ministers, convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that schools and colleges would remain shut but some small scale industries and liquor shops may be allowed to function.There was near unanimity in extending the ongoing 21-day lockdown, which is till April 30, and the central government is likely to categorise the country into three zones -- red, orange and green -- depending on the number of COVID-19 cases, an official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told .There will be no activity in the red zones -- the districts where sizeable number of cases were detected or areas which were declared hotspots.In the orange zones -- where only a few cases were found in the past with no increase in the number of positive cases -- minimum activities like opening of limited public transport, harvesting of farm products will be allowed.Green zones will be in the districts where there is no COVID-19 case.The chief ministers were against large scale inter-state movement of people, sources said.Liquor shops are likely to be allowed to open as many chief ministers strongly pitched for it arguing that it is a major revenue generating way for the states, the sources said, adding restaurants and malls won't open.However, some MSME industries falling under the green zone -- in the districts where there is no COVID-19 case -- will be allowed to function with in-house lodging facilities for employees with proper maintenance of social distance.Agricultural activities are also set to be allowed in green and orange zones with strict maintenance of social distance.Limited domestic air and train services may be allowed in select sectors with 30 per cent or less passengers while limited metro services may also be started in cities like Delhi with 30 per cent passengers.Currently, in major cities like Delhi, 30 per cent of DTC and cluster bus services are operational for those working in essential services.The city public transport services will be enhanced from minimum to optimal, another sources said.The chief ministers are strongly opposed to any mass scale movements of people between states saying they don't have the capacity to put thousands of people in quarantine together, the sources said.After the marathon meeting, the prime minister is believed to have directed top officials to work out on the guidelines -- on the restrictions and exemptions -- which may be announced either on Sunday or Monday. Red, orange, green zones may come up during extended lockdown

New Delhi, May 19 () Life was limping back to normalcy in most parts of Delhi with easing of the coronavirus-triggered restrictions after nearly two months on Tuesday, as there was significant vehicular movement and resumption of economic activities in the city. Several markets in the national capital were buzzing with activity, but confusion prevailed over opening up of shops due to odd-even formula laid down by the Delhi government. All kinds of shops have been allowed to open. Delhi also witnessed 60 per cent spike in vehicle volume from the usual 12,000 -15,000 during the earlier phases of the lockdown, a senior traffic official said. Although metro services are yet to restart operations, public transport resumed with 2,000 buses as well as auto-rickshaws and taxis plying on the road, with a restricted number of passengers as per social distancing norms. The industries too resumed operations, but many complained of shortage of labour and disruption of the supply chain. The coronavirus death toll in Delhi has climbed to 166, while 500 fresh cases of COVID-19 infection reported on Tuesday, the highest single-day spike here, took the total in the city to 10,554, authorities said. The previous highest spike of 472 fresh cases was recorded on May 14. Delhi has been under lockdown since March 23, but the curbs were in place before that. On Monday, the Delhi government announced significant opening of economic activities in the city, including resuming of DTC operations. While popular markets like Connaught Place and Khan Market bore a deserted look, traders in markets like Tilak Nagar, Karol Bagh and Sarojini Nagar were seen cleaning their shops. Connaught Place, which is the commercial hub in central Delhi, saw traders marking circles to ensure that visitors can ensure social distancing. At Karol Bagh in central Delhi, Gaffar mobile market started functioning on an odd-even basis. Odd numbered shops remained open and many shopkeepers were busy setting their shop in order. Hawkers who do repair works and odd jobs like replacing tempered glass on mobiles in the market were not to be seen. However, a large number of people had gathered in the market to get repair work done. Market association and representatives police kept urging people to ensure social distancing. In its guidelines issued on Monday, the Delhi government permitted opening of markets on an odd-even basis. However, on ground there was disappointment as well as confusion over the opening of shops on an odd-even basis. In a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lt Governor Anil Baijal, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) urged them to reconsider the odd-even formula for opening of shops, observing that only five lakh shops could open in the city owing to the arrangement. Khan Market traders said the odd-even rule cannot be effectively implemented in the market and they are figuring out the modalities as some stores opened in the posh market. "We are a different market. Our shops are not even numbered in a way that we can implement the odd-even formula. And are the visitors going to visit the stores keeping the shop number and odd and even date in mind? There was absolutely nil business today. "At least retail markets like ours, which are set up in a way that social distancing measures can easily be implemented, should be allowed to open completely," Sanjeev Mehra, President, Khan Market Traders Association said. The shopkeepers also complained that customer inflow was minimal. Pravin Verma of Verma Jewellers at the Laxmi Nagar market, said, "Everybody is concerned about customers. The situation is bad. It was not good earlier as well but coronavirus and lockdown have hit everybody hard and people are buying only essential items these days. Jewellery would be the last item on their mind." After a lull of over two months, there were traffic snarls on the roads. According to traffic officials, apart from border areas, jams were also witnessed at ITO, Yamuna Bridge and Sarai Kale Khan. Snarls were also reported at Barapulla flyover. The strict checking by the Uttar Pradesh police at the border was cited as a major reason for heavy traffic at Noida-DND flyover and other bordering areas. A senior traffic police official said heavy traffic was reported at the DND flyover as several vehicles queued up to enter Noida. Taking to Twitter, Delhi Traffic Police alerted commuters travelling to Noida to plan their trip only if their vehicles have movement passes issued by authorities concerned. The situation was no different even on the Delhi-Gurgaon border. Transport minister Kailash Gahlot said the number of buses will increase in the days to come when more and more drivers, who reside in the neighbouring states, report for work. The department is taking all the necessary precautions with resumption of public transport and urged people to wear masks and ensure social distancing, he said. "Thermal scanning has been started at some terminals and bus stands. We will ensure it at all the busy bus stands. The government under leadership of Arvind Kejriwal is taking all the necessary steps," he tweeted. Gahlot said more than 2,000 buses were on the roads on Tuesday. Additionally, around 1,400 buses were kept at the disposal of Revenue and Police departments for movement of migrants to railway station and for law and order duties respectively, he said. Life limps back to normalcy amid COVID-19 threat as economic activities resume in Delhi

New Delhi, May 15 () The coronavirus cases neared the 8,000 mark in Delhi on Wednesday, while the city government revised the death toll to 106, following an audit prompted by a controversy over mismatch of figures given by it and hospitals. The 20 deaths which have been added took place in April and May, the authorities said, days after the Delhi government was accused of under-reporting the fatalities but it had sought to blame the hospitals claiming they were not providing the death reports in a timely manner. Notwithstanding the constant surge in cases, a large number of people, who responded to a call by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to give their suggestions on the situation post-May 17 when the third phase of the lockdown will end, favoured allowing more economic activities in Delhi, sources said. The total number of coronavirus cases in Delhi climbed to 7,998 after 359 fresh cases were reported, a bulletin by the Health Department said. It said the 20 deaths reported took place in April and May as per case sheets received from hospitals and audited by the COVID-19 death committee. After the controversy, the Delhi government had issued standard operating procedure (SOP) for hospitals and other health facilities in the city on reporting fatalities due to coronavirus. Of the deceased patients, 58 were aged 60 and above, accounting for over 54 per cent of the fatalities here. Twenty-eight of them were aged between 50-59 years and 20 were less than 50 years, the bulletin said. Kejriwal had on Tuesday sought views from Delhiites on how to ease curbs after May 17, but said the lockdown cannot be completely lifted in view of the rising number of cases. In response, more than 4.76 lakh WhatsApp messages, 39,000 calls and 10,700 emails were received till 5 Pm Wednesday, the Chief Minister's Office said. A team has been formed to analyse these messages, sources said. They added that most people favoured allowing more economic activities in the national capital post May 17. However, the decision will be in accordance with the Centre's guidelines, the sources noted. The responses have been received under various categories such as industrial and MSME operations, transportation, education, and day-to-day activities of the people such as commercial and non-commercial activities, a statement said. Delhi has been under the lockdown since March 23. The transport department is also holding discussions to develop a protocol for safe public transport amid COVID-19 pandemic. A decision on resumption of full-fledged services will depend on Centre's guidelines, said a senior government functionary. Meanwhile, three special Shramik trains carrying migrant workers left the national capital for Bhagalpur, Barauni and Darbhanga in Bihar. Delhi's Labour Minister Gopal Rai said the AAP government will pay fares for all migrant workers. Separately, four trains from Mumbai, Ahemdabad, Patna and Howrah brought people stranded in different parts of the country to the national capital. But many passengers carrying heavy luggage stood clueless outside the railway station for hours as there was no bus, cab or any other transport option available for onward journeys. "We can give you Rs 6,000 maximum if you take us to Roorkee (in Uttarakhand, a distance of about 200 km)," a man said to a driver who reached the station to pick up a family which had already booked his taxi. Another man was seen asking a rickshaw-puller to take him to Anand Vihar. Ratnakar, a resident of Uttam Nagar, who had gone to his village in Bihar's Begusarai district, said he had no idea about suspension of public transport in Delhi. His father, who is in his 60s, said if they start walking, they would reach home by evening. "Why have they started running trains when there is no bus or metro available? We had no clue that there will be no public transport whatsoever in Delhi," he said. In the evening, the Delhi Police said the stranded passengers can now avail DTC buses for their onward journey from the station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Harendra K Singh said they made elaborate arrangements in close coordination with railway authorities to ensure passengers experience no inconvenience while travelling, but at the same time follow the guidelines issued to contain the spread of coronavirus. "For the passengers boarding trains, a dedicated corridor was made on the Paharganj side where people queued up, all wearing masks and maintaining social distance. After thermal scanning, they boarded the trains. Sanitiser dispensers were placed at prominent places for the passengers," Singh said. After eight persons working in the New Delhi district magistrate's office were found coronavirus positive, the premises were sealed, officials said. Hardly five kilometres away, Rail Bhavan, the headquarters of the Indian Railways, was also shut after an RPF staffer tested positive. With more than 100 of its personnel testing positive for COVID-19 so far, the Delhi Police said some hospitals have reserved beds for it for any emergency admissions as many in the force are deployed at "sensitive" locations like containment zones and quarantine centres. Delhi govt revises coronavirus death toll to 106 after controversy; Cases near 8,000

	The sex ratio has improved from 821 in 2001 to 868 in 2011. The density of population has increased from 9,340 persons per square km in 2001 to 11,297 persons per sq km in 2011. 
 

	According to the survey, the literacy rate has increased from 81.67 per cent in 2001 to 86.34 per cent in 2011. The urban population of the national capital increased from 93.18 per cent in 2001 to 97.50 per cent in 2011. 

	Per capita income of India’s national capital is almost three times its value for the country, which stands at Rs. 87,748. Its per capita income during financial year 2014-15 has increased to Rs 2.41 lakh from Rs 2.12 lakh in the previous fiscal, a rise of nearly 13.50 per cent over the period. 
 

	As per the survey, the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices during 2014-15 has increased to over Rs 4.51 lakh crore, a growth of 15.35 per cent over the previous year. 
 

	At constant prices, the growth of the Gross State Domestic Product for 2014-15 is 8.2 per cent as compared to 7.4 per cent recorded at national level. 
 As per the survey, the fiscal deficit of <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword> was Rs 2,21.25 crore in 2014-15, which is 0.049 per cent of GSDP, as compared to estimated fiscal deficit of 2.35 per cent of all states during the same year. 

	The expenditure incurred on social service sectors in Delhi increased from 48.79 per cent in 10th Five Year Plan to 57.12 per cent in the 11th Five Year Plan and 65.75 per cent for the first three years of the 12th Five Year Plan. 
 

	Tax collection of Delhi government registered a growth of 2.64 per cent in 2014-15 as compared to the growth of 10.60 per cent in 2013-14, it said. 
 

	Delhi has maintained its consistent revenue surplus which was Rs 6,079.53 crore in 2014-15 as compared to Rs 5,615.37 crore in 2013-14. 
 

	As per Census 2011, about 97.50 per cent of the population lived in urban area. Rural area of Delhi reduced from 558.32 sqm in 2001 to 369.35 sqm in 2011. The number of villages has declined from 165 in 2001 to 112 in 2011, as per the survey. 
 

	The decennial population growth of Delhi during 2001-2011 was recorded as 20.96 per cent as compared to around 50 per cent in each decade between 1961 and 1991 and 47 per cent between 1991 and 2001. The population of Delhi as on March 2011 was recorded at 167.53 lakh. 
 
 

	About greenery, the survey said, tree cover area in 2013 was 297.81 sq km, which is 20.08 per cent of the total area of Delhi. 
 

	The total cropped area reduced from 52,816 hectares in 2000-01 to 34,312 hectares in 2014-15. 
 

	The number of agricultural operational holdings has reduced from 25311 in 2005-06 to 20497 in 2010-11, it said. 
 

	The main reasons behind such reduction are fast urbanisation and shift in occupational pattern especially during the last two decades. 
 

	On power sector, it said the electricity supply in Delhi increased from 23,537 million units in 2005-06 to 37,484 million units in 2014-15. The total number of electricity consumer in Delhi is 54.05 lakh in 2014-15 with power consumption recording an annual growth of 3.63 per cent.
 

	Peak demand increased from 3,626 MW in 2005-06 to 5,925 MW in 2014-15. AT&amp;C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses were brought down from 52 per cent in the pre-reform era to 12.83 per cent in 2014-15.

	New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area will be developed as a 'Solar City' by installing SPV panels on rooftops of government buildings, metro stations, bus stops, among other places.

	As per 2011 Census, 81 per cent of total households were having piped water supply system. 
 

	The total number of water connections provided by Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has increased from 17.85 lakhs in 2009-10 to 20.65 lakhs in 2013-14. 
 

	The survey said that about 142 MGD of treated waste water is being utilised for cooling of power plants, horticulture, parks, irrigation as well as crops irrigation. 
 

	According to the report, 35.98 per cent of total population of Delhi is residing in urban areas. There is a near universal electrification and 99 per cent of the households have access to sanitation facilities. 
 

	Close to 31.76 lakh houses (77.6 per cent) were being used exclusively for residential purposes in 2011. The DUSIB has setup 271 night-shelters for the shelter-less population. 
 

	In the education sector, Delhi has a variety of quality schools, colleges and universities as well as centres for research and higher education with male and female literacy rate of 91.03 per cent and 80.93 per cent respectively. 
 

	As per the survey, the literacy rate of Delhi is at around 86 per cent, which is much higher than the all India level of 74 per cent as per the 2011 Census. 
 

	Delhi government has invested massively in education sector for improving the education as around 20 per cent of the total budget of 2014-15 was allocated to the education sector. 
 

	The total number of schools increased from 5043 in 2009-10 to 5798 in 2014-15. Even the number of students enrolled in schools increased from 37.38 lakh in 2009-10 to 44.13 lakh in 2014-15. 
 

	About 25,000 students got admitted under EWS quota in 1200 recognised private unaided.
 
 It is said the number of students in ITIs and Polytechnics increased from 22,070 in 2009-10 to 28628 in 2013-14, with a growth of 30 per cent in five years. More than 16000 trainees were trained under <keyword id="985247" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skill-Development-Mission">Skill Development Mission</keyword> during 2014-15. 

	As per economic survey, Delhi has a wide network of health sector infrastructure comprising 95 hospitals, 1,389 dispensaries, 267 maternity homes, 973 polyclinics and 16 medical colleges. 
 

	It is said total number of hospital beds increased from 41,706 in 2010 to 48,096 in 2014 simultaneously bed population ratio increased from 2.54 to 2.71 in the same period. 
 

	About 82 per cent of the total births were institutional in 2013. 
 

	The life expectancy in Delhi is of 72 years four years more than the national average of 68. 
 

	In social security and welfare sector around 95 Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) with a network of 10,897 Anganwadi Centers took care of 14.58 lakh pregnant and lactating women and children up to the age of 6 years. 
 

	About 3.32 lakh senior citizens were provided monthly old age pension during 2014-15. 
 

	Around 7.5 lakh girls registered under Ladli Yojana and 84,305 girls received the final maturity value upto March 2015. 
 

	The survey said that around 3400 households were provided financial support of Rs 10,000 under National Family Benefit Scheme during the year 2014-15. 
 

	About 27,000 students of SC/ST/OBC/Minority category studying in recognized unaided public schools got reimbursement of tuition fee. 
 

	Delhi is one of pioneer state in implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013 with effect from September 1, 2013. It issued 17.68 lakh National Food Security Smart Cards have been issued to eligible households and all the digital Food Security Cards are Aadhar enabled. 
 

	The survey said the number of persons below Poverty Line in Delhi has reduced from 23.3 lakhs (14.2 per cent) in 2009-10 to 16.96 lakhs (9.91 per cent) in 2011-12.
