Picture this. You are in the middle of an intense boss fight. Arrows flying from all directions. Beastly creatures are after you and in the midst of it all you spot a large dragon who lands right in the middle of action. You quickly change your weapon choice and instruct your companions to fight the dragon with you. However, just before you could attack, you run into a system error and have to restart the game all over again. Trust me, we have all been there. But this wasn’t the case with the newly-launched Dragon Age: The Veilguard.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="3" msid="116133701" hostid="261" sizebytes="1807404"></div><br />This is a game that pushes both graphical fidelity and hardware performance, delivering a breathtaking journey through a richly detailed fantasy world. With my PC armed with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800 X3D processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super GPU, 32 GB DDR5 RAM, I was able to get a great experience with this game. Let us take a look at how the game performed with different settings. <br /><br /><h2>The sweet spot<br /></h2><br />Starting with DLSS set to Balanced mode, I tested the game at a resolution of 2560x1440 with ultra graphics and selective <keyword id="20976394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ray-tracing" source="keywords">ray tracing</keyword>. Without frame generation, the gameplay clocked in at 90 FPS, offering smooth visuals. Enabling frame generation and turning off V-Sync cranked the frame rate up to 140 FPS, significantly enhancing responsiveness during combat and exploration.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="6" msid="116133722" hostid="261" sizebytes="1410873"></div><br />Lowering the resolution to 1080p further pushed the performance to 180-190 FPS with frame generation, and 120-110 FPS without it, making the gameplay exceptionally fluid.<br /><br /><h2>Prioritising visual fidelity<br /></h2><br />Switching to Nvidia <keyword id="24385578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DLSS-Quality-mode" source="keywords">DLSS Quality mode</keyword>, which focuses on visual excellence over raw performance, I saw fantastic results. At 1080p resolution with ultra graphics and frame generation off, the game maintained an average of 118 FPS. <br /><br />Returning to 2K resolution with Quality DLSS, Nvidia Reflex set to “On + Boost,” and frame generation enabled, the frame rates ranged between 130-150 FPS. The experience was smooth and visually stunning, with every texture rendered in incredible detail. In some scenarios, frame rates even spiked to 180-200 FPS, peaking at 220 FPS in less graphically intense areas. I spent hours exploring the vast world with this setting, marvelling at various scenes it had to offer. The environment artists have really done a fabulous job and the game looks breathtaking.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="4" msid="116133742" hostid="261" sizebytes="1234786"></div><br />When I switched DLSS to Performance mode at 2K resolution, the game delivered around 160 FPS, offering a good balance of visuals and performance. <br /><br /><h2>Prioritising performance<br /></h2><br />To test the game’s performance, I tweaked around the settings a bit and here is how it went.<br /><br />At 1080p resolution, with Ultra Performance DLSS, frame rates soared to 230-250 FPS, with only a slight reduction in visual quality—barely noticeable unless scrutinised.<br /><br />To explore maximum performance potential, I switched from ultra to high graphics settings with ray tracing off, DLSS set to Ultra Performance, and frame generation enabled. This unleashed astonishing frame rates of 300-350 FPS, showing that at lower graphical presets, the game resulted in almost unbelievable frame rates without a drop. The visual quality was noticeably reduced but the game wasn’t unplayable. You still will get to see some gorgeous scenarios, even with these graphic settings.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="7" msid="116133766" hostid="261" sizebytes="991975"></div><br />Reverting DLSS to Quality mode under these settings still delivered an average of 260 FPS, proving the rig’s capability to handle demanding titles like Dragon Age: The Veilguard with ease.<br /><br /><h2>Ray Tracing: A visual feast</h2>The pinnacle of visual fidelity in the game came with DLSS Quality mode with ultra graphics, ray-traced reflections, and ambient occlusion at 2K. With these settings enabled, I got an average of 110-120.<br /><br />Even during intense battle sequences, frame rates rarely dipped below 100 FPS. The realistic reflections and intricate lighting effects made environments come alive, with highlights like walking through water puddles becoming a jaw-dropping experience.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="5" msid="116133782" hostid="261" sizebytes="1046215"></div><br /><br />Thus, Dragon Age: Veilguard delivered a stellar performance on my custom water-cooled system, thanks to NVIDIA's 4070 Super GPU and DLSS option.  Whether you’re a player who prioritises ultra-smooth gameplay or one who revels in visual splendour, the game offers a wide range of configurations to suit your preferences.<br /><br />With its flexibility in settings, Dragon Age: Veilguard proves to be a masterfully optimised title that caters to both performance enthusiasts and visual connoisseurs. <br /><br />On my rig, the game performed brilliantly, making every battle, exploration, and story moment a seamless experience. Even without ray tracing, the lighting and shadows were handled excellently, offering a visually rich environment without sacrificing too much on performance. <br /><br />For players who prioritise visual fidelity and are willing to accept minor performance dips during peak moments, this setting is a solid choice.<br /><br /><h2>Ray-tracing enabled and its impact<br /></h2><br />To test the boundaries of the laptop’s capabilities, I enabled ray tracing while keeping all other settings the same.<br /><br />This pushed the system's performance, resulting in frame rates that hovered between 50-60 FPS. The addition of ray tracing enhanced the visual effects, adding realistic reflections, shadows, and lighting effects that made the game’s world even more immersive. For those who are more focused on cinematic visuals and are okay with lower frame rates, enabling ray tracing could still be worthwhile. <br /><br />However, given the hit on performance, it might be best reserved for exploring the game world rather than for intense combat scenarios.<br /><br /><h2>Exploring various DLSS modes<br /></h2><br />To find a middle ground between visuals and performance, I experimented with various DLSS quality modes. Setting DLSS to Balanced mode, which uses 55% super-resolution, yielded frame rates in the range of 60-70 FPS. This configuration struck a reasonable balance, offering decent graphics quality while keeping the gameplay smooth enough for most scenarios. However, there were still occasional drops during graphically demanding scenes, which slightly detracted from the overall fluidity.<br /><br />Switching to DLSS Ultra Performance mode, with a super-resolution of 25%, drastically boosted the frame rates to between 100-120 FPS. The gameplay felt exceptionally smooth and responsive, especially during fast-paced combat and exploration. However, this setting comes with a trade-off in visual quality. Textures appeared less detailed, and some of the finer visual elements seemed a bit blurred or less defined. While the difference wasn’t drastically game-breaking, it was noticeable, especially when compared to higher DLSS settings.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="6" msid="113575871" hostid="261"></div><br /><br />After testing various settings, I found that DLSS Performance mode with a super-resolution of 50% offered the best overall experience. This setting provided a stable frame rate range of 90-100 FPS, striking a harmonious balance between high-quality visuals and smooth performance. The game ran very smoothly, with rich details and vibrant effects that fully showcased the capabilities of the Alienware X16 R2. <br /><br />During intense combat scenarios, such as boss fights against formidable foes like the wolf, the game maintained its smooth performance with only minor lag. These brief interruptions were rare and didn’t significantly impact the overall experience. This setting seems to be the sweet spot, delivering excellent visuals without compromising on frame rates, making it ideal for both casual exploration and high-stakes combat.<br /><br /><h2>Sound quality and immersion</h2>Sound design plays a crucial role in enhancing the gaming experience, and Black Myth: WuKong does not disappoint in this regard. The laptop retains its sleek, all-black appearance with a matte finish, prone to smudging. Particularly, the deck area requires frequent wiping, especially if you have sweaty palms. The monotony is broken only by the ROG-branded plate cap in the top-right corner and the dotted pattern on the remaining area behind the display lid.<br /><br />A notable design element is a contrasting effect achieved by the modified hinge rib, which adds visual interest to an otherwise plain top lid. The lid features the backlit ROG logo outlined in white and a thin line that matches the angular aesthetics of the corner plate. To emphasize its gaming credentials, the laptop boasts a glass-like transparent RGB light strip underneath the front deck edge, extending to the sides.<br /><br />While there is a slight flex to the lid when opening the screen, the hinge mechanism holds everything securely without any concerning lateral movements or creaking sounds. The arched hinge provides a tighter and more reassuring experience than the hinge engineering of certain ROG <keyword id="6929785" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zephyrus" source="Orion">Zephyrus</keyword> laptops prone to damage. Overall, the ROG Strix Scar 17 offers a design that may not turn heads but remains visually pleasing with its conservative familiarity.<br /><br />Weighing three kilograms, the laptop is sleek enough to fit into larger laptop bags, making it easy to carry around. While it's great to have two USB Type-A ports, more USB Type-C ports would be highly desirable. The absence of ports on the right side is notable. Placing the charging cable and LAN port on the side would allow for more comfortable configurations, such as when lying down or using a beanbag and a low table. The charging port at the back increases the likelihood of the cable slipping out, although an on-screen alert notifies you when this occurs. Reaching around the back of the device to reconnect the cable can be challenging, especially when the port is not visible. This screen offers a decent viewing experience, delivering high-contrast content with satisfactory colour saturation. The benefits of a pixel-dense, high refresh rate display are immediately noticeable.<br /><br />Although the viewing angles could be better, it is unlikely a major issue since most of your time will be spent looking at the screen head-on, where colour shifts are less noticeable. The IPS screen of the ROG Strix Scar 17 supports G-Sync and provides precise colour control with full coverage of the DCI-P3 and sRGB colour gamuts. Even when used outdoors under daylight, the need to readjust the screen angle is minimal due to the good brightness output, making it suitable for both work and play. However, in such conditions, colours may appear slightly muted. While Asus offers better screens in their Zephyrus lineup of gaming laptops, the ROG Strix Scar 17 panel is still respectable, especially considering the premium price tag of competing machines with similar CPU and GPU configurations.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple" comment="subhead" text="Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple"><span data-til="noop">Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple</span></cmsannotation><br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695728" hostid="261"></div><br />Asus has successfully struck a balance with the keyboard and trackpad on the Scar 17, which remains unchanged in the latest model. The membrane keyboard provides a satisfying typing experience with a slimmed-down number pad and useful function keys, including dedicated volume controls. Typing on the Scar 17 is a delight, and I appreciate Asus's decision to stick with the membrane keyboard rather than opting for ‘mechanical’ alternatives found in machines like the Alienware x17 R2. Additionally, you can customize the keyboard's per-key RGB lighting using Armoury Crate.<br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695746" hostid="261"></div><br />The trackpad is decent, although it's slightly small. It follows the offset placement to the left, a characteristic seen in other Asus laptops, which I'm not fond of. When resting your fingers on the WASD keys, your palm may unintentionally rest on the trackpad's side. However, the trackpad excels at rejecting inputs from your palm. I repeatedly brushed my palm across the entire trackpad surface, yet it didn't register the slightest unintended input until I intentionally used my finger.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Tunning and heating" comment="subhead" text="Tunning and heating"><span data-til="noop">Tunning and heating</span></cmsannotation><br />The pre-installed Armory Crate app is the central hub for all your aesthetic customization and system tuning requirements. Depending on your usage preferences, you can easily switch between silent, performance, and turbo profiles, each offering a pre-configured level of CPU/GPU frequency and variable fan speed to provide the desired power output. After a 40-minute gaming session, with all the ray-tracing and DLSS features in full effect, the laptop deck never becomes uncomfortably hot—a rarity among laptops boasting such high-performance capabilities. However, it's worth noting that the internal CPU temperature did reach the 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius) mark.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Gaming performance" comment="subhead" text="Gaming performance"><span data-til="noop">Gaming performance</span></cmsannotation><br />This laptop boasts a powerful combination of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU and the AMD RyzenTM 9 7945HX Mobile Processor series CPU, delivering exceptional gaming performance. The GPU has advanced features such as RT Cores, Tensor Cores, and streaming multiprocessors, resulting in realistic ray-traced graphics.<br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695808" hostid="261"></div><br />During my testing, I played games like Days Gone, <keyword id="641921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tom-clancy" source="Orion">Tom Clancy</keyword>'s Ghost Recon, GTA 5, and Sniper Elite 4, and the gaming experience was a treat on this laptop. I could play all these games at high settings without any noticeable lag. However, I did experience some disappointment in terms of heating and fan noise. If you want to enjoy the sound while gaming fully, I would recommend using headphones to mitigate the somewhat daunting fan noise.<br /><br />Furthermore, I tested several AAA titles that can achieve a smooth 90 frames per second at ultra settings, and the laptop performed admirably. Undoubtedly, it can handle demanding games like Far Cry 6 and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at ultra settings, providing an immersive gaming experience.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Battery &amp; charging" comment="subhead" text="Battery &amp; charging"><span data-til="noop">Battery &amp; charging</span></cmsannotation><br />The ROG Strix Scar 17 is equipped with a 4-cell 90-watt-hours battery, which comes with a 330W power brick. Asus claims that the laptop can charge from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes, but this is under the assumption that the laptop is not actively engaged in any system activity. In real-world scenarios, with the machine powered on, a few background apps running, and the Silent profile enabled from Armory Crate, it took approximately 42 minutes to reach the halfway mark of the battery's capacity. However, if you prefer to avoid carrying the large power brick around, the Asus machine also offers the convenience of 100W charging via one of the Type-C ports.<br /><br />Battery life has historically been a concern for gaming laptops unless you are performing regular office or college work that is less demanding. While it's impossible to game on battery power alone, the laptop can last around 4-5 hours with normal work usage before recharging.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Conclusion" comment="subhead" text="Conclusion"><span data-til="noop">Conclusion</span></cmsannotation><br />The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 has a price tag of Rs 2,69,990. While it's important to compare specifications and acknowledge the shortcomings of each device, when you're in this price range, it's crucial to choose a gaming laptop that resonates with your preferences. The HP Omen offers a powerful and beastly experience, the Dell Alienware provides an otherworldly gaming experience, and the MSI Raider is a formidable contender. All of these options have their merits.<br /><br />On the other hand, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 takes a different approach. It's like a silent, unassuming, and lethal ninja with hidden features. Striking a fine balance between performance and portability, it's an easy recommendation for me. In fact, if I purchase a gaming laptop, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is my top choice.<br />

New Delhi, Jan 16 () Mutual funds industry body Amfi has requested the government to allow low cost debt-linked saving schemes, with tax benefits, to deepen bond market, and lower holding period in gold and commodity ETFs to one year from existing three years for LTCG purposes.
<p> In its Budget proposals to the Finance Ministry, the industry body has also demanded that the government recognise mutual funds (MFs) as specified long-term assets, qualifying for Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG), as well as bring ULIPs of life insurance companies and equity MF schemes on par.
</p><p> The mutual fund body has also asked for dividend distribution tax (DDT) exemption for EPFO, NPS and insurance companies investing in MF schemes and pass-through status for income tax purpose to those Category III AIFs which make 65 per cent investments in listed equities.
</p><p> "Amfi's suggestions have been in the Budget proposal list for a few years. We are hoping this time our long pending submissions get addressed, which would help take the Indian MF industry not only to the next level of growth but also help in contributing to making economy stronger, especially with deepening of bond market, making long term availability of funds for infrastructure growth, and reducing the fiscal deficit by shifting investments from pure gold to gold ETFs," Amfi Chief Executive N S Venkatesh said.
</p><p> Some of the proposals are also aimed at bringing parity with comparable investment avenues and making mutual funds more retail investor friendly, he added.
</p><p> The Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) said that mutual funds should be allowed to introduce low-cost, lower-risk tax-exemption-linked debt-linked savings schemes (DLSS) on the lines of equity linked saving schemes (ELSS).
</p><p> It further proposed that investments up to Rs 1.5 lakh under DLSS be eligible for tax benefit, subject to a lock in period of 5 years.
</p><p> At present, equity-linked savings schemes qualify for tax benefits under Section 80 CCC of the Income Tax Act for an investment limit of up to Rs 1.5 lakh in a fiscal year.
</p><p> In order to make gold and commodity ETFs more attractive, the industry body has proposed to lower the holding period for LTCG purposes from 3 years to 1 year, as is the case for listed debt securities.
</p><p> Besides, Amfi has requested clarity in respect of creation of segregated portfolio in mutual fund schemes, on capital gains tax treatment upon sale of mutual funds units with regard to the treatment of the units allotted consequent on segregation of portfolio.
</p><p> In addition, it has proposed that the threshold limit in equity oriented mutual fund schemes be restored to 50 per cent. Reducing the threshold limit of equities from 65 per cent to 50 per cent for being regarded as 'equity-oriented fund' would encourage more investors with lower risk appetite to invest in such funds.
</p> Amfi has also proposed that the definition of equity oriented funds be revised to include investment in Fund of Funds schemes, which invest predominantly in units of equity oriented mutual fund schemes.   SP

According to UBS, games </span><span>that use ray tracing will not be released until 2019 - so consumers have no reason to upgrade their chips to the RTX version before these games are on market.</span><span></span></p><p><span>"Barring Nvidia bringing ray tracing into the mainstream segment of the market and down the entire stack, RTX is only attractive for the very high-end of the market," Arcuri said.</span></p><p><span>"In the absence of these new games, the generation-to-generation performance boost of Turing versus Pascal, ignoring ray tracing and DLSS, appears to be less attractive than Pascal based on the gaming hardware websites we reviewed," he added.</span><span></span><span></span></p><p><span>Arcuri thinks Nvidia is in the process of launching new low-tier RTX graphics cards that will become available in 2019, meaning Nvidia's gaming-segment revenue is highly reliant on the around 70 million users who are still on Maxwell/Kepler, Nvidia's previous versions of microarchitecture, to upgrade to Pascal.</span><span></span></p><p>So the bottom line is that from now until 2019 Nvidia needs consumers to buy its new chips, A<span>rcuri said. </span>To reflect this, Arcuri slashed his price target for Nvidia to $260 from $285, still 17% above where shares are currently trading.</p><p>His note sent Nvidia shares down 4% on Tuesday.
