As per a statement released by the <keyword id="6375040" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Power-Ministry">Power Ministry</keyword>, in the ongoing fiscal, 5,537 villages have been electrified till date. 
 "258 villages have been electrified across the country during the last week (February 15-21, 2016) under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna (<keyword id="2740503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DDUGJY">DDUGJY</keyword>)," said the statement. 
 
Out of these 5537 villages, 120 are from Odisha, 64 from Jharkhand, 41 from Assam, 19 from Madhya Pradesh, 8 from Rajasthan, and 6 from Chhattisgarh. 
 
"In 2015-16, 5,537 villages have been electrified till date. Out of the remaining 12,915 villages, 9,026 are to be electrified through grid and 3,381 through off-grid where grid solutions are out of reach due to geographical barriers, (among others)," it further read. 
 
As per PM Modi's Independence Day speech of 2015, the government would be electrifying 18,452 villages within 1,000 days i.e. by May 1, 2018.

Bhubaneswar, Mar 5 () National Thermal PowerCorporation (NTPC) on Thursday said it will set up two newunits at Talcher Thermal Power Station in the state with aninvestment of Rs 7,400 crore."NTPC achieved the milestone of declaration ofcommercial operation of one unit Darlipali super thermal powerstation. Next on our agenda is to set up two units of 600 MWeach at Talcher Thermal," Sanjeev Kishore, NTPC's executivedirector (Eastern Region-II), told reporters here.While the first unit of 800 MW of Darlipali project inSundargarh district commenced commercial operation on March 1,its second unit of the same capacity is expected to becomplete in the next six months, he said.The Odisha government has granted approval for settingup two new units at Talcher Thermal in coal-rich Anguldistrict, Kishore said."We are working in tandem with the state governmentfor the proposed new units at Talcher Thermal. Fifty per centof the power generated from these units will be for Odisha,"the NTPC official said.Though there are certain technical glitches, talks arein the advanced stages of sorting out the issues, he said,adding, tariff for electricity to be produced from the newunits would be fixed as per the CERC norms.NTPC Eastern Region II has an installed capacity of5,020 MW at present.He said that under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram JyotiYojana (DDUGJY), work in 15,289 villages out of 17,136 havebeen completed.Kishore said NTPC is setting up a medical college cumhospital in Sundargarh district, while an Industrial TrainingInstitute is being constructed in Ganjam district. NTPC to set up 2 new units at Talcher Thermal in Odisha

Nearly 40% of India’s 1.2 billion residents do not have access to reliable electricity and like all other sectors, power has also been on the priority when it comes to announcing big schemes. Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has pledged to eliminate the void that has crippled the sector for the past two years. To achieve the target, the centre has launched the Deendayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and approved Rs. 43,033 crores to strengthen sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure in rural areas. But one of the main challenges that the government is facing right now is last mile connectivity. Though 96.7% villages are connected, according to 2011 census only 33% households, that is around 8 of 24 crores, do not have electricity. Modi has announced measures for this too. The centre has got state run enterprises to invest over Rs. 55,000 crores for better grid connectivity. But the whole mission is full of challenges that the government needs to pass in order to ensure <keyword id="3249173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="24x7-power-for-all">24x7 power for all</keyword> by 2019. Experts see 2019 as only a far-fetched dream with the present conditions. 

	Challenges
 

	1. The real test is to connect the grid efficiently between producers and distributors. The current transmission system is insufficient to transfer power from surplus parts of the country to the deficit parts. States are also unable to buy cheaper power.
 

	2. Another fundamental issue is the gap between the cost of delivery and the ability of the customers to pay for that power.
 

	3. To ensure recovery of debt-ridden distributors so that they are able to set tariffs that reflect the true cost of power is another test the government has to pass.
 

	4. India also needs to increase the amount of coal it mines, while also cutting down on theft.

<ul><li>The government has ‘delivered’ on its promise to electrify all 597,464 inhabited villages in India.</li><li>A village is considered electrified if 10% of its households and public places — schools, panchayat office and health centre — have access to power. </li><li>Only 1416 villages have achieved 100% household connectivity.</li></ul>On Saturday, <keyword id="6359754" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="manipur">Manipur</keyword>'s <keyword id="6483825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Leisang-village">Leisang village</keyword> became the last non-electrified inhabited village to gain access to electricity. With that, the government has ‘delivered’ on its promise to electrify all 597,464 inhabited villages in India, 1000 days from when Prime Minister Modi made the commitment to do so on 15 August 2015. In fact, they delivered a little before time. It helped that 577,000 villages already had access to electricity before the pledge was made. However, what’s to be noted is that a village is considered electrified if the basic infrastructure, such as distribution transformer and lines, have been set up in the inhabited localities, including Dalit hamlets, and 10% of its households and public places — schools, panchayat office and health centre — have access to power. The NDA government launched the ₹760 billion Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) on 25 July 2015. The original target was to provide electricity to 18,452 unelectrified villages, which was later bumped up to 19,727 villages. However, as on 20 April 2018, of the total number of ‘electrified’ villages, only 1416 villages have achieved 100% household connectivity, according to the data on the <a href="http://garv.gov.in/dashboard#4" data-type="tilCustomLink">Grameen Vidyutikaran (rural electrification) website.</a> Former Power Secretary, P Uma Shankar told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/all-indian-villages-now-have-access-to-power-supply/articleshow/63965591.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Times Of India</a>, "Village electrification means that the infrastructure to supply power has now reached certain parts of the village. The next step should be to focus on providing connection to all households and ensuring adequate power supply to these homes."  The <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>, however, was quick to call the government out on the obvious gloating, claiming that it was taking “fake credit”.
