<ul><li>77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.</li><li>42 MLAs from the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) have criminal backgrounds. </li><li>While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. </li></ul>Karnataka Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed affidavits submitted by the newly-elected MLAs (Member of the Legislative Assembly) in the Karnataka assembly. The results of the analysis were hardly surprising - 77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 54 MLAs have declared serious criminal cases against them, which could include anything from murder to kidnapping. While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. The elections in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka this week has been fraught with high drama. The results of 222/224 seats were as follows - the BJP won 104 seats, the <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword> bagged 78 seats and the <keyword id="123462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> (Secular) won 37 seats. Needless to say, a battle ensued as to who would claim the throne but just today the BJP legislature party leader B S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the chief minister. According to the ADR analysis, 42 of the 104 MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criminal backgrounds, while 23 of the 78 MLAs from the <keyword id="1571" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-party">Congress party</keyword> and 11 out of 37 Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits. Other shocking but not-so-shocking revelations from this report include: Assets <ul><li>215 out of 221 MLAs declared assets of over Rs 1 crore. </li><li>15 MLAs from the three leading parties declared assets of more than Rs 100 crore.</li><li><keyword id="28100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MLA">MLA</keyword> N. Nagaraju declared the highest assets of over Rs 1,015 crore whereas D.K Shivakumar (Rs 640 crore) came in second and Suresh B.S. (Rs 460 crore) third - all three belong to the Congress Party.</li><li>SA Ramadas from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru is the poorest MLA with assets to the tune of just ₹39 lakh. </li></ul>Gender <ul><li>There are only seven women among the 222 newly elected MLAs.</li></ul>Education <ul><li>61% declared that they are graduates or above, 36% declared themselves as Class V-XII pass</li><li>One MLA has declared he is ‘literate’ while “one did not give his educational qualification in his affidavit."</li></ul>Age <ul><li>135 MLAs are between 41 and 60 years old</li><li>64 are between 61 and 60 years old</li><li>15 MLAs are between 25 and 40 years old </li><li>Three are above 80 years old.</li></ul>

A couple of months ago, a B-school held an event where the evergreen topic of discussion - innovation – was talked about. The event was being attended by three top CEOs representing blue chip technology and FMCG companies. It was there that <keyword id="416080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="D-Shivakumar">D Shivakumar</keyword>, CEO of <keyword id="110163" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PepsiCo-India">Pepsico India</keyword>, shared his thoughts on this subject, mentioning his three tips to fostering mavericks and consequently innovation. Shivakumar said that because of senior management being out of touch with the market and its focus on expertise and experience, mavericks and ideas mostly get killed. "The desk is a dangerous place to see the world from. I fully subscribe to that," he said. Therefore, he believes that travelling is the solution, and the marketplace needs to be visited for at least one week per month. He added that during meetings, CEOs or the person in chair should be the last one to speak. "I heard someone say that the highest paid person gets his opinion heard. I would seriously urge the CEOs and whoever is chairing the meeting to speak last." Lastly, he said that companies need to spot the centre of competence of the idea, so that they can quickly latch onto it. This means that if a product person gives a packaging idea, lacking the competence to deliver, it should be immediately passed to the relevant team. CEOs should speak last: PepsiCo India CEO D Shivakumar

Beverages and snacks giant <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo+India+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo India </a>has more women in leadership roles than most of the companies and it is planning to improve the count further. 
 
The company is planning to have at least 40% women among its top deck in India in the near future. Currently, the company has around 23% women at managerial positions and is already leading in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gender+diversity&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">gender diversity</a>. The company currently has 5 women in its 14-member executive committee. 
 "I think there is enough empirical evidence globally now to show that higher representation of women on boards over a long period of time produce better results. That's what most people are seeking .Getting the numbers is just one part. The second is to create the culture, and the third is to have role models in the company. When women see women in the management team, they aspire to be there," <keyword id="110163" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PepsiCo-India">PepsiCo India</keyword> CEO <keyword id="416080" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="D-Shivakumar">D Shivakumar</keyword> told ET. 
 "Anyone can provide policies, but providing a culture which fosters and encourages women at work is difficult. For big company initiatives and change agenda, the tone from the top is very important for the rest of the managerial cadre to say that this is the mandate in the company," <keyword id="144341" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivakumar">Shivakumar</keyword> added.

 <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword> is said to follow a principle that is to hire the best women and have a performance culture in the company. 
 
The company launched a programme in which it identifies senior managers who it sees as a leader in 10-15 years. Except the managerial level, the company is also looking forward to increasing the <keyword id="499855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gender-diversity">gender diversity</keyword> for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FMCG+sector.&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">FMCG sector.</a> 
 
"The objective is to familiarize and acquaint graduates and post graduates from tier I, II towns through skill-building workshops on skills required for the workplace, assess them and help them with job opportunities," Suchitra Rajendra told ET. 
 
Around 1,000 students have been covered by the programme so far and the count is expected to go up this year to create an impact on 10,000 women in the country.

PepsiCo India is hiring more women workforce to its top deck

Consequently, security has been beefed up across Karnataka. Former Prime Minister <keyword id="214964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="H-D-Deve-Gowda" source="Orion">H.D. Deve Gowda</keyword>, Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, and former Union minister S.M. Krishna expressed their condolences on the untimely death of Puneeth. According to family sources, Puneeth suffered a heart attack while working out at a gym. Immediately he was shifted to Vikram Hospital. Dr Ranganath Nayak stated that his condition was critical when he was brought to the hospital. But the efforts of doctors to revive him went in vain. Puneeth's health worsened on Thursday evening but he did not visit a doctor. He went to the gym in the morning and developed chest pain. He was taken to a private clinic where ECG was done. During check up, his condition worsened and he was rushed to Vikram Hospital, where he succumbed to cardiac arrest. Puneeth has donated his eyes. He is survived by wife Ashwini and daughters <keyword id="7713881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vanditha" source="Orion">Vanditha</keyword> and Dhruthi. Security has been beefed up all across the state including state capital Bengaluru to manage the situation. The Kannada film industry has come to a grinding halt and all movie shows have been cancelled in the state. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has reached the residence of Puneeth at Sadashivanagar. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Kannada actor Puneeth's elder brother Shivarajkumar are also expected to address the media shortly. Puneeth was born on March 17, 1975 and was fondly known as 'Appu'. He was also a singer, television presenter and producer. He acted in more than 29 films and has also appeared in many films as a child artiste. He won the National Film Award for Best Child Artiste for his role in 'Bettada Hoovu'. He made his debut in the Kannada film industry with the movie 'Appu' in 2002. Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar passes away, security beefed up across Karnataka

<keyword id="110163" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PepsiCo-India">PepsiCo India</keyword> Chairman and CEO <keyword id="416080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="D-Shivakumar">D Shivakumar</keyword> sees an upward growth of <keyword id="1729323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="franchising-industry">franchising industry</keyword> in India. He said the industry can reach USD 50 billion by 2017 and create 11 million additional jobs. "By 2017, the opportunities for franchise business model in India would be USD 50 billion and the big ones would be in sectors such as <keyword id="97035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apparels">apparels</keyword>, consumer deliverables, electronics and mobile," Shivakumar said here at the World Franchise Congress 2015. The industry is currently estimated to be around USD 30 billion with an annual growth of 30 per cent. Shivakumar predicted that it could create 47,000 new companies by 2017 as India has a new breed of entrepreneurs," he said, adding that it is expected to contribute almost 4 per cent of India <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> in 2017. 

	Elaborating on sectors which would contribute majorly, he singled out apparels, with USD 11 billion, followed by consumer deliverables, electronics and mobile (USD 11 billion), furniture and furnishings (USD 5.3 billion), and pharmacy and jewellery with USD 4 billion and USD 3 billion, respectively.
 

	Shivakumar said for over 100 years, franchising has been a fundamental driver of PepsiCo's success, which today covers more than 120 countries. It has build strong partners across the country in the last 25 years.
 

	"PepsiCo India's north operations are franchisee operated and the company works closely with various beverage bottlers to build a strong footprint of brands which are the first choice of consumers," he said.
 

	PepsiCo is focused on strengthening both COBO (company-owned bottling operations) and FOBO (franchise-owned bottling operations), he added.
 

	When asked about present scenario for franchising, he said, "India has the correct franchise business environment as other have...we believe that the franchise model is the future business model of the industry".
 

	On being asked that from where the opportunity would come, he said, "It would across the country, as luxury goods would be in the metro cities, QSR (quick service restaurants) would be across the country, and apparels would be in tier II and III."

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword>'s new India head D <keyword id="144341" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shivakumar">Shivakumar</keyword> told employees that the company "cannot afford to lose a day" and called for "relentless execution", drumming up enthusiasm among staff in the battle for market share with <keyword id="6391475" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Coca-Cola">Coca-Cola</keyword> and other rivals as he takes over the local unit of the beverage and snacks maker that has been without a <keyword id="6369681" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="chief">chief</keyword> executive for about half the year. 
 
"We are a daily market share business much like newspapers, milk, cigarettes and airline seats. These industries cannot afford to lose a day. Hence, the key is relentless execution," Shivakumar said in a letter to employees that ET has seen. 2014 is a "must-win" year for the company, he added. "We need to give it all we have." 
 
The note tries to send out a positive signal, said two mid-level employees who didn't want to be named. 
 
Rocky Year for <keyword id="985688" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="india-unit">India Unit</keyword> 
 
"Shiv's first letter indicates he is one of us... and that everyone in the company can directly reach out to him," one of them said. Asking employees to "teach" him the business, Shivakumar said he wants to "learn and contribute". 
 The year has been a rocky one for the Indian unit. Manu Anand exited the company abruptly in June to join Cadbury Kraft, leaving the post of <keyword id="17958" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chairman-and-CEO">chairman and CEO</keyword> vacant until former <keyword id="107835" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nokia-India">Nokia India</keyword> chief Shivakumar took over earlier this month. 
 Further, the firm's biggest investment in sport - the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament - got mired in controversy over spot fixing, leading to a good deal of discomfiture. <keyword id="44672" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pepsi">Pepsi</keyword> has paid 400 crore over five years for sponsoring the <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>. 
 PepsiCo's global chairman and <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> <keyword id="6421975" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indra-Nooyi">Indra Nooyi</keyword> told ET in an interview last month that she would want the firm to be associated with a sport with "no controversy". In addition to this, the economic slowdown has cut into sales as consumers keep a tighter check on discretionary spending than before, although this would have had an equal impact on rivals as well. Shivakumar’s immediate mandate is to accelerate consumption of colas and snacks in an economic environment that’s still in the doldrums. 
 However, finance minister <keyword id="43940" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="P-Chidambaram">P Chidambaram</keyword> and central bank governor Raghuram Rajan both expect growth to strengthen in the second half of the year, partly because good monsoon rains are expected to boost farm income. 
 Meanwhile, the snacks business is getting increasingly fragmented with established rivals such as <keyword id="6357073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="ITC">ITC</keyword> and <keyword id="29464" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Parle">Parle</keyword> chipping away at PepsiCo’s share, and several smaller companies such as <keyword id="15107" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Balaji">Balaji</keyword> and <keyword id="1872606" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bikaji">Bikaji</keyword> emerging as strong contenders. 
 
Shivakumar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, shouldn’t run short of money when it comes to pursuing the company’s ambitions aggressively. 
 
Nooyi said last month that Pepsi will invest Rs 33,000 crore ($5.5 billion) in the country by 2020 on manufacturing, infrastructure and product innovation, reflecting the importance of India as a market for the company, which is running up against resistance to sugared sodas in developed countries. 
 Shivakumar, who has worked in <keyword id="6365619" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hindustan-UniLever">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> and <keyword id="49855" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="philips">Philips</keyword>, urged the Pepsi team to “execute plans with conviction” and said that the strategies of divisional leaders Gautham Mukkavilli, Praveen Someshwar and Pratik Pota are robust. 
 Mukkavilli is CEO of the beverage business, Someshwar heads the food business and Pota is in charge of NourishCo, a joint venture with the <keyword id="6360721" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tatas">Tatas</keyword>. 
 
Shivakumar told ET soon after his appointment that he was “fundamentally an institution builder, team player and very much a brands person”, Previously managing director at Nokia India and then senior vice president for India, Middle East and Africa, he is the first outsider to take over as CEO at Pepsi since 2006, when Rajeev Bakshi quit.

Bengaluru, Oct 23 (IANS) Taking serious exception to the BJP's poll promise in Bihar of providing free Covid vaccine if the party is voted to power, the Congress in Karnataka termed the saffron party as "Opportunist BJP" while the Karnataka BJP countered it by asking the Congress to "remove hate Modi glasses" and know the difference between governance and poll promise. Launching a scathing attack through his Twitter handle, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah said, "Would the state BJP dare to ask the Union government to provide free Covid vaccines for Kanndiagas too?" He also said that Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa won't make such a promise to Kannadigas. Pointing at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who is a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said, "Sitharaman has made it clear that distribution of Covid vaccine entirely depends on the outcome of the Bihar elections. Should the pandemic not be a concern for the Union government? What does PM Narendra Modi have to say about this? Is it vote over health and life for BJP?" Training his guns on the BJP MPs and other leaders from the saffron party, Siddaramaiah said the state has elected 25 BJP MPs and these MPs have no gumption to even make a formal demand to supply free vaccines to Karnataka. Taking pot-shots at the BJP, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, D.K. Shivakumar demanded that the ruling BJP at the Centre must come out in the open on whether the Union government has started the procurement of vaccines for this disease. "If they have, they could have at least used them to save their own leaders like Union Minister of State for Railways, Suresh Angadi. Union ministers of Sitharaman's stature should not have been part of such politicking," he said while campaigning for the party candidate in R.R. Nagara, which is going to the polls on November 3. Rebutting these allegations, Karnataka BJP too tweeted, saying: "Dear @siddaramaiah If you remove your 'Hate Modi Glasses' and look around, you will see that PM @narendramodi treats all Bharatiyas as equal. <ul><li><keyword id="233883" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bommai">Bommai</keyword>, 60, is the latest among the state ministers to be infected by the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> though all of them have been asymptomatic and most of them have recovered.</li><li>In a tweet in Kannada earlier, Bommai said the infection was confirmed in the Covid test conducted yesterday (Tuesday) for a working boy in his house.</li></ul> Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai tested positive for Covid-19 and is in home isolation as he is asymptomatic, an official said on Wednesday. "Bommai tested positive for the virus. As it is asymptomatic, he is under home quarantine in the city," one of his staff told IANS here. In a tweet in Kannada earlier, Bommai said the infection was confirmed in the Covid test conducted yesterday (Tuesday) for a working boy in his house. "In this backdrop, I have also been tested and I have been infected. I am isolated at home though no symptoms and am healthy," said Bommai in Kannada. Bommai, 60, is the latest among the state ministers to be infected by the coronavirus though all of them have been asymptomatic and most of them have recovered. Ahead of the monsoon session of the state legislature from September 21, Urban Development Minister Byrathi Basavaraj tested Covid positive and was admitted to a private hospital in the city on Tuesday. Basavaraj, 56, is the ruling BJP's legislator from the K.R. Puram Assembly segment in the city's eastern suburb. State Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chauhan also tested positive for the corona virus on September 9 at Bidar in the state's northern region. Early this month, state Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar tested positive on September 5 and has been in home quarantine for treatment at Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district in the state's northwest coastal region. Besides state Chief Minister B.S. Yeddiyurappa, half-a-dozen ministers, including B.R. Sriramulu (Health), C.T. Ravi (Tourism), <keyword id="2478692" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shashikala-jolle">Shashikala Jolle</keyword> (Women and Child Development), K.S. Eshwarappa (Rural Development), Anand Singh (Forests &amp; Environment) and S.T. Somashekar (Cooperation) tested for the virus and were discharged after they recovered over the last one month. Opposition Congress leader Siddaramaiah, his party's state unit president D.K. Shivakumar and scores of lawmakers of the BJP, Congress and Janata Dal-Secular were affected by the virus and recovered after treatment since July. With so many ministers and legislators getting infected, Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Kageri Hegde on September 8 directed all the MLAs to undergo RT-PCR test in their respective constituencies on September 18 before the 8-day monsoon session from September 21 at Vidhana Soudha in the city centre. "Only those who test negative will be allowed to attend the session. The legislators should carry a certificate from a state-run hospital showing they tested negative for the virus when they enter the Assembly," said Kageri. The state legislature has made elaborate arrangements for the session in compliance with the standard operating procedure of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Covid-induced guidelines of the Union Health Ministry to prevent the pandemic spread. Wearing of a mask, washing hands with sanitizers and maintaining social distancing will be mandatory for all the legislative members. Karnataka Home Minister Bommai tests Covid positive

As the impact of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=demonetisation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">demonetisation</a> fades away, the consumer goods companies are looking at a better consumption to bounce back as early as next quarter. 
 <keyword id="3862921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Post-demonetisation">Post demonetisation</keyword>, the cash crunch faced by the entire nation did hurt them. According to industry experts, they don’t expect it to last long or cause job losses. In fact, some of them have even started stepping up hiring in anticipation of a demand revival. 
 
“We have seen headwinds on demand, but there is no freeze on hiring or bonuses as growth will be back in the second and third quarters (of calendar 2017), and we have to be ready for that,” Varun Berry, managing director at biscuit maker Britannia, told ET. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo India</a> chairman D Shivakumar also acknowledged the impact of demonetisation on the consumer goods industry. 
 
“But we are hiring in expectation of a consumption revival,” he told ET.

Headhunters from Transearch, GlobalHunt and Korn Ferry said there was a slowdown in hiring at junior or middle levels in the FMCG sector after the November 8 demonetisation announcement, but that has changed now. In senior positions, there wasn’t any impact, they said. 
 The most fatal casualties face ddue to demonetisation were by neighbourhood stores that transact mostly in cash. Even as consumers visited modern retail outlets more frequently and paid electronically, cushioning the impact for the <keyword id="495979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="FMCG-industry">FMCG industry</keyword>. 
 
According to an expert, across channels, the hit was mostly on non-premium categories targeting consumers with least purchasing power, but the highermargin premium products remained mostly insulated from the demand slowdown. 
 
While the situation is improving for both kirana stores and the organised ones in cities and big towns with easing money supply, rural markets remain a concern. 
 
“There was impact on demand and it was severe across consumer staples, considering that almost 90% of the sales traditionally happen across mom-and-pop stores. But a demand and consumption recovery phase is kicking in and banks are returning to a level of normalcy. However, demand recovery in rural markets will take more time as transactions have been almost entirely cash dependent,” Deloitte India partner Anil Talreja told ET.

Similarly, senior executives with large portfolios have suddenly seen their roles shrink," said a senior executive with PepsiCo India.

Patni has joined Kellogg's India as finance director (CFO), while Kinjal has moved to Amazon India as HR director &amp; head. 
 
"All functions except supply chain and sales had become PO1 two years ago," D Shivakumar, chairman &amp; CEO, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-early-contenders-for-pepsi-ceo-indra-nooyis-job-2012-3?IR=T">PepsiCo India</a>, told TOI. " The retail industry is facing attrition of around 40%. The industry in general is facing an attrition of around 15-20%. We have created larger jobs in sales and marketing."
