The stock dipped 1.24 per cent to settle at Rs 1,512.30 even after a positive beginning on the BSE. During the day, it declined 1.52 per cent to Rs 1,507.95. On the NSE, shares of the company went lower by 1.10 per cent to settle at Rs 1,514.35, paring early gains. During the day, it dropped 1.50 per cent to Rs 1,508.30. The company's market capitalisation (mcap) got eroded by Rs 14,434.12 crore to Rs 11,48,880.80 crore. In traded volume terms, 12.55 lakh shares of the company were traded at the BSE and over 211.49 lakh shares at the NSE during the day. <keyword id="19896378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC">HDFC</keyword> Bank on Saturday reported a Rs 17,257.87 crore net profit for the March quarter on a consolidated basis, over 2 per cent higher than that in the preceding quarter. Its consolidated net profit for FY24 came at Rs 64,060 crore. On a standalone basis, the country's largest private sector lender reported a net profit of Rs 16,511.85 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 16,372.54 crore in the December quarter. In July 2023, the bank merged its home loan-focused parent HDFC into itself. The bank, which is among the first lenders to announce the numbers for the quarter, reported that the core net interest income grew to Rs 29,080 crore for the reporting quarter, while the other income grew to Rs 18,170 crore. On the net interest margin (NIM), wherein it had to face investors' concerns earlier, it reported a 0.04 per cent improvement to 3.44 per cent for the reporting quarter. The gross non-performing assets ratio improved marginally to 1.24 per cent from 1.26 per cent in the quarter-ago period. HDFC Bank shares decline over 1%, market cap erodes ₹14,434 crore

Both venture capital (VC) investment and the number of VC deals grew in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> in the first quarter (<keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword>) this year, from $1.6 billion across 313 deals (Q4, 2023) to $3.2 billion across 354 deals in Q1 2024, a report showed on Monday. <keyword id="19945816" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fintech" source="keywords">Fintech</keyword> continued to attract good attention, although at smaller deal values, according to the 'KPMG Private Enterprise Venture Pulse' report. "As expected, India has seen an uptick in <keyword id="21390504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="VC-investments" source="keywords">VC investments</keyword> despite the deal activity being muted in Asia," said Nitish Poddar, Partner and National Leader, Private Equity, KPMG in India. "This will only increase in the coming quarters given our robust GDP growth, strong demographics and expectation of stable government at the Centre. AI, power tech, health tech and agritech are some key sectors to watch out for," he added. Meanwhile, global VC investment fell slightly from $83.8 billion across 9,458 deals in Q4 2023 to $75.9 billion across 7,520 deals in Q1 this year amid geopolitical tensions, the extended drought in exits among VC-backed companies, and a continued pullback in investment at later deal stages. VC investment dropped in both the Americas and Asia this quarter, while it rose in Europe, the report mentioned. The Americas accounted for almost half of global VC funding in Q1 ($38.2 billion across 3,205 deals) - with the US accounting for the vast majority of this amount ($36.6 billion across 2,882 deals). Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific attracted $18.9 billion across 2,305 deals, while Europe saw $17.9 billion across 1,798 deals, the report said. "Given how dry the exit environment has been for the last 18 months, it's no surprise VC investors are being very conservative in their deal-making right now," said Conor Moore, Global Head, KPMG Private Enterprise, KPMG International. VC investments, deals grew in India in Q1 despite fall in global activity: Report

The UK-based group also accorded two stars to <keyword id="21402083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Amaze" source="keywords">Honda Amaze</keyword> for adult and zero stars for child occupant safety. It also gave three stars in adult safety and five stars for child occupants to <keyword id="20774736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Carens" source="keywords">Kia Carens</keyword> after the latest round of crash tests. The highest score on a vehicle crash test is five stars, while the lowest score is zero stars. "We were disappointed to see Mahindra's one star rating for the Bolero Neo. This falls well below the safety performance we have come to expect from the manufacturer," Global NCAP Secretary General Alejandro Furas said in a statement. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra said the company is committed to deliver vehicles that ensure the safety and satisfaction of customers and users. Bolero Neo has always complied with safety regulations that have been introduced over time and continues to be fully compliant with the latest Indian safety standards, it said. "As we are constantly innovating and improving our vehicles to exceed safety regulations, we want to assure our customers and stakeholders that Mahindra has significantly enhanced safety features in all our recent launches," the auto major stated. Models like Thar, XUV700, XUV300, and Scorpio-N have been recognised with high safety ratings of 4- and 5-star by the Global NCAP, reflecting the company's ongoing commitment to safety. Furas said there has been an improvement in Kia's rating for the Carens since its original test when the model scored a zero rating for adult occupant protection. "However, we were expecting a better performance in the retest given the Carens is fitted with six airbags as standard," he added. On Honda Amaze, Furas stated: "Regrettably Honda did not take the opportunity to update the Amaze with more safety features which explains its disappointing score." Commenting on the development, Honda Cars India said the South Africa spec second generation Amaze has already been tested as four star by GNCAP in 2019. "The latest test basis new protocol shows that the total score is of five-star level. "However, mainly due to the requirement of certain equipment like electronic stability control and side curtain airbags, it resulted in lower rating," the automaker said in a statement. The domestic unit finally settled at 83.37 (provisional) against the dollar, 7 paise higher from its previous close. On Friday, the rupee appreciated by 8 paise to close at 83.44 against the US dollar. "We expect the rupee to trade with a slight positive bias amid easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East which improved global risk sentiments. Retreating US Dollar and crude oil prices may also support the rupee. "However, any fresh aggressions in the Middle East may cap sharp upside. Investors may remain cautious ahead of PMI and inflation data from the US this week. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.10 to Rs 83.60," said Anuj Choudhary Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.02 per cent higher at 106.17. US Dollar eased as the tensions between Israel and Iran seem contained over the weekend. The Dollar still managed to stay above the 106 mark on a hawkish US Federal Reserve, Choudhary added. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.69 per cent to USD 86.69 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex advanced 560.29 points, or 0.77 per cent, to settle at 73,648.62 points. The Nifty rose 189.40 points, or 0.86 per cent, to close at 22,336.40 points. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Friday as they purchased shares worth Rs 129.39 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's forex reserves dropped by USD 5.401 billion to USD 643.162 billion for the week ended April 12, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. The overall reserves increased USD 2.88 billion to a new high of USD 648.562 billion in the previous reporting week. Gold plunges ₹1,450 to ₹72,200, silver prices dive by ₹2,300

Even as international <keyword id="19910265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-prices" source="keywords">gold prices</keyword> fell relatively on Monday with relative ease in <keyword id="19955176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="geopolitical-tensions" source="keywords">geopolitical tensions</keyword> in the Middle East, the prices of the safe haven yellow metal are seen rallying towards USD 2,500 in case of further escalation in the war situation. At the time of filing this report, gold June futures contracts were 1.4 per cent or USD 35 lower at USD 2,378.70 per ounce, after a five-week rally. According to a Bloomberg report, gold remains almost 15 per cent higher so far this year, with gains supported by central bank buying and demand from Asia. Ajay Kedia, a Mumbai-based expert and head of Kedia Advisory, said fundamentals in the gold are not working at present. He said the geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East is leading to the strengthening of the <keyword id="19976503" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dollar-index" source="keywords">Dollar index</keyword>, which is typically negative for gold. Further, he said the gold market is now in an overbought zone. Any de-escalation in the <keyword id="20132853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Middle-East-crisis" source="keywords">Middle East crisis</keyword> is key for gold, he said, as he advised investors to avoid taking positions in the market. In case of further escalation, he sees gold at USD 2500 and with de-escalation USD at 2,320. Historically, gold, as an asset, is considered to be haven as it typically manages to retain or appreciate its underlying value in times of turbulence. Gold finished March at USD 2,214 per ounce, 8.1 per cent higher month-over-month, driven by higher risk and positive momentum. The move in the gold price year-to-date has also been likely aided by growing geopolitical risk, continued central bank demand and resilient gold consumer buying, said the World Gold Council recently. "Looking forward we find that, while gold is trading at all-time highs, investment demand - especially that linked to gold ETFs - remains low and given the right conditions could provide additional support," the gold council said in a report. Particularly for India, a key market, it said Indian elections will likely stall local demand in April. "India, the world's largest democracy, goes to the polls in April. The market will see little activity during the six-week election period. To boot, a diminished wedding season on the other side suggests that, all else equal, we should not expect to see any pent-up demand from Indian consumers in June," it argued. Gold consumption tends to be impacted during the election season as typically there is heightened scrutiny on the movement of cash, gold, and jewellery. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the various industry stakeholders (bullion dealers, manufacturers, and jewellers) limit their transactions during this time, the World Gold Council said. Gold is at an all-time high and is getting attention, but the council believes assets at such levels are challenging for investors who think they may have missed the boat. "However, our analysis suggests that gold is currently well supported by fundamentals, and the low participation from US investors in particular augurs well for the rally to continue, in contrast to what we saw in 2011," it added. Escalation in Middle East crisis could fuel international gold prices to USD 2,500

Morgan Stanley is firm on <keyword id="20130580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indias-growth" source="keywords">India's growth</keyword> outlook, given the support it is getting from <keyword id="19965934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-demand" source="keywords">domestic demand</keyword>. Citing high-frequency data, the global investment banking firm said it remains constructive on the growth outlook. Against that backdrop, it expects India's <keyword id="19972825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP-growth" source="keywords">GDP growth</keyword> to be at 6.8 per cent in the current financial year 2024-25 and 6.5 per cent in 2025-26. On the macro side, it anticipates headline <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> to remain supported by favourable base effects. It projected inflation to remain in a range of around 5 per cent in the second quarter, before moderating to 4.1 per cent year-on-year in the second half of 2024. For the next financial year, it expects retail inflation to average 4.5 per cent. Similarly, the current account deficit is likely to remain benign, supported by strength in service exports, and remain within the policymakers comfort zone at 1-1.5 per cent of GDP in 2025-26. On <keyword id="20104157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monetary-policy" source="keywords">monetary policy</keyword>, it expects policy rates to remain steady at 6.5 per cent in the horizon. "This is on the back of a shallower and deferred rate cut cycle for the Fed on the global front and improving productivity growth, a rising investment rate and inflation tracking above the target of 4 per cent on the domestic front," it explained. Inflation continues to remain the main concern for the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy committee members before it goes ahead and loosens its stance on key interest rates. As per the minutes of the latest monetary policy meeting released on Friday, there have been several mentions of uncertainties around inflation. Going ahead, food price uncertainties would continue to weigh on the inflation outlook, it said. Pressure in food prices has been interrupting the ongoing disinflation process in India, and posing challenges for the final descent of inflation trajectory to the 4 per cent target. The RBI is currently focused on bringing down the inflation to 4 per cent target on a durable basis. Retail inflation in India is in RBI's two-six per cent comfort level but is above the ideal 4 per cent scenario. In March, it was 4.85 per cent. Inflation has been a concern for many countries, including advanced economies, but India has largely managed to steer its inflation trajectory quite well. Meanwhile, along anticipated lines, RBI kept the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent earlier this month, the seventh time in a row. The repo rate is the rate of interest at which the RBI lends to other banks. Barring the latest pauses, the RBI raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively to 6.5 per cent since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline. India's economy grew 7.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 8.7 per cent in 2021-22, respectively. As per the second advance estimates, real gross domestic product (GDP) expanded at 7.6 per cent in 2023-24 on the back of buoyant domestic demand. India is set to remain the fastest-growing among major economies in 2024, according to the International Monetary Fund's latest World Economic Outlook. The volatility index, India VIX, fell by 19.72% to settle at 10.20, indicating low volatility in the market. Finally, the Nifty closed the day on a positive note at 22,368. Technically, after the strong pullback rally, the index is likely to pause near 22,500-22,530 levels. If the index sustains above 22,530, the Nifty could attempt to break its all-time high of 22,776; otherwise, the index could witness consolidation in the 22,000-22,500 zone. Nifty sees modest gain, Sensex inches higher; Market sentiment remains cautious amid global developments

Expanding the scope of its hearing in the <keyword id="19980518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patanjali" source="keywords">Patanjali</keyword> Ayurved case, the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="266" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Tuesday took a stern view of <keyword id="20610549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="misleading-advertisements" source="keywords">misleading advertisements</keyword> by FMCG firms and asked three Union ministries to inform it about the steps they have taken to curb the practice which takes "public for a ride" and adversely affects their health. The court passed the order after Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. told a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah that they have issued unqualified public apology in as many as 67 newspapers over misleading advertisements and are willing to issue additional advertisements expressing their contrition. The bench said the public apology published in newspapers were not on record and asked those to be filed within two days. It posted the matter for April 30 for further consideration. While hearing the Patanjali case, the apex court said the implementation of the relevant provisions of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Consumer Protection Act and the related rules also needed a closer examination. It said the issue was not limited to Patanjali but extended to all Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) firms which have been issuing "misleading advertisements and taking the public for a ride, in particular affecting the health of babies, school-going children and senior citizens who have been consuming products on the basis of the said misrepresentation". "We must clarify that we are not here to gun for a particular party or a particular agency or a particular authority. This is a PIL, and in the larger interest of the consumers, public should know which way they are going and how and why they can be misled, and how authorities are acting to prevent it," the bench said. The court asked the Union ministries of consumer affairs, information and broadcasting, and information technology to explain what action they have taken to prevent the misuse of consumer laws. It also sought an explanation from the Centre over an August 2023 letter issued by the Ministry of Ayush to the licencing authorities of all states and Union Territories and drug controllers of Ayush asking them to not initiate any action under rule 170 of Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. The bench also asked the <keyword id="20083252" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Medical-Association" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Medical Association" meta.hostid="266" meta.entityid="Indian Medical Association">Indian Medical Association</keyword> (IMA), the petitioner in the Patanjali advertisements case, to "put its house in order". It said several complaints have been made about alleged unethical acts by members of the IMA who prescribe highly expensive medicines and line of treatment. The bench also ordered impleading the National Medical Commission (NMC) as a respondent in the matter for effective assistance to the court. At the outset, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd managing director Balkrishna, told the bench they have issued on Monday unqualified apology for the "lapses" on their part. "Where? Why it is not filed?" the bench asked. Rohatgi said it was issued on Monday in 67 newspapers across the country. When the court asked the senior advocate why did the respondents wait for a whole week before publishing the public apology, Rohatgi said, "Its language had to be changed". The court also quizzed him about the size of advertisements. "Is it the same size of advertisements that you normally issue in newspapers?" it asked Rohatgi, who submitted "It costs tens of lakhs (of rupees)". The bench ordered that the apology published be filed on record and added it wanted to see the actual advertisement published in newspapers. "The said advertisements are not on record. It is submitted that the same have been collated and shall be filed in the course of the day with copies to counsel for the parties. Needful shall be done within two days with copies to counsel for the parties," it said. The counsel said additional advertisement shall be issued by Ramdev and Balkrishna tendering unqualified apology for the lapses on their part. The bench said it was necessary to implead the three central ministries in order to examine the steps taken to prevent the abuse of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act and rules, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Consumer Protection Act. It said these ministries shall file affidavits enunciating the action they have taken to prevent the misuse/abuse of these statutes along with the relevant data since 2018. The bench said licencing authorities of all states and UTs shall also be impleaded as co-respondents in the matter. The bench told the IMA's counsel that while they are pointing fingers at Patanjali, "the other four fingers are also pointing at you (IMA)". On April 16, the apex court had warned Ramdev and Balkrishna against any attempt to "degrade allopathy" and permitted them to tender a "public apology and show contrition" within a week in the contempt proceedings in the misleading advertisements case against Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. The apex court is hearing a plea filed in 2022 by the IMA alleging a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern systems of medicine. Supreme Court expands Patanjali misleading ads hearing to include FMCG companies

The oil-to-telecom-and-retail conglomerate's consolidated net profit stood at Rs 18,951 crore, or Rs 28.01 per share, in January-March quarter of the 2023-24 fiscal compared to Rs 19,299 crore, or Rs 28.52 a share, a year ago, according to a company's stock exchange filing. The profit was, however, higher quarter-on-quarter when compared to Rs 17,265 crore in October-December period. For the full fiscal FY24 (April 2023 to March 2024), Reliance posted a record net profit of Rs 69,621 crore as compared to Rs 66,702 crore earnings in the preceding financial year. Reliance also became the first Indian company to hit Rs 10 lakh crore turnover in FY24 when revenue from operations rose 2.6 per cent from Rs 9.74 lakh crore in 2022-23. The oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business, the main milch cow, posted a rise in profitability annually as well as sequentially, while retail business' earnings rose on new store openings despite lower footfalls. The mainstay oil refining and petrochemicals business, called O2C, posted a 11 per cent rise in revenue and a 3 per cent higher EBITDA at Rs 16,777 crore in Q4. This was primarily because of "advantageous" sourcing of feedstock (crude oil) for refining business and use of ethane for making chemicals as well as higher domestic product placement, a company statement said, adding exports were down 8.5 per cent. Also, aiding the business was rise in data traffic to 40.9 billion GB in January-March from 38.1 billion GB in the preceding quarter. For the full year, Jio posted a profit of Rs 21,424 crore as compared to Rs 19,124 crore in FY23. Profits from the retail business climbed 11.7 per cent to Rs 2,698 crore as store count rose to 18,836 from 18,774. Store footfalls dropped to 272 million from 282 million in October-December 2023 but were higher than 219 million recorded in January-March 2023. Oil and gas EBITDA soared 47.5 per cent to Rs 5,606 crore as higher gas volumes partly offset lower price realisation. The firm's flagship KG-D6 block in Krishna Godavari basin in the Bay of Bengal is now producing about 30 million standard cubic metres per day of gas and 23,000 barrels a day of oil/condensate. The company said its outstanding debt rose to Rs 3.24 lakh crore from Rs 3.11 lakh crore in December-end. After accounting for cash in hand, net debt at Rs 1.16 lakh crore as on March 31 was lower than Rs 1.25 lakh crore a year back. Reliance Industries quarterly profit stays flat; annual earnings hit record at ₹69,621 crore

India was the fourth largest military spender globally in 2023 with an expenditure of USD 83.6 billion, behind the US, China and Russia, according to a report by an independent international think-tank. The report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shared on its website in April also said the "rise" in global military spending last year can be attributed "primarily to the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating geopolitical tensions in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East". The military expenditure went up in all five geographical regions, with major spending increases recorded in Europe, Asia and Oceania and the Middle East, it said. The report comes amid ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world such as the ones involving Israel-Hamas, Iran-Israel, Russian-Ukraine besides volatility in the Red Sea region. "World military expenditure increased for the ninth consecutive year in 2023, reaching a total of USD 2443 billion. The 6.8 per cent increase in 2023 was the steepest year-on-year rise since 2009 and pushed global spending to the highest level SIPRI has ever recorded," according to the report. The <keyword id="21404979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-military-burden" source="keywords">world military burden</keyword> -- defined as military spending as a percentage of global gross domestic product (GDP) -- increased to 2.3 per cent in 2023. Average military expenditure as a share of government expenditure rose by 0.4 percentage points to 6.9 per cent in 2023 and world military spending per person was the highest since 1990 at USD 306, it added. With military expenditure of USD 83.6 billion in 2023, India was the "fourth largest spender globally". Indian spending was up by 4.2 per cent from 2022 and by 44 per cent from 2014. The increase in India's military spending was "mainly a result of growing personnel and operations costs" which made up almost 80 per cent of the total military budget in 2023, the <keyword id="20911352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIPRI-report" source="keywords">SIPRI report</keyword> claimed. "This aligns with the government's priority to strengthen the operational readiness of the armed forces amid ongoing tensions with China and Pakistan. In comparison, capital outlays to fund military procurement remained relatively stable at around 22 per cent of the budget in 2023," it said. A total of 75 per cent of these outlays went towards equipments produced domestically, which was the highest level ever and up from 68 per cent in the previous year. The continued shift towards domestic procurement reflects India's goal of becoming self-reliant in arms development and production, the think-tank said in its repot fact sheet shared on its website. The Indian Army has maintained that deployment of its troops and other elements along the LAC is "extremely robust" and "balanced". The Stockholm-based think-tank monitors developments in military expenditure worldwide and maintains the most comprehensive, consistent and extensive publicly available data source on military expenditure, according to its online portal. The US military spending was USD 916 billion in 2023, which was 2.3 per cent more than in 2022 and 9.9 per cent more than in 2014, the report said. The US remained by far the largest spender in the world, allocating 3.1 times more to the military than the second largest spender China. "The biggest percentage increase among all US military spending categories in 2023 was for 'research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&amp;E)". The Stockholm-based think-tank also said in its report that Ukraine was the "eighth largest spender" in 2023 after a spending surge of 51 per cent to reach USD 64.8 billion. This gave Ukraine "a military burden of 37 per cent and represented 58 per cent of total government spending". "Ukraine's military spending in 2023 was 59 per cent the size of Russia's. However, Ukraine also received at least USD 35 billion in military aid during the year, including USD 25.4 billion from the US. Combined, this aid and Ukraine's own military spending were equivalent to about 91 per cent of Russian spending," the report claimed. According to the report, Russia's military spending increased by 24 per cent to an estimated USD 109 billion in 2023. "China, the world's second largest military spender, allocated an estimated USD 296 billion to the military in 2023, an increase of 6 per cent from 2022. This was the 29th consecutive year-on-year rise in China's military expenditure. China accounted for half of total military spending across the Asia and Oceania region. Several of China's neighbours have linked their own spending increases to China's rising military expenditure," the Stockholm-based think-tank claimed in its report. In 2023, the 31 <keyword id="20763732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NATO-members" source="keywords">NATO members</keyword> accounted for USD 1,341 billion, equal to 55 per cent of the world's military expenditure, the report said.
