<p>Despite banks reopening today, there was no panic, just a few <a href="https://twitter.com/cypnew/status/317224168733159425">long lines</a> scattered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/probably-the-best-picture-of-journalists-trying-to-see-a-bank-run-in-cyprus-2013-3">among packs of journalists.</a></p>
<p>A better word, though, might be "paralyzed."</p>
<p>We just spoke by phone with George Christodoulou, manager of Press Cafe, a coffee shop on the main drag in Nicosia's Old City.</p>
<p>He repeatedly said that everyone is worried. They're worried about their jobs, their pensions, their livelihoods — everything.</p>
<p>You don't need to riot in the street to express fear. </p>
<p><span>As he quipped to us, "Business is a bit strained right now."</span></p>
<p>He confirmed what <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-cyprus-banks-are-calm-today-2013-3">we reported earlier</a>, that the reason why people aren't emptying the shelves is that they can't — capital controls have temporarily stunted all commerce.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">He did acknowledge that prior to the crisis, many Cypriots had been living too large.</span></p>
<p>"People need to start living differently — reduce their expenses, live with less," he said.</p>
<p>He corroborated our report yesterday, that anyone who has the means to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cyprus-exodus-begins-2013-3">is seriously contemplating leaving the country.</a></p>
<p>Cyprus has basically been in a depression since the Greek crisis began several years ago.  </p>
<p class="p2">So while the crisis has become more acute in the past two weeks, things could still be even worse, Christodoulou said.</p>
<p class="p2">"I'm not happy, but I can't be sad either. My health is more important than these things."</p>
<p class="p1">We're glad to hear it.</p>

<p>My favorite person on Facebook is a 58-year-old woman we'll refer to as Nancy. Nancy is the mother of an old college friend. We became friends on Facebook my sophomore year of college, when Facebook opened up its network of users to include those outside the walls of higher education.</p><p>It has been nearly 10 years since Nancy and I became friends, and I look forward to seeing her status updates every day. Why? Because Nancy is a "Facebook Wine Mom."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Okay so you're probably wondering,&#xa0;<em>what or who is a Facebook Wine Mom?</em>&#xa0;But you probably already know one! She's a mom who posts about it "being 5'oclock&#xa0;somewhere!" or "needing an IV of pinot grigio!" She's the 60-year-old equivalent of a high school junior who had their first box of Franzia in someone's basement.</p><p>The term was first mentioned on Twitter, <a href="topsy.com">according to Topsy</a>, by user @capecodkyrakyra on March 24 of this year. One "Mom Who Needs Wine" recently asked the group if she was the only one who had ever served her child Oreos for breakfast. (The Answer? Oreos are a kind-of justifiable food group.) Inside 'Facebook Wine Mom' culture, where hundreds of thousands of women share memes about wine, coffee, and their kids

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The year 2022 was one of the worst for flight delays and cancellations in the US.</li><li>As a frequent flyer, I was worried about having to deal with more flight disruptions in 2023.</li></ul><p>As much as I love to travel, I hate flying.</p><p>But that didn't stop me from traveling more in 2022 than I have in years: a 30th birthday trip to Aruba; a family vacation in Cyprus; a long weekend with a friend in <a href="https://www.insider.com/greenkayak-copenhagen-trash-cleanup-review-photos-2022-9">Copenhagen</a>.</p><p>I don't regret any of these trips, but like <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-travel-woes-chaos-for-tourists-this-year-2022-7">many travelers in 2022</a>, I could have done without the travel disruption that came with them. On multiple occasions, I spent hours in airports glued to departure boards waiting for updates that weren't going to come. Airline apps and websites weren't much help, either.</p><p>But after two flight cancellations and a handful of delays, I vowed 2023 would be the year I'd become a smarter traveler. Even if I couldn't control the whims of the airline industry, I told myself I had to find a way to get answers ahead of time.</p><p>After a little research, I found <a href="https://www.flightyapp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flighty</a>, a travel app that shares real-time updates on everything from where your plane is before you get on it to where to pick up your bags — a godsend for a habitual overpacker like me.</p><p>I used the app on two recent trips — one to Miami, another to London — and loved getting flight updates before the airlines shared any. I felt like I was one step ahead, and it saved me time and energy at the airport. If you're someone who also travels a fair amount, and like me gets anxious at the airport, I'd recommend it. I've found it so useful, I even pay for the premium version.</p><h2>I rarely buy apps but I don't regret paying for Flighty</h2><p>There's a free, basic version of Flighty available to download on an iPhone, but I've found the app is better if you pay for it.</p><p>The free version shares real-time updates on flight delays; gate changes; departure, takeoff, and check-in time; and cancellations. </p><p>A paid subscription for Flighty Pro currently costs $5.99/month or $49.99/year and comes with additional data including "where's my plane" alerts — my favorite part of the app — plus notifications about FAA airport delays and traffic, connection information, aircraft changes, and a flight-path map.</p><p>Paying for the app also gives you updates on arrival time and baggage-claim information, which not all airlines offer. And as someone who usually checks a bag, it's nice to know before the plane doors even open where I can find my stuff.</p><p>I signed up for a free trial for Flighty Pro in February before my flight to Miami for a work trip and liked it so much that I ignored my reminder to cancel, happily paying $5.99/month for the premium version.</p><p>Since then, I've jumped for a year's subscription for $47.99, which works out to $4/month, saving me 33% on the monthly fee. The usual price is $49.99/year, but the app offered me a discounted rate, presumably because I was already paying the monthly fee; it also refunded me the difference between what I'd paid so far this year when I upgraded, which was nice.</p><p>There's a "lifetime" subscription fee for $249, too, but I'm happy with the yearly fee for now.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Flighty screenshots show users' flight history." height="1102" width="1644" msid="99742960" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>For an app that pulls so much information, it's simple to use</h2><p>At first, I thought I'd have to input a bunch of flight-confirmation numbers to get updates but thankfully, there's a speedier option: You can either manually search for flights, or sync your calendar to automatically import all your flight information — a no-brainer.</p><p>Syncing my calendar showed me not only all my upcoming flights, but also the flights I'd taken in the past, which you'll enjoy if you too are a travel nerd.</p><h2>It's worth it for the 'Where's My Plane?' function alone</h2><p>By far, I think the best part of the app is the "Where's My Plane?" function.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.flightyapp.com/">Flighty's website</a>, the app monitors an aircraft's whereabouts for 25 hours before a flight's departure time and says a late inbound plane is the No. 1 reason for a delay.</p><p>It came in handy before my flight to Miami, which wound up being delayed by 49 minutes. Thanks to Flighty, I knew ahead of time and could see my plane was 39 minutes late to arrive at Philadelphia International Airport, where I was waiting. Instead of sitting at the gate waiting for updates, I ordered another coffee at the terminal's La Colombe and answered emails.</p><div type="image" title="Screenshots show flight data on Flighty." height="1134" width="1645" msid="99742964" hostid="261"></div><p>Equipped with this intel, I felt more relaxed than usual in the face of a delay, especially for a work trip. I thought back to last summer when I waited for a flight to Copenhagen at New York City's JFK Airport, and was one of the passengers cheering when the aircraft turned up hours after its original departure time. The airline I was flying with shared no information on the plane's whereabouts, beyond that it was late. Had I used Flighty, I'd have known when it would arrive. I could've visited the lounge for a sandwich, rather than sitting at the gate, stomach rumbling.</p><h2>A forecast with flight predictions is another smart feature</h2><p>Another part of the app I like is the "Arrival Forecast," which gives an overview of an airline's performance on your route in the last 60 days.</p><p>While waiting for the plane to arrive in Philadelphia to take me to Miami, I felt reassured to see that most of the delays for that route weren't worse than 45 minutes. <p>In celebration of the <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=xx+commonwealth+games&amp;oq=XX+c&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j0l4.975j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;es_sm=91&amp;ie=UTF-8">XX Commonwealth Games</a> in Glasgow, Scotland, top Glasgow mixologist Mal Spence of the <a href="http://www.kelvingrovecafe.com/">Kelingrove Café</a> has created the Commonwealth Cocktail, which has a total of 71 ingredients.</p>
<p>That's the greatest number of ingredients ever used in one cocktail, <a href="http://peoplemakeglasgow.com/commonwealth-cocktail">according to People Make Glasgow</a>. </p>
<p>The drink contains ingredients sourced from every nation competing in the Commonwealth games, making it truly representative of the event. Ingredients include papaya from Rwanda, dragonfruit from Belize, mangosteen from India, and red apple from England. </p>
<p>Spence gave out 71 free Commonwealth Cocktails at the Kelvingrove Café beginning on July 23, and all 71 were gone by the end of that day, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KelvingroveCafe">according to Kelvingrove Cafe's Facebook page</a>. However, People Make Glasgow does provide <a href="http://peoplemakeglasgow.com/media/230580/a5_cocktail_cards_05-2.jpg">a very modified recipe</a> for an at-home Commonwealth Cocktail, so you can get a little taste of the drink.</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Egyptian officials said that an EgyptAir flight heading from Paris to Cairo crashed Wednesday night <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/an-egyptair-flight-from-paris-to-cairo-has-gone-missing-2016-5">after initially going missing for hours.</a><p><span><span><span>The Airbus A320 was carrying 66 passengers.&#xa0;</span></span></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">Flight MS804 lost contact with radar at 2:45 a.m. on Thursday, Cairo time (8:45 p.m. EST Wednesday), the airline announced. The flight was scheduled to land at Cairo Airport at 3:05 a.m.</p><p><span>No further details about what happened have been delivered yet as t<span>he airline is currently assembling&#xa0;a search and rescue team.</span></span></p><p><span><span>However questions will naturally circle about what led to the incident and how after apparently reaching&#xa0;</span></span><span><span>an elevation of 37,000 feet, it disappeared from radar.</span></span></p><p>Business Insider spoke to a British private pilot (who wanted to remain nameless) about the general misconceptions about flying an aircraft, distress calls, the black box, and auto-pilot.</p><p><strong>Business Insider: What are the common misconceptions about pilots flying planes?&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Pilot:&#xa0;</strong>Of course the principal thing to remember is that flying is very safe. Obviously there are statistics out there, but more often than not, the people who need convincing of this fact aren't going to be swayed by statistics.</p><p>There are many people who feel as though the "wings might fall off" or that if the engines fail, it's all over - but this simply isn't the case.</p><p>Even an airplane without power will glide for a very long time very easily. Perhaps one of the best known examples is an aeroplane whose fuel leaked out over the Atlantic Ocean, depriving it of both engine power and electricity. The captain - also a glider pilot in his spare time -&#xa0;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transat_Flight_236">landed the aircraft safely in the Azores with only his extremely basic backup instruments</a>.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: So what do pilots do when they are in the air?</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>P:</strong> It's important to remember that there's a lot to do. Actually flying the aircraft is just a small part of what a pilot does.</p><p>In general terms, a pilot is also responsible for the navigation of the aircraft, the performance of the aircraft, the safe operation of the aircraft systems as well as liaising with air traffic controllers via radio.</p><p>Modern automation has taken a lot of the hard work out of these tasks and undoubtedly can do a much better and more accurate job of it than a human could but of course this necessitates a change in how a modern pilot does their job - it's often said that a Captain or First Officer is less a "pilot" and more a "systems manager" and that's probably true for the times when everything goes to plan.</p><p>A modern pilot truly earns their pay, though, when things don't go to plan and there's no automated substitute for experience and intuition and modern training reflects this.</p><p><strong>BI: So is automation / auto-pilot a bad thing?</strong></p><p><strong>P:</strong> Perhaps another misconception is that automation is inherently a bad thing - it's demonstrably not.</p><p>Without a doubt it's taken some of the romance and mysticism out of flying aeroplanes but in the modern day, the world needs safe and reliable transport solutions and delegating tough and complex tasks to dedicated machinery is a necessary part of that.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The danger comes when pilots allow their core, "hand flying" skills atrophy after many thousands of hours of uneventful automatic flying and these skills let them down when they're most needed - in the stress of a system failure.<p>Naturally, pilots are required to undergo modern, rigorous and continuous training throughout their careers to stymie this, but a few recent examples of air accidents [AF447, Asiana 214] illustrate that more can always be done.</p><p>Finally it's worth noting that aviation practice, procedure and law is always evolving to become safer and more efficient. We don't operate in the same environment as 1950s - or even 1980s - aviators.</p><p>Many refinements and improvements are a direct result of air disaster investigations (and it's comforting to know that some good usually comes from a disaster). For example, the specialist language that pilots and air traffic controllers use is constantly becoming less ambiguous and easier for aviators to interpret.</p><p>Controllers and pilots never use the phrase "take off" until the exact moment they're required to actually start their takeoff sequence as a direct result of the world's worst aviation accident when two jumbo jets in thick fog believed <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenerife_airport_disaster">they could use the same runway at the same time, to name one example</a>.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: What are the most common problems that aircrafts can incur if the weather is fine?</strong></p><p><strong>P:</strong>&#xa0;Commercial, passenger operations are required to operate under all weather conditions and, as such, operate principally using instruments and navigation techniques that do not require good weather.</p><p>Therefore, even in good weather, commercial pilots will be flying using their instruments (for example, their "artificial horizon"), on-board GPS-like navigation systems, ground-based navigational radio beacons and relying on air traffic control's radar and instructions to keep clear of other aircraft.</p><p>Naturally it's possible to become over-reliant on these systems and problems can ensue if an overly-reliant pilot has to do without a missing part of this puzzle, even when that part isn't required.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>A recent example is that of a flight whose pilot was so dependant on a ground-based radio landing aid that, when the aid was offline for maintenance in perfect weather with an unhindered view of the runway, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiana_Airlines_Flight_214%20">they crashed a perfectly fully-functional modern aeroplane just short of the runway edge</a>.<p>One could argue that in such cases (and in other cases where a fully functional aeroplane is mishandled [AirFrance 447], the airline's training regime should focus less on automation and more on basic "hand-flying."</p><p><strong>BI: How much is auto-pilot used when flying?</strong></p><p><strong>P:</strong> For commercial operations, it varies depending on the operator's standard operating procedures and culture, the individual pilot's particular tastes, the weather, and how much automation is available.</p><p>At one end of the scale, some operators insist that their flight crews use automation from the earliest possible moment (seconds after takeoff) until the latest possible moment, late into the landing sequence and occasionally right down to the runway surface.</p><p>At the other end, a flight might be hand-flown for the entire duration (not uncommon if the flight isn't too long and if the pilot feels like it) or hand-flown during takeoff, climb, and well into the cruise phase as well as the descent and landing phase, with the automated systems handling the majority of the cruise (obviously most common during long-haul flights).</p><p>For example, this was posted by a pilot on Reddit with the caption: "<a href="http://imgur.com/wSFR8Ae">Want to know how it feels to fly an airliner? Stare at this picture for about two hours while slowly consuming three cups of coffee</a>":</p><div><div><a href="http://imgur.com/wSFR8Ae"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>P:</strong> The (usually orange) flight data and cockpit voice recorders are:<p class="embed-spacer" style="padding-left: 30px;">(a) not indestructible - they're designed to withstand significant hardships, violence and temperatures but a prolonged fuel fire can and will render any data on them unreadable.</p><p class="embed-spacer" style="padding-left: 30px;">(b) not infinite - some recorders only capture the last few hours of a flight, some the last few minutes - which may not help if any accident sequence is prolonged (like if, for example, whatever doomed MH370 happened early but it flew on for hours).</p><p class="embed-spacer" style="padding-left: 30px;">(c) not infallible - on very rare occasions, following an accident, it's been found that the accident flight has not been recorded at all due to an undetected failure on a much earlier flight.</p><p class="embed-spacer" style="padding-left: 30px;">(d) occasionally not easy to find if, for example, an accident aircraft breaks up in mid-air and distributes wreckage over a very large area and of course, as many people know, their automatically-activated underwater sonar "pingers" expire after a month or so.</p><p class="embed-spacer">It is, however, the single best tool in an accident investigator's box and even the cockpit voice recorder can yield a wealth of data on, for example, engine performance and flight conditions beyond simply recording the pilot's voices based on the noise in the cockpit.</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/barack-obama-doppelganger-indonesia-2015-2">This 40-year-old Indonesian is Obama's doppelgänger</a></h3>        <div>            <div>        <div class="ooyala-video-player" data-video-autoplay="false" data-video-id="d1Y21iczpy9ODsMGFD3MgBIFRpYAWhOw" data-player-variable="ooyalapopvideo" id="ooyalaplayer_popvideo" style="width:1280px;height:720px"></div>        </div>        </div>            </div>
