It took over a decade and 1,000 hours of photography to create this picture of the Milky Way

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longest-observed-supernova-explosion-annihilated-massive-star-2019-8">supernova explosion</a> of a massive, dying star was so bright that ancient humans would have seen it from Earth about 15,000 years ago.</li><li>The <keyword id="517558" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="supernova">supernova</keyword>'s blast wave continues to scream through <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword>, heating and compressing dust and gas in a way that causes them to glow in a web of colorful ribbons called the <keyword id="245269" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cygnus">Cygnus</keyword> Loop.</li><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword>'s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-hubble-photo-shows-fluffy-galaxy-with-empty-center-2020-7">Hubble space telescope</a> recently captured an image of the Cygnus Loop in unprecedented detail.</li></ul><p>When a star runs out of the nuclear fuel burning at its core, it collapses under its own weight. This death is so violent and sudden that it sends out a shock wave that hits the star's outer layers and causes them to explode in a supernova — the largest type of explosion humans have ever seen.</p><p>Somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, ancient humans probably saw one such explosion glowing in the skies. It came from a dying star about 20 times the mass of our sun. The supernova was about 2,500 light-years away, but it glowed so bright that it was visible from Earth.</p><p>"This was before written language, but the universe kept a beautiful record of the blast," <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> writer Corey Powell recently <a href="https://twitter.com/coreyspowell/status/1301969715183661056">wrote</a> on Twitter.</p><p>That's because the explosion's blast wave is still expanding through space, at a speed of about 220 miles (350 kilometers) per second. The edges of the blast wave push material from the supernova through low-density matter in space, heating and compressing tendrils of dus and gas.</p><p>So the supernova explosion lives on as a web of colorful, glowing ribbons in the sky. This is called the Cygnus Loop because it's located in the constellation Cygnus from our vantage point on Earth.</p><p>NASA's <keyword id="145693" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hubble-Space-Telescope">Hubble space telescope</keyword> snapped a striking photo of these supernova remnants, which was released last month. It captures a small section of the blast wave in unprecedented detail.</p><p>The European Space Agency, which co-manages Hubble with NASA, published the image below last month.</p><p>The entire blast wave spans an area of the sky six times larger than the full moon.</p><div type="image" title="cygnus loop nebula supernova" height="2000" width="2000" msid="78236799" hostid="261"></div><p>The image above, captured by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer telescope before it shut down in 2013, shows the full Cygnus Loop.</p><div type="image" title="cygnus loop supernova nebula hubble" height="770" width="800" msid="78236801" hostid="261"></div><p>Hubble first snapped a photo of the Cygnus Loop in 1991, though at that time the space telescope's primary mirror had an abnormality that made its images a little blurry. Hubble had launched just one year earlier; it would be another two years before astronauts visited and fixed the telescope.</p><p>Hubble was the first space telescope designed for in-orbit maintenance. Astronauts have visited it four more times to replace parts and upgrade its hardware.</p><p>As a result, the telescope takes much better pictures now, and we can see the Cygnus Loop in better detail than ever before.</p>

NASA's Hubble space telescope captured the ribbon of a supernova blast that ancient humans saw about 15,000 years ago

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The photographer J-P Metsavainio captured images of the Milky Way for 12 years to create a mosaic.</li><li>It shows 20 million stars in the galaxy and features the remains of three supernovas.</li></ul><p>The <keyword id="410481" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Milky-Way-Galaxy">Milky Way galaxy</keyword> is <a href="https://www.sciencenews.org/article/astronomers-have-found-edge-milky-way-size">nearly 2 million light-years</a> across. To visualize even a small chunk of this collection of asteroids, stars, planets, dust, and gas, photographers have to piece together a vast collection of telescope images.</p><p>For the past 12 years, the photographer J-P Metsavainio has undertaken that challenge.</p><p>Metsavainio started taking snapshots of the Milky Way from his observatory in Oulu, Finland, in 2009. Earlier this month, he <a href="https://astroanarchy.blogspot.com/2021/03/gigapixel-mosaic-of-milky-way-1250.html">released a mosaic image of the galaxy</a> that stretches from Taurus, a <keyword id="114188" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Constellation">constellation</keyword> about 2,200 light-years from Earth, to Cygnus, another constellation about 6,100 light-years away.</p><p>The mosaic captures about 20 million stars in total. (The entire Milky Way has hundreds of billions of stars.)</p><p>It also features objects that are tough to catch on camera, like the remains of three supernovas.</p><p>"When you work with the same project almost 12 years, it's easy to think that there can't be many surprises," Metsavainio told Insider. But catching the ghostly debris on camera, he said, was among the most unexpected elements of his Milky Way project.</p><div type="image" title="Cygnus Mosaic supernova remnant" height="1701" width="2709" msid="81658088" hostid="261"></div><h2>The images took 1,250 hours to capture</h2><h2><div type="image" title="J P Metsavainio observatory" height="1495" width="1152" msid="81660178" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Metsavainio lives about 90 miles from the Arctic Circle and has a private at-home observatory. For six months of the year, the cloudless sky above his home is ideal for stargazing. He takes advantage of this winter period to observe objects via telescope and snap photographs of them. </p><p>"I work every single clear night," he said. </p><p>Metsavainio often stays up late, photographing in silence, he said. On a given night, he added, he can observe an object for four to seven hours, depending on its height on the sky.</p><p>He prefers to take pictures manually using a wide-aperture telephoto lens.</p><p>"I'm a perfectionist regarding my work," he said. "I don't want to miss a single valuable clear moment due to some small software glitch."</p><p>In total, he spent 1,250 hours collecting images for his Milky Way mosaic.</p><p>He stitched the individual images together in Photoshop, using stars as a guide to match the shots. His mosaic uses color coding to represent ionized elements lingering in the galaxy: red for sulfur, green for hydrogen, and blue for oxygen.</p><p>The final image shows several <keyword id="1684499" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="nebula">nebula</keyword>e - clouds of dust and gas in which new stars form - in different constellations. Those include the California Nebula in the constellation Perseus, which is about 1,000 light-years from Earth, as well as the Cave Nebula in the constellation Cepheus, about 2,400 light-years away.</p><div type="image" title="california nebula" height="1026" width="1369" msid="81658096" hostid="261"></div><p>The mosaic also shows the first black hole ever discovered, Cygnus X-1.</p><p>But Metsavainio said the <keyword id="517558" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="supernova">supernova</keyword> remnants were his "absolute favorite" elements of the project. He called them his "three musketeers."</p><h2>The remains of one supernova took 3 years to capture</h2><p>A supernova is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longest-observed-supernova-explosion-annihilated-massive-star-2019-8">final explosion of a dying star</a>. It releases a massive amount of energy, scattering debris across the galaxy and leaving behind an expanding nebula.</p><p>Under normal circumstances, dust blocks our view of these structures.</p><p>"They all are extremely dim and in very dense star field," Metsavainio said. "That makes imaging almost impossible."</p><p>But after 300 hours of observation, he finally snapped enough photos to capture the three clouds of debris.</p><p>One structure in particular, the remnant of supernova W63, was a target of Metsavainio's for many years. It's more than 5,000 light-years away, near the constellation Cygnus - hence its nickname, "Cygnus Shell."</p><div type="image" title="Cygnus shell Supernova" height="1170" width="1560" msid="81658100" hostid="261"></div><p>Scientists haven't identified the original star that exploded to form W63, but they estimate that <a href="https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap181102.html">light from the explosion</a> would have reached Earth more than 15,000 years ago. </p><p>It took Metsavainio three years, from 2015 to 2018, to collect enough photos of Cygnus Shell alone. Capturing objects like this are "the reason I keep doing this slow and lonely work," he said. </p>

<p>The finding was also published today, <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/science.1251999" target="_blank">April 16, in the journal Science</a>.</p>
<p>The new planet, Kepler-186f, is part of a five-planet planet system that orbits a star named Kepler-186, which is cooler and about half the size and mass of our sun.</p>
<p>The newfound system is located about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. Kepler-186f is the outermost planet and the only one circling its star at the right distance to have liquid water on it's surface. Since liquid water is a key ingredient for life to exist, scientists call this sweet spot the "habitable zone."</p>
<p>On planets that are too close to their star, liquid water boils away. Those that are too far don't get enough energy from their star to support a climate and atmosphere similar to Earth.</p>
<p>The planets were discovered using the Kepler spacecraft, launched in 2009 to look for Earth-sized planets near stars like our sun. Kepler has found dozens of exoplanets in the habitable zone, but most of these are gas giants. Kepler-186f is the first confirmed Earth-sized planet potentially with an Earth-like atmosphere and water at its surface.</p>

<p><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Size and composition</strong></p>
<p>Kepler-186f is less than 10% larger than Earth. Scientists confirmed the size of Kepler-186f by measuring how much light it blocks as it passed in front of its host star.</p>
<p>Scientists don't yet know the mass or composition of Kepler-186f, but think it could have a rocky surface based on planets of similar size - like Earth.</p>
<p>"There's a very excellent chance that it does have a rocky surface like the Earth," co-author Stephen Kane, of San Francisco State University, said in a statement.</p>

Hurt (SSC-Caltech)</a></span></p><p class="caption">An illustration of Earth-like planets.</p><ul><li><strong>NASA's has detected 219 possible new planets.</strong></li><li><strong>About 10 of these new worlds may be Earth-sized and habitable. </strong></li><li><strong>The Kepler space telescope that discovered the new planets has so far found more than 4,000 worlds.</strong></li><li><strong>The results suggest that there may be billions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy.</strong></li></ul><p>NASA scientists on Monday announced the discovery of 219 new objects beyond our solar system that are almost certainly planets.</p><p>What's more, 10 of these worlds may be rocky, about the size of Earth, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-most-like-earth-support-alien-life-2016-5">habitable</a>.</p><p>The data comes from the space agency's long-running Kepler exoplanet-hunting mission. From March 2009 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-kepler-spacecraft-planet-hunting-mission-is-over-2013-8">through May 2013</a>, Kepler stared down about 145,000 sun-like stars in a tiny section of the night sky near the constellation Cygnus.</p><p>Most of the stars in Kepler's view were hundreds or thousands of light-years away, so there's little chance humans will ever visit them - or at least any time soon. However, the data could tell astronomers how common Earth-like planets are, and what the chances of finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hawking-warning-space-aliens-seti-2016-12">intelligent extraterrestrial life</a> might be.</p><p>"We have taken our telescope and we have counted up how many planets are similar to the Earth in this part of the sky," Susan Thompson, a Kepler research scientist at the SETI Institute, said during a press conference at NASA Ames Research Center on Monday.</p><p>"We said, 'how many planets there are similar to Earth?' With the data I have, I can now make that count," she said. "We're going to determine how common other planets are. Are there other places we could live in the galaxy that we don't yet call home?"</p><p>Added to Kepler's previous discoveries, the 10 new Earth-like planet candidates make 49 total, Thompson said. If any of them have stable atmospheres, there's even a chance they could harbor alien life.</p><h2>The new Earths next door?</h2><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-releases-kepler-survey-catalog-with-hundreds-of-new-planet-candidates">NASA/JPL-Caltech</a></span></p><p>Scientists wouldn't say too much about the 10 new planets, only that they appear to be roughly Earth-sized and orbit in their stars' "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldilocks-exoplanet-habitability-internal-heat-2016-8">habitable zone</a>" - where water is likely to be stable and liquid, not frozen or boiled away. That doesn't guarantee these planets are actually habitable, though. Beyond harboring a stable atmosphere, things like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldilocks-exoplanet-habitability-internal-heat-2016-8">plate tectonics</a> and not being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/proxima-b-habitable-atmosphere-jwst-2016-9">tidally locked</a> may also be essential.</p><p>However, Kepler researchers suspect that almost countless Earth-like planets are waiting to be found. This is because the telescope can only "see" exoplanets that transit, or pass, in front of their stars.</p><p>The transit method of detecting planets that Kepler scientists use involves looking for dips in a star's brightness, which are caused by a planet blocking out a fraction of the starlight (similar to how the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-total-solar-eclipses-will-end-2017-6">moon eclipses the sun</a>).</p><p><br />Because most planets orbit in the same disk or plane, and that plane is rarely aligned with Earth, that means Kepler can only see a fraction of distant solar systems. (Exoplanets that are angled slightly up or down are invisible to the transit method.)</p><p>Despite those challenges, Kepler has revealed the existence of 4,034 planet candidates, with <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-releases-kepler-survey-catalog-with-hundreds-of-new-planet-candidates">2,335 of those</a> confirmed as exoplanets. And these are just the worlds in 0.25% of the night sky.</p><p>"In fact, you'd need 400 Keplers to cover the whole sky," Mario Perez, a Kepler program scientist at NASA, said during the briefing.</p><p>The biggest number of planets appear to be a completely new class of planets, called "mini-Neptunes," Benjamin Fulton, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and California Institute of Technology, said during the briefing.</p><p>Such worlds are between the size of Earth and the gas giants of our solar system, and are likely the most numerous kind in the universe. "Super-Earths," which are rocky planets that can be up to 10 times more massive than our own, are also very common.</p><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.caltech.edu/news/new-branch-family-tree-exoplanets-discovered-78703">NASA/Kepler/Caltech (T. Pyle)</a></span></p><p>While just 49 of Kepler's thousands of planet candidates are Earth-sized and in a habitable zone, the discovery has rocked the scientific world: This could mean that billions of such worlds exist in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-milky-way-galaxy-looks-like-2016-9">Milky Way galaxy</a> alone.</p><p>"This number could have been very, very small," Courtney Dressing, an astronomer at Caltech, said during the briefing. "I, for one, am ecstatic."</p><h2>Kepler's big back-up plan</h2><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/ames/kepler/searching-for-far-out-and-wandering-worlds">NASA Ames/W. Stenzel and JPL-Caltech/R. Hurt</a></span></p><p>Kepler finished collecting its first mission's data in May 2013. It has taken scientists years to analyze that information because it's often difficult parse, interpret, and verify.</p><p>Thompson said this new Kepler data analysis will be the last for this leg of the telescope's first observations. Kepler suffered two hardware failures (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-kepler-telescope-from-emergency-mode-2016-4">and then some</a>) that limited its ability to aim at one area of the night sky, ending its mission to look at stars that are similar to the sun.</p><p>But scientists' back-up plan, called <a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2014PASP..126..398H">the K2 mission</a>, kicked off in May 2014. It takes advantage of Kepler's restricted aim and uses it to study a variety of objects in space, including supernovas, baby stars, comets, and even asteroids. </p><p>Although K2 is just getting off the ground, other telescopes have had success in these types of endeavors. NASA has discovered hundreds of potential new planets - and 10 may be like Earth

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Every once in awhile, the stars actually do align - then merge, catastrophically explode, and spray their guts all over space.</p><p>Or at least that's the suspected trigger of rare "red novas," so-named for their characteristic red color.</p><p>One of the best-studied red novas happened in 2008. The object, called V1309 Scorpii, was a double-star system (also called a binary) <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1012.0163v2">measured for over 6 years before</a> it merged and erupted.</p><p>But astronomers are desperate to find more such binary systems before they detonate, since watching the cosmic collisions would not only reveal a lot about the evolution of stars and nebulas, but also how space gets <a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1994ApJ...425..797L">seeded with elements</a> necessary for life.</p><p>Part of that effort has been <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1609.06595">a thorough search</a> for binary star systems that look ready to blow.</p><p>However, <a href="http://www.calvin.edu/academic/phys/faculty/molnar/">Larry Molnar</a>, an astronomer at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has gone a big step further with a few colleagues: Over the past 2 years, he's claimed not only to have found such a system, but also predicted when it will blow up as a red nova.</p><p>"No one has ever seen a star go into this kind of explosion. No other situation has come up where any astronomer has ever been able to say, 'this is a star about to blow up,'" Molnar said in a preview for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yYZGOk-oaw">an upcoming documentary</a>, called "Luminous."</p><p>His prognostication is specific enough to make any astrophysicist squirm: Molnar now says the whole thing will <a href="https://calvin.edu/news/archive/astronomy-prof-student-predict-explosion-that-will-change-the-night-sky">go down just 5 years from now</a>.</p><p>In fact, according to Molnar's prediction, the stellar outburst should be visible in the night sky without any help from binoculars or a telescope.</p><p>"[T]he lack of viable alternatives we must take seriously the unlikely hypothesis at hand," Molnar told Business Insider in an email.</p><h2>A dance of death</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The stars in question are a system called KIC 9832227, and they're locked in a dance of death.</p><p>In fact, they're so close together that they share each other's million-degree-plasma atmospheres: an object called a "contact" binary.</p><p>If you could magically teleport to the system, which is located about 1,700 light years from us amid the constellation Cygnus, it might appear as a brilliantly glowing bowling pin.</p><p>But no one was certain that KIC 9832227 was actually a double-star system; all astronomers knew was that its brightness varied over the years. Many types of <a href="http://www.atnf.csiro.au/outreach/education/senior/astrophysics/variable_pulsating.html">stars and star systems "pulsate"</a> their brightness in this way, so Molnar and a Calvin University student had to first rule out any doubt that it was two stars.</p><p>What they found in 2015 is that it behaved much like V1309 Scorpii - one of the best-known binary systems to unpredictably merge - and that the stars' mutual orbits were closing in.</p><p>"Over the past ten years, the period of KIC 9832227 has been getting shorter at a faster and faster rate," Molnar and his team wrote in <a href="https://www.calvin.edu/academic/science/summer/2015posters_papers/Alexanderposter.pdf">a research poster</a> about their discovery. "This implies that the stars are orbiting faster and getting closer together."</p><p>The team has recently ruled out more "mundane" explanations for what they see, according to <a href="https://calvin.edu/news/archive/astronomy-prof-student-predict-explosion-that-will-change-the-night-sky">a January 7 press release</a> by Calvin&#xa0;College.</p><h2>Predicting a violent stellar outburst</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><p>By using data from the few known examples, especially V1309 Scorpii, Molnar has calculated the approximate moment that the two stars of KIC 9832227 will collide: in the year 2022, "give or take a year," according to the release.</p><p>Molnar said the explosion should increase the brightness of the star system 1,000-fold, to about magnitude 2 - roughly as bright as Polaris, the North Star.</p><p>If and when the two stars collide, they aftermath might look something like <a href="http://hubble25th.org/images/12">V838 Monocerotis</a>, a star which suddenly flashed in 2002, temporarily becoming <a href="http://hubble25th.org/images/12">600,000 times brighter</a> than the sun - and the brightest star in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.my/what-milky-way-galaxy-looks-like-2016-9/#E13vrdo3Ok3PVp42.97">Milky Way galaxy</a>.</p><p>Astronomers aren't certain V838 Monocerotis is actually a red nova, but ever since 2002, the Hubble Space Telescope has kept its wandering eye on the expanding gas and dust of the object.</p><p>Researchers in 2006 morphed eight of those Hubble photos to show off the red nova's evolution.
