<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hurricane season may end with a November surge of storms starting next week, AccuWeather forecasts.</li><li>Florida and the Carolinas are most at risk, even as they recover from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-man-refused-leave-hurricane-proof-home-basically-unharmed-milton-2024-10">Hurricanes Helene and Milton</a>.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2024-atlantic-hurricane-season-not-over-storms-predictions-2024-10">Hurricane season</a> seems to be rallying for a final surge of storms.</p><p>AccuWeather,<strong> </strong>a world-leading weather forecasting company, predicts that November will bring one to three <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiffany-trump-wedding-could-be-affected-by-tropical-storm-nicole-2022-11">tropical storms</a> strong enough to get names, and the first one could come in just a week.</p><p>Florida and the Carolinas are the most at-risk states. Communities there are still reeling from Hurricanes <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-vs-rivian-r1t-owner-hurricane-helene-survived-convert-2024-10">Helene</a> and Milton.</p><div type="image" title="neighborhood with flooded streets and lawns after hurricane milton" height="2333" width="3500" msid="114728113" hostid="261" sizebytes="1034234"></div><p>"We are concerned that areas, the entire <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-residents-moving-leaving-climate-change-refugees-hurricanes-flood-2023-2">state of Florida</a> even up into the Carolinas, could be at risk of seeing another tropical impact this season," Alex DaSilva, a hurricane expert at AccuWeather, said in a statement. "And of course, those areas are already very, very vulnerable from multiple hits this season."</p><p>Meanwhile, the AccuWeather forecast predicts very low storm risk for the western <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longshoremen-strike-leaves-east-and-gulf-coast-ports-shuttered-2024-9">Gulf Coast</a> — Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.</p><h2 id="c696dd90-310a-4f80-a582-6f07398990ba">Chance of a December cyclone</h2><p>It's already been a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-relief-disinformation-misinformation-north-carolina-democrats-republicans-2024-10">nasty hurricane season</a>, with storms so far causing more than 300 deaths and nearly $500 billion of losses in the US, according to AccuWeather.</p><p>Hurricane season ends on November 30, but DaSilva said there may be a rare December cyclone this year.</p><p>"It doesn't happen very often, but the very <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-ocean-temperatures-california-heat-atmospheric-river-storms-santa-cruz-2023-1">warm sea surface temperatures</a> could make it possible this year," DaSilva said.</p><p>As greenhouse-gas emissions from human activities drive global temperatures higher, ocean temperatures are also rising. Both warm water and warm air <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-category-6-wind-speed-prediction-2024-2">fuel stronger storms</a>.</p><div type="image" title="image of home destruction" height="3691" width="5536" msid="114728115" hostid="261" sizebytes="2105650"></div><p>Another factor in AccuWeather's forecast is low <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-becoming-more-miserable-climate-crisis-delays-costs-turbulence-2024-8">wind shear</a>, which is the change in wind speed and direction over a short distance. When it's low, the wind is<strong> </strong>less likely to disrupt storm formation.</p><p>The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) does not forecast hurricanes more than seven days out, a representative told Business Insider.</p><p>However, the<strong> </strong>NHC said in August that this Atlantic hurricane season would likely<strong> </strong>produce 17 to 24 named storms total. So far, there have been 15 named storms.</p><h2 id="ce2ab63d-b811-48d3-ae78-5a4e0a528503">A possible storm is already brewing</h2><p>AccuWeather reported "high risk" of a storm forming in the first week of November, starting on Friday.</p><p>The NHC is also monitoring the region, which it has assigned a 40% chance of forming a tropical depression in the next seven days.</p><p>"We're becoming more confident that the next named storm in the Atlantic basin could form within the next week," Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather's chief on-air meteorologist, said in a statement.</p><p>DaSilva said that rain and thunderstorms occurring in the southern Caribbean are "early signs of development," and that a high-pressure area building to the north of that could create the right conditions for a cyclone.</p><p>This could lead to a tropical storm or even a hurricane in the first few days of November," DaSilva said.</p><div type="image" title="Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida" height="683" width="1024" msid="114728122" hostid="261" sizebytes="28832"></div><p>According to DaSilva, if a storm forms there it could move over Cuba and into the Atlantic, or it could head for Florida.</p><p>Only three hurricanes have made landfall in the US in November since 1900. The most recent was Hurricane Nicole, which struck Florida as a Category 1 storm in November 2022 and worsened damage from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-shows-why-hurricane-ian-stunned-meteorologists-storm-hunters-2022-9">Hurricane Ian</a>.</p><p>The others were Hurricane Kate, which hit the Florida panhandle as a Category 2 on November 15, 1985, and the 1935 "Yankee Hurricane," which struck Florida in the first week of November as it traveled down from the north.</p>

Hurricane season isn't over. Experts predict a final surge of storms and maybe even a December cyclone.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Fox Weather's Bob Van Dillen rescued a woman from flood waters live on air in Atlanta.</li><li>Hurricane Helene has caused severe flooding and power outages across the southeastern US.</li></ul><p>Fox Weather reporter Bob Van Dillen rescued a woman from flood waters live on air while reporting on the impact of Hurricane Helene in Atlanta in the early hours of Friday morning.</p><p>In the dramatic <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEMDjihdbH0">footage</a>, Van Dillen could be seen wading into chest-deep water to carry the woman, who was trapped in her car, to safety.</p><p>Van Dillen, who was reporting live at the time on "Fox and Friends," said he leapt into action after hearing her cries for help.</p><p>"I took my wallet out of my pants, and I went in there, waded in, got chest deep," Van Dillen later told "Fox and Friends" hosts Steve Doocy and Janice Dean.</p><p>"She was in there, she was still strapped into her car and the water was actually rising and getting up into the car itself, so she was about, almost neck deep submerged in her own car," he said.</p><p>In the live report, a man who appeared to be the woman's husband could be seen shaking Van Dillen's hand and thanking him.</p><p>"I'd do it again," Van Dillen responded. He then carried on with his Fox Weather report about the record water levels in the area.</p><p>Spokespeople for Fox did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was made outside of normal working hours.</p><p>At the time of writing, at least 52 people had been killed in the storm, which has battered the southeast coast of the US, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnews.com/article/hurricane-helene-florida-georgia-north-carolina-south-carolina-92d5caaafe40644e1db687cf6431395f">the Associated Press</a>.</p><p>Millions of people across Florida and nearby states have been left without power as flood waters rose to record highs in many areas.</p><p>The Category 4 hurricane <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/news/hurricane-helene-makes-landfall-florida">made landfall near Perry, Florida</a>, just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River, on Thursday night. Wind speeds reached up to 140 miles per hour.</p><p>The National Hurricane Center <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/NHC_Atlantic/status/1840041807125655763">said</a> on Saturday that Helene had been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone and was moving slowly across the Tennessee Valley, with heavy rain lessening.</p>

About 33 cm of rain fell during a cloudburst and a lake above the 8th century <keyword id="1674376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kedarnath-temple">Kedarnath Temple</keyword> burst, sending a deluge of water down the valley. Over 110,000 stranded pilgrims were rescued and the actual death toll could be close to 10,000 while 20,000 hectares of <keyword id="6491949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="agricultural-land">agricultural land</keyword> was severely damaged in the deluge. According to a <keyword id="29740" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bloomberg">Bloomberg</keyword> report based on a document from AON Benfield, economic losses due to the floods in India (mostly Uttarakhand) could be $1.1 billion and insured costs around half a million.<br />

The south-westerly monsoon started with this <keyword id="385066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tropical-storm">tropical storm</keyword> in May and affected six countries in South and <keyword id="366595" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="South-East-Asia">South-east Asia</keyword>. Cyclone Mahasen moved up from the southern <keyword id="55869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bay-of-Bengal">Bay of Bengal</keyword> and finally hit Bangladesh, but its effects could be felt in southern, eastern and north-eastern parts of India. Heavy rain lashed Meghalaya as it crossed into neighbouring Bangladesh while severe storms in Andhra Pradesh caused eight deaths and also flooded 739 hectares of farmland. In the coastal districts of Odisha, there were scattered but powerful storms, producing winds up to 72 kmph. Malkangiri saw the heaviest rainfall at 48 mm.<br />

<b>How Extreme Weather Is Battering India This Year</b>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two hurricanes hit Florida in recent weeks, exacerbating a home insurance crisis in the state.</li><li>Insurance experts said the back-to-back hurricanes could signal rising insurance rates nationwide.</li></ul><p>Two back-to-back hurricanes in Florida in recent weeks will likely raise <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-real-estate-worth-it-home-prices-insurance-hurricane-helene-2024-10">home insurance rates</a> even higher in a state that is already grappling with prices nearly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/01/business/florida-homeowner-insurance-rates/index.html">four times</a> the national average, insurance experts told Business Insider.</p><p>"Florida represents an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-category-four-storm-real-estate-market-insurance-damages-2024-10">outsize amount of risk</a> compared to other areas of the world," Kyle Ulrich, president and CEO of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents, told BI. "And we pay commensurately for it."</p><p>But it's not just Florida.</p><p>The compounding financial crises of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-landfall-florida-housing-market-insurance-fema-2024-10">Hurricane Milton</a> could also point to looming hikes in insurance rates nationwide, the home insurance experts said. They pointed to the recent Florida storms as examples of the increasingly severe and frequent climate catastrophes wreaking havoc on the global insurance market.</p><h2 id="25940b76-9ef6-4385-94a3-eb8903a79169"><strong>Florida's battered home insurance market</strong></h2><p>Home insurance rates are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-its-expensive-to-own-a-home-mortgage-insurance-interest2024-4">up across the board</a> in recent years due to a combination of natural disasters and inflation, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://insurify.com/homeowners-insurance/report/home-insurance-price-projections/">recent report</a> from insurance comparison shopping site Insurify. Between 2021 and 2023, overall home insurance costs rose nearly 20%, the report found.</p><p>And, for mortgaged single-family residences specifically, the average monthly property insurance payment has increased 52% nationally since 2019, according to a 2024 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://static.icemortgagetechnology.com/pdf/ICE_Mortgage-Monitor-Report-October-2024.pdf">mortgage report</a> from financial services company Intercontinental Exchange.</p><p>That number is even higher in regions more at risk of environmental disasters. California has seen <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homeowners-california-florida-insurance-issues-natural-disasters-wildfires-hurricanes-2023-10">several top home insurance agencies</a> pull out or limit their business in the state amid a growing risk of destructive wildfires, while tornado-prone states such as Illinois and Arkansas have seen an uptick in premiums as cyclones become more frequent, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/storms-homeowners-insurance-oklahoma-texas-tornado/">according to CBS News</a>.</p><p>"Certainly, areas that are chronically hit by storms, you're seeing either rates increase or insurers pull out completely," Jeffrey Schlegelmilch, a research scholar and director at Columbia Climate School's National Center for Disaster Preparedness, told Business Insider.</p><p>But nowhere in the country is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-home-insurance-prices-premium-effect-from-hurricanes-2024-9">home insurance crisis</a> more acute than in Florida. </p><p>The state has, in recent years, been battered by a wave of costly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-ian-photos-videos-destruction-in-florida-2022-9">hurricanes</a>, seen an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-people-moving-florida-home-prices-cost-of-living-2023-12#:~:text=Florida's%20population%20jumped%20by%201.9,growing%20state%20in%20the%20country.">influx of new residents</a>, and dealt with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.renaissanceins.com/blog/florida-personal-lines-crisis/">fraud</a> over the state's assignment-of-benefits loophole, said Oscar Miniet, regional executive vice president, Southeast for Renaissance, a nationwide network of independent insurance agencies.</p><p>Miniet said the number of insurers willing to write policies in parts of the state most exposed to hurricanes is shrinking, primarily because the potential risk outweighs the possible financial reward. Meanwhile, those that have stuck around, he added, have implemented extremely tight underwriting practices, which leads to homeowners paying far more in premiums, especially in at-risk areas.</p><p>Florida cities like Deltona, Jacksonville, and Cape Coral saw the average property insurance payment for mortgaged single-family residences skyrocket 90%, 86%, and 85%, respectively, since 2019, according to an analysis by financial services company <span>Intercontinental Exchange</span>.</p><p>Tampa — which sustained severe <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-flooding-damage-photos-2024-10#winds-of-up-to-120-mph-ripped-through-the-state-shredding-the-roof-of-tropicana-field-home-of-the-tampa-bay-rays-baseball-team-8">wind damage when Milton</a> landed near Sarasota on Wednesday evening and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">deadly storm surge when Helene</a> touched down last month — has seen insurance payments go up 71% since 2019, Intercontinental Exchange found.</p><p>And Helene and Milton are likely to make matters even worse for Florida homeowners, the insurance experts said.</p><p>The majority of Helene's damage in the state was flooding-related, which isn't included in most home insurance policies. </p><p>But Helene also caused wind damage and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-homeowner-milton-tearing-through-neighborhood-cant-sleep-2024-10">Hurricane Milton's gusts</a> were fierce enough to tear the roof off Tampa's Tropicana Field and spawn several tornadoes that tore through Central Florida.<strong> </strong>Unlike flooding, wind damage is typically covered by home insurance.</p><p>"That is clearly going to have an impact on premiums in the state, said Shahid Hamid, a finance professor at Florida International University and director of the school's Hurricane Research Center's Laboratory for Insurance, Financial and Economic Research. "They're going to go up quite significantly."</p><h2 id="66cc80ec-e36b-4d1c-9df6-0fbbad2a8fb5"><strong>Increased home insurance prices nationwide</strong></h2><p>While Floridians will bear the brunt of Helene and Milton's insurance-related pains, homeowners across the country could also soon feel the pain in their pocketbook thanks to the recent storms and other climate disasters like them.</p><p>Milton and Helene are one-time events, but storms like them can end up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/soaring-home-car-insurance-rates-hurting-americans-finances-us-economy-2023-11">impacting the larger insurance industry</a>, said Jeremy Porter, the head of climate implications research at climate risk evaluation company First Street.</p><p>"When insurance costs get increased, they get increased not only in the places where we're seeing the exposure but they get increased across the industry," he told Business Insider.</p><p>Large insurance companies such as Allstate or State Farm typically take major losses after big storms and, as a result, need to find ways to make up for those loss payouts, Porter said.</p><p>"So you're going to end up seeing people in Kentucky and Idaho and other places that just aren't anywhere near this event that may see a spike, an increase in their insurance costs, just due to the company's overhead and the additional payouts that they're having to make given climate risk in other areas," Porter said.</p><p>But the primary reason homeowners around the country could see their rates rise post-hurricane season is thanks to the global reinsurance market, three insurance experts said.</p><p>The reinsurance market, with hubs in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lloyds-london-firms-face-billions-claims-baltimore-bridge-collapse-2024-3">London</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.abir.bm/why-bermuda/">Bermuda</a>, is where insurance companies can offload some of their risk to a reinsurance company — a kind of insurance company for insurance companies.</p><p>An uptick in reinsurance rates in recent years has been a driving force behind climbing insurance rates nationwide, said Kyle Ulrich, president and CEO of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents.</p><p>Reinsurance rates are determined by worldwide losses, and when prices increase, insurance companies pass financial responsibility to customers who end up paying higher premiums, Hamid said.</p><p>Those increases are, in part, because of climate change. The global reinsurance market has to assess risk against catastrophic events around the globe, from hurricanes in Florida to tsunamis in Japan, Ulrich said.</p><p>But as catastrophic climate events become more common worldwide, homeowners everywhere are bearing the risk.</p><p>"There used to be five storms a year. Now there are 30 storms a year. There used to be one strong one and nine weak ones. Now there are nine strong ones and one weak one," said Oscar Seikaly, CEO of NSI Insurance Group, one of the largest privately owned insurance firms in Florida. "So the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-helene-economy-gdp-damage-cost-rebuilding-florida-climate-2024-10">frequency and severity</a> have been the factors that set the reinsurance industry off guard and put them in panic mode a bit."</p><p>With Hurricanes Helen and Milton shaping up to be massive loss events, reinsurers could be on the hook for paying out billions of dollars of claims, which would, in turn, shrink the reinsurance industry's capacity to supply capital when it comes time to renew contracts next year, thus driving up premiums in the primary market, Yanjun (Penny) Liao, an economist and fellow at nonprofit research institute Resources for the Future,<strong> </strong>said.</p><p>"Because primary insurers rely on reinsurance everywhere, this could happen even in places that are not hit," Liao added.</p>

Its impacts may be felt <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?cone#contents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">much deeper</a> in the US, including in most of Virginia.</p><p>"Today is the day to get prepared all along the East Coast!" the National Weather Service <a href="https://twitter.com/NWS/status/1039141894167703552" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> on Monday morning. "Don't get complacent just because you live inland! Florence is forecast to bring devastating rainfall and flooding from the coast to the Appalachians."</p><p>But Hurricane Florence is not alone in the Atlantic Ocean, as astronauts aboard the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/space-station-pressure-leak-nasa-rocosmos-investigation-2018-9">International Space Station</a> (ISS) saw first-hand on Monday morning: hurricanes <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?cone#contents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Isaac</a> and <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at3.shtml?cone#contents">Helene</a> are trailing behind Florence, making for a looming trio of cyclonic storms.</p><h2>What the hurricanes look like to astronauts in space</h2><p><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/richard-r-arnold" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ricky Arnold</a>, a NASA astronaut aboard the space station, was in the right place at the right time to photograph all three giant storms from his lofty perch.</p><p>"Hurricane #Florence this morning as seen from @Space_Station," Arnold <a href="https://twitter.com/astro_ricky/status/1039143995392307205" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> on Monday. Astronauts in space just photographed 3 threatening hurricanes lurking in the Atlantic Ocean

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Residents of Port Vila, Vanuatu, walk past debris as a wave breaks</p></div><p></p></div></div>Climate change may still seem far off for some, but for the people of the island nations of Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and the Marshall Islands, it is already a disturbing reality.<br /><span class="s1"></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">In recent years, cyclones, droughts, and other natural disasters have become commonplace for these Pacific island nations, as well as several other nations. If sea levels continue to rise at their current rates, some of them will be completely submerged within just a few decades, <a href="http://www.ilo.org/dyn/migpractice/docs/261/Pacific.pdf"><span class="s2">according to a UN report </span></a>released at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris earlier this month.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">"We're being hit with these unprecedented extreme weather events, and as soon as we recover from one, another one occurs," Christopher deBrum, chief of staff for Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak, told Business Insider.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">Kiritbati, a nation of 105,000 people in the central Pacific, could be completely submerged in the ocean in as little as 50 years, Kiribati President Anote Tong said at the climate conference. </span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Mark Abadi</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Others, like Fiji and the Marshall Islands, have suffered floods and droughts that have destroyed crops and forced entire communities to relocate.</span></p><p class="p5"><span class="s1">"We hold grave fears for the people on these outer and remote islands," Oxfam executive director Helen <a href="http://www.ryot.org/vanuatu-cyclone-pam/925003"><span class="s3">Szoke said in a statement</span></a> after Cyclone Pam leveled Port Vila, Vanuatu, and displaced 3,300 people in March. "It's becoming increasingly clear that we are now dealing with worse than the worst case scenario in Vanuatu."</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">For these nations, the Paris conference took on an unprecedented urgency. In a meeting with President Obama, the Alliance of Small Island States pleaded for a treaty to limit worldwide global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. <a href="http://unfccc.int/resource/docs/2015/cop21/eng/l09r01.pdf"><span class="s2">The final agreement</span></a></span><span class="s4">,</span><span class="s1"> a historic deal between 195 countries, calls for a limit "well below" 2 degrees and asks governments to "pursue efforts" to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">"I think it's the game of negotiating," <a href="http://time.com/4143972/kiribati-climate-change-refugees-paris-sea-levels/"><span class="s2">Tong said at the conference</span></a>. "But for us it's not a game. It's a matter of survival."</span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">Bracing for the worst, several island nations are drawing up plans to relocate their entire populations to other countries. The cyclone displaced more than 3,000 people in Vanuatu.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">The situation in Fiji, however, is not looking much better.</span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">In Fiji, coastal homes have become routinely flooded during high tide, Attishay Prasad, a doctor with Fiji's Ministry of Health, told Business Insider. Saltwater is destroying sugar cane crops - a driving force of Fiji's economy - and people are contracting a host of water-borne diseases. </span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">"It's affecting us at every level of society," Prasad said.</span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">Worse yet, climate change is threatening Fiji's critical tourism industry, as resorts are having to undergo costly beach elevation projects.</span></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">"We see the change in front of our eyes," Prasad told Business Insider. "The beaches I used to play in as a child, they're permanently under water."</span></p><p class="p6"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/David Gray</span></p><p class="caption">Binata Pinata stands on top of a rock holding a fish her husband Kaibakia just caught off Bikeman islet, located off South Tarawa in the central Pacific island nation of Kiribati in this May 25, 2013 file photo</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p6"><span class="s1">Fiji, with its advantageous mountainous topography, is expected to become a hub for Pacific climate refugees, along with Australia and New Zealand, said Sarika Chand, communications consultant for the Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development at the University of the South Pacific.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">At least one village in Fiji <a href="http://www.unocha.org/top-stories/all-stories/fiji-building-resilience-face-climate-change"><span class="s2">has been entirely relocated already</span></a>, moving two miles inland, and more and more residents are flocking to the capital of Suva, which could lead to overcrowding in a city already strapped for resources, Prasad said.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">The Marshall Islands have been similarly impacted. </span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">Officials there declared a state of emergency in 2013 following a months-long drought that led to a drinking water shortage and severe crop damage. Less than a year later, a massive high tide swept through the capital of Majuro, forcing 600 people to evacuate. And in July, Typhoon Nangka tore roofs off Majuro houses and left half the island without power.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">The intensity and frequency of these weather events will only increase in the coming years, according to the UN report.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">Unlike Kiribati, The Marshall Islands are not yet considering a mass relocation as an option for its 70,000 people, according to deBrum.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">For the many Marshallese people abroad, all they can do is watch news updates with bated breath about the Islands.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">"The idea of our island going under water, it's kind of hard to think about," Benetick Maddison, a Marshallese student at Northwest Arkansas Community College and the educational activities coordinator for the Marshallese Education Initiative, told Business Insider. </span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">"We're not ready to see it go down under."</span></p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-hot-dogs-are-made-2015-12">You will never want to eat a hot dog again after watching how they're made</a></h3>        <div>            <div>        <div class="ooyala-video-player" data-video-autoplay="false" data-video-id="pic3dneTpblqUEi9x0I7qw3g7L_iRfhE" data-player-variable="ooyalapopvideo" id="ooyalaplayer_popvideo" style="width:1280px;height:720px"></div>        </div>        </div>            </div>

These island nations could be underwater in as little as fifty years

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Several emerging markets remain highly vulnerable to a large weather event turning into a natural disaster, according to a new report by the <keyword id="27263" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="risk">risk</keyword> analysis company </span><a href="%20http://maplecroft.com/about/news/nha_2013.html">Maplecroft</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p>And given that <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/science/climate_assessment_2012.html">NASA predicts</a> a future of increasingly extreme weather events, countries better get on it.</p>
<p>Maplecroft's 2013 Risk Atlas atlas ranks 197 countries on their physical and economic exposure to 12 different natural hazards (e.g. flooding, tropical cyclones, earthquakes), as well as their resilience to the socio-economic impacts of a destructive natural event.</p>
<p>The countries with high (but not extreme) resilience risk — i.e. those in which a natural hazard can quickly become a costly natural disaster — include several emerging markets in Asia: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China.</p>
<p>The analysis notes that China and the Philippines (followed by India and Indonesia) "have the most globally significant concentrations of economic assets exposed to major natural hazards."</p>
<p><div class="image-container" style="width:940px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source"><a href="http://maplecroft.com/">Maplecroft</a></p></div><span>"<strong>These countries are not only exposed to multiple devastating hazards, but lack resilience to the impacts and show a poor capacity to bounce back, which could undermine economic growth; disrupt business operations and supply chains</strong>," according to the analysis.</span></p>
<p>To demonstrate the impact of resilience, Maplecroft compares the effects of Hurricane Sandy hitting America's east coast and Typhoon Bopha hitting the <span>Philippines</span>.</p>
<p>Despite Sandy's strength and size, only 110 people died because the U.S. has a well developed infrastructure and communications networks in addition to sophisticated response protocols.</p>
<p>Typhoon Bopha, on the other hand, <span>resulted in more than 1,000 deaths even though fewer people were exposed to the storm’s path.</span></p>
<p>Furthermore, the U.S. federal government was able to authorize $51 billion in disaster relief despite Congress being in a deficit showdown.</p>
<p>So even though 2012 was the least deadly year for <keyword id="139159" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="natural-disasters">natural disasters</keyword> in the last decade — less than 10,000 people died worldwide — the <span>analysis recommends that governments, communities, and businesses actively invest in</span><span> disaster risk reduction as </span><span>emerging markets become increasingly integral to the <keyword id="23764" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="global">global</keyword> economy.</span></p>
<p>“With the increasing global economic importance of these nations and their interconnectivity to global markets, a major event in one these financial centers increases the risk of economic contagion,” Helen Hodge, Head of Maps and Indices at Maplecroft, said in a statement. “In particular, a limited resilience capacity to ‘bounce-back’ from disasters will amplify this risk and prolong economic down-time.”</p>
