It will make landfall as a 'severe cyclonic storm' with a wind speed of 100-110 kmh gusting to 120 kmh. The cyclonic storm is currently located 280 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa), 430km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 640 km south-southwest of Surat (Gujarat). What is Landfall? According to the US National Hurricane Center, “A Landfall is the intersection of the center of a tropical cyclone with a coastline.” In other words, landfall is when the eye of the cyclone move to land after being on the water. This does not mean that cyclone has ‘hit the land’ or arrived. The cyclone arrives hours before the landfall bringing rainfall and dust storms. A landfall often carries heavy winds, lashing rains, increasing sea level that can pose threat to people living in the neighbouring region. Hurricane or cyclone can start losing its energy and speed after hitting the land as they get energy from the warm ocean water. However, that doesn't happen so quickly. Often, the cyclone can move over to land, its wind field tends to increase. Thus, it can affect a larger area than what scientists may have calculated. A larger wind field along the coast results in storms and rising ocean waves. Here’s what a cyclone making ‘landfall’ means

At 5.30pm on Thursday ‘Fani’ was located at a distance of 320 km South from Puri. It hit Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali around Puri. The cyclone is expected to move towards West Bengal with a speed of 115 Kmph. Moreover, the cyclone is expected to move towards north-east region and emerge into Bangladesh on Saturday Evening, said IMD. Storm surge of about 1.5 metres height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha at the time of landfall.

 The affect of landfall has already begun. North Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are receiving light. The IMD said sea conditions are "very likely to be very rough" to high off north Tamilnadu, Puducherry, along and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till Friday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas. It warned that the cyclone is likely to cause damages to all types of houses, communication and power poles, road and rail infrastructure. The Odisha government said that around 900 cyclone shelters have been made ready to house the evacuees. "It is estimated that a total of 1150,000 people will have to be moved to safer areas, of which about 330,000 people have already been evacuated," a statement said.

 Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been put in place. Sinha directed establishment of a central toll free helpline for the general public and asked the Central ministries to set up control rooms to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The Civil Aviation Ministry informed that flight operations from Bhubaneswar were suspended from midnight of Thursday, while operations from Kolkata airport also will remain suspended from Friday morning until conditions improve. The railways have already suspended operations of trains in Odisha and all trains in Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section (of the Kolkata-Chennai route) has been cancelled till Saturday. A total of 140 trains including 83 passenger trains have been cancelled so far. The Indian Coast Guard and the Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief and rescue operations while the Army and Air Force units in the states have also been put on standby.

Bangladesh also named Cyclone Ockhi that caused severe damages in Kerala. The Cyclone Titli, that hit Andhra and some parts of Odisha last year was named by Pakistan.  The 40- feet- long “mobile water purification bus” started from the coastal town of Bhavnagar in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. It was indigenously developed by the Council of Science and Industrial Research. The bus contained an RO desalination and ultrafiltration plant. It also has a TFC membrane filtration that filters viruses and bacteria from the water. A similar bus was used to help the flood-affected Kerala. Cyclone Fani has been the strongest cyclone to hit India in 43 years. As many as 800,000 people were reportedly evacuated just before the cyclone made landfall in the eastern coast of India. The next morning we woke up to uprooted trees, a fallen boundary wall and water almost entering the house. But we were privileged and safe. In the building next to ours, an empty house that belonged to a relative, doors had been opened for about a hundred people from the nearby slums to take refuge. They spent the night with barely any candles left to light the entire house but were also witness to a woman giving birth. However, the capital city of Bhubaneswar and its twin city Cuttack were still not the high impact areas. The cyclone that lasted over 34 hours, found its major impact in the port city of Paradip and the districts of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada were among the worst affected. It destroyed over 25,000 houses, leaving the then Chief Minister of Odisha Giridhar Gamang also in <a href="https://frontline.thehindu.com/static/html/fl1624/16240220.htm">shock</a> as such devastation had not been seen. <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/supercyclone-rage-ravages-orissa-coast/cid/911868">Reports </a>suggested that the CM’s house was blocked with the fallen trees while the state secretariat too went without electricity for days. Odisha was hit for 30 hours by a super cyclone two decades ago that killed 10,000. However, a million people were saved through mass evacuation, said the report. India has a cyclone season that generally starts in April and lasts till December. The season bounds tens of thousands of people to evacuate from their home leaving severe damages to infrastructure. Both India and Bangladesh have witnessed deaths and damages to crop and property.

In fact, severe cyclones like Fani — although they can form at any time — normally occur in November, once the monsoon season is over. In fact, looking at cyclonic storms that have hit the Bay of Bengal between 1965 to 2017, only two of 46 ‘severe’ storms occurred in April.

 The head of the Indian Meteorological Department told <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/fani-is-indias-strongest-april-cyclone-in-43-years-say-meteorologists/article26995965.ece">The Hindu</a>, “This is a cyclone that’s forming due to the warming of the Bay of Bengal basin…with global warming we have to be prepared for such occurrences and take precaution accordingly.” Cyclone Fani is shaping up to be the biggest storm to hit the Bay of Bengal since 2008 according to the <a href="https://weather.com/en-IN/india/news/news/2019-04-30-cyclone-fani-live-extremely-severe-storm-odisha-west-bengal">Weather Channel.</a> And, it’s heading towards the state of Odisha at 190 kilometers per hour. Sarat Chandra Sahu, the Director of the Center for Environment and Climate at the SOA University told <a href="https://indiaclimatedialogue.net/2018/10/17/cyclones-buffet-odisha-as-temperatures-rise/">indiaclimatedialogue</a>, “Because of global warming, sea surface temperature remains higher in the Bay of Bengal leading to generation and intensification of cyclonic systems. The southern coasts of Odisha experience cyclonic storms more frequently since Phailin cyclone of 2013.”

 Ajay Singh, a climate change researcher with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, agrees in his study published in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212670812000437#">Science Direct</a> stating, “Overall, the impact of global warming on the climate of India is clearly visible in the form of increased frequency and intensity of most of the extreme weather events.” The Indian Ocean, in particular has been warming faster than any tropical region on the planet over the past century according to the <a href="http://www.climate.rocksea.org/research/indian-ocean-warming/">Climate Research Lab</a> in IIT Madras . And, so it ends up that the Indian Ocean is also the largest contributor to global ocean surface warming.

Cyclone Fani and the impact of global warming captured by NASA

The cyclone had moved close to north coastal Andhra before it made landfall in neighbouring Odisha. 12.30pm West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said the state was prepared to combat the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani that is likely to affect six southern districts, while urging people to stay alert and not to panic. The cyclone made landfall on neighbouring Odisha's eastern coast on Friday morning. Despite extensive damage caused by near 200 kmph winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall, no loss of life has been reported so far. A similar cyclone, but much more destructive, with a wind speed of 300 miles per hour had struck Odisha.  The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) is on high alert to render necessary humanitarian assistance, a Navy spokesperson said on Tuesday. Indian Naval ships at Visakhapatnam and Chennai are on stand-by to proceed to the most affected areas to undertake Humanitarian Aid Distress Relief (HADR), evacuation, logistic support including providing medical aid. These ships are embarked with additional divers, doctors, inflatable rubber boats and relief material that include food, tents, clothes, medicines and blankets. Naval aircraft are also on stand-by at the Naval Air Stations INS Rajali at Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu and INS Dega at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to undertake reconnaissance, rescue, casualty evacuation and air drop of relief material to the stranded if required, the spokesperson added. The ENC is closely monitoring the developments in the Bay of Bengal and Flag Officer Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA) and Naval Officers-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh) and (Odisha) are in constant communication with respective state administrations.
