<p>Vox's CEO <keyword id="1934994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jim-Bankoff">Jim Bankoff</keyword> and Curb's founder Lockhart Steele spoke about their new marriage today at Business Insider's IGNITION conference with Business Insider's CEO Henry Blodget.</p>
<p>The theme? Will digital media companies like Vox, Gawker, BuzzFeed, and Business Insider ever start consolidating into big conglomerates like a new-age Time Inc.?</p>
<p>That seems to be the emerging trend, at least. </p>
<p>Bankoff seems to think so, but his answer as to how that will happen wasn't what you'd expect. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He focused on the technology that powers <keyword id="1753500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vox-Media">Vox media</keyword> sites. Each site may look different to the user, but the back end is powered by something called Chorus, a platform for uploading content and ads to Vox media sites.</span></p>
<p>"Silicon Valley VCs like us because we're using technology," Bankoff said. "In Silicon Valley they celebrate hacker culture. Media is the same thing. Give them the environment and platform to make great things."</p>

The Future Of Digital Media Will Feel More Like Silicon Valley Than Time Inc.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="caption">Lockart Steele, on right, at Business Insider's SA 100 party.</p></div><p></p></div></div><keyword id="1753500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vox-Media">Vox Media</keyword>, the parent company of SB Nation and The Verge, has acquired Lockhart Steele's media network, Curbed for $20 - 30 million.</p>
<p>Curbed was founded in 2005 by Steele who was the former managing editor of Gawker. Its flagship vertical covered real-estate. The network now also includes Racked (a style and retail publication) and Eater (a food and dining publication). There are 50 employees at Curbed Network.</p>
<p>One source says Curbed's revenue is in the high single-digit millions. Steele and his co-founders will remain at Vox after the transition is complete; Steele will remain the network's Editor-in-Chief. The acquisition is in the mid-$20 million range; the deal was a mix of cash and stock.</p>
<p>When asked why he's interested in a local play like Curbed, which is published in 32 cities, Vox CEO Jim Bankoff replied, "It's not a local play.  These are huge mainstream consumer categories: food/dining, home/real estate, style/retail are among the most popular cable networks and tv shows, magazines, etc .... yet who really owns the categories from a digital media perspective, especially among rich young adults online?"</p>
<p>Through the acquisition, Vox is now in six of the biggest consumer lifestyle categories, including sports, technology, dining and real-estate. Vox will continue to grow Curbed on the local level but it will also invest in national editions of its properties.</p>

Vox Has Acquired Lockhart Steele's Curbed Network For $20 - 30 Million In Cash And Stock

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Larry Creel, a partner and portfolio manager at Edgewood Management, is selling his swanky New York City apartment for $6.5 million, <a href="http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/12/10/one_of_wall_streets_biggest_party_animals_lists_designer_pad.php">according to Curbed.com</a>.</p>
<p>Creel brought in French interior designer Jean Louise Deniot to renovate the 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom apartment, and is trying to sell it for almost double the $3.5 million he paid for it in 2012.</p>
<p>The apartment features coffered ceilings, custom flooring, and tree-lined views onto East 72nd Street.</p>

HOUSE OF THE DAY: Hedge Funder Is Selling His Swanky Upper East Side Apartment For $6.5 Million

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">A gorgeous penthouse in Manhattan's Greenwich village <a href="http://curbed.com/archives/2014/11/21/40m-delos-apartment-reduced-price.php">just dropped its price from $50 million to $39.8 million</a>, according to Curbed.com.</span></p>
<p>The 7,700 square foot apartment occupies the top 3 floors of a former dress factory. Its f<span>our bedrooms and four and a half baths offer a huge amount of livable space for its location in the middle of Lower Manhattan. And celebs like, Deepak Chopra and Leonardo DiCaprio would be your neighbors.</span></p>
<p>The building has been renovated in accordance with Delos Building Wellness' WELL Building Standard, which Chopra serves on the board of.  All six of the apartments in the building include anti-microbial countertops, nightlights that won't mess with your circadian rhythms, and showers infused with vitamin C to balance the chlorine.</p>
<p>Dolly Lenz <a href="http://www.dollylenz.com/property/ny/manhattan/10003/central-village/66-east-11th-street-ph/5429643abb975217ac00007a/">has the listing</a>.</p>

HOUSE OF THE DAY: A $40 Million Manhattan Penthouse Specially Designed To 'Improve Wellness'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Gilbert Arenas hasn't played for the Washington Wizards since 2010, but <a href="http://dc.curbed.com/archives/2014/10/gilbert-jay-arenas-great-falls-home-under-contract-for-28m.php">he just sold his house in D.C. for $2.5 million</a>, according to Curbed.com.</p>
<p>Arenas put the house on the market two years ago for $3.5 million, and the home would just not sell. Since the house first went on sale, it has seen some renovations, like the removal of a giant built-in shark tank in one of the rooms.</p>
<p>The house has 7 bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms, a gym, and a movie theater. Perhaps the best part of the property is the backyard which has a pool with a slide and a grotto with a full wet bar. </p>

Former NBA Star Gilbert Arenas Finally Sells DC Mansion For $2.8 Million After Removing A Giant Shark Tank

<p>The buyer is reportedly CBS President and CEO Les Moonves. </p>
<p>Allen <a href="http://pagesix.com/2014/04/11/les-moonves-buys-paul-allens-mansion-on-billionaires-beach/">paid $25 million</a> for the gorgeous white-walled contemporary home in 2010, though he apparently spent little time there since the sound of the ocean kept him up at night, a source told <a href="http://pagesix.com/2014/04/11/les-moonves-buys-paul-allens-mansion-on-billionaires-beach/">the Post</a>. He "<span>hated the sound of the ocean," the source said.</span></p>
<p>The house is located on Malibu's ultra-pricey Carbon Beach, a stretch of oceanfront property that's been dubbed "Billionaire's Beach" for its many high-profile residents. David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Eli Broad, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/larry-ellison-real-estate-2014-3#">Larry Ellison</a> all own property here, with Ellison owning as many as a dozen. </p>

Paul Allen Reportedly Sold His $28 Million Malibu Home Because He 'Hated The Sound Of The Ocean' 

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:401px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">Redfin via Curbed/Getty Images</p></div>After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lance-armstrong-sold-his-texas-home-2013-4">reportedly selling his house for much less than the $10 million asking price last week</a>, <keyword id="17998" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lance-Armstrong">Lance Armstrong</keyword> <a href="http://curbed.com/archives/2013/04/17/embattled-cyclist-lance-armstrong-buys-lake-austin-estate.php">has scooped up a $4.3 million home in Austin</a>, according to Curbed.com.</p>
<p>The home sits on 3.6 acres of property which extends to Lake Austin.</p>
<p>The entire compound, which consists of four separate buildings, is 12,500 square feet and was designed by Arthur Andersson, a local architect.</p>

Lance Armstrong Just Bought A $4.3 Million Home In Austin

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:402px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">Getty Images</p></div>Yankees outfielder <keyword id="1744534" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ichiro-Suzuki">Ichiro Suzuki</keyword> <a href="http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2013/05/02/ichiro_suzuki_rents_23500month_pad_on_central_park_north.php">is renting an apartment on Central Park North in Harlem</a> for $23,500 a month, according to Curbed.com.</p>
<p>The New York Post reported that both Yankee stars <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/realestate/residential/up_for_grabs_xagNQjggyyc2B1M37PrtMP">Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez looked into buying the place for $9 million</a>, but Ichiro ended up scooping it up for rent.</p>
<p>The apartment is 5,400 square feet and has six bedrooms and 6 and a half bathrooms.</p>
<p>It also has 100 feet of outdoor terraces and a beautiful view of NYC's Central Park.</p>

Ichiro Suzuki Is Renting A $23,500 Per Month Apartment With Gorgeous Views Of Central Park

It recently announced the launch of a new website, Vox.com, led by prominent reporter Ezra Klein, and it's starting to beef up Curbed Network, an acquisition Vox Media made last November.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Curbed site Eater.com is a local restaurant guide that's now branching out into full-on restaurant reviews site. Eater has hired former Bloomberg writer Ryan Sutton to be its New York food critic. The Village Voice's Robert Sietsema is also joining Eater as an ethnic food critic in New York. In addition, Atlanta Magazine's Bill Addison is joining Eater as a Restaurant Editor, flying around the country to review the best places to dine. Eater generates about 2 million of Vox Media's 45 million monthly uniques, according to ComScore. </span></p>
<p>We caught up with Jim Bankoff, CEO and Chairman of Vox Media, about his company and the digital industry industry. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Below is the lightly edited Q&amp;A with Bankoff.</span></p>
<p><strong>Business Insider: You were an AOL executive who co-founded entertainment site TMZ. Now you run Vox, which has completely different, more serious content than the gossip site. Why the 180 in your career?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Jim Bankoff: </strong>It's important to note that TMZ was a joint venture between AOL and Time Warner Telepictures. The other thing to be clear about is that it was really Harvey Levin who ran the editorial direction and who made TMZ what it was and what it still does to this day. </p>
<p>While sure, the Vox properties don't do anything remotely close to what TMZ does, what we have in common is we believed (when I joined Vox) that publishing was changing. It was becoming more social. It was becoming more real-time, personality and voice-driven. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">TMZ is certainly all of those things. </span></p>
<p><strong>Business Insider: Vox sites don't do slideshows, listicles, or punchy headlines. How does that affect traffic? How much social traffic does Vox Media get?</strong></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>JB:</strong> We get a lot of social referral traffic. Like most publishers, it's a high-growth part of what we're doing. We think it's great. A saying around here is "substance is viral." People are sharing our stuff on Facebook and LinkedIn. <span>We really pride ourselves on being able to convert that social traffic over time.</span></span></p>
<p>What we don't try to do is game the algorithm. We didn't do that in search and we don't do that in social. Having said that, word of mouth or social media is critical. It's an important part of being relevant. We believe whole-heartedly in not gaming it or dumbing our content down. Ultimately, we think Facebook and Twitter as platforms don't believe in that either. Success will be found by companies creating the best stuff, not those who are doing something artificial to change that. </p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Business Insider: What's Vox Media's traffic like?</strong></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>JB:</strong> Traffic is booming across all of our verticals. In 2013 we were the fastest-growing publisher across the ComScore 100. </span></p>

Curbed.com's traffic also increased from December to January. The Verge's traffic dipped from 10 million uniques in December to 8 million uniques in January; other Vox properties fell during those months as well. But over the course of the year, all of Vox's media is trending up nicely.</span></em></span></em></p>
<p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: Vox Media has raised $61.1 million. That's more than Business Insider ($30.6 million), Gawker (bootstrapped), and BuzzFeed ($46.3 million). Does that ever worry you and is it necessary?</span></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">JB: </span></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>We think the biggest media companies of this generation are being built right now. Every generation has its own set of brands on mediums that are built specifically for them: magazine brands, TV brands, and now Interactive brands. We're building them across several consumer verticals. We want to make sure we take full-advantage of that opportunity. We're not the only ones who want to build the biggest media site for this generation.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One could argue there hasn't been enough investment in creating this opportunity across the industry.
