The <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> government's health department has increased surveillance in several villages of <keyword id="19915273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coimbatore" source="keywords">Coimbatore</keyword> District against the spread of the dreaded <keyword id="21571718" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="West-Nile-Virus" source="keywords">West Nile Virus</keyword> and deployed 12 <keyword id="21617462" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobile-Medical-Teams" source="keywords">Mobile Medical Teams</keyword> (MMT) to screen people in 12 blocks. This is following many districts of <keyword id="19896018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala" source="keywords">Kerala</keyword> reporting cases of the West Nile Virus, which is a <keyword id="21363821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-borne-disease" source="keywords">mosquito-borne disease</keyword>. The Coimbatore District Health Department has deployed 12 Mobile Medical Teams (MMT) to screen people with fever and influenza in 12 blocks to check whether they are infected with the virus. The disease is spread through the <keyword id="21617463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Culex-mosquitoes" source="keywords">Culex mosquitoes</keyword> and the symptoms are high fever, stiff neck, headache, disorientation, stupor, tremors, convulsions and muscle weakness. In some cases, it even leads to coma, paralysis and death. Dr R Ramanandan, Professor of Microbiology in a private medical college in Coimbatore told IANS, "West Nile Virus is a dangerous disease and proper medication has to be given to the patients at the earliest to prevent their condition from deteriorating. If the patient is not treated on time it can lead to paralysis and even death." Deputy Director of Health Services, Dr P Aruna told IANS that the department has accelerated the screening of patients with fever in Coimbatore District after one person died and many were hospitalised in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur districts of Kerala. The state health department has also sent circulars to all the district health officers to conduct screening for the West Nile Virus in patients who undergo checks for fever in Primary Health Centres in the state.

But you can still protect yourself from mosquito bites. They also recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing that covers the arms and legs, screening open windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from coming inside, and using air conditioning when possible. ICMR scientists have flagged presence of another Chinese virus called 'Cat Que Virus', which has a "potential" to cause disease in India, even as it grapples with the Covid pandemic. CQV can cause febrile illnesses, meningitis and paediatric encephalitis in humans. According to the seven researchers at the Indian Council of Medical Research's National Institute of Virology in Pune, the presence of Cat Que Virus in Culex mosquitoes and pigs has been reported in China and Vietnam. They added that due to the spread of similar species of the Culex mosquitoes in India, there is a need to understand the replication kinetics of this virus. The researchers said that the presence in Culex mosquitoes in China and pigs in Vietnam suggested susceptibility of Asian countries to CQV. The scientists discovered antibodies for the tropical virus in two out of the 883 human serum samples tested across states. It indicates that these two people were infected with the virus at some point of time. It was not found in any of the human at the time of study. "Anti-CQV IgG antibody positivity in human serum samples tested and the replication capability of CQV in mosquitoes indicated a possible disease causing potential of CQV in Indian scenario. Screening of more human and swine serum samples using these assays is required as a proactive measure for understanding prevalence of this neglected tropical virus,a the research published in Indian Journal of Medical Research in June stated. In Indian context, "data showed that mosquitoes such as Ae. aegypti, Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. Tritaeniorhynchus were susceptible to CQV. Thus, mosquitoes were found to be a potential vector for CQV transmission to mammalian hosts", a scientist stated. According to the apex research body, domestic pigs are the primary mammalian host of CQV and antibodies against the virus have been reported in swine reared locally in China, indicating that CQV has formed a natural cycle in local areas. --IANS aka/in

But scientists are exploring the idea that&#xa0;the virus could spread via a far more common species called the Culex quinquefasciatus, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-zika-brazil-idUSKCN0W52AW">Reuters reports</a>.Culex quinquefasciatus is 20 times more common than Aedes aegypti in Brazil.Once infected with Zika, only a small proportion of people ever show&#xa0;<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/zika/symptoms/index.html">symptoms</a>, which most commonly include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes. There is no vaccine or&#xa0;treatment available for the virus. Zika poses a big concern because of its connections with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-microcephaly-2016-2">birth defects</a>&#xa0;in babies whose mothers have had Zika symptoms&#xa0;and a neurological condition called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-guillain-barre-syndrome-2016-2">Guillain-Barré Syndrome</a>.To find out if this other, more common mosquito species could carry Zika, researchers injected 200 of them with the virus. And it did, which means it's possible that could happen outside the lab as well.Their next step is to take a look at the culex mosquitoes already circulating in areas with Zika and see if they are also carrying the virus.&#xa0;If&#xa0;so, it could make the situation much&#xa0;worse.&#xa0;The bug is a <a href="http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/aquatic/southern_house_mosquito.htm">subtropical species</a>, with a range as far north as Virginia and covering most of central and South America. They're active in the night, as opposed to Aedes aegypti that's a daytime biter.
