Juspay processes payments for companies like Amazon, Swiggy, MakeMyTrip among others. The leaked data is in the form of a data dump and has been leaked through a compromised server of Juspay. Juspay has <a href="https://juspayproducts.medium.com/your-security-is-our-first-concern-8d98c96e5f17">confirmed</a> the data leak in its official blog post, outlining the details of the breach. “It pains us to inform you that a data breach did happen on 18th August 2020. Non-sensitive masked card information, mobile numbers and email ids of a subset of our users were compromised,” the company said. Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia discovered the data breach. He found that the data dump was available for sale on the dark web. Speaking to Business Insider, Rajaharia noted that this data breach could be a lot more serious if the hackers figure out the encryption algorithm used to hash card numbers. Here’s what was leaked in the <keyword id="10538684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Juspay-Data-Breach">Juspay data breach</keyword> As per Juspay, the leaked information includes non-sensitive masked card information, mobile numbers and email IDs of a subset of users. The company has said that the leaked information does not include full card numbers, order information, card PIN or password. The data on the dark web includes information such as the bank that has issued the card, card expiry date, the last four digits of the card, masked card number, card type and the user’s name, among other details. Should you be worried? Rajaharia pointed out that there could be a major risk to users if the algorithm used to hash card numbers is leaked or if the hackers figure it out on their own. A hash is a unique and fixed-length string that is mapped to a set of data. In this case, Juspay has hashed the 16-digit debit and credit card numbers in order to process transactions. If hackers can figure out the algorithm used to generate these hashes, they could use brute force and find out what the original card numbers are. Juspay has masked only six digits out of sixteen-digit card numbers. Rajaharia says that while this is good, the safety of users rests primarily on the hashing algorithm. Scammers could also exploit this data leak In addition to the risks mentioned above, Rajaharia also pointed out that scammers could exploit this data leak to dupe cardholders. Since the leak includes mobile numbers, they could call unsuspecting cardholders and trick them into revealing the full card numbers, PIN, CVV as well as one-time passwords. Rajaharia also pointed out that since these users are paying customers, they are a lot more valuable than non-paying customers. A report by Singapore-based security firm <a href="https://www.group-ib.com/media/india-banks-cards/">Group IB</a> claims that the payment details were up for sale on Joker’s Stash — a secretive portal on the dark web for hackers to sell card dumps. “The underground market value of the database is estimated at more than $4.2 million,” said the report stating that each card was being sold for $9 apiece. The 461,976 payment records include exposed card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV codes. Others have additional information like cardholders’ full names, emails, phone numbers and addresses. The data can be used to make fraudulent transactions, especially if the accompanying phone numbers is included. The cybersecurity firm was unable to determine the source of the leak. However, they have passed on the information to India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) so that they can take the necessary steps. The database is named “INDIA-BIG-MIX” and was uploaded on 5 February 2020. How to stop your debit/credit card information from reaching the dark web

The Atlanta-based fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A is working with IT security companies after a possible data breach may have leaked the credit-card details of 9,000 customers.

<a href="http://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/12/banks-card-breach-at-some-chick-fil-as/">Security reporter Brian Krebs says evidence of a data breach</a> first began emerging in November. But banks started to pay attention in December when a credit-card association sent out an alert claiming that a breach may have started as early as September.
If there has been a data breach, it is probably not going to be on the scale of Target's,&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-target-credit-card-hack-backoff-affects-1000-other-businesses-2014-8">which last year leaked millions of credit-card numbers online</a>. Because the levels of unusual activity are still relatively low, it's more likely to be a regional issue in which a third-party contractor was hacked into, exposing credit-card information for a set of Chick-Fil-A restaurants.
In a statement to Krebs, Chick-Fil-A confirmed that it was investigating whether a data breach had taken place:
Chick-fil-A recently received reports of potential unusual activity involving payment cards used at a few of our restaurants. We take our obligation to protect customer information seriously, and we are working with leading IT security firms, law enforcement and our payment industry contacts to determine all of the facts.
We want to assure our customers we are working hard to investigate these events and will share additional facts as we are able to do so. If the investigation reveals that a breach has occurred, customers will not be liable for any fraudulent charges to their accounts - any fraudulent charges will be the responsibility of either Chick-fil-A or the bank that issued the card. On Tuesday Apple showed off a killer new app for the iPhone 6: the ability to use your phone like a credit card to pay for things.
How safe is that?
After all, only a week ago Apple's iCloud was implicated <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-apple-will-fix-icloud-in-ios-8-2014-9">when nude photos of celebrities were leaked online</a>. Apple said its cloud servers themselves weren't hacked, but it also admitted that "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-statement-on-icloud-hack-2014-9">certain celebrity accounts were compromised</a>."
There's been lots of theories as to how the hackers compromised those accounts, and if Apple shoulders some responsibility. Apple IDs seem to be easy to crack <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-underground-icloud-hacking-ring-that-leaked-naked-celebrity-photos-2014-9">if you have the right tools</a>.
So what has Apple done to ensure it can keep your credit card safe should you choose to turn your phone into a credit card?
There are several answers.
No. 1: Apple is not using iCloud to store your credit card numbers at all. They are stored encrypted, in a special highly secure spot on your phone:
With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in iPhone. These numbers are never stored on Apple servers.
No 2: Apple isn't storing details about your purchases, either.
Apple Pay does keep a list of your most recent purchases in the Passbook app, however. Passbook does save some data to iCloud by default. It's not clear if the data about your purchases will be stored on iCloud, but Apple isn't collecting transaction details like your credit card.
No 3: Apple Pay is only available on the iPhone 6 and is tied to the fingerprint scanner.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, CEO Tim Cook said celebrities' iCloud accounts were compromised when hackers correctly answered security questions and were able to get their passwords that way, or when they were tricked into revealing their user IDs and passwords in other ways.
The fingerprint scanner gets rid of the need for a password. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-5s-fingerprint-scanner-hacked-2013-9">While security researchers have been able to hack the fingerprint scanner</a>, it's a fairly involved process, not something a hacker can pull off from afar.
No 4: Your iPhone never even gives the store your actual credit card number.
That could be safer. Just this week Home Depot admitted that hackers planted malware at its stores and were able to steal credit card info that way, as people used cards to pay for things.
With Apple Pay, Apple says:
... when you make a purchase, the Device Account Number alongside a transaction-specific dynamic security code is used to process your payment. So your actual credit or debit card numbers are never shared with merchants or transmitted with payment.

How Apple Will Protect Your Credit Cards When Using Apple Pay

It is hard to believe that your personal data, be it your residential address, your phone number, email id, details of what you bought online, age, marital status, income and profession is all up for sale but that’s not it. Most of this is sold for less thasn a rupee. 
 
ET reported that the data is sod anywhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 for the personal data of up to 1 lakh people in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bengaluru&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bengaluru</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hyderabad&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Hyderabad</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a>. 
 
The lists up for sale are creative and granular. One data broker said he could get lists of high net worth individuals, salaried people, credit card holders, car owners and retired women in any given vicinity. 
 Some brokers sent free samples: excel sheets with personal data of people in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, split by address and income profiles. “It’s scary to say the least,” said Hyderabad-based Rajashekar, whose data like name, address and credit card ownership was procured from a Gurgaon-based data broker who sold ET a sample database of nearly 3,000 people with <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6357149" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword> credit cards. 
 
The database had details like name, address, phone number and the classification of the card (debit, credit or a premium card). The broker also said that a database of 1.7 lakh people from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a>, NCR and Bengaluru can be made available for Rs 7,000. 
 
“It should be deemed as a crime. Without my permission, how can someone trade information related to me?” said Bengaluru-based Nagaraj BK, who was appalled that details of his purchase of a gas stove on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=eBay&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">eBay</a> were procured by ET as part of a free sample. 
 However, eBay said it takes data security and privacy of buyers and sellers on its platform very seriously. An <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> spokesperson said the company was not aware of any data leak or any data being sold from their end, adding that any such case brought to their notice will be dealt with strictly to ensure customer data protection. 
 
The obvious question to ask is: where are these brokers getting the data from? “Most of the data is sold to us by mobile service providers, agents from hospitals and banks, loan agents, car dealers,” Rajesh, an executive from an NCR-based data broker, told ET.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">David Slotnick/Business Insider</div></div></div><ul><li>JPMorgan Chase is cutting back on the benefits of its wildly popular Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.</li><li>According to a leaked internal document, the company is eliminating price protection, limiting the number of guests cardholders can take to a Priority Pass airport lounge, and eliminating accelerated earning on travel purchases that go toward the annual $300 travel credit.</li><li>The changes are set to take place August 26.</li></ul>Changes are coming later this year to the wildly popular Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, cutting the value of some of its perks.Details started to trickle out online Friday from customers who had heard the company was planning reductions to three of the premium travel card's suite of benefits.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Facebook</div></div></div>An internal document leaked over the weekend on the website <a href="https://www.doctorofcredit.com/negative-changes-coming-to-chase-sapphire-reserve-no-more-3x-on-300-travel-priority-pass-limited-to-two-guests-price-protection-removal/">Doctor of Credit</a> detailed the looming changes: <ul><li>Elimination of price protection on purchases. Previously, <a href="https://www.chase.com/card-benefits/sapphirereserve/purchase">customers could get a refund of up to $500 per item</a> - up to $2,500 per year - if the price dropped in the 90 days following the purchase.</li><li>Limiting the number of guests a cardholder can bring to a Priority Pass lounge to two. Previously, the complimentary Priority Pass membership allowed cardholders to bring an unlimited number of guests to the more than 1,200 lounges in the program. Authorized users also get two guests, but any additional guests will cost $27 each. </li><li>Eliminating accelerated earning on travel purchases that go toward the annual $300 travel credit. All travel and dining purchases had received 3x in Ultimate Rewards points. This slight tweak means only travel purchases above and beyond the $300 annual travel credit earn Ultimate Rewards points. That's a reduction in 900 Ultimate Rewards points, which is worth $13.50 when cashed in through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. </li></ul>A Chase spokesman confirmed the authenticity of the document, which says customers were set to be notified this month, while the changes will go into effect August 26."We are always evaluating our products to offer the right mix of rewards, benefits, and experiences that provide the most value to our customers - and those they tell us they value most," the company said in a statement to Business Insider. However, its profitability has come under question, with some analysts estimating the card <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-06/dimon-says-new-card-cuts-profit-by-up-to-300-million-in-quarter?utm_source=Triggermail&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Post%20Blast%20%28bii-payments%29:%20Sapphire%20Reserve%20card%20good%20for%20consumers%2C%20but%20not%20JPMorgan%20%E2%80%94%20Uber%20and%20Barclaycard%20to%20launch%20credit%20card%20%E2%80%94%20Starbucks%20works%20on%20AI&amp;utm_term=BII%20List%20Payments%20ALL">wouldn't be profitable for several years</a>. At its investor day earlier this year, JPMorgan said it lost $900 million in 2017 from "card headwinds," which it attributed to the Sapphire Reserve and "other notable items," according <a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/corporate/investor-relations/document/3cea4108_strategic_update.pdf">to a company presentation.</a> But it also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chase-sapphire-reserve-is-jpmorgans-gateway-drug-2018-2">revealed that the card cleared a crucial hurdle</a>, with 90% of Sapphire Reserve customers renewing and ponying up for the $450 annual fee. It said it expected headwinds to reverse in 2018. "These Sapphire Reserve customers ... are not only profitable as a single product relationship, but they are an extremely attractive base into which we will deepen. And we are seeing an impressive more than 90% renewal rate for these cards," CFO Marianne Lake said during the presentation.Given the enthusiasm and positive messaging from Chase, why devalue the benefits?It's unclear what exactly prompted the changes, or how much money Chase stands to save from them. They're not without industry precedent, however. Priority Pass lounges have become saturated with visitors following the complimentary access granted by cards like the Sapphire Reserve as well as the American Express Platinum, and the Citi Prestige, according to a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-airport-lounge-once-a-refuge-is-a-total-zoo-1525106268">recent report from The Wall Street Journal</a>.American Express and Citi do not offer unlimited Priority Pass guest access like the Sapphire Reserve does, so the change is in keeping with competitors in the premium credit card space. Eliminating price protection could amount to considerable savings, given that customers could receive up to $2,500 in refunds out of Chase's pocket annually. Again, it's unclear how many people actually took advantage of this perk or how much it was costing Chase, but tech apps like Earny and Sift have emerged in recent years that automatically track your purchases and file refund claims on your behalf, streamlining and simplifying the process. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>In late September, crowdfunding site Patreon was hacked, and large amounts of internal data was leaked online.Opportunist scammers are now attempting to take advantage of this and blackmail users affected by the breach, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/21/extortionists-are-threatening-to-release-patreon-user-data/">according to TechCrunch</a>.Posting on Twitter over the weekend, cartoonist Steve Streza says that "everyone whose data got leaked when [Patreon] got hacked is getting extortion emails for bitcoin this morning."The email Streza received from the would-be blackmailer claims that they "have your tax id [sic], tax forms, SSN, DOB, Name, Address, Credit card details and more sensitive data." The extorter then threatens to leak this data online unless the victim sends them a bitcoin ransom.Bitcoin - a kind of digital currency - is a popular choice for cybercrime because it is anonymous, with no easy way to link a bitcoin "wallet" with its owner's true identity.<div></div>Patreon CEO Jack Conte urges customers to ignore the extortion attempt, claiming the scammer is lying about the kind of data they have. "I learned yesterday evening that some Patreon users have been receiving a scam email," he said in a statement. "The sender claims to have the recipient's SSN, credit card number and other personal information. I want to assure everyone that the claims in this email are false, and we are already working with federal law enforcement."Do not reply to the email-it is a scam. The tax forms we store are securely encrypted with RSA 2048-bit encryption, and we do not store full credit card numbers. If you receive this email I suggest you flag it as spam and ignore any further emails. Do not reply."Additionally, TechCrunch's John Biggs - a Patreon user himself - says he received the email. The bitcoin address that the scammer asks for ransoms to be paid for is apparently not unique (despite what the email claims), and has been sent almost nothing. A <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ashley-madison-second-user-data-release-2015-8">subsequent leak</a> - which was over twice the size -contained more internal company documents and emails. According to The Times, <a href="http://www.relate.org.uk/">Relate</a>, a relationship counselling service based in Britain, has started receiving calls from distressed spouses who have discovered their partner's information in the data leak. Denise Knowles, a counsellor at Relate, said that the leak had brought up "lots of difficult emotions" for the partners of those with an Ashley Madison account. "Even if you haven't been directly affected, the coverage may have prompted you to start questioning your own relationship," she said.Chris Longbottom, a lawyer at Schoosmiths, told the The Times that "[w]e are absolutely expecting more people to get in touch now that the [leaked details] are out there." Some law firms have been receiving up to three calls a day because of the leak. Ashley Madison may also be in line for some hefty legal action with Luke Scanlon, a lawyer for Pinsent Masons, predicting that Avid Life Media, the owners of the site, could face up to £1 billion ($1.5 billion) in legal fees if users choose to sue.
