<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">AP</p></div>As Business Insider first reported yesterday, <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> has <a href="https://bluefinlabs.com/blog/2013/02/05/bluefin-labs-joins-twitter-getting-to-the-future-of-social-tv-faster/">bought Bluefin Labs</a>, the Cambridge, Mass.-based maker of tools for measuring the impact of social media on TV viewing.</p>
<p>Twitter COO Ali Rowghani <a href="http://blog.twitter.com/2013/02/Welcome-Bluefin-Labs.html">said in a blog post</a> that it would honor Bluefin's existing contracts, but focus development on an existing partnership with Nielsen, the dominant TV-ratings player.</p>
<p>Twitter is keeping Bluefin and <keyword id="1772698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crashlytics">Crashlytics</keyword>, another Boston-area startup it recently bought, in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-just-bought-two-boston-startups-in-the-same-building-one-kendall-square-2013-2">One Kendall Square</a>—a local startup hub that both happened to occupy.</p>
<p>We're hearing that the total purchase price for the two startups may be more than $200 million. Twitter and Bluefin have not disclosed the deal terms.</p>

Twitter Confirms Its Purchase Of Bluefin Labs

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/54459164@N00/6775686367/">Johnson Cameraface</a></p></div><keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, the global network for short bursts of information, is </span><a href="http://www.crashlytics.com/blog/crashlytics-is-joining-forces-with-twitter/">buying a startup</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, <keyword id="1772698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crashlytics">Crashlytics</keyword>, that tracks when bad code causes apps to fail abruptly.</span></p>
<p>Notably, it appears to be leaving Crashlytics alone. TechCrunch <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/28/twitter-acquires-crash-reporting-tool-crashalytics-development-of-the-product-will-continue-unabated/">reports</a> that Twitter is not relocating the team from Cambridge, Mass. to Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, and allowing it to continue to serve other customers like Yelp and Waze.</p>
<p>Twitter uses Crashlytics in its own app, as well as <keyword id="1535994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vine">Vine</keyword>, a recently launched app for sharing short, simply edited videos.</p>
<p>Which brings us to an interesting point: Is Twitter changing its <keyword id="30334" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="acquisition">acquisition</keyword> strategy?</p>
<p>Twitter has primarily bought pieces of its own ecosystem, bringing in-house functions previously developed by third-party developers. Summize, a search engine for tweets, and Tweetie, the basis of Twitter's iPhone client, are prominent examples. Those deals have been largely successful, allowing Twitter users to find tweets and use Twitter-branded <keyword id="383661" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mobile-Apps">mobile apps</keyword>.</p>
<p>It has also bought startups for their talent. Mixer Labs, a location-software startup; Posterous, a blogging platform akin to Tumblr; and Bagcheck, a list-sharing site, are two examples. Those results have been more mixed:</p>

<p>With Crashlytics and Vine, Twitter is setting a new pattern: Buying startups and leaving them alone to develop products in Twitter's safe nest.</p>
<p>The model here is Google's acquisition of Android and YouTube, which it ran for years as standalone divisions.</p>
<p>Twitter's motives may vary deal by deal. As a Crashlytics customer, it may not have wanted the startup to end up in the hands of hostile rivals like Google or Facebook, who surely wouldn't mind learning about the ins and outs of Twitter's mobile-app code.</p>
<p>Vine, on the other hand, seems to have simply charmed Twitter's leaders with the premise of a new art form, a video version of Twitter's 140-character tweets.</p>
<p>But whatever the specific reasoning to buy a company, it's very interesting that Twitter's breaking from the acquire-hire pattern of buying startups and crushing what makes them unique.</p>

<p class="source"><span>Amazon</span></p><p class="caption">One of Ring's smart doorbells.</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>A study has found that Amazon-owned home security company Ring provides user data to firms including Facebook and Google.</li><li>The study, by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, found the Android version of the Ring app to be "packed" with third-party trackers.</li><li>The app gives data such as names, IP addresses, and mobile networks to five firms, the EFF said.</li><li>Ring said trackers "help us improve features, optimize the customer experience and evaluate the effectiveness of our marketing."</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Amazon-owned home security firm Ring hands personal information about its users to companies like Facebook and Google, a study has found.</p><p>The study, <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/01/ring-doorbell-app-packed-third-party-trackers">by digital rights nonprofit the Electronic Frontier Foundation</a>, found the Android version of the Ring app to be "packed" with third-party trackers that gather users' personally identifiable information.</p><p>Ring is best-known for its range of smart doorbells, which contain a high-definition camera, a motion sensor, a microphone and a speaker. These are controlled by the Ring app, and it's this which is leaking data, according to the EFF.</p><p>In total, the study found information including names, IP addresses, and mobile networks was leaking to five tracking services.</p><p>It isn't unusual for mobile apps to contain third-party trackers, although many users are unaware of the extent to which they are tracked. App developers allow these trackers for various reasons - to monetize their app or to keep track of how often the app crashes, for example.</p><p>But the EFF highlighted how Ring's promise of security is undermined by its Android app handing out personally identifiable data to third parties. "This data is given to parties either only mentioned briefly, buried on an internal page users are unlikely to ever see, or not listed at all," the EFF wrote.</p><p>Facebook, via its Graph API, was found to be receiving each Ring app user's time zone, device model and screen resolution, and a unique identifier. What's more, the study found that the app gives data to Facebook whether or not its customers actually have Facebook accounts.</p><p>Meanwhile, Google-owned crash logging firm Crashlytics was also found to be receiving sent data from the app.</p><p>The EFF said "the extent of [the Ring app's] data sharing with [Crashanalytics] is yet to be determined."</p><p>The other three companies found to be receiving personally identifiable information were Branch, a mobile measurement and deep linking platform; AppsFlyer, a big data company; and MixPanel, a business analytics firm.</p><p>Ring has faced heavy criticism in recent months, much of it privacy-related. Amazon's home security company Ring hands personally identifiable information to Facebook and Google, according to a study

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Twitter</span></p><p class="caption">Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey at Twitter Flight 2015</p></div><p></p></div></div>Google has purchased Fabric, Twitter's platform for developers to build apps, for an undisclosed sum, <a href="https://fabric.io/blog/fabric-joins-google">according to a blog entry</a>.</p><p>In 2016, it was reported that Google would make a bid for Twitter, competing with the likes of Disney and Salesforce, but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-stock-tanks-after-report-google-wont-make-a-bid-2016-10">ultimately decided not to put in an offer</a>.</p><p>Fabric, which encompasses mega-popular tools for building mobile apps like Crashlytics, Answers and Fastlane, will become a part of Google's Developer Products division, joining the search giant's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-launches-firebase-analytics-2016-5">similarly-focused Firebase business</a>.</p><p>In that blog entry, Twitter says that over 580,000 developers have used Fabric's tools since the platform was introduced in 2014, powering apps on some 2.5 million mobile devices.</p><p>Twitter VP of Product Management Jeff Seibert - who had been serving as the head of Fabric - has said via Twitter that he won't be coming along to Google. Twitter just sold its developer platform to Google

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Yesterday we reported another acquisition: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-bluefin-labs-2013-2">social TV analytics company Bluefin Labs</a>. AllThingsD estimates <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130204/why-twitter-is-buying-bluefin-and-why-bluefin-is-selling/">a sale price of $70 million</a>. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If those pricing reports are accurate, then Twitter just dropped about $200 million all in one place and it now has about 75 employees in the same building.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Startups should scramble to get a spot in 1 Kendell Square. It seems like a lucky place to be.</span></p>

If You Want Twitter To Acquire Your Startup For Millions, Try Moving Into 1 Kendall Square

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Matt Weinberger</span></p><p class="caption">Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey at Twitter Flight 2015</p></div><p></p></div></div>At Twitter's annual Flight event today, newly-installed Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey confessed that the company made a big mistake back in 2012 when it shut down access to developers.</p><p>"Somewhere along the line, our relationship with developers got a little bit complicated, a little bit confusing, a little bit unpredictable," Dorsey says. "And we want to come to you today, and first and foremost apologize for the confusion." </p><p>Earlier this year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-bans-politwoops-diplotwoops-global-api-access-revoked-open-state-foundation-2015-8">Twitter came under fire for shutting down a service called "Politwoops,"</a> known for archiving the deleted tweets of political figures, for making what it called improper use of its data.</p><p>Dorsey called out the Politwoops situation as an example of that "confusion." </p><p>And way back in 2012, the still-very-new Twitter shut down third-party access to its main API - meaning that it completely killed the nascent, but growing, market for third-party Twitter clients and other apps that took advantage of the social network to power their apps.  </p><p>"Fundamentally, Twitter is a simple messaging service," Dorsey says. "What's unique about Twitter is how people have made it their own." </p><p>Dorsey notes that some of Twitter's best features, from the concept of the hasthag and the use of "@" to mark a user name, to Marc Andreessen's famed Tweetstorms, have come from outside users who loved the service and wanted to make it better.</p><p>"All of these became cultural movements. So much so that other services had to implement them," Dorsey says.</p><p>And so, Dorsey says that under his leadership, Twitter will work to "serve this world in the right way" and win back developer trust.</p><p>To that end, Twitter made a series of announcements today aimed at winning developers over to building on top of its platform, including updates to the Twitter Fabric identity service and popular Crashlytics bug logging tool, to help app-makers build and monetize their apps. </p><p>And if you Tweet at Dorsey with the hashtag "#HelloWorld," he says that the team will listen to developer feedback. </p><p> "We can't do this alone. <p>It's at least the fourth acquisitions that Twitter has made in the data space, and few people have paid any attention to it. Everyone knows that Twitter is an advertising business, and ads make up nearly 90% of the company's revenue.</p>
<p>Twitter has actively played down the other side of its business, data licensing, warning investors in its SEC disclosures that it expects data payments to be a declining percentage of its overall revenue.</p>
<p>But when you look at Twitter's data revenue as a standalone business, you realize how healthy it is: In 2013, Twitter got $70 million in data licensing payments, up 48% from the year before. By the end of 2014, Twitter could easily see $100 million in data revenue if the segment continues growing at that rate.</p>
<p>If some 25-year-old Stanford grad had built an app that threw off $100 million in data fees every year, she would be touting a valuation in the billions and fighting off acquisition offers from Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. But because data licensing is tucked inside Twitter, no one cares.</p>
<p>Among Twitter's data-generating properties are:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Crashlytics:</strong> acquired in January 2013 for $38.2 million. The unit develops mobile app crash reporting and analysis for developers.</li>
<li><strong>Bluefin Labs:</strong> acquired in February 2013 for $67.3 million: it provides social TV analytics to advertisers.</li>
<li><strong>MoPub:</strong> acquired in October 2013 for $350 million. MoPub is a mobile ad exchange so it's really an ad business - but everyone knows that the value of mobile ad businesses is often in the targeting data, not the mere media exposure.</li>
<li>Twitter also acquired<strong> five other small companies</strong> in 2013 for a total price of $13.2 million. Its annual report does not disclose what these acqui-hires do.</li>
<li><strong>Gnip:</strong> acquired today for an undisclosed sum. TechCrunch reports: "Gnip offers access to historical Twitter data, and the full Twitter data firehose, but it also offers APIs that provide data from other social networks including Reddit, Instagram, Tumblr, Bitly and more. Gnip says that working with Twitter as a part of the company will let it "go much faster and much deeper," and they plan to expand support to include a wider set of potential use cases in different industries."</li>
</ul>
<p>Twitter will report Q1 earnings soon and the stock will likely be driven by one thing: user metrics. In the last quarter, CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-q4-earnings-2014-2">Dick Costolo reported robust financials for the company</a> on declining user engagement. The stock - which is down - appears to be driven entirely by user metrics right now.</p>
<p>That's a shame, because Wall Street might want to ask how it was possible that Twitter got more money from users spending less time with the app - that's the kind of financial engineering corporate dreams are made of.</p>
<p>One possible answer is, Twitter is better at data than it is at pleasing its users. And clients using Twitter data (for ad purposes or otherwise) get a decent return on their money.</p>
<p>The Gnip acquisition suggests that Costolo is sticking with this plan. Sooner or later, it may pay off.</p>
