An Italian court has found out that the UPA government concealed some critical issues in the <keyword id="1560103" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VVIP-chopper-scandal">VVIP chopper scandal</keyword>, hiding several documents with investigators. The court has also found out that the main accused, the then Italian Prime Minister <keyword id="826514" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mario-Monti">Mario Monti</keyword>, had tried to reach out to his Indian counterpart <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword>. 
 In the 225-page order, which was accessed by ET, the <keyword id="3336940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Court-of-Appeals-of-Milan">Court of Appeals of Milan</keyword> has given in depth details of its grounds for conviction. About the UPA government hiding important details, it observed: "This showing (of) a substantial disregard to arrive at a full explanation of facts (was) effectively demonstrated by the procedural behaviour of the Indian Ministry of Defence." 
 
The Italian court, which is equivalent to the High Courts of India, further speculated if all this was connected to a handwritten note that was recovered in March 2013 from former Finmeccanica head Giuseppe Orsi's prison cell. 
 
The note said, "Call Monti or amb. Teracciano in my name to ask him to call the PM Singh." Monti was the then Italian PM and Teracciano was his diplomatic advisor. 
 
The court then said that while it's not in a "position to determine what was the message that Orsi, during his detention, intended to send to the head of Government of India but the same can be guessed if we think about the outcome of requests for judicial assistance sent to Indian authorities." 
 
A footnote said that in April 2013, Italy had requested full documents related to the case from Indian government, but only three documents were provided and that too by as late as March 2014. The judgement, which also questioned the involvement of British middleman Christian Michel, makes extensive referrals to CAG’s report about the matter. 
 
In its ruling in the case, the Italian court had stated that the 2010 deal to purchase 12 VVIP helicopters by India from AgustaWestland involved corruption at international levels, which is why it had ordered a four-and-a-half-years jail term to the former head of the company, Giuseppe Orsi. 
 
It was in 2013 that the UPA government had cancelled the deal, saying that the integrity pact was violated. After that, most of the money paid to the Italian company has been recovered, while three VVIP choppers that were delivered to India are lying dormant.

UPA government hid vital facts about VVIP helicopter scam, an Italian court reveals

Amidst India’s ruling and opposition parties’ constant blame games on the topic of the <keyword id="1558702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VVIP-chopper-scam">VVIP chopper scam</keyword>, some interesting details have surfaced, regarding a scam of Rs 330 crore by <keyword id="1559132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Christian-Michel">Christian Michel</keyword>, a British businessman. 
 Even though Michel was paid 44 million euros at that time by <keyword id="252971" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="AgustaWestland">AgustaWestland</keyword>, a large portion of this money is "completely disproportionate" to the work he did for the company, at least this is how Italy’s Milan Court of Appeals has described Mithcel, who is sought by Indian investigators for his involvement in the case, so much so that it was on India's request that Interpol had issued a red corner notice against Michel in December 2015. 
 Italian prosecutors have put ahead an argument that Michel, along with <keyword id="3339722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Guido-Hashke">Guido Hashke</keyword>, a Swiss-Italian national, influenced Indian officials to pick Agusta's choppers. They have also alleged him to be a key player in the VVIP chopper deal. 
 
As per the Milan court, Michel was paid over 44 million euros by AgustaWestland for various contracts, including a deal to supply spare parts for Indian naval helicopters and a post-contract service deal for the VVIP chopper contract. 
 
In the judgement, the court said that the description of his work for the contracts was "completely disproportionate to the large amount of fees paid to him".

Asuncion, Apr 8 (AFP) A Paraguayan judge on Tuesday ordered the release of Brazilian football great Ronaldinho and his brother into house arrest at a hotel in downtown Asuncion. Judge Gustavo Amarilla told reporters that he had ordered the "continuation of house arrest in a hotel for Ronaldinho and his brother." They were jailed exactly a month ago on Monday to await trial on charges of using false passports to enter Paraguay. Lawyers for the men posted bail of $1.6 million.The ruling means the brothers can swap their grim police cell block -- which also housed Paraguay's former soccer federation chief and the ex-speaker of the lower house of parliament -- for a plush Colonial-style hotel in central Asuncion.The brochure of the refurbished 107-room Palmaroga hotel, located in the capital's historic center, describes it as offering "a seamless blend of early 1900s Renaissance grace and modern comfort as well as luxury." "I have the assurance of the hotel managers that they, at their own expense, can observe house arrest there," Amarilla told a news conference. Paraguay's appeals court last month rejected a request to release the pair, meaning the two-time world player of the year spent his 40th birthday behind bars.With Paraguay's capital in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the judge communicated his ruling in a cellphone call to the brothers, with prosecutors and defence lawyers -- and TV cameras -- present.A beaming Ronaldinho, in a black tee-shirt and matching headband, gave a thumbs up sign to show he understood the terms of his release.He and his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira -- who is also his business manager -- initially encountered no problems after arriving in Asuncion from neighboring Brazil on March 4.However, shortly after their arrival, the brothers were taken into police custody when investigators raided their hotel following the discovery that their passports were fake. Ronaldinho, given a rock star's welcome to Asuncion by around 2,000 children and teenagers, said the passports had been given to him by sponsors of a charity working with disadvantaged children. Fourteen other people have been charged in the case, which has expanded into an investigation into possible money laundering. An arrest warrant has been issued for the Paraguayan businesswoman in charge of the charity foundation that invited Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho, considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, was a star of Brazil's 2002 World Cup win and played for European giants Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, among others.He has proved a popular inmate of the jail in police headquarters, donating a trophy to the winning team in a recent prisoners' futsal tournament. Paraguay court releases Ronaldinho into house arrest in Asuncion hotel

<table class="image-container float_right" width="200"><tr><td><div class="image"></div>AP</td></tr></table>MILAN (AP) — An appeals court has upheld the tax fraud conviction against ex-Premier <keyword id="6402009" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Silvio-Berlusconi">Silvio Berlusconi</keyword> and sentenced him to four years in prison.
But the former Italian leader could appeal this verdict to a higher court, the Court of Cassation.
In October, a court convicted Berlusconi in a scheme that involved inflating the price his Mediaset media empire paid for TV rights to U.S. movies and pocketing the difference. Berlusconi denied the charges and says he's a victim of politically motivated prosecutors.
That verdict was upheld Wednesday by the appeals court in Milan.
The lower court, which began hearing the case in 2006, also said Berlusconi could not hold public office for five years or manage any company for three years, penalties that would take force only if the conviction is upheld on two levels of appeal.

Knox, who was accused of killing her study-abroad roommate in 2007, explains her youthful exploits in her new memoir <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Waiting-Be-Heard-A-Memoir/dp/0062217208">"Amanda Knox: Waiting To Be Heard."</a>
Knox became known in the media as "Foxy Knoxy" — a nickname earlier assigned to her by soccer teammates back home in Seattle — and prosecutors in Meredith Kercher's murder case spread the theory that Knox killed her then-roommate <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21937825">during a "sex game" gone wrong</a>.
Knox was often portrayed as a "<keyword id="6355231" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sex">sex</keyword> pot" who liked to experiment. 
Not true, she says.
Knox says her friends back home made her feel inexperienced and told her to "give casual sex a chance." She says she "yearned to break down all the barriers" between her and adulthood, and "sex was a big one."
She goes into some detail about the random hook-ups that were eventually leaked to the press after Italian prison officials (falsely) told her she had HIV and demanded a list of her past sexual partners.
Knox describes meeting a man named Cristiano on a train from Milan to Florence. She makes her innocence and inexperience clear: 
I wondered if Cristiano thought I was cute — the word I used to describe myself back then. The leap to beautiful or sexy was too huge for me to make. In my mind, if that ever happened, it would only be after I'd grown into a sexually confident woman. 
But she quickly had second thoughts: 
We were making out, fooling around like crazy, when, an hour later, I realized, I don't even know this guy. I jumped up, kissed him once more, and said good-bye.
She says the encounter left her with a giant cold sore and oral herpes.
It's clear that Knox wants to establish that she doesn't feel comfortable with the "party girl" label. She spends more time establishing that the casual sex she was criticized for was a product of peer pressure:
