Vitamin D is a hormone, produced in the skin during exposure to sunlight, and helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, which are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. In a retrospective study of patients tested for Covid-19, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, the researchers found an association between vitamin D deficiency and the likelihood of becoming infected with the coronavirus. "Vitamin D is important to the function of the immune system and vitamin D supplements have previously been shown to lower the risk of viral respiratory tract infections," said study lead author David Meltzer from the University of Chicago (UChicago) in the US. "Our statistical analysis suggests this may be true for the Covid-19 infection," Meltzer added. For the study, the research team looked at 489 UChicago Medicine patients whose vitamin D level was measured within a year before being tested for Covid-19. The findings showed that patients who had vitamin D deficiency, that was not treated, were almost twice as likely to test positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus compared to patients who had sufficient levels of the vitamin. "Half of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, with much higher rates seen in African Americans, Hispanics and individuals living in areas like Chicago where it is difficult to get enough sun exposure in winter," the researchers wrote. "Understanding whether treating Vitamin D deficiency changes Covid-19 risk could be of great importance locally, nationally and globally," Meltzer said. Vitamin D is inexpensive, generally very safe to take, and can be widely scaled. The research team emphasized the importance of experimental studies to determine whether vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk, and potential severity, of Covid-19. They also highlight the need for studies of what strategies for vitamin D supplementation may be most appropriate in specific populations. They have initiated several clinical trials at UChicago Medicine and with partners locally. Earlier, another study published in the journal FEBS, found that low levels of Vitamin D in the blood are associated with an increased risk of Covid-19 infection. The ongoing second wave of the pandemic has forced the French government to impose tougher restrictive measures including curfews in a majority of regions across the country. More than two-thirds of the French population, or around 46 million people, have been requested to stay home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for six weeks. On October 24, the National Assembly adopted at the first reading the extension of the state of health emergency until February 16, 2021. The bill authorizes the executive to introduce restrictions to face a "period which will be long and difficult", warned Health Minister Olivier Veran. The toll will "grow heavier in the coming days and weeks, whatever we do" due to the dynamics of the epidemic, he added. France reports new record high single-day Covid-19 cases

The Defence Research Development Organisation has developed a prototype ventilator that can be used for multiple patients, its chief <keyword id="3051242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satheesh-Reddy">Satheesh Reddy</keyword> said on Monday, amid a spike in the number of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> cases in the country. He added the model is being improved to include changes suggested by medical researchers and doctors and the new version should be ready by next week. "We are attempting to take the output of one ventilator. The mechanism makes it usable for multiple patients. We have developed the first model. We have seen it is working. There are some medical researchers, doctors who have advised us to incorporate features. We are working on it," he said. Reddy said this is a "last-minute resort" if the number of coronavirus patients increases and there is shortage of ventilators. "By next week it should be ready with the suggestions made by the doctors and medical researchers," he said. The DRDO has prepared ventilator designs in the past and passed it on to the industry. Separately, the <keyword id="210071" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health">Ministry of Health</keyword> said the DRDO will begin manufacturing 20,000 N-95 masks per day from next week. The ministry has also asked the Bharat Electronics Ltd, a public-sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, to manufacture 30,000 ventilators in next two months. Among private players, Agva Healthcare, Noida, has been given an order to manufacture 10,000 ventilators within a month. Hit by the coronavirus crisis and the nation-wide lockdown, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has urged landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) or restaurant industry to waive their rents and the common area maintenance charges till June or till the lockdown lasts. In an open letter to the landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) business, the industry body representing over 5 lakh restaurants said that although the shutdown may remain for a month two, the industry will take many more months to revive. "While this shutdown may continue for a month or two, we will take many more months post that to get back on our feeta and we will not be able to sail through this period smoothly without your support," said the letter NRAI also sought that the common area maintenance charge should be taken at 50 per cent of the agreed rate for the six months after the lockdown ends. It also said that there should not be "minimum guaranteed rents for six months post that and instead work on a pure revenue share equivalent to 50 per cent of the agreed terms up to a maximum of 10 per cent of monthly revenues." NRAI President Anurag Katriar said: "This appeal is aimed at ensuring our mere survival during such extraordinarily troubled times. We aren't trying to be profiteer at the expense of the landlords. As long-standing business partners of ours, we are hopeful that the landlords will extend their support in these times of unprecedented crisis." The industry body, last week wrote to the Finance Minister seeking economic relief for the restaurant industry in view of the disruption caused by the coronavirus scare in the country. Acknowledging the recent relief measures by the government including the deferment of GST return filings, he said that the sector would require a larger stimulus package to revive the sector and support its over 70 lakh employees. "We will need a much bigger stimulus package from the government whenever we get back to the stage of rebooting our business," he said.
