"Now, I'm scared of building relationships with patients. At first I did that, and then I would come back for my next shift and see their empty bed, and that would break my heart. Even the fact that I now refer to them as "the patient." The Ordinance seeks amendments to the 125-years-old Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, that protects health workers in the country. What is the Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Ordinance 2020? The Indian government in April approved an ordinance that recognised any crime against health workers in India as a “cognizable and non-bailable” offence. It means that offenders can be arrested without a warrant, and no bail would be granted. Offenders can also be fined anywhere between ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh and will also have to serve a prison term between 3 months to five years, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar had said in April. Moreover, people who damage the vehicles of healthcare workers or clinics will have to compensate by paying twice the value of the damaged property. These cases will be fast-tracked. Before joining the helpline team, Cognizant's doctor volunteers took a two-week virtual training from Shah on various aspects of running a helpline, such as gathering information from callers, reading symptoms, and responding to various types of questions. Cognizant has over 2,700 medical professionals globally, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists who provide critical services such as pharmacovigilance, clinical data management, medical management and claims management, among others, to healthcare and life sciences organisations globally. Under Cognizant's employee-led volunteering program Outreach, Cognizant employees are supporting several governmental and non-governmental organisations across India on COVID-19 initiatives. Cognizant's doctors volunteer at Covid-19 helpline and address queries

Last December, Dr. Hasan Gokal was working with Harris County Public Health at their first vaccination site. At the end of a shift, Gokal tried to find eligible people for leftover doses of the Moderna vaccine that would have expired and went door-to-door to administer shots.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-hasan-gokal-door-door-vaccine-effort-wouldnt-work-now-2021-7">Gokal was accused of violating protocols and fired.</a> District Attorney Kim Ogg also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-doctor-charged-stealing-covid-19-vaccine-doses-2021-1">filed theft charges against him.</a>Harris County Public Health also reached out to the Texas Medical Board to initiate an investigation for unethical behavior which was dismissed in March. Gokal was unable to work until that investigation was complete. In June, a grand jury acquitted Gokal of the charges. Gokal told Insider it was soon after the charges were dropped that he began thinking about suing the county, but it wasn't until about a month ago that he seriously discussed it with a lawyer. He said while he was relieved the case against him has been dropped, the past nine months weighed heavily on him and his family and hopes the suit will bring him justice."The first few months of this was rough, not being able to do a job. Not sure if my career is over. What's going to happen with the criminal charges and so on and so forth. Anybody in that level of stress and degree of uncertainty in life is going to be impacted by that uncertainty," Gokal said. "It was felt throughout my family. The kids are young and you can see the stress on them. My wife, certainly her condition got worse through all the stress."Gokal added that he's also hoping to ensure this doesn't happen again: "You're talking about a physician who does what a physician does, and you suddenly turn it into a criminal issue. That shouldn't happen to anybody else. Any way you cut it, it's just wrong," he told Insider. Additionally, Gokal said he wants to bring attention to the issue that Harris County Public Health, like other public health agencies across the country, is "not using physicians anymore and they're making decisions on their own without it." He said these agencies are making decisions about public health without necessary experts like doctors. "This has changed in the last year, and it's a very worrisome and dangerous trend," Gokal said. In a press release emailed to Insider, Gokal and his attorney said the public health department told him "he picked the wrong people to help - too many of them had 'Indian' names, too many of them were Asian.""It's very clear that if he had vaccinated people named Anderson, Smith, and Jones he would have been called a hero and not have been fired, charged, vilified, and brought before a grand jury that thankfully refused to indict him," Gokal's attorney, Joe Ahmad, said. The Harris County District Attorney did not respond to Insider's request for comment at the time of publication but previously told <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hasan-gokal-covid-lawsuit-harris-county-public-health-district/">CBS News</a> "The District Attorney's Office prosecutes state crimes that occur in Harris County. "The full nature of the damages isn't known yet because frankly, the economic damages are still being suffered. Dr. Gokal is working, he's taking some shifts in the ER room. It's not the ideal job, but he's doing it," Ahmad told Insider.Gokal told Insider the case caused him a lot of stress and he wasn't able to dedicate his attention to patients full time. Additionally, Ahmad told Insider the publicity from the case has negatively impacted Gokal's reputation. "We believe he's going to be suffering a year from now, two years from now, if for no other reason than the nature of the publicity against him - how he was vilified, nationwide, worldwide," Ahmad said. "And so, do we believe that the damages could exceed $1 million? Absolutely. We'll know more as time goes by."Gokal said he's frustrated because he did what he was supposed to do."I don't think I was treated fairly, so I'm hoping to get a sense of fairness out of this, that's number one," he said.

The Houston doctor who was fired for administering leftover vaccine doses is suing Harris County, Texas, after being acquitted by a grand jury

Abu Dhabi, May 3 () A 62-year-old Indian businessman has died in Abu Dhabi after contracting the novel coronavirus, according to a media report. PK Kareem Haji, who hailed from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, died on Thursday due to complications arising from coronavirus infection, his son Mohammad Abdul Gafoor told the Gulf News. Haji was a former president of Abu Dhabi Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) and an active member in the Indian Islamic Centre and the Sunni Centre, the daily reported. Gafoor said his father was a diabetes patient since 15 years. "Two weeks ago he complained of fever, cough. Our local doctor took a swab test and the result came positive (for coronavirus). My father was shifted to Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi. His condition deteriorated and the last two days he was put on ventilator," Gafoor said. Dubai, May 11 () An Indian dentist in Kuwait has died from the novel coronavirus, becoming the country's second medical professional to succumb to COVID-19, according to a media report. Dr Vasudeva Rao, 54, died on Saturday in Jaber hospital where he was undergoing treatment for coronavirus infection, news website timeskuwait.com reported.A resident of Kuwait for about 15 years, Rao worked as an endodontist at Kuwait Oil Company, a subsidiary of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, a government-owned company.Rao was a member of Indian Dentists' Alliance in Kuwait, an organisation of Indian dental professionals in Kuwait. The organisation mourned his loss.On Friday, Egyptian ENT specialist Tareq Hussain Mokheimer died of COVID-19, becoming Kuwait's first such medical fatality, the Gulf News reported.Mokheimer, 62, had worked in Kuwait for more than 20 years.A total of 171 people arrived in Chennai from Kuwait on Sunday as part of thegovernment's Vande Bharat Mission to bring home Indian nationals stranded in various countries.Kuwait has reported 58 deaths and 8,688 infections due to the novel coronavirus.Globally, the death toll due to COVID-19 has gone up to 282,727 with over four million infections reported so far, according to Johns Hopkins University tally. By Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 20 () Lying on a hospital bed in New York, Dr Madhvi Aya could only exchange text messages with her husband and daughter. She was not able to meet them one last time. The 61-year-old woman, who died last week, was afflicted with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while treating a positive patient in March. Aya, who moved to the US along with her husband in 1994, is among the several Indian-American doctors who are in the frontline in the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic. "Aya's text messages and her family's account of her final days reveal a woman who spent much of her life devoted to medicine before succumbing to the cruel and familiar arc of a patient with COVID-19," reported local Sun-Sentinel. Indian American community leaders say that quite a number of Indian American doctors have been infected during this once-in-a-century public health crisis. The number could be in several dozens and several of the Indian-American physicians have succumbed to coronavirus. A majority of them are said to be from New York and New Jersey. Dr Rajat Gupta (name changed) was attending a coronavirus patient in the emergency room of a hospital in New Jersey early this month. A few moments later, the patient threw up. It hit his face with a force. Gupta fell ill and he tested positive for coronavirus. Despite best efforts, doctors could not save his live, adding to the growing list of Indian-Americans who have died due to COVID-19. "It's hard to know the exact number of infected one," Ravi Kolli, secretary of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), told . "There are at least 10 (Indian American doctors) who are critically ill." One of the largest doctor's organisations of its kind, the AAPI represents more than 80,000 Indian-American doctors, who constitute the largest ethnic group of physicians in the US. "AAPI members, as a group, are over-represented in all the hotspot areas, as well as caring for underserved populations," he said. Early this week, Indian American nephrologist Priya Khanna, 43, died in a New Jersey hospital. Her father Satyendra Khanna (78), a general surgeon, has tested positive and is said to be in a critical condition in the intensive care unit in the same hospital. "Indian-American physicians are the real heroes. Many have become positive in the process, some have died, some are in ICU now and some are recuperating at home," AAPI vice president Dr Anupama Gotimukula said. Community leaders are praying for Dr Ajay Lodha, a former AAPI president, who has tested positive for COVID-19, has been hospitalised and now is in ICU in a New York hospital. Gastroenterologist Dr Anjana Samadder from Ohio, wife of former AAPI president Dr Gautam Sammader is also reported to be battling for her life. Another prominent Indian American physician Dr Sunil Mehra is said to be in serious condition. "They are bravely leading the enormous challenge of fighting COVID 19 pandemic at their own personal risk without a second thought, which speaks volumes for their compassion, commitment and sense of duty," Kolli said. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Asian American are least impacted by coronavirus among various ethnic groups. According to a CDC data that was recently updated, they account for nearly 4.4 percent of the total infected cases. " The virus has killed more than 40,000 people in the US and over 7,63,000 have tested positive. Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi expressed his gratitude to the physicians and other healthcare professionals for their "dedication to the nation, for helping all to cope with the situation, guaranteeing the wellbeing of all". "I want to say thank you to the Doctors Without Borders as well as the University of California San Francisco for sending their warriors to the frontlines to this war against coronavirus," Nez said.Tribal communities recently received a $600 million government payout to help during COVID-19, but they're still facing supply shortages and inadequate infrastructure that makes controlling the coronavirus and distributing supplies more difficult.Bleu Adams, Navajo business owner and co-founder of Protect Native Elders, feels that poor infrastructure is getting in the way of delivering relief. "Although some Native American Nations have received the much needed Care Act funding, it will continue to be a complex and slow-moving situation. Getting and distributing supplies is inhibited by a hopelessly inadequate infrastructure," Adams said.
