US drug maker <keyword id="44612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pfizer" source="Orion">Pfizer</keyword>'s Covid-19 vaccine is likely to get authorization for providing vaccines to children aged between 5 to 12 by October, according to Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Currently of the three Covid-19 vaccines used in the US, only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been granted the emergency use authorisation for children aged 12 and older. Pfizer along with Moderna and Johnson and Johnson are conducting clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the vaccines in children under 12. Results of the Pfizer vaccine for children are expected in September. "Pfizer will be in a position to file data with the FDA at some point next month, and then submit its application to expand its emergency use authorisation for its vaccine in children 5 years and older as early as October," Gottlieb was quoted as saying in an interview on CBS News on Sunday. "The agency (FDA) will be in a position to make an authorisation, I believe, at some point, late fall, probably early winter. "And probably they're going to base their decision on what the circumstances around the country are, and what the urgency is to get a vaccine for kids," Gottlieb, who is also a member of Pfizer's board of directors, told CBC News. Pfizer has also been conducting clinical trials of its Covid-19 shot in children ages 2 and older. The results will be available in November. If the FDA authorises Pfizer's vaccine in kids between the ages of 5 and 11 in November or early December, "that, again, puts you on a timeframe that you could start rolling out these vaccinations before the end of the year", Gottlieb noted. Vaccinating younger children against Covid would be crucial as the highly contagious Delta variant is driving cases, particularly among the children. According to Gottlieb, there are roughly 300 kids being hospitalised each day with Covid-19, and infection rates among children have spiked with schools reopening. The two "best things" schools can do, Gottlieb said, is testing students twice a week and keeping them in geographic or social pods to cut down on intermingling among the full student body. Gottlieb also advocated for students to wear face masks and schools to improve ventilation, as well as vaccinated those who are currently eligible. Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine may be authorised for kids aged 5-12 by October, says company's board member

In a separate communication, Moderna has informed that the US has agreed to donate a certain number of doses of its COVID-19 vaccine through COVAX to the Government of India for use here and has sought approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), while <keyword id="6357157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cipla">Cipla</keyword>, on behalf of the US pharma major, has requested for import and marketing authorization of these jabs. According to the sources, an approval is likely anytime as the CDSCO is in favour of granting permission to Cipla for import of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for restricted emergency use in India considering the pandemic situation in the country and in public interest. Cipla filed an application on Monday seeking permission for import of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine referring to DCGI notices dated April 15 and June 1 as per which if the vaccine is approved by the <keyword id="44669" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="USFDA">USFDA</keyword> for EUA, the vaccine can be granted marketing authorisation without bridging trial and assessment of safety data of first 100 beneficiaries of vaccines shall be submitted before rolling out in immunization programme. Also, the requirement of testing of every batch by the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli can be exempted if the batch/lot is released by the CDL of country of origin. However, summary lot protocol review and scrutiny of documents shall be undertaken by the laboratory for batch release as per standard procedures, Cipla said referring to the DCGI's new revised rules. "This correspondence is to request the CDSCO to open a file for approval of these urgently needed vaccines," Moderna said. In a bid to expedite the roll out of vaccines, the DCGI on June 1 decided to waive off testing of batches at CDL for foreign-manufactured vaccines that have been approved by international drug regulators such as the US FDA, the UK's MHRA or the WHO. The Centre had in April issued detailed guidelines and proactively eased entry of foreign made COVID-19 vaccines approved by the US FDA, EMA, UK's MHRA and Japan's PMDA, and WHO's Emergency Use Listing into India. According to the guidelines, these vaccines will not need to undergo prior bridging trials. The provision was further amended to waive off the trial requirement altogether for the well-established vaccines manufactured in other countries.

Pfizer's new COVID-19 vaccine is 95% effective and the only severe side-effect to worry about is fatigue, according to the final results

Recently, drug company <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> announced that its vaccine candidate for Covid-19 is more than 90 per cent effective at preventing infection. This was welcomed as a major step in the fight against the virus, which has unleashed havoc on the global economy. Guleria added that the Indian Covid-19 vaccine has a huge advantage over the Pfizer vaccine, which is required to be kept at a much lower temperature, and hence, cold storage for other vaccines can be used for the Indian vaccine too. Q: We have not seen any major issue with Indian vaccines at the trials stage, are you satisfied with progress made so far? A: Indian vaccines have a lot of hope and there are two or three reasons for that, one is that their safety signal is very good and immunogenicity is also being shown, and one is now looking at the results of Phase-3 trials, which will take some time, but I am hopeful we will have good amount of data because multi-centric studies is being done. We quickly will be able to generate some interim analysis to show in Phase-3 trials this vaccine can give good efficacy. A: What Pfizer has got is something very encouraging for other vaccines researchers also, because that shows there is a potential of good immunity by the vaccines. Therefore, other vaccines should also do well. Therefore, it is a big news for all vaccine developers. We can hope for a 90 per cent efficacy. The advantage for the Indian vaccine is that it is required to be kept at a much lower temperature. The Pfizer vaccine currently have to be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius, therefore it will be very difficult to vaccinate people in lower- and middle-income countries. Because having a vaccine stored and transported at minus 70 degree Celsius not only needs huge investment but also needs huge planning, because most vaccines are not kept at that low temperatures. The Indian vaccines are going to be kept at a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius and this is available for most vaccines. As most vaccines a have cold storage facility, these can be used for this vaccine also. Therefore, the investment is not much. If we were to use a vaccine which require storage at minus 70 degrees Celsius, then one would require whole new cold chain development. I do not see that happening in lot of countries. Q: Is 90 per cent efficacy is being aimed at by Indian companies developing vaccine against Covid-19? A: We would like to have as much efficacy as one can. The WHO says if any vaccine has more than 50 per cent efficacy, it is good enough. We would definitely like to have an efficacy of 80-90 per cent. So, let us hope that is what we are able to achieve. Indian COVID vaccines can survive in warmer temperatures than Pfizer's, says AIIMS Director

India has added 96,760 new coronavirus infections — the highest single-day spike any country has ever added in 24 hours. India on September 9 reported 1,172 deaths and on September 8 there were 1,172 deaths reported. India's fatality cases per day are now crossing US' which is the worst-hit by the pandemic. On the other hand, India also saw a 100% increase in patients recovered and discharged in the past 29 days, according to the Ministry of Health. So far, 3,471,783 people have recovered from COVID-19. The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped the 28 million mark, while the deaths have increased to over 908,000,<a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases"> according to John Hopkins University. </a> The US accounts for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,395,904 and 191,753 respectively. India currently ranks second in terms of cases at 4,465,863, while the country's death toll stood at 75,062. In the first phase, a dose escalation is done to see what the ideal dose for an optimal immune response is. In the second phase, it is tested if the immune response can be done in all age groups. This is important as the first phase is conducted with young healthy volunteers who are at minimal risk. In the third phase, the vaccine is given to a larger population to ensure that the same immune response is given by everyone who is vaccinated. “One of the most important things of this phase is to check how long the immunity stays. This allows to determine how often a person will have to get revaccinated,” Shaw further noted.
