With a cast led by Paul Mescal in his first blockbuster leading role, "Gladiator II" delivers on the action, and should definitely be seen on the biggest screen you can find. Just don't worry too much about the narrative — or the historical details.</p><p>The sequel, directed by Scott, picks up approximately a decade and a half after the death of Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), the Roman emperor who dreamed of a better empire before being killed by his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Commodus was eventually taken down by Roman general-cum-gladiator Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), who also died of his wounds in the battle at the end of the original 2000 film.</p><p>By the time "Gladiator II" picks up, not much has changed. Rome is ever-expanding, characterized by the hunger and decadence of its twin rulers, Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). Despite growing up in Rome, Lucius has little desire to return. Unfortunately, like his father, he's been taken as a slave following the death of his wife, picked up by the calculating Macrinus (Denzel Washington) as a fighter under a false name, and given the chance to slay his way to freedom in the Colosseum.</p><p>"Gladiator II" does its best to juggle its many contentious relationships, and the broader conflicts that they represent in the film, to middling success. Lucius chafes against Rome's carnivorous nature represented in Acacius, the depravity modeled by its twin emperors, and its social order embodied in Macrinus, a former slave who has clawed his way into power. Pascal's character, in particular, feels half-baked both as a person and as a symbol for the Rome Lucius must come to love and defeat — it's the actor's performance that drives any buy-in.</p><p>Some important dynamics, like the one between Lucius and his mother Lucilla, suffer amid rapid pacing. And Washington's Macrinus, though carried by the actor's intensely captivating presence, can be difficult to parse. Some of that is certainly by design, and Washington draws out Macrinus' calculating, jovial, and menacing facets with equal aplomb. Scott brings his sensibility for scale to gigantic battles, like the naval conflict that kicks off the film's action. "Gladiator II" shines best, though, in tightly choreographed sequences, like the battle between Acacius and Lucius teased in trailers, or more bombastic ones, like Lucius matching a feral monkey's freak in hand-to-paw combat. Leave your historical pedantry at the door for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/gladiator-ii-fact-fiction-ai-1236047785/">much-decried</a> Colosseum sharks.</p><p>Sillier combat experiences aside, the film derives most of its levity from Quinn and Hechinger's obscene twin emperors and Dundus, Caracalla's pet monkey. Mescal's performance, however, is grounded and more vindictive than Crowe's in the first film, and tips the balance toward Lucius feeling more like a successor to Maximus' mission than a carbon copy.</p><p>Ultimately, "Gladiator II" works better as an action flick than a focused historical drama. If you're here to watch Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal just absolutely go at it in the ring — or Denzel Washington gossip and plot his way through Roman court — you're in the right place. Just don't read too much into the broader narrative, and you'll be fine.</p><p><em>"Gladiator II" is in theaters on November 22.</em></p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Warner Bros. has kicked off its three-hour movie panel at Comic-Con Saturday and after bringing out the directors for its next several superhero movies, the studio revealed the first trailer for "Wonder Woman" online.</p><p>Right after its Comic-Con debut, Warner Bros., who has had trouble with leaked trailers online in the past, revealed the trailer online.</p><p>Starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, the film will tell the heroine's origin story. <p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">"Wonder Woman."</p>Yes, let the eye-rolling commence, but if I could explain myself...<p>Out of the countless superhero movies I have to consume ever year (and have watched in my life), there are only a handful that I completely enjoyed and thought were masterworks of the genre: "Superman," "Batman," "The Dark Knight." Now <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420941/?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Patty Jenkins</a>' "Wonder Woman" has made that small list.</p><p>Not only does "Wonder Woman" (opening in theaters Friday) power through the potential pitfalls of the modern-day superhero movie - weak plot, boring villain, lackluster third act - but it also shows once and for all that a female-focused superhero movie can be as strong, heroic, thrilling, and funny as the guys (and I predict, as profitable).</p><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.</p>Following her tease in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," in which she proved that she has the look to be a believable Wonder Woman, actress Gal Gadot gets to use her acting chops in this origin story.<p>Princess Diana of the Amazons starts out as a naive girl who dreams of being a great warrior like her mother Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and aunt General Antiope (Robin Wright), but is purposely being held back in her warrior training to keep an important truth about her a secret. However, when Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash-lands on the hidden island Wonder Woman lives on, Themyscira, she witnesses firsthand what the god of war Ares has done to man, and she sets out to destroy him and free mankind of his hold on them.</p><p>This is the make-or-break moment of the movie.</p><p>Jenkins has laid out a great setup with Diana's backstory: her thirst to be the warrior she was meant to be, some amazing CGI-fueled fight sequences. But what has ruined many superhero movies (yes, the DC ones, but also many Marvel titles) is the added human element. Jenkins uses a fish-out-of-water scene in which Steve takes Diana by boat to the front lines of World War I not just to bring some lighthearted moments to a mellow part of the movie, but also to start the groundwork for a relationship between Diana and Steve.</p><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Chris Pine is the movie's secret weapon.</p>It works perfectly and creates some very humorous moments as Diana tries to become accustomed to the world beyond Themyscira (especially when she's dumbfounded about why all the women are subservient to the men).<p>After Steve exposes Diana to the war (there's also the discovery of a dangerous gas the Germans plans to use on Allied Forces that Steve wants to stop), we get into Diana unveiling her Wonder Woman powers to the world with stunning fight sequences. A scene in which she takes on an entire Germany battalion in the middle of a muddy battlefield is one of the goose bump-inducing moments in the movie.</p><p>If you aren't sucked into the movie by this point, you should really check to make sure you have a pulse.</p><p>Obviously, Gadot as Wonder Woman is what's front and center in the movie, but I would be doing a disservice if I didn't gush about Chris Pine for a moment. He really is the secret weapon of the movie. With his dashing looks, self-deprecating humor, and red-hot chemistry with Gadot, he brings an important element to the movie that keeps it from being just a one-note actioner.</p><p>For all those reasons, I'm confident "Wonder Woman" is one of the best superhero movies ever made.
