While former finance minister P Chidambaram, and party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and <keyword id="6385492" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digvijaya-Singh">Digvijaya Singh</keyword> will be part of the economic affairs committee, Jairam Ramesh will be its convener. The committee on foreign affairs will have Anand Sharma, <keyword id="42749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shashi-Tharoor">Shashi Tharoor</keyword>, Salman Khurshid and Saptagiri Ulaka. Khurshid will be the convener of the panel. The committee on national security will have leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, party leaders Veerappa Moily, Vincent H Pala and V <keyword id="927122" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaithilingam">Vaithilingam</keyword>, with Pala as its convener. "The Congress president has constituted three committees to consider and discuss issues and policies related to the subjects of economic affairs, foreign affairs and national security," an official statement from AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said. Incidentally, among those nominated in the committees include senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Veerappa Moily and Shashi Tharoor, who were part of the 23 letter-writers seeking an organisational overhaul of the Congress. Sonia Gandhi sets up panel to discuss national security, economic and foreign affairs, Manmohan Singh to head all three panels

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> government is making all attempts to pass the crucial <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=GST+bill">Goods and Services Tax bill</a> in the second part of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/GST-Bill-Congress-stalls-proceedings-BJP-plays-blame-game/articleshow/48450674.cms">Monsoon Session</a>. 
 
The government is leaving no stone unturned to coax the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Congress">Congress party</a>-led Opposition, terming the bill in national interest. 
 
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu reached out to all parties and took their views on important bills. Despite all the attempt, some parties, especially the Congress, have refused to cooperate and created roadblocks in passage of bills which is affecting the growth of the economy, he said. 
 
"I once again appeal to all political parties to please think in national interest... This is very important in the backdrop of the current financial situation across the globe," Naidu said. 
 The government is worried that further delay in the passage of the <keyword id="387846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Bill">GST bill</keyword> will force further delay and failure to meet the April 1, 2016, deadline for the implementation of GST. 
 
Naidu also met the Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and spoke to Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, over the phone to seek support on The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Second) Amendment Bill. 
 
However, Congress showed no signs of support. 
 
Failing in all attempts, Naidu blamed the Congress president <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/US-court-dismisses-1984-riots-case-against-Sonia-Gandhi/articleshow/48678186.cms">Sonia Gandhi</a> and her son <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Congress-protest-enters-third-day-Rahul-Gandhi-says-oppositions-voice-is-being-suppressed/articleshow/48375421.cms">Rahul Gandhi</a> for the deadlock and accused them of harming the economy.

Barack Obama humiliated Indian politicians in his new memoir 'A Promised Land,' a senior lawyer claimed in a new civil suit

New Delhi, Jan 15 () Some senior Congress leaders who unsuccessfully contested the last year's Lok Sabha elections may find their names in the party's list of candidates for the Delhi assembly polls. Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra said the party will field its "best" candidates in the elections for the 70 Assembly seats in Delhi scheduled for February 8. In a meeting with senior leaders of Delhi unit, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday suggested that those active in electoral politics should contest the Assembly polls. The meeting was attended by many senior leaders including former Delhi Congress presidents Ajay Maken, JP Agarwal and Arvinder Lovely, and working president Rajesh Lilothia, all four of whom were fielded by the party in the Lok Sabha polls. Agarwal said that he will follow instructions of the party chief. "There is no reason why we should not do what Congress chief desires us to do," he said. Agarwal was a runner-up in the Lok Sabha election from Chandni Chowk. He was also a former MLA from the Chandni Chowk Assembly segment. Lilothia, too, expressed his willingness to contest the Assembly election as per directions of Gandhi. During the meeting with the Congress chief, he had offered himself to be fielded against Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Kejriwal in New Delhi seat. Congress sources said that Lovely too was inclined to contest the polls as demanded by the party high command. Lovely was not available for his comments. He was defeated from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat by BJP's Gautam Gambhir. Maken is also expected to follow suit although he had some "reservations" on fighting the Assembly polls. He was a runner up in New Delhi parliamentary seat in elections last year. The central election committee of Congress is likely to meet on Thursday to discuss the names of party candidates for the Assembly elections. The ruling AAP on Tuesday declared all its 70 candidates. The BJP is also expected to announce its candidates for the polls in next few days.

But the Indian National Congress is not too far from the fray either. Local heavyweights like Arvinder Singh Lovely are preparing for war. The 52-year old Congress politician, Singh was Delhi’s youngest MLA in 1998, when he was 30. Since then, Singh held on to his seat from the Gandhi Nagar constituency of Delhi and won three more Assembly elections. He is once again hoping for a win from Gandhi Nagar. According to <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/delhi-assembly-elections-sonia-meets-cong-leaders-6215026/">reports</a>, Congress President Sonia Gandhi was pushing the party’s popular leaders including Singh to contest this election. Singh is the election management committee head. As a young face in Congress, Singh also held a ministerial position under late Sheila Dikshit, the former Delhi CM. He held portfolios like education, urban development and revenue, transport, languages, tourism, gurudwara election, local bodies and gurudwara administration. He was also the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. But his relationship with Congress had many twists and turns. In 2017, Singh left the party to join the BJP. “I had given 31 years to the party but what did I get in the end? Nothing. I was not even included in the core committee set up for the municipal elections,” he had then <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi/former-state-congress-chief-arvinder-singh-joins-bjp-ahead-of-mcd-elections/story-eli7yIYrDrIU2BhKXaPT6M.html">told reporters</a>. Soon after, Singh found his way back to the Congress, citing ideological differences with the BJP. Arvinder Singh Lovely of Congress sees a sad loss from Gandhi Nagar

In a setback to Gandhis, the Delhi High Court has summoned Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi in connection with <keyword id="2376868" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Herald-case">National Herald case</keyword>. 
 
The high court refused to stay a summons order passed against them and has asked them to be present in a lower court on Tuesday. 
 
Judge Sunil Gaur also refused to grant the Gandhis exemption from appearance. 
 
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, in his petition, has accused the Gandhis of grabbing the properties owned by National Herald by buying over its publishers through an outfit in which the Gandhis hold 86% stake.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul summoned to appear in lower court in National Herald case

Congress scion <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> has again caused a major embarrassment to his party, after he was seen catching a nap during a vital heated debate over recent attacks on Dalits in Gujarat. 
 
As Union Minister Rajnath Singh gave his speech in the Lok Sabha session, one could see Gandhi dozing off in the back. Even though the members of parliaments were shouting and raising their objections, the 46-year old was unperturbed. 
 The images, after they were shown on news channels, have gone viral on social media, completely sidelining Congress President <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword>’s attack on the Modi government. 
 
"In the last few months, we have witnessed how the Modi Government's project of destabilising institutions and polarising our society has played out with renewed vigour to the detriment of constitutional values. 
 
"The Modi Government has mistaken its parliamentary majority for a licence to impose its ideology on our people. It seems to have forgotten that parliamentary majority can never be the reason to abandon the principles and practice of constitutionalism," she had said.
