NEW DELHI: <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, the world’s largest social media company, has crossed 100 million active users in India -- the second country, after the United States, in which it has done so. “We crossed the landmark on March 31,” Javier Olivan, vice-president, growth &amp; analytics, Facebook, told ET on a video call from its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on April 7. 
 
The ascent of Facebook in India has been speedy and has been powered by the mobile phone. When the American company set up its first India office in 2010, in Hyderabad, it had 8 million users in the country. Further, according to Facebook, 84 million of its 100 million users in India access the social networking site from their mobile devices. 
 
Facebook, which was set up in 2004, had 1.23 billion users across the world, as of December 31, 2013. “If Facebook continues its current growth trajectory, we can see it as a core communications tool for the world,” says Neha Dharia, analyst with UK-based research firm Ovum. “This besides being a media platform where users can share and engage in a range of media such as videos, pictures and games. We expect to see a stronger move around storage (cloud-based) and utility services from Facebook.”

 For Facebook, the US remains its biggest market, with about 183 million users, though perhaps not for long, given the inflexion point India is at with regards to Internet usage, especially on the mobile. According to Olivan, who is one of the three people in the company who report directly to founder <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword>, Facebook is now “looking forward” to 1 billion users in India, a numerical figure it intends to chase with specific initiatives aimed at increasing connectivity, affordability and relevance. “That (1 billion) is a different focus and challenge,” he says. 
 
Olivan says much of the challenge of going from 1 million to 10 million in India was about optimising the product for users. For example, removing the condition that a user needed to have an email ID of an American college to access Facebook. From 10 million to 100 million, he adds, it was about improving experience on low-end devices and offering it in languages other than English. “For 1 billion, we need easy connectivity, the biggest challenge of our generation,” he says. 
 
One of the initiatives it is focused on to widen connectivity is internet.org, a partnership it has with six mobile technology companies to provide affordable Internet access to the unconnected. It is also working with telecom companies to increase data adoption among users in emerging markets like India. On this trajectory, it’s only a matter of time before the Facebook user base in India crosses that of the US.

With an investment plan of over Rs 1,000 crore, Japanese automobile major <keyword id="1374901" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Cars-India-Ltd">Honda Cars India Ltd</keyword> is in talks with the <keyword id="6370685" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Government">Gujarat government</keyword> to come up with a car manufacturing plant near Ahmedabad district’s Vithalapur village, a senior government official told PTI. 
 
The proposal, which is in final stage of consideration, may soon get a green signal from the state government. 
 
According to a PTI report, “Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Ltd (HSMI) had three months back announced establishing the world’s largest scooter plant at the same village, 110 kilometres away from Vithalapur village.” 
 “The proposal is in the final stage and would get approval of the state cabinet under our Mega Industrial Policy within next few weeks time. <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> will invest at least Rs 1,000 crore to set up car manufacturing plant near Vithalapur,” the official added. 
 
It’s is worth noting that this will be second major investment by Honda in Gujarat.

Honda To Set Up A New Car Manufacturing Plant In Gujarat

Handsets maker <keyword id="1395988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Celkon-Mobiles">Celkon Mobiles</keyword> today inaugurated its Rs. 200 crore manufacturing facility in Telangana with a vision to increase the unit’s capacity from two lakh handsets per month to five lakh units in the next three months. 
 
 "We will be investing Rs 200 crore in the facility in the first phase. Currently, four production lines are used to produce about two lakh handsets a month," Celkon Mobiles Executive Director <keyword id="1876224" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Murali-Retineni">Murali Retineni</keyword> told. 
 
 
He added that work is going on for eight more production lines, which will be operational in three months, and five lakh handsets will be produced at the facility. 
 
Retineni said going forward, the company plans to shift its entire production to the country. 
 
"As of now, feature phones, entry-level and mid-level smartphones will be produced at the facility but going forward, we plan to produce all phones here," he added. 
 
The manufacturing unit, situated in Medchal, Telangana, is spread across 30,000 sq ft. 
 
Additionally, the facility will also contain a 10,000 sq ft warehouse for raw material and a 5,000 sq ft warehouse for finished products, the company said. 
 
 
Around 60 per cent of the mobile phones manufactured in the facility, which is ISO certified, will comprise of feature phones and the rest will be smartphones. 
 
The unit will employ 500 people consisting of trained and skilled technicians. 
 
"We are elated to be amongst the first few smartphone players starting our manufacturing operations in India. We envision the country to become a hub for manufacturing cutting edge devices and have been pursuing the cause for the last few years," Celkon Mobiles Chairman and Managing Director Y Guru said.

Celkon inaugurates Rs. 200 crore manufacturing facility in Telangana

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="46362" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Motors">Honda Motors</keyword>, which is swearing by scooters in India, is setting up the world’s largest scooter plant in Gujarat to roll out 12 lakh units annually and achieve leadership position in the Indian two-wheeler market, especially with a growing number of customers shifting to this unisex multi-utility mode that has caught the fancy of many and outpaced almost every other segment. 
 Scooter sales have jumped by 29% in the ongoing fiscal, and now form 27% of the total two-wheeler market from just 8% a decade back. The ever-rising demand for scooters that has far outstripped supply has prompted <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> to set up its first dedicated scooter plant in Ahmedabad. “Even as we have more than doubled our scooter capacity in India, we have not been able to match up with the demand. 
 
After 13 years of its launch, Activa continues to be on ‘waiting’ even as competition has multiplied ten times,” said YS Guleria, Honda VP for marketing and sales in India. Honda had fired the imagination of scooter lovers with its Activa — launched way back in 2001. 
 
“Even though we raised our production with three new scooters, demand still outstrips our estimates. While scooter production has trebled in the past decade, we still have a backlog of 60,000 scooters that should multiply in the festive months ahead,” Guleria added. Honda would spend Rs 1,100 crore on the new plant in Ahmedabad, and expand its range with a few more offerings. 
 
The company, which leads the scooter market with a 53% share in the domestic market, would have two assembly lines for scooters, which would create 3,000 more jobs. The fourth plant would enhance its cumulative production capacity in India to 58 lakh units by 2015-16, including 16 lakh from its first plant in Haryana, 12 lakh from the one in Rajasthan, and 18 lakh from the Karnataka plant. 
 
The sales from its Indian subsidiary have already climbed to the second spot for Honda’s two-wheeler business worldwide, and it believes that the fourth plant would help India become its top global market. Honda’s decision for a dedicated scooter plant is backed by an overwhelming response to its five scooter brands which have been runaway successes in India. 
 
In fact, all big auto companies — <keyword id="6357252" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hero-MotoCorp">Hero MotoCorp</keyword>, <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword>, Yamaha, TVS Motors and M&amp;M — are planning to expand in an effort to cash in on the exploding demand. They have gained from a surge in sales in the first quarter that has helped the segment post record high sales of 1.01 million units in the April-June ended period. Scooters grew 23% to sell 3.60 million units in the fiscal ended March. 
 
Analystssaid that the new generation automatic scooters, that are unisex in nature and are fuel efficient, have helped them grow manifold over the more traditional roughand-tough bikes. “Going by the shift, they (scooters) are expected to corner a third of the market,” said Deepesh Rathore, director at EMMAAA , a Delhibased consultancy firm.

Honda To Set Up World’s Largest Scooter Plant In Gujarat

NEW DELHI: American sportswear firm <keyword id="115328" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nike-Inc">Nike Inc</keyword> has filed for setting up a wholly owned subsidiary in India to sell its own brand of products. 
 <keyword id="2498149" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nike-India-Pvt-Ltd">Nike India Pvt Ltd</keyword> has filed the application with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion on August 29, the department’s website showed. 
 <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword> entered India about two decades ago and currently operate through around 400 franchised stores in the country. According to the filling, it now plans to open its own flagship stores. 
 IKEA and <keyword id="771163" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hennes-Mauritz">Hennes &amp; Mauritz</keyword> are among other prominent firms that are aiming to set up shop in India since the nation removed investment barriers for foreign single-brand retailers in 2012.

Nike Seeks To Set Up Fully Owned India Unit

Focusing on three key segments - <keyword id="6377036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="smart-cities">smart cities</keyword>, <keyword id="2892770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smart-communication">smart communication</keyword> systems and <keyword id="142962" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Security-Solutions">security solutions</keyword>, Indian multinational conglomerate <keyword id="45475" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> has come up with a new unit to cater to these segments. The business is likely to grow by $1 billion in next 3 to 4 years. 

	The government has big plans to push businesses in the three segments, therefore the Mumbai-headquartered engineering and construction company has formed a separate business unit, named Smart World and Communication, according to an Economic Times report. 
 

	The unit would tap the resources of the conglomerate's various verticals and subsidiaries to offer wholesome solutions in a first-of-its-kind initiative, a company official said. 
 

	"We have put together a small unit with 65 members which includes people from different verticals within the company and some people who have been especially hired for this," SN Subrahmanyan, board member and senior executive vice president (infrastructure and construction), told the financial daily. 
 

	The business unit is currently small but can become a strategic unit over a period of time if it receives orders. It can easily become a $1 billion business in 3-4 years, he said. 
 

	L&amp;T has diversified businesses ranging from technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing to financial services. It has done such projects in bits and pieces and now wants to leverage on the synergy among different businesses to execute turnkey solutions.
 

	"The government is talking about setting up 100 smart cities, even if 20 came up we will hopefully get big orders," Subrahmanyan said. 
 "In a way, we have been doing such projects as gated campuses for IT companies. We would now like to bid for bigger projects such as the one planned for the <keyword id="6369995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bandra-Kurla-Complex">Bandra-Kurla Complex</keyword> in Mumbai,” he said. 

	The Centre plans to spend Rs 1 lakh crore to build smart cities by 2020. These cities would have affordable housing in a cost-efficient and environment-friendly physical, social and institutional infrastructure set up for a better quality of living. 
 

	The Bandra-Kurla Complex is set to become the first smart district with Maharashtra state authorities calling for bids to complete the project by March next year.

We got a chance to catch up with Rajesh Magow, <keyword id="170488" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="co-founder">Co-Founder</keyword> and CEO-India, <keyword id="143717" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Makemytrip-com">MakeMyTrip.com</keyword> and he told us some interesting facts about the journey so far and why did the company decide to raise this fund. 
 
MakeMyTrip has grown by leaps and bounds. Can you give BI India readers a small glimpse of the MMT’s journey till date? 
 
MakeMyTrip.com was founded in the year 2000. Deep Kalra (Founder) conceptualized it with the idea to empower Indian travellers through choice, flexibility and transparency of pricing. The travel industry in 2000 had not achieved momentum yet. There were a couple of websites that offered air-tickets but none that could comprehensively claim to cater across categories (LCCs and full-service) and offer Best Deal and Lowest Airfare Guarantee. 
 
Upon launching the first version of the site in October 2000, we received a favourable response from the US. In India however, travellers were more inclined to research online, but make the actual buying decision using traditional modes of payment. We had to take a hard call to stop all marketing in India; on hindsight this turned out to be one of the best decisions for the company. By focusing solely on the NRI market, we managed to conserve precious marketing dollars while our competitors burnt their fingers in a pre-mature online market. 
 
After consolidating our position in the market as a brand recognized for its reliability and transparency, we launched our India operations in 2005. As the pioneer among Online Travel Companies in India, MakeMyTrip heralded a revolution in the way travel was purchased in India – and soon became the go-to website for booking travel. In 2010 we became the first Indian travel company to list overseas through a successful IPO on NASDAQ. 
 
Today, we are the dominant market-leader with 47% market-share (per a study conducted by PhocusWright in 2013). 
 
MMT like many others has started a venture fund, what was the reason behind it? 
 
We have announced the institution of a $15 million Innovation Fund primarily to support early stage companies/ start-ups in the travel technology space with a special focus on Mobile and IP-based companies. The fund will be focused on young and new ventures in the travel technology space for our market. 
 
This initiative is an additional prong of our inorganic growth strategy of pursuing M&amp;A opportunities in the travel technology space. We intend to purposefully go out and look for such companies and take early stage positions. 
 
What is MMT expectations from this venture funding? 
 
We are excited about the Technology talent in the global marketplace and how it can be leveraged to serve customer needs. We are hopeful that this initiative will encourage entrepreneurs building niche companies in the travel technology domain. 
 
What are the future plans for MMT besides this? 
 
We are already the largest travel company in the country and the largest eCommerce business, recognized for providing the best value-based offerings. In the mid to long-term, we intend to use our core strength i.e. technology to innovate, provide best-in-class service and delight customers.

Fanatics <a href="http://fanaticsinc.com/about/our_history/" target="_blank">launched in 1995</a> as a store selling merchandise for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fanatics launched an e-commerce website in 1997, and eventually partnered with the major American sports leagues and college sports leagues to build their online apparel marketplaces.But as Fanatics became a success in the e-commerce world, it needed to get good at tech.So, in 2014, Fanatics hired <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/one-kings-lane-may-sell-for-150-million-or-less-2016-1" target="_blank">One Kings Lane CEO</a> Doug Mack to lead the company. Mack peppered Fanatics' executive suite with Silicon Valley veterans and said that the company would build out its own technology and turn its focus to data and analytics to understand what apparel fans are buying and why. The new products would be an extension of Amazon's Elements brand, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-elements-premium-products-for-prime-members-2014-12">launched in December</a>, with two products, diapers and baby wipes, the latter of which shut down in January after lukewarm customer response. Elements products are only available to Amazon Prime members, who pay a $99 annual membership fee. Since these are food products, Amazon could face more questions around the quality of its manufacturing process. But all Amazon Elements products reveal information about ingredients and when and where they were manufactured.It's unclear why exactly Amazon is moving into this category now, but the WSJ report says it will help the company increase its profit margins because private label products generally cost less to advertise and distribute. To provide easy <keyword id="6362287" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="loans">loans</keyword> to purchase houses and start small businesses, <keyword id="6357560" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IDBI-Bank">IDBI Bank</keyword> has decided to launch <keyword id="2858743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-huts">e-huts</keyword>, which will help people from rural areas to come forward and join mainstream businesses. 
 
"We will be launching e-huts across the country. It's a concept that is widely accepted in the West, but in India, it's yet to pick up," IDBI's Deputy Managing Director M O Rego said Tuesday in a press meet in Goa. 
 
The bank would extend its support to medium and small enterprises in the state for which the lending has increased by 48%. 
 
Rego inaugurated two more branches in the state situated in Candolim and Chinchim. 
 The new branches are in line with the bank's strategy to strengthen its home and Micro, Small and <keyword id="126907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medium-Enterprises">Medium Enterprises</keyword> (MSME) loan portfolio in the state, Rego told PTI. 
 He further said IDBI has recorded impressive growth in the region with 22% growth in <keyword id="2859046" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="current-accounts-and-saving-accounts">current accounts and saving accounts</keyword> (CASA) in Goa with the total deposits grew by 16% in the previous financial year. 
 
He said the structured retail assets, which include home loans as the largest component, recorded a jump of 66% in Goa.
