I'd met a guru who actually made <a href="https://www.insider.com/meditation-definition">meditating</a> — once grueling — seem easy. Feelings of inner tranquility soothed the loneliness and <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-depression">depression</a> I had been struggling with since high school. I was driven to master well-being through the practices of selfless service, chanting, and meditation. One morning, after a rigorous 90-minute chant, my inner bliss was interrupted when the guy who ladled out the oatmeal asked, "When do you get a break?" I froze. I didn't want to get involved. I wanted to follow the rules.And the rules were clear: <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-you-dont-have-sex-what-happens-to-your-body-2020-6">No sex on ashram grounds</a>. According to ancient scriptures, orgasm and sexual release diffused the spiritual energy that a seeker, through meditation and other spiritual practices, could cultivate to achieve enlightenment — a permanent state of inner bliss. <h2>By following the rules, I was exacerbating the problem I was there to solve</h2>Ashram life forced me into an age-old battle between spiritual aspirations and carnal desire. I was there to heal, but I didn't know that in depriving myself, I was also creating an <a href="https://www.psypost.org/2018/05/attempts-suppress-sexual-thoughts-result-increase-thoughts-51306">unhealthy mind-body split</a> that increased my shame and exacerbated my loneliness. I fantasized about becoming a monk. The meditation, vegetarian diet, and walking between buildings made me feel lighter and boosted my self-esteem. Maybe it was because sex was forbidden, but I found myself flirting with adorable ashram guys. In addition to the oatmeal guy, there was the strapping, sandy-haired Englishman, who lit up my entire being when we went toe-to-toe in ridiculously flirtatious arguments about spiritual dogma. There was the former graphic designer who often put his meal tray down at my table and who immediately felt like family, probably because he was old enough to be my father. There was the dashing charm of the practically 10-foot tall, ex-model turned massage therapist, with blue eyes and a grin that turned my insides to mush.I tried to shoo away my desire and practice what I was there to learn: being with my Self. But it wasn't easy. And the oatmeal ladler was persistent. "I can tell you're just coming from the morning chant," he said as he plopped oats in my bowl. "You always radiate when you come from chanting."He had a joyful face with almond-shaped eyes that sparkled behind his glasses, but he wasn't my type. He was short with long curly hair. Nevertheless, we started hanging out. And my steady state of mind went up in flames. <h2>I really didn't want to break the rules</h2>Living in the ashram was a fishbowl existence. We all worked, meditated, and dined in the same space. The joke was that if people saw a couple walking or dining together more than three times, they were engaged. People glared as we strolled through the courtyard. I felt ashamed. I was scared the guru would find out; I didn't want to incur bad karma.One day on a walk, he leaned in to kiss me. I pushed him away. I told myself that his hippie-rocker look was reason enough to reject him and was relieved when he backed off. But months later, the relief was replaced by deep loneliness. By then, he was openly dating someone else. I was surprised by how much I missed him.After a year, my fantasies of becoming a monk were slowly being replaced by fantasies of living in the world again. I heard a rumor that the founder of the ashram — my teacher's so-called enlightened and celibate guru — had molested young women. I sensed there was truth in the rumors and felt nauseous for days. I decided to leave. Ashram living had given me community, valuable tools, and self-knowledge. But when the <a href="https://www.salon.com/2010/08/14/eat_pray_love_guru_sex_scandals/">rumors were confirmed</a> in an <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1994/11/14/o-guru-guru-guru">investigative New Yorker piece</a>, I realized that idealizing others, and the notion of enlightenment wielded by this particular ashram, were harmful myths. Self-mastery doesn't come from suppressing desire. It comes from embracing our humanity, in all its contradictions.

I moved to an ashram to become enlightened. But suppressing my desire for men led to more of the loneliness I'd come to heal.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>My mother left me twice to go live in an <keyword id="12715487" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ashram" source="Orion">ashram</keyword>, once when I was 6 and then again when I was 12. </li><li>When I was an adult, she told me her leader felt children were obstacles. </li></ul>To this day, if someone says ashram, I get the shivers. When I was 6 years old, my mother left for the one her guru, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Bhagwan-Shree-Rajneesh">Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh</a> created in Pune, India, and when I was 12, she left again for Rajneeshpuram, his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBLS_OM6Puk&amp;t=136s">ashram in Oregon</a>. She, like his other <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-people-join-cults-according-to-therapist-who-treats-survivors-2020-9">sannyasins or followers</a>, donned <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fthe-latest-fashion-trend-dressing-like-youre-in-a-cult-1522688672">sunset-colored clothing</a> and a black-beaded necklace around her neck, with a photo of his face dangling from the end. What I didn't know until I was grown and had children of my own is that he was also known as the "sex guru". Bhagwan espoused sex as the first step to "superconsciousness" and encouraged his sannyasins to embrace a celebratory, free-love kind of <keyword id="11893304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lifestyle" source="Orion">lifestyle</keyword>.My <a href="https://www.insider.com/growing-up-in-kibbutz-in-israel-affected-my-whole-life-2022-1">mother was on a spiritual journey</a> and went to the ashrams with an urgency to improve herself, to become a better person and a more evolved parent, she explained to me later. She didn't want to suffer or be in pain anymore.When I was grown and had <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-grew-up-in-a-cult-and-i-can-tell-you-why-normal-people-join-them-2018-3">children</a> of my own she told me that "Bhagwan taught that children were obstacles to enlightenment." My heart stopped as all of the dots connected. It must have been so much easier to quit being a parent when your spiritual leader recommended it. <h2>Children needed to be avoided</h2>By the mid to late 1970s, about six thousand sannyasins — mostly Westerners — lived and worked on and around his six-acre ashram in Pune. He lectured every day, and sannyasins were tasked with whatever jobs, menial or otherwise, needed doing. Sannyasins took part in therapy groups where, in the early days of the ashram, sex and violence were documented to have been used to help followers reach "breakthroughs" on their paths to awareness.Incredibly, given the reports of violence and sexual assault that eventually came out about life in the Pune ashram, my mother doesn't recall any of that in the therapy groups and workshops she participated in. It may be that she arrived in Pune after those methods were discontinued.Most crucially to my story, and so many others whose parents followed him, Bhagwan felt children were to be avoided whenever possible as they made spiritual growth difficult to attain. In fact, he encouraged <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/world/escaping-the-bhagwan-20090411-a35u.html">sterilization</a> and vasectomies for sannyasins. The object of the game was to unencumber yourself so you could become the person you were meant to be.<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/apr/24/wild-wild-country-netflix-cult-sex-noa-maxwell-bhagwan-shree-rajneesh-commune-childhood">Some children did live at Rajneeshpuram</a>, but they weren't looked after much. While their parents swapped partners, participated in meditation sessions, worked on the ashram, and lined up along a one-lane road waiting for the moment when Bhagwan would drive by in one of his ninety-six Rolls Royces, hoping for a glimpse of their master, kids fended for themselves, roamed the property, and were housed separately from their parents. <h2>Eventually, the reality of the ashram came out</h2>Disturbing news from the ashram eventually made headlines, like the considerable arsenal of automatic weapons on the property, poisonings, and how its inner circle was responsible for the <a href="https://gizmodo.com/the-largest-bioterrorism-attack-in-us-history-was-an-at-1788407782">largest bioterror attack on US soil</a>.But there was also abject child neglect, and <a href="https://aeon.co/essays/lost-innocence-the-children-whose-parents-joined-an-ashram">sexualization</a> and grooming of <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/04/beyond-the-spectacle-of-wild-wild-country/558668/">children</a> by adults. Stories of vulnerable ashram children who were mostly unsupervised have been circulating for years: children dressed improperly for the elements, sustaining serious injuries, <a href="https://medium.com/@dickonkent/what-wild-wild-country-didn-t-say-57-questions-answered-by-a-teenage-rajneeshpuram-resident-a1d32821a5f8">modeling sexual behavior</a> on the adults they saw around them, girls as young as 11-year-old in "relationships" with grown men.Ashram life requires members to eschew their autonomy and personal boundaries, which is a dangerous blueprint for children who rely on responsible caregivers to protect them as they develop healthy boundaries and their senses of self. Add promiscuity and lack of supervision to the mix and you get nothing but trouble for children. Kids were the opposite of taken care of; the opposite of safe. I've spoken to former sannyasins who lived on Rajneeshpuram, and they told me I was lucky my mother didn't take me to the ashram, that I was better off than the kids they saw growing up there. As much as I missed my mother, as much as her leaving twice impacted my whole life, at least I wasn't left to fend for myself or be sexually abused. I think about those kids and wonder how they are now. <ul class="summary-list"><li>My parents moved from New York City to a <keyword id="13037324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kibbutz" source="Orion">kibbutz</keyword> in Israel. </li><li>There I was placed in a children's group and only saw my parents a few hours a day. </li></ul>I was a mother myself before I thought about — really thought about — how spending my first years on a <a href="https://archive.jewishagency.org/first-home-homeland/program/16766">kibbutz in Israel</a> affected my whole life.These days many kibbutzim have been privatized, but back when I was growing up, they were intentional, socialist communities often based on agriculture like Kibbutz Lahav, the one where I lived. My father and mother were New Yorkers by birth but wanted fresh starts for themselves far away from their childhoods in the Bronx and Brooklyn respectively.On our kibbutz in the Negev desert, my father worked the fields planting wheat, and my mother was in charge of the kitchen that served three meals a day to the 200 plus-person community.When they had me, my mother was 24, my father was 26, and they were still a safe handful of years away from the move, divorce, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-grew-up-in-a-cult-and-i-can-tell-you-why-normal-people-join-them-2018-3">cult</a> that would lead to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-people-join-cults-according-to-therapist-who-treats-survivors-2020-9">breakup of my family</a>. <h2>The kibbutz was my safe place when I was young</h2>Before I understood or even had an inkling that people leave — even people who are supposed to take care of you, the kibbutz was my Eden.My father brought me out for walks on his shoulders, and we visited the kibbutz horses in the farm area, and I got to pet geese and hold downy newborn goats, their velvet ears flopping around their dazed faces. I walked the paved sunlit paths in any direction I chose — often by myself because I was safe alone.And every afternoon I joined my parents on the lawn in front of our home to sit with our friends and have cookies, fruit, and tea while a gentle breeze blew across the hillside, even in the summer. Afternoons on the lawn were my favorite time, near my mother who chatted happily with the other women while I played with my friends. <h2>I saw my parents only a couple of hours a day</h2>On the kibbutz in those days, babies spent the first six weeks in their parents' flat and were then moved to the Beit Tinokot, the children's house. The kibbutz children's house system was part of an early-20th-century model designed to enable women to be equal partners with men, to liberate them from having to stay home doing domestic chores.Kibbutz life was designed to maximize productivity in its working adults during the day and give parents plenty of time off from child-rearing in the evenings when they gathered together, unencumbered. Apart from the few hours a day we kids spent with our parents, we were in the children's house in sleeping rooms with children our age with whom we shared meals, clothing, nap times, and toys. We traveled as a group, like a litter of pups, and kibbutz women assigned to our group, not our moms and dads, took care of us. <keyword id="11910745" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="parenting" source="Orion">Parenting</keyword> within a short window of time has to be less frustrating for the adults than navigating their kids' wants and moods and desires, minute after minute, day after day. In a way, it protected all of us from needing one another too much. With so many people to support you, you might not ever have to know how you felt about your marriage, the fact that you were a parent, or even yourself. During my earliest years, being apart from my parents was natural, and I didn't have a chance to fully attach the way small children usually do. Maybe if we had stayed on the kibbutz, my parents might not have gotten divorced, my mother might not have left to follow a guru. Trust in key institutions has tanked. Millions of people still don't believe President Joe Biden won the 2020 election fair and square. And former President <keyword id="11914386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="donald-trump" source="Orion">Donald Trump</keyword> and his Republican allies continue to push false claims on 2020, as they simultaneously vie to whitewash the deadly riot at the Capitol on <keyword id="11897870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="january-6" source="Orion">January 6</keyword>, 2021. "We're in a mess," Russia expert Fiona Hill said in a conversation with Insider on Wednesday that focused heavily on the state of US democracy. Hill, who served as the top Russia advisor on the National Security Council under the Trump administration, warned that the distrust in the electoral process fomented by Trump and those close to him has created a "recipe for communal violence." The US could ultimately "end up in a civil conflict," she added. "Some people have said that might have been our last fair election in 2020. And it's disastrous because that means that a portion of the population will always believe that whoever got elected is illegitimate," Hill said.The US has reached a point where "trust in the different communities and authorities" has broken down "to such an extent that people just start fighting with each other," Hill said.Some academics have contended that the US is already experiencing a slow-moving civil war or is heading toward insurgency — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/civil-war-expert-barbara-f-walter-us-heading-toward-insurgency-2022-7">the 21st century version of civil war.</a> When asked if she agreed, Hill said, "I've said that myself at times and I've dialed it back a bit. She saw firsthand how Trump <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiona-hill-trump-has-a-bad-case-of-autocrat-envy-2021-10">sought to emulate autocratic leaders</a> like Putin. In her 2021 memoir, "There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century," Hill wrote that Trump "may have paved the way for another, less personally insecure and more capable populist president — someone who actually did his or her homework and was skilled in project management — to pull a Putin in America." Hill said the Russian president "took the constitution's presidential powers and ran with them" and also "enhanced them to the point of extending his own term in office essentially indefinitely," warning that it could also happen in the US. Asked if she was still worried that someone could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hill-trump-paved-way-for-someone-to-pull-putin-us-2021-10">"pull a Putin"</a> in the US and move it toward autocracy, Hill told Insider, "I'm very concerned about it."Many Republicans continue to run for office "on the back of the lie that the January 6th committee has really tried very hard to refute," or the false notion that the election was stolen from Trump, Hill said.Some of the people who will run for the GOP nomination in 2024, including those who could potentially beat Trump, if he chooses to make another bid for the White House, have "not refuted what he's said and never recognized Biden as a legitimate president," she said. It would be "disastrous" if Trump runs and wins again "on that basis," and equally as bad if another Republican candidate who "helped enable this or perpetuate it and is tapping into it" wins, Hill warned.The GOP today is not the Republican party of old, Hill said, stating that it has all the "hallmarks" of authoritarianism. "I am not a partisan person, but it's a little bit hard to take a neutral stance," Hill said, noting that people in the UK have described the Republican party to her as "a charismatic satanic death cult."The Democratic party is not unworthy of criticism, Hill said, but it's also not "trying to undermine the overall democratic system.""Right now it has to be said that the Republican party, the congressional Republican party, so it seems, so it would appear, is hellbent on undermining democracy to exert minority rule," she added. Hill, who was pushed into the national spotlight as a key witness during the House impeachment inquiry into Trump's dealings with Ukraine, said she's been closely following the hearings held by the House select committee investigating January 6. She said the committee has made a compelling case so far. "But it doesn't mean that everybody else is watching and is being persuaded," Hill said, adding, "We've become so polarized and partisan."To reverse course, Hill said, everybody needs to stand up and work at strengthening America's democracy."Everybody's individually got to think about what can they do in this moment, and really look at things long and hard about the kind of country that they want to live in," Hill said.

At first, archaeologists thought the tubes were scepters, or maybe poles for holding up a canopy.But archaeologist Viktor Trifonov had a different theory. The researchers could not figure out whether the barley had been fermented, but its presence inside the straw suggests its users were drinking beer."If the interpretation is correct, these fancy devices would be the earliest surviving drinking straws to date," Trifonov, who works at the Institute for the History of Material Culture at the Russian Academy of Sciences, said in a press release.<h2>Straws allowed ancient people to share big jugs of beer</h2><div type="image" title="illustrated figure shows human silhouettes drinking from a jug with long straws" height="933" width="1594" msid="89158865" hostid="261"></div>Ancient Sumerian art depicts several long straws sticking out of a communal vessel with people surrounding it. Trifonov's team thinks that Maikop people used their straws similarly. It's akin to a modern-day shared party bowl.The researchers also found a large vessel at Maikop kurgan, which they believe could be the party bowl itself. There's no evidence that it was used for beer, but it could hold enough liquid for eight straw-drinkers to sip seven pints. New Delhi, Apr 21 () Cautioning people against giving communal colour to the coronavirus pandemic, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has said such behaviour could explode and make it much harder for different communities to get along. Rajan's comments come in the wake allegations that Tabligh-e-Jamat members violated social distancing guidelines and ignored all instructions by organising a massive gathering last month at their centre in Nizamuddin area of Delhi. The gathering is believed to have emerged as a super-spreader of coronavirus with thousands of cases across the country linked to Jamat members. So far, coronavirus has infected around 19,000 people and took over 600 lives in the country. "We see in India that some allegation that this was a Muslim plot. I mean, that kind of behaviour can explode and make much harder for her communities to get together within her country," Rajan said while speaking at the University of Chicago's virtual Harper Lecture series. Rajan along with 11 others has recently been appointed to an external advisory group of IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva to provide perspectives from around the globe on key developments and policy issues, including responses to the exceptional challenges the world now faces due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rajan, 57, who headed RBI for three years until September 2016, said nationalism that was already pretty strong before the virus is getting accentuated by the effects of COVID-19. Citing an example, he said, "China points finger at the US and says that was US intelligence plot and the US points finger at China and says that this was concocted by China." Rajan, who is currently working as a professor at the prestigious University of Chicago, said no part of the world is immune to COVID-19. "Everywhere in world is going to be affected, (and) global supply chain has been disrupted for some time. In the second quarter of calendar year 2020, we can see decline in GDP by 30-40 per cent," he said. Despite rebound in economic activities in the second half of 2020, global economic growth will still be negative for the year, he said. New Delhi, Jan 17 () Aadhaar will be required for getting benefits under a central government scheme for providing financial assistance to family members of victims of violence perpetrated by terrorists or naxals, and communal riots.
 In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said an eligible beneficiary desirous of receiving the benefit under the 'Central Scheme for Assistance to Civilian Victims/Family of Victims of Terrorist/Communal/LWE Violence and Cross Border Firing and Mine/IED Blasts on Indian Territory' is required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication.
 Any eligible beneficiary desirous of receiving benefit under the scheme, who does not possess the Aadhaar number or, has not yet enrolled for Aadhaar, shall have to apply for Aadhaar enrolment.
 The home ministry said the notification comes into effect in all states and union territories except Assam and Meghalaya, where Aadhaar has not covered all residents.
 "The assistance is given by the state governments and the home ministry reimburses the state governments when it gets their demand. The annual budget for the scheme is broadly in the range of Rs 6 to 7 crore," a senior home ministry official said.
 The notification said the ministry through the implementing agency is required to offer Aadhaar enrolment facilities for the eligible beneficiary, who is not yet enrolled for Aadhaar and in case there is no Aadhaar enrolment centre located in the respective Block or Taluka or Tehsil.
 Till the time Aadhaar is assigned to the beneficiary, benefit under the scheme shall be given to such beneficiary subject to the production of the Aadhaar enrolment identification slip if he or she has enrolled and any one of the following: bank or post office passbook with photo; or voter identification card; or PAN card; or ration card; or passport; or kisan photo passbook; or driving licence or certificate of identity having photo of such person issued by a gazetted officer or a tehsildar on an official letter head; or Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Job Card; or any other document as specified by the ministry.
 In order to provide convenient and hassle free benefit to the beneficiary under the scheme, the ministry through the implementing agency or other means shall make all the required arrangements to ensure that wide publicity through media is given to the beneficiary to make them aware of the requirement of Aadhaar under the scheme.
 In all cases, where Aadhaar authentication fails due to poor biometrics of the beneficiary or due to any other reason, the following remedial mechanisms shall be adopted.
 In case of poor fingerprint quality, IRIS scan or face authentication facility shall be adopted for authentication, thereby the ministry through the implementing agency shall make provisions for IRIS scanners or face authentication along with fingerprint authentication for delivery of benefits in seamless manner.
 In case of biometric authentication through fingerprints or IRIS or face authentication is not successful, wherever feasible and admissible authentication by Aadhaar One Time Password (OTP) or Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) with limited time validity, as the case may be, shall be offered.
 In all other cases where biometric or OTP or TOTP authentication is not possible, benefit may be given on the basis of physical Aadhaar letter whose authenticity can be verified through the QR code printed on the Aadhaar letter and the necessary arrangement of QR code reader shall be provided at the convenient locations by the ministry through the implementing agency.
