Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is expected to release admit cards for the <a href="https://iimcat.ac.in/per/g01/pub/756/ASM/WebPortal/1/index.html?756@@1@@1">Common Admission Test</a> (CAT) 2019 today at 5 pm, according to the institute’s official notification. Candidates can download the admit cards from the official website at iimcat.nic.in. The exam will be conducted by IIM Kozhikode this year on 24 November 2019 across locations. The result is expected to be declared by the second week of January 2020. The three-hour exam will include three sections — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. Each section will be allowed 60 minutes of time. However, students can not switch to a different section without completing the previous one. The exam paper will also include descriptive questions and the students will be allowed to use basic calculator available on the screen. As many as 2,44,169 candidates registered for the examination. Last year, the CAT exam was held on 25 November. The IIMs witnessed an 8% rise in female applicants as well.

Government’s Common Admission Test to rope in 15 central universities from next year

This IIM alumni wants to coach students of war-hit Kargil crack CAT exam

Vadodara-based <keyword id="4403629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prachi-Sukhwani">Prachi Sukhwani</keyword> (21) is suffering from macular dystrophy, also known as retinal degradation, since class III. Over the years, she lost 80% of her vision because of this rare genetic disorder. However, her condition couldn’t prove to be a barrier in her road to success.

Gujarat girl with 80% vision loss is now an IIM-A student

<keyword id="58192" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Common-Admission-Test">Common Admission Test</keyword> (<keyword id="16855" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cat">CAT</keyword>), the test that Indian students have to pass to get an MBA degree from prestigious colleges, continues to be topped by candidates with engineering backgrounds. 
 
The recent report was submitted by Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, one of India’s top management colleges. 
 Out of the total of 1.8 lakh people who appeared in <keyword id="2970556" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="CAT-2015">CAT 2015</keyword>, 17 students scored 100 percentile and all 17 of them had engineering degrees. 
 
"Many students with an engineering background are bent on pursuing an engineering-MBA combination and prepare accordingly. People from other backgrounds don't always take the CAT equally seriously. Also, a lot of the best students from streams such as physics, chemistry and English don't even opt for CAT," said CAT convenor Tathagata Bandyopadhyay of IIM-A. "Otherwise, motivated students from other streams can fare just as well."

Engineering students still come first when it comes to cracking CAT

For the latest exam held on 25 November, the number of women candidates was 50% higher than that recorded in 2013 with as many as 84,350 registrations. That figure marked nearly 8% rise in the <a href="https://m.timesofindia.com/home/education/news/50-jump-in-girls-taking-iim-entrance-in-5-years/amp_articleshow/66818559.cms">women candidate registrations</a> from the previous year. With 12,000 more candidates this year compared to last year, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) entrance registered 6,300 female candidates compared to 78,009 from last year. One reason behind the rise in women candidates is IIMs’ attempt to admit more women and increase diversity in classrooms by giving leverage to <keyword id="1312086" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-aspirants">female aspirants</keyword>, Times of India reported citing Sumanta Basu, CAT convenor from IIM Calcutta. Earlier, it was <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/entry-of-female-students-to-iims-sees-a-drop-in-2018/story/280940.html">reported</a> that the IIMs have been aiming at getting 30% women into the postgraduate programmes. The efforts seem to have paid off. The Union Minister of State for Culture &amp; Tourism (IC) Prahlad Singh Patel launched an <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1588630">E-Portal of Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT</a>) — ‘Digital Bharat Digital Sanskriti'. The CCRT, along with Routes 2 Roots — an NGO promoting art, culture and heritage — is looking to launch a platform for dropout students. The idea is to help them chase careers in areas like music, painting, theatre and martial arts. “There is a need to identify institutions specializing in providing training in various art forms and encourage the children to join these institutions. In the coming three years, we can send children studying in X – XII standard for well planned tours of North-East,” the government press release said. The e-portal aims to explore unknown aspects of India's lesser-known places and their rural and semi-urban culture. In a bid to promote cross-cultural communication in India, the initiative also aims to encourage students to learn regional languages like Punjabis can learn Gujarati and vice-versa. Patel released a film ‘Rahas’ — Raaslila of Chhattisgarh. The CCRT also started to publish books from a series called ’Untold Tales of India's cities’. To make up for the lack, the Indian government is reportedly launching a fresh academic course — <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/want-to-graduate-in-insolvency-heres-how-you-can/articleshow/67534863.cms">Graduate Insolvency Program</a> — which will help train a new crop of insolvency professionals. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) will likely launch the program in first week of February. It will allow fresh candidates to take up Insolvency profession while presently hirings happen from the lot having at least 10-15 years of experience. The 27- month program aims to train nearly 45 such professionals annually. India introduced a new bankruptcy law, the <keyword id="6354456" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insolvency-and-Bankruptcy-Code">Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code</keyword> (<keyword id="192838" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBC">IBC</keyword>), two years ago — which was seen as a landmark law to help several banks resolve a huge pile of bad debt from under-performing or stressed companies. The new rules gave recourse to both the company’s promoters and creditors. How will the course benefit insolvency professionals? As of 2017, the country had nearly <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/jobs-how-will-graduates-gain-from-insolvency/articleshow/59850758.cms">600-700 insolvency professionals</a>, according to Mamta Binani, former president of Institute of Company Secretaries of India. While according to a senior official from ICAI, certified training programs have the capacity to create thousands of job opportunities. That is because, India’s National Company Law Tribunals have been flooded with hundreds of such cases that will need insolvency professionals for primary operations. Who will be eligible? The graduate insolvency program will be outsourced from prominent Indian institutions, and operate in sync with regulators. It will admit candidates from varied backgrounds from chartered accountants, post graduates in economics, finance, management, commerce, cost accountants, company secretaries and law graduates. However, there will be a minimum bar to qualify the elimination exam, just as for the Common Admission Test (CAT). Foreign nationals will also be eligible to take up the course — along with a reservation quota of five seats. The Indian government hopes the course will be added help for professionals already working on bankruptcy to solve the cases more efficiently. It will also give the professionals domestic and international exposure in the field through internships. The overall cost for the graduate program is yet to be declared. However, it is <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/alert-for-cas-law-students-check-out-new-graduation-course-on-bad-loans/story/310221.html">expected to cost </a>between ₹700,000 to ₹1,000,000. India has tried to groom insolvency professionals earlier as well. Last year, the Ministry of Skill Development &amp; Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) jointly announced a training program for <a href="http://www.uniindia.com/news/business-economy/msde-launches-insolvency-associate-course-in-du/1285995.html">‘Insolvency Associates’</a> to create more jobs in the sector. Rolled out under the Pradhan Mantri Kushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), the 250-hour course focused on insolvency issues including Companies Act, accounting and valuation. Looks like 'CAT is out of the bag' for MBA aspirants. CAT (Common Admission Test) is one of the toughest exams every MBA applicant in India eyes to crack in order to make way into the country's best B-Schools. Also, as it is offered all around the world – there are no geographical constraints. Third and the most important factor is CAT is not a standardized test whereas GMAT is. This means that your CAT scores can fluctuate a lot while your GMAT scores are pretty stable over a longer period of time. This allows B-Schools to compare students who have taken the GMAT across years – whereas doing the same for CAT is not possible. Though it is still early to say how much GMAT would impact CAT test-taking population, the signs are there. According to Crackverbal founder Arun Jagannathan, “You may apply with your CAT score or your GMAT score. TA Pai Manipal (TAPMI) is one such institute that offers admissions through both the GMAT and the CAT. Another way to look at it would be to take both the CAT and the GMAT so you can keep your options open. The tests have some similarities so preparing for one could help you in the other.” Most B-Schools in India are catching up with this trend and are trying to keep both routes open for the MBA aspirants.
