<ul><li><keyword id="9531572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="comet-neowise">Comet Neowise</keyword> will the first comet to burn bright over Earth’s skies after <keyword id="9066921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="comet-atlas">Comet Atlas</keyword> and Swan fizzled out earlier this year. </li><li>It will be visible over India for the next 20 days getting brighter each evening. </li><li>Scientists at the Planetary Science Institute (PSI) are already watching the comet and observe that it has a rare sodium tail than burns the same colour as street lamps. </li></ul>Comet Neowise will be visible in India’s skies for the next 20 days as it approaches the Sun for the first time in 4,500 years. It’s the third comet that astronomers were hoping would grace Earth’s skies, and the first one to live up to its promise. "From July 14, C/2020 F3, a comet discovered on March 27, will be clearly visible in the north-western sky. It will be visible after sunset for around 20 minutes for the next 20 days. People can observe it from naked eyes," Subhendu Pattnaik, deputy director of Pathani Samanta Planetarium in Bhubaneswar told the <a href="https://www.orissapost.com/comet-neowise-to-be-visible-in-odisha-skies-from-july-14/">OrissaPOST</a>. The previous two comets, Atlas and Swan, fizzled out before they could become bright enough to be seen by the naked eye. Atlas crumbed to pieces before reaching Earth and Swan was made up of gas, resulting in a much dimmer view than expected. Comet Neowise, on the other hand, will be burning in a blaze of glory in the skies above India — getting brighter each day — before it disappears for another 6,800 years. They’ve already caught its tail Scientists at the Planetary Science Institute (PSI) are already watching the comet with a hawk-eye. According to them, Neowise has a sodium tail — something that’s only been observed in very bright comets, such as Hale-Bopp and the sungrazer ISON <div type="image" title="fp_Neowise_Carl" msid="76953333" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Left: light reflected off of cometary dust, which generally follows the appearance to the naked eye. Right: light emitted by sodium atoms.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Unlike the <keyword id="9571123" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="comet-tail">comet tail</keyword> that we see down on Earth, Neowise’s sodium tail is narrower, longer and points directly away from the Sun making it very difficult to catch on camera. "Atomic sodium responds to sunlight in a similar way to cometary dust, but its momentum kick comes from a very particular wavelength of yellow light – the same colour seen in sodium vapour street lamps," said Planetary Science Institute Senior Scientist <a href="https://psi.edu/news/neowisesodiumtail">Jeffrey Morgenthaler</a>. Comets are essentially icy dirtballs. Their tails are made up of dust, gas and plasma — ionised gas. As they approach the sun, the heat from the sunlight causes the ice to turn into gas. As the gas escapes, it drags ‘material’ — what we Earthlings refer to as dust — with it. As sunlight reflects off the dust, the momentum causes it to drift away from the Sun. However, some of the bigger pieces don’t just float away. The heavier bits stick around and form the tail of the comet. As the light gets re-emitted in a random direction, we catch the view of the comet’s tail down on Earth. Comet Neowise will burn bright over India for the next 20 days after two earlier comets fizzled out

A portion of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-comet-ison-2013-11">Comet ISON</a> may have survived its perilous trip around the sun on Thursday, <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/comet-ison-may-have-survived/index.html#.Upi5HJE6Jlk" target="_blank">NASA said on Friday</a>. 
The comet was not visible during its closest approach to the sun, so many <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/comet-ison-has-rounded-the-sun-but-its-fate-remains-unknown-2013-11">scientists thought it had broken apart or disintegrated completely</a> and would not be visible to the naked in December.
But images like the one above from the European <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">Space</keyword> Agency and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory suggest that a tiny part of the comet may have made it out alive. A streak of white material can be seen streaming away from the sun, which could be a portion of the comet's tiny nucleus, according to NASA. 
"It now looks like some chunk of ISON's nucleus has indeed made it through the solar corona, and re-emerged," comet scientist Karl Battams <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/29/us/ison-comet/" target="_blank">told CNN</a>. "It's throwing off dust and (probably) gas, but we don't know how long it can sustain that." He added: "Now it has emerged and started to brighten, we need to observe it for a few days to get a feel for its behavior."

Comet ISON May Have Survived!

Comet ISON is expected to make its closest approach to the sun on Thursday, Nov. 28. This also happens to be Thanksgiving day. On its trip around the sun, ISON will come within 730,000 miles of surface, but no one knows if it will come out on the other side in one piece. The comet could evaporate from extreme temperatures or be ripped apart by gravitational stresses. 
Here's what you need to know.
What is a comet? 
<keyword id="51550" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="comets">Comets</keyword> are typically made of ice, dust, and rock. When a comets gets close to the sun, the heat causes the ice to vaporize. The vaporizing gas takes the dust with it and forms a tail that can sometimes be seen from Earth. Comets tend to orbit the outer-edge of the <keyword id="52393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-System">solar system</keyword> in the Oort Cloud or the Kupier belt, which is just beyond the orbit of Neptune. 
When was was Comet ISON discovered?
ISON was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2013-ison-comet-spectacularly-bright-2012-12" target="_blank">discovered by a pair of Russian astronomers</a> on Sept. 21, 2012 while it was still in the Oort Cloud at the outer-edge of the solar system, beyond the orbit of Jupiter. 
What is the significance of ISON?
ISON has never been to the inner-edge of our solar system before. Since it comes from the very edge of the solar system (it's been traveling for about 5.5 million years to reach us) it contains chunks of ice and rock from when our solar system was formed 4.5 billion years ago. This gives us a glimpse of what our solar system was like at its birth.
How big is Comet ISON?
When ISON was first detected, it was so bright that scientists thought it would pretty big once it got closer to Earth. But the comets has been shedding some mass during its journey and is now relatively small, Jim Green, director of NASA's planetary <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> division, <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/comet-ison-if-it-survives-trip-around-the-sun-could-bring-spectacular-sky-show/2013/11/24/f544103a-53b6-11e3-a7f0-b790929232e1_story.html" target="_blank">told the Washington Post</a>. Green estimates that ISON is around 1.2 miles wide now. In July, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ison-comet-of-the-century-blasting-gas-2013-7" target="_blank">it was about triple that size</a>.
What will happen to COMET ISON on Thanksgiving Day?
In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GmTmmxDXbI" target="_blank">video for NASA</a>, Don Yeomans, manager of the <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> agency's Near-Earth Object Program, lays out three possible outcomes for Comet ISON when it rounds the sun on Nov. 28.
In the first and most exciting scenario, ISON could survive the passage of the sun and continue on as an active comet. At its closet approach to sun, the comet's temperature will reach 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, <a href="http://www.isoncampaign.org/mmk/what-might-happen" target="_blank">writes astronomer Matthew Knight on the CIOS blog</a>. The extreme heat will cause much of the dust, rock, and ice on ISON's surface to vaporize, producing a fairly bright tail that would be visible in the early morning sky. Viewers should also be able to see the comet during the first or second week of December. 
In the second instance, the sun could break ISON apart in several large chunks. The break-up could happen at any time - before or after its closest approach to the sun. This could still produce a great show in early December, says Yeomans. 
In the last scenario, ISON could completely fizzle. It would disintegrate into a cloud of dust, torn apart by sun's intense gravity and heat. This is something that could happen at any time and would rule out the possibility of viewing the comet with the naked eye in December. 
How can I view Comet ISON?
Astronomers and a fleet of NASA spacecraft have been watching ISON for the last several months, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stunning-photos-of-comet-ison-are-starting-to-roll-in-2013-11" target="_blank">snapping incredible photos</a> of its evolution. 
Before dawn on Tuesday, Nov. 26, was the last chance to see Comet ISON before it rounds the sun, <a href="http://www.space.com/23724-comet-ison-complete-coverage.html" target="_blank">according to Space.com</a>. 
If the comet isn't demolished, skywatchers should be able to see it with the naked eye or binoculars in the early morning sky during the first or second week of December.
Zolt Levay of Baltimore's Space Telescope Science Institute <a href="http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/space/stories/where-to-catch-the-best-views-of-comet-ison" target="_blank">told LiveScience</a>: "The best locations to view Comet ISON would be any place dark, away from artificial lights, with clear sky, lower humidity and a low eastern horizon, with no trees, buildings or mountains in the way."
Many national parks or beaches on the Atlantic Coast would provide unobstructed views.
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory plans to <a href="http://cometison.gsfc.nasa.gov/" target="_blank">post near realtime images</a> of the comet as it grazes by the sun staring around 12:45 p.m. EST on Thanksgiving day.

COMET ISON: The Most Exciting Thing To Happen On Thanksgiving

How To See The 'Comet Of The Century' Today

"Communication with the spacecraft was lost some time between August 11 and August 14," A'Hearn said in a <a href="http://epoxi.umd.edu/1mission/status.shtml" target="_blank">mission update on Sept. 3</a>. He added: "The last communication was on August 8."
The cause of the problem appears to be a software glitch, according to Nature News blog. The team is now trying to figure out the best way to recover communications, but are concerned that battery-powered spacecraft, which receives its energy from the sunlight, could give out very soon if the probe's panels are not oriented toward the sun to catch energy.
"Once the batteries are gone, Deep Impact can no longer be revived," A'Hearn said.
Deep Impact is the first <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> mission to look inside a comet. In July 2005, an instrument released by the flyby spacecraft collided with a comet. The spacecraft observed and recorded the impact, sending back information about the structure and composition of the crater's interior. The spacecraft continued to study <keyword id="51550" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="comets">comets</keyword> after that as part of an extended mission. 
Most recently, it was being used to observe the <keyword id="1400230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Comet-ISON">comet ISON</keyword>. Unfortunately, due to the computer bug, the team had not acquired the latest images of ISON, A'Hearn said in the most recent status update.

A NASA Probe Is Spinning Out Of Control After Handlers Lose Contact

Comet ISON Has Rounded The Sun But Its Fate Remains Unknown

Even small asteroids, like the one <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-meteor-aftermath-photos-2013-2">that recently exploded over Russia</a>, can cause disaster. It caused thousands of injuries from the shockwave that blew out windows and shook buildings.
These are called "century asteroids" because they hit the Earth on average about once every 100 years. The <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> rocks generally go unnoticed because they explode over the open ocean, but if they hit a populated area it could spell disaster.
And as cities spread out and grow, these asteroids become more of a threat to humans.
"We were blissfully unaware of the fact that we've had near misses and actual collisions with objects about the size of an apartment building," Kaku pointed out. 
So far the asteroids we've encountered have been "city-busters," says Kaku. But in 2036 we will have a "nation-buster." 
Kaku is referring the <a href="http://www.astrobio.net/pressrelease/3836/alert-to-the-approach-of-asteroid-apophis">Asteroid Apophis</a>, an <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> 10 times bigger than the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/live-building-sized-asteroid-nears-earth-2013-2">one that skimmed Earth earlier this month</a>. According to Kaku, the asteroid will graze Earth's atmosphere in 2029. Depending on how much friction is created during that flyby, there is a window of opportunity that it could hit on its next pass in 2036.
What can we do? Experts have some dramatic plans up their sleeves.
Kaku says some plans include landing on a potentially hazardous space rock and placing a rocket on it to push it "slightly out of the way so that on the second pass it misses Earth."
An Armageddon-like tactic (exploding nukes in an asteroid) wouldn't work because blowing up a big, solid asteroid would just make hundreds of little baby asteroids that can spread out the damage making the impact equally, if not more, dangerous
Astronomers are also watching the skies for <keyword id="51550" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="comets">comets</keyword>. <keyword id="1400230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Comet-ISON">Comet ISON</keyword>, dubbed the "<a href="http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2013/18jan_cometison/">comet of the century</a>" by <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NASA">NASA</keyword>, will make its closest approach to the Sun in late November. If the comet survives, "it could emerge glowing as brightly as the Moon, briefly visible near the sun in broad daylight," says NASA.
Comets are different from asteroids for a number of reasons. The biggest difference is that asteroids are mostly made of rock and metals whereas comets are made of rock and ice. Comets come from the outer solar system and have a tail, made by ice vaporizing as the comet nears the sun. Nearly all asteroids orbit in the region of space between Mars and Jupiter.
The Comet ISON was discovered in September 2012 by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok. It poses no threat of crashing into Earth but should make for an amazing sight.

A 'Nation-Busting' Asteroid Could Hit Earth In 2036

But just because time travel can only be observed in <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> fiction, doesn't mean it isn't possible: some people think that time travelers from the future could already be visiting us now.
Scientists from Michigan Technological University searched the Internet for time travelers and published their results in the <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1312.7128" target="_blank">physics pre-publication database arXiv on Dec. 26</a>. They looked specifically for social media posts that seemed to predict the future - mentioning events before they happened.
While they didn't find any, Doctor Who and Back to the Future fans need not worry: the results don't disprove time travel.
This was not the first attempt by scientists to find time travelers. In May 2005, a grad student at MIT advertised for, and subsequently held, a <a href="http://web.mit.edu/adorai/timetraveler/" target="_parent">convention for time travelers</a>. Unfortunately no one from the future showed up.
The scientists who worked on this paper used a slightly more sophisticated method: they searched the Internet for content that "should not have been known at the time it was posted."
They used this method to search twitter, search engines, and the Astronomy Picture of the Day website.
The search terms
The scientists decided what search terms to use based on a few criteria:
<ol>
<li>They needed a search term that acquired a name between the period of January 2006 (because they were planning on using Twitter, and Twitter was established in 2006) and September 2013.</li>
<li>They needed a search term with a unique label that wouldn't turn up lots of closely related results.</li>
<li>They needed a search term that would remain important in the future that time travelers would still be likely to communicate about.</li>
</ol>
Eventually they decided on "Comet ISON" and "Pope Francis." They looked for any posts that existed about Comet ISON before it was discovered in September 2012, and any posts about Pope Francis before he was officially named the pope in March 2013.
They did not find any. The researchers then sent out a request to any existing time travelers to post something proving time travel would become possible in the future and if it would be possible for time travelers to change the past.
Specifically, "time travelers were requested to respond with a communication including either the hashtagged term "#ICanChangeThePast2" or "#ICannotChangeThePast2" on or before 2013 August."
The researchers used Twitter for this request because tweets cannot be backdated, so no one but a legitimate time traveler would be able to pull this off.
Time travelers could technically still be around
The experiment did not yield any time travelers, but the researchers outlined several possible reasons for this:
<ol>
<li>It may be physically impossible for time travelers to leave any lasting remnants of their stay in the past.</li>
<li>It may be physically impossible for us to find such information because it would violate some yet-unknown law of physics.</li>
<li>Time travelers may simply not want to be found, and cover their tracks well.</li>
<li>Time travelers might have not used those specific event tags.</li>
