The market for <keyword id="2132783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Herbal-dyes">herbal dyes</keyword> is estimated to be growing at 30-40% annually although the products are a bit expensive. 
 While a chemical-free colour plunge is the most desirable and eco-friendly way of celebrating Holi, you must walk through the market once to find out what’s in store. Broadly speaking, you will find three types of <keyword id="586078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="chemical-colours">chemical colours</keyword> here – powders, pastes and wets or liquid ones. Most of these are chemical/synthetic dyes, containing substances such as <keyword id="2132786" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oxides">oxides</keyword>, <keyword id="6395221" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="heavy-metals">heavy metals</keyword> (lead, chromium, nickel and cadmium), <keyword id="1322867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="acids">acids</keyword>, <keyword id="2132787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alkalis">alkalis</keyword>, <keyword id="2132789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Powdered-glass">powdered glass</keyword> and <keyword id="2132788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mica-dust">mica dust</keyword> – all supremely harmful for your skin, hair and eyes. 
 The powders mostly have <keyword id="2132790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toxic-colorants">toxic colorants</keyword> and an asbestos/silica base; the pastes have a mix of toxic compounds and inferior quality oils and water colours include strong alkalis. No wonder we get itches, rashes, redness and swelling after a thorough colour soak, a colour-filled balloon attack or a terrific <keyword id="2132798" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pitchkari">pitchkari</keyword> fight. Also, darker shades like red, blue and green have high levels of chemicals, metal oxides and industrial dyes, which are used to provide thick texture. Shiny colours can also contain powdered glass. 
 
10 chemical colours that can harm you 
If you revel in rainbow hues and mostly buy synthetic colours, here’s a harm list for your ready reference. 
 
1. Abeer/Gulal: Popularly believed to be the least harmful of all chemical colours, this one contains a whole lot of mica dust that can cause <keyword id="100486" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skin-irritation">skin irritation</keyword> and other infections. This <keyword id="2132796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Powder-colour">powder colour</keyword> is available in many hues including red, pink, green, yellow and magenta. 
 
2. Red &amp; pink: These colours have mercuric oxide and rhodamine B; both can cause <keyword id="1654686" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="eye-irritation">eye irritation</keyword>, <keyword id="28956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="skin-cancer">skin cancer</keyword> and more. 
 
3. Blue: Has <keyword id="890372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prussian-blue">Prussian blue</keyword> that may cause contract dermatitis. 
 
4. Green: Contains copper carbonate/copper sulphate; this may cause severe eye <keyword id="6450271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="allergy">allergy</keyword> or even temporary blindness. 
 
5. Yellow: Features auramine, which may cause eye and skin allergy, as well as respiratory and <keyword id="2132814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digestive-tract-irritation">digestive tract irritation</keyword>. 
 
6. Orange: Contains chromium Iodide, which is toxic to blood and liver. 
 
7. Violet: Has methyl violet; this can be carcinogenic and may cause severe eye irritation. 
 
8. Purple: Contains chromium iodide; this can also be carcinogenic and may cause <keyword id="6465125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="asthma">asthma</keyword> or allergy. 
 
9. Silver: One of the components is aluminum bromide and it is also known to be carcinogenic. 
 
10. Black: Contains lead oxide, which may cause renal failure and learning disabilities in the long run. 
 
 
 
Go ‘natural’ to stay safe You can either buy herbal dyes or use home-made colours, which are clinically safe and totally <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword> friendly. The herbal variant is now easily available in the market and uses components such as flour, henna or arrowroot powder as base, and vegetable dyes to add colour. But before buying them, make sure they are non-carcinogenic, lead-free and lab-tested for safety. 
 You can also prepare <keyword id="583108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Holi-colours">Holi colours</keyword> at home as you get some excellent colorants from certain flowers and plants. All you need to do is dry and powder them or soak/boil them in water. Add a little scented oil and eco-friendly Holi colours will be ready for use. You can also crush dry red hibiscus flowers and boil it in water. Peels of red <keyword id="92372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pomegranates">pomegranates</keyword> or twigs of madar tree produce a vibrant red when boiled in water. Otherwise, put carrot or tomato juice in plenty of water to take the stickiness out and use it. 
 
2. <keyword id="2132806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Turmeric-yellow">Turmeric Yellow</keyword>: This one is the easiest to make. Mix turmeric or haldi powder with double the amount of besan to prepare a vivid yellow powder. Flowers like marigold and yellow chrysanthemums can also be dried and crushed to obtain different shades of yellow. To produce liquid colours, mix any of these powders in plenty of water and boil it. 
 
3. Profound Pink/Magnificent Magenta: Soak sliced beetroot in lots of water for 12 hours or so before using the liquid. 
 
4. Sunny Orange: Put tesu or palash flowers (flame of the forest) in water and soak overnight. Or boil them in water for a vibrant yellow-orange shade. 
 
5. Emerald Green: Dried and powdered henna leaves will work best. For wet colour, soak the henna leaves overnight or prepare a paste of spinach/coriander/mint, and mix it in water. 
 
6. Turquoise Blue: Jacaranda and blue hibiscus flowers can be dried, powdered and used. 
 
7. Dark Brown: Boil tea leaves or coffee powder. Let it cool before using. 
 
8. Charcoal Black: Boil dried amla in an iron vessel and leave it overnight. Mix with water and use. 
 
3 tips for a ‘safe’ Holi 
1. Say ‘no’ to colours: Especially pastes and liquid colours, as these tend to stain the skin deeper and last longer. Avoid colours altogether if you are suffering from asthma, eye or <keyword id="624291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skin-infections">skin infections</keyword>, or any other chronic disease. 
 
2. Cover yourself well: The more you do that, the less exposed you will be to harmful chemicals. Wear full-sleeve dresses and don a pair of sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes. Apply baby oil, cream or waterproof <keyword id="74032" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sunscreen">sunscreen</keyword> lotion on your skin – so that the stains will get off easily. 
 
3. See your doctor: Don’t neglect post-Holi syndromes like skin or eye irritation. A mild anti-allergic and soothing skin lotion should be able to fix it, but severe allergy, <keyword id="2132809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chemical-burn">chemical burn</keyword> or <keyword id="2132810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retinal-damage">retinal damage</keyword> cannot be ruled out either. <ul><li>“Today's product designs are inspired by yesterday's modern miracles,” says <keyword id="148038" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tupperware" source="Orion">Tupperware</keyword> as it brings back its vintage ‘Wonderlier Bowl line,’ which is featured in Amazon Prime Video’s recently released <keyword id="6888608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Marvelous-Mrs-Maisel" source="Orion">The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel</keyword>’s Season Four.</li><li>Here’s a brief history of how Tupperware used ‘Patio Parties’ as its marketing model in the late-1950s to early-1960s to become a household name in America.</li></ul>I had my Friday night reserved for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Season 4. Amazon Prime Video has been releasing two episodes each week. It dropped episodes 3 and 4 on February 25, which goes on to show how society considers women as ‘failure’ over a single setback in their career. From shock, denial, and dealing with an emotional breakdown to starting all over again, <keyword id="13275485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="miriam-midge-maisel" source="Orion">Miriam Midge Maisel</keyword>, played by <keyword id="1551776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rachel-brosnahan" source="Orion">Rachel Brosnahan</keyword>, goes through various stages of failure in Season 4. I couldn’t help but notice how her journey in this Season is very similar to Tupperware’s Vice President Brownie Wise from the early 1960s. Wise, the woman who built Tupperware’s empire in America through her ingenious marketing model, was at the peak of her career when she was fired from the organisation. So, when I saw Tupperware’s product placement in Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it made perfect sense. Tupperware’s product placement is so seamlessly built into the narrative that people with only a penchant for marketing or advertising professionals would notice it. The Marvelous Partnership After we saw Midge being dropped as the opening act for singer Shy Baldwin, she starts picking up the pieces in episode 3. She looks for a side-hustle and that’s when we briefly see her stepping into a new offstage role as an independent Tupperware Sales Representative. The plastic-maker Tupperware was quite popular in American kitchens in the late 1950s and has partnered with Amazon Prime Video to bring back its vintage Wonderlier Bowl line, which is featured in the series. Only available for a limited time, the five-piece pastel-hued Wonderlier Bowl set can be bought through <a href="https://www.tupperware.com/pages/maisel">Tupperware’s </a>website. As Midge hosts her first Patio Party aka Tupperware Party, she sells “Plastic, the modern miracle” to her close friends. “Ladies, these are some of the finest plastic products on the household market. There’s so much to choose from; there are so many convenient sizes -- so many vivid colors and you’re going to want it all,” she says, as she introduces the ‘Wonderlier’ and hopes that her friends would get excited about the newest product on the block in the 1950s. Midge cleverly doesn’t mention the brand Tupperware in that presentation and you could faintly hear the brand as her friends chatter in the background. She later adds that she will announce the winner of the ‘Silliest Tupperware Hat’ as we see women in the background, who have fashioned Tupperware bowls and glasses into a hat on their heads. <div type="image" title="Mrs maisel tupperware party" msid="89898779" hostid="261"></div> Transporting back to Tupperware’s golden era: How it cracked the market with a brilliant marketing strategy When Earl Tupper launched its range of plastic containers in the 1940’s, he was faced with the biggest challenge. Its target audience simply did not like plastic. This was during World War II, when <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27442625">plastic was only used</a> for everything from insulation wiring to truck parts but not for home use. American kitchens were filled with glass jars and ceramic and had no place on their shelves for anything plastic. Tupperware’s very first range of containers, ‘Wonderlier Bowl’ line gathered a lot of <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/story-brownie-wise-ingenious-marketer-behind-tupperware-party-180968658/">appreciation </a>from the design and media industry, however, the plastic-maker still struggled to find its place in the consumer kitchens and their hearts. The company was about to go under when Brownie Wise in Miami, their leading seller, came up with a ‘marvelous’ solution. To penetrate the market and get American wives excited about plastic containers, Wise suggested ‘Patio Parties.’ As the picture below by the National Museum of American History shows, parties were Tupperware’s ‘answer’ to a very complex market problem. <div type="image" title="Tupperware - 1950" msid="89898739" hostid="261"></div> Wise recruited women to sell some plastic containers for her. They organised Patio Parties, wherein women would demonstrate novel products and discuss how the latest colour in Tupperware’s Wonderlier Bowl line excited them, over a cup of coffee and local gossip. To up the fun, Wise added a few party games. In the picture below, Wise herself throws a balloon in the air. These party games have also made an appearance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's newest season. <div type="image" title="Tupperware Ms Wise" msid="89898650" hostid="261"></div> Pioneer of the Patio Parties, Wise was appointed as Tupperware’s Vice President in 1951 and was responsible for building the home party business. She built the Tupperware empire and helped the brand become a household name. In the 1950s, Tupperware <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/story-brownie-wise-ingenious-marketer-behind-tupperware-party-180968658/">sales </a>soared and hit $25 million in 1954 on the back of Wonder Bowl, Ice-Tup popsicle molds, which were a hit in Patio Parties. Tupperware knew the importance of Community Marketing even before it was a thing. Wise built a network of 20,000 women and none of them were Tupperware’s employees. <div type="image" title="Mrs maisel tupperware 1" msid="89898525" hostid="261"></div> Tupperware parties became one of the fastest-growing marketing programs in the US and women of all ages and colours would host and join these very popular parties. It also empowered women to become independent in the 1950s from the safety of their homes, many of whom came onboard as full-time party organisers later. Unfortunately, the Founder of the Company Tupper fought frequently with Wise over company strategy and management. As she got all media attention and Tupper saw her as a threat, Wise was fired in 1958. Wise took the matters to court and got $30,000 as her compensation, which was her annual salary back then. She joined a cosmetic company later and continued organising Patio Parties for them. Wise was fired from Tupperware at the peak of her career but that didn’t stop her, just like Mrs. Maisel. It is difficult for women to start over after a setback when society just eagerly waits for us to fall and stop. It must have been harder for Wise to be sacked in the late 1950s when women were just expected to be mothers or wives. Just like Midge was told to focus on her family and keep tending to her children when she started pursuing comedy or faced minor setbacks, Wise’s journey would not have been very different than hers. Back then, having a professional dream, pursuing it despite a lot of resistance from society with almost no backing from your family and no resources to fall back on, was quite rebellious. In real life, change-makers like Wise and in the fictional world, characters like Miriam Maisel push women to keep trying harder. In season 4 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Miriam normalises having an emotional breakdown, makes the audience laugh through it as she turns tragedy into comedy and reminds women that it is okay to fall, stop for a while and then get back onto your path, just marvelously!

 Facebook’s More Together Facebook’s ‘More Together’ showcases how people across the country can do more by coming together, harnessing the power of their connections on the platform. The campaign marks many firsts for the company. India is the first country in the Asia Pacific region where such a campaign is being rolled out. It is also the first time Facebook has rolled out a high decibel campaign of this stature in India. It is themed around Holi and personifies the ‘More Together’ campaign, as it shows young people across geographies sharing the festive spirit, using the power of their connections built on the Facebook app.

 Livpure’s #BinaPaaniHoliManani Playing Holi with water isn't so much fun when it causes so much water waste. Livpure aims to put an end to this wasteful aspect of one of the most loved festivals of India. Their new Holi campaign #BinaPaaniHoliManani seeks to create awareness around the rampant use of water balloons, which contributes greatly to water wastage during Holi. The digital film uses kids, who face the major brunt of this problem, to make a statement against using water balloons.

 Fbb’s #BuraNaKhelo fbb is voicing a strong point of view on the occasion of Holi and Women’s Day to stand-up against the bad-touch many women experience during this festival. Voicing out every women’s opinion, fbb and DDB Mudra Group, have created a film featuring Mithila Palker narrating the inner feelings of all women. The campaign urges men and women to join hands with Mithila and create awareness to ensure that women are respected and made to feel safe in all circumstances. fbb is also giving out stickers at its stores to all its customers to help create more awareness about this initiative.

 MP Birla Cement’s #HappyHoli Based on a poem by noted radio presenter Neelesh Mishra that narrates a spouse’s longing for the presence of their significant other, Birla Cement’s film plays allegorical homage to the love and longing that Krishna bore for Radha. The narrative is at once playful and passionate, describing the many festivities that the celebration of Holi entails interspersed with the yearning of a wife to see her returning husband. Filled with several realistic interactions that are typical to Holi, the underlying message comes through subtly but surely: just as the gulaal colours our clothes and faces, it is those who are dear to us that colour our lives. Every individual in our family and circles adds a different hue to our journeys, some dark and some light, but it is these relationships that build us and make us who we are. They instill in us strength, integrity and stability, which are qualities that MP Birla Cement also aspires to possess.

 Fanta’s #NoBahanaHoli ‘Khelo Fanta Wali #NoBahanaHoli” campaign, in a playful manner, reiterates the brand’s core promise of being the best companion for uninhibited playful fun this Holi. The campaign reinforces how Fanta’s bold orangey taste helps teens to unlock their playful selves, enabling them to shed their inhibitions. Teens today seem to face a lot of peer pressure and as a result go through painstaking effort to protect their curated personas, which can get in the way of maximising their enjoyment during festivals like Holi. Fanta reminds teens that its okay to let fun just be fun and that there's nothing wrong in just enjoying the moment to the fullest.  Max Fashion’s #MaxWaliApnoHoli Max Fashion’s campaign spins around how colours of Max bring people together during Holi, irrespective of whether they like playing with colours or not. Capturing the affectionate moments between siblings, the campaign revolves around a family of five rejoicing in the celebrations of Holi. The film focuses on the youngest member of the family who is running away from his sisters with a fear of getting coloured by them. A colourful twist is further added to their playful bond when the sisters gift their brother trendy outfits instead of soaking him in multi-colours. Through this film, Max celebrates the true spirit of Holi by celebrating togetherness and spreading happiness with their stance – #HoliApnoWali. The film has been conceptualized by Lighstream, the branded content studio owned by Rainshine Entertainment.
