Paris, Relegated to obscurity for fifty years, the storied <keyword id="22576237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yves-du-Manoir-stadium" source="keywords">Yves-du Manoir stadium</keyword> — where Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell's 'Chariots of Fire' moment unfolded — has sprung back to life, now abuzz with Olympians in the serene suburb of Colombes, northwest of Paris. It was a camp for German and Austrian internees, who were sent to other internment camps in France form here. <br /><br /> Among those interned here were refugees such as Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin and German novelist. <br /><br /> The stadium underwent multiple renovations and remained a premier sports facility in Paris until the establishment of Parc des Princes (football stadium) in 1972. After that, Yves-du Manoir gradually faded into obscurity. <br /><br /> Parc des Princes reigned as the primary sports center until the emergence of <keyword id="22292736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stade-de-France" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Stade de France" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Stade de France">Stade de France</keyword>, the colossal venue now home to France's national football team and host to international rugby matches. Yet, Yves-du Manoir, named after the rugby legend who died in a plane crash, continued to survive on minimal maintenance. <br /><br /> "I don't know why its existence was lost on the people who run the show but I am glad that it's getting back on its feet. It has such great legacy," said Armand, who is a data analyst and a passionate hockey lover. <br /><br /> "Football is huge in Paris but hockey is there. It is not as popular as it is in India but hockey is making progress in France," he added. <br /><br /> The stadium hosted nearly 250 national and international athletics, rugby, football and boxing competitions, including the World Championship in 1972, in the last century. <br /><br /> Following the <keyword id="21168478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-2024-Games" source="keywords">Paris 2024 Games</keyword>, Yves-du Manoir will become the headquarters for the <keyword id="22576238" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="French-Hockey-Federation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="French Hockey Federation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="French Hockey Federation">French Hockey Federation</keyword>, the Ile-de-France League, the departmental hockey committee, and eventually house a resident club in one of its new buildings. <br /><br /> Two synthetic turfs, one for competition with a 1,000-seat stand and one for training, will be dedicated to the federation's National Training Center. <br /><br /> "The stadium will become the new home of French football club Racing CFF. Top 14 French rugby union clubs, <keyword id="22576239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Racing-92" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Racing 92" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Racing 92">Racing 92</keyword> are scheduled to make the stadium their new home in 2025," informed the venue media manager. <br /><br /> In the last two years, massive work has been done both inside and outside the facility.The stadium has been remodelled for with the turf being laid with recycled waste. <br /><br /> "They have relaid the roads around the stadium. For two years, the construction work continued. It was a bit of an inconvenience to the people living around, but it's okay, it's part of the development," said Jameel, who runs a restaurant in the vicinity. <br /><br /> "I don't go to the stadium, but I am hoping a lot of people will come to my place for some delicious food when matches are held," he added.

Beyond <keyword id="19916613" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris" source="keywords">Paris</keyword>, Indian travellers are also exploring other locations in <keyword id="19899242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="France" source="keywords">France</keyword> such as Nice, Aubervilliers, Colombes, and Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, Airbnb said in a statement, citing data for bookings made by Indian guests between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, for stays in and around the host cities during the period of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. <br /><br /> These areas, including key Olympic venues like Colombes (field hockey) and Chateauroux (shooting events), along with cities hosting <keyword id="64" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="football" source="Orion">football</keyword> matches like Saint-Etienne, Lyon, Nantes, Nice, and <keyword id="65651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bordeaux" source="Orion">Bordeaux</keyword>, are experiencing significant interest, it added. <br /><br /> Airbnb said travellers from over 160 countries and regions have already booked their stays on its platform during the sporting event. Reports: Hostage Taken In Post Office In Paris Suburb

The materials soften when the surrounding room reaches around 71 degrees, absorbing the excess heat, and then harden once the temperature dips back below 71 degrees, releasing the trapped heat with the help of the aluminum and causing a noticeable change in the room's temperature.</p><p class="p1">That means the table is essentially working like a "thermal sponge," as Lagrange and Ménard put it, sucking up excess heat and then releasing it once the room becomes cool enough.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/555b4e8f6bb3f7d75a510044-800-558/zef_table_pcm_en.jpg" border="0" alt="ZEF table"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://zef-design.tumblr.com/download">© Colombe Clier, VIA 2015</a></span></p><p class="caption">The table works like a "thermal sponge" thanks to the phase-changing materials.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">According to the inventors, the table has the potential to reduce heating needs by as much as 60% and cooling demands by as much as 30%, which could save a lot of money as well as energy.</p><p class="p1">It's a feat of engineering that makes the most sense in homes that don't have climate control.</p><p class="p1"><span>In climates where the temperature can drastically swing from hot to cold in short spans of time, the ZEF Climatic Table is most useful. <p>Three separate "intervention" teams have been called to action since the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and subsequent hostage crises claimed 17 lives last week.</p>
<p>France sent RAID, which stands for research, assistance, intervention, and dissuasion, and GIGN, the Intervention Group of the National Gendarmerie, to hunt down Cherif and Said Kouachi, who killed 12 people at Charlie Hebdo's offices. </p>
<p>Earlier today, Paris deployed RAID and BRI ("Research and Intervention Brigade") in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-hostages-taken-in-post-office-in-paris-suburb-2015-1">hostage situation</a> at a post office outside of the capital. Both teams were also used in response to a hostage situation at a kosher market <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-guman-takes-hostage-in-a-kosher-store-in-paris-2015-1">in which 4 people were killed</a>.</p>
<p>RAID is a 200-strong special force founded in 1985 to counter major robberies, organized crime and terrorism.</p>
<p>Though it works in areas closest to Paris, RAID can be sent anywhere in France as directed by the nation's traditional police force. That was the case in 2012, when RAID killed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mohammed-merah-france-history-siege-afghanistan-2012-3">Mohamed Merah</a>, an extremist who killed 7 people during a week-long rampage, after a 32-hour siege in Toulouse in southern France.</p>
<p>RAID was also behind the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/may/15/newsid_2510000/2510707.stm">rescue</a> of 21 kindergarteners and their teacher in a two-day crisis in 1993. Most of the children - held hostage by a man with 16 sticks of dynamite strapped to his body - were rescued in negotiations leading up to the eventual raid. The perpetrator was killed while asleep in a classroom.</p>

<p>GIGN is an older organization founded in the wake of the <a href="http://history1900s.about.com/od/famouscrimesscandals/p/munichmassacre.htm">Munich massacre</a> during the 1972 Summer Olympics. French news outlet Le Figaro <a href="http://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/2015/01/08/01016-20150108ARTFIG00348-charlie-hebdo-gign-et-raid-main-dans-la-main-pour-retrouver-les-terroristes-presumes.php">reports</a> the group has some 400 members based in Versailles, just west of Paris; the organization's <a href="http://www.gendarmerie.interieur.gouv.fr/fre/Sites//Notre-Institution/Nos-composantes2/Groupe-d-intervention-de-la-gendarmerie-nationale-GIGN">site</a> specifies it is capable of fielding 280 armed specialists in extreme situations.</p>
<p>Though similar to RAID, GIGN is more suited to open, rural settings.</p>
<p>The organization<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> did the heavy lifting in the </span><a href="http://www.lemonde.fr/societe/visuel/2015/01/16/infographie-le-double-assaut-des-forces-de-l-ordre-contre-les-terroristes_4557906_3224.html">firefight</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> with the Kouachi brothers, setting up snipers, vehicles, and assault teams around the industrial building where the terrorists made their last stand.</span></p>
<p>The unit is also trained for interventions on airplanes, as in its forcible response to four gunmen who hijacked Air France Flight 8969 in 1994.</p>

<p>Finally, BRI is a special unit belonging to Paris's own police department, intervening only within and around the capital. An <a href="http://le.raid.free.fr/bri.htm">unofficial site</a> on RAID and other special police forces reports that BRI counts 48 full members, and can field up to 72 if necessary.</p>
<p>Since the "R" in BRI stands for research, a ten-year veteran of the unit told <a href="http://www.parismatch.com/Actu/Societe/En-operation-avec-la-BRI-deuxieme-partie-147718">Paris Match</a>, only five percent of their work time is in actual interventions in the field.</p>
<p>They're expertly trained for stakeouts and surveillance. "When you've been hiding away undercover in a car for over a month and nothing moves, it can get pretty boring," the unit veteran said. "The real quality you need to work here is patience."</p>
<p>Though the three units are separate, RAID and GIGN especially work closely together. In the late 2000s, French Minister of the Interior Michèle Alliot-Marie initiated joint exercises. And on January 10th, GIGN's Twitter account thanks all three units for their work during an incredibly trying week.</p>
