Shortly after this, there were reports of tickets being bought and sold in black, for much higher prices. Social media was then rife with discussions about scalpers, and how they are hoarding tickets to sell them at higher prices. Now, BookMyShow has filed an FIR for black marketing of Coldplay's tickets. According to an ANI report, the company has taken legal action against unknown scalpers involved in the reselling of tickets for Coldplay's "<keyword id="23232180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Music-Of-The-Spheres-World-Tour" source="keywords">Music Of The Spheres World Tour</keyword> " in India. The online ticket platform filed an FIR with the <keyword id="19906039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Police" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Mumbai Police" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Mumbai Police">Mumbai Police</keyword> on October 2, accusing scalpers of black market activity surrounding tickets for the band's highly anticipated shows in January 2025 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The FIR was registered at Vile Parle Police Station, with the Mumbai Police charging the accused under sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), as well as section 66(C) of the Information Technology Act. Investigations are currently underway to identify those involved in the unauthorised resale of concert tickets. The issue arose when BookMyShow, which opened ticket sales for the concert on September 22, received emails from two people who claimed to have secured tickets for others in exchange for money. BookMyShow's FIR filed with the Mumbai police also urges authorities to investigate the unauthorised resale of tickets by individuals and platforms. "We have provided details of all resellers that have come to our attention, including independent individuals reselling tickets for this tour across social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and beyond, as also digital platforms such as Viagogo, Stubhub Holdings and more, to aid authorities in a thorough investigation," a statement from the company read. The platform is also reportedly considering cancelling tickets that have been sold through unauthorised channels and reiterated its strong opposition to illegal ticket resale. "Our stance remains clear and unchanged - BookMyShow vehemently condemns and opposes ticket reselling which is deemed illegal and is punishable by law in India. BookMyShow has no association with any such unauthorised ticket selling/reselling platforms and/or any third party individuals/platforms for the purpose of reselling Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 in India," a company spokesperson said as per ANI. BookMyShow had also posted a statement on Instagram last month, saying that scalping of tickets is punishable by law in India and that people should stay safe from scammers. "Scalping is strictly condemned and punishable by law in India. We have filed a complaint with the police authorities and will provide complete support to them in investigation of this matter. We urge you not to fall victim to these scams. Any tickets bought from unauthorised sources will be at risk of consumer and can turn out to be fake tickets. Beware of such scammers," the statement had read. Coldplay is set to perform three shows in Navi Mumbai on January 18, 19, and 20, 2025, as part of their world tour.

But so what? What mattered was that they could finally attend Coldplay's concert. Then, once this customer pays the remaining amount, the physical tickets will be dispatched to their registered address. Mind you, these physical tickets are important. Just e-tickets won't make the cut for both Coldplay and Diljit. You would not be able to enter the venue if you don't have this physical ticket or a wearable band. So, if the tickets are not delivered to your place before the concert, you’d be left stranded, even after paying all that money. Also, dont be surprised with a constant, relentless barrage of messages and calls, if you so much as just inquire about the tickets. State governments are also largely reluctant to establish regulations in these waters, since a resale would entail double entertainment tax, which only adds to their coffers. Says advocate Siddharth Chandrashekhar, Senior Panel Counsel at Bombay High Court, "Although some state police forces, like in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Punjab, have cracked down on illegal sales, arrests are rare, and the absence of cohesive legislation leaves enforcement inconsistent. Black marketing or reselling of live event tickets at escalated prices constitutes an offense under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 for petty crimes, the Consumer Protection Act 2019 for unfair trade practices, and the Competition Act 2002 for abuse of dominant position”, Chandrashekhar highlights. “While Maharashtra’s Entertainment Duty Act, 1923, attempts to curb resale for some events, most states lack clear laws addressing scalping. With no specific national laws, opportunistic sellers can legally resell tickets for exorbitant sums, with no recourse for buyer”, he signs off.

However, some people reported getting the same tickets, albeit at massively inflated prices on sites like <keyword id="23278340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viagogo" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Viagogo" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Viagogo">Viagogo</keyword>. “I had seen Coldplay's tickets on Viagogo even before 12 noon yesterday, well before the ticket window on BookMyShow was to open”, recounts Yumna Ahmad, a Delhi-based communications professional And even as BookMyShow shows that all of Coldplay's shows on 18th, 19th and 21st January, 2025 are sold out, Viagogo continues to offer some tickets for sale. For instance, Viagogo currently has Level 1 Section P tickets at Rs 34,178 each. At BookMyShow, their original price was Rs 4,000, marking a 8x+ increase. Floor tickets for the same concert, originally priced at Rs 6,450 are available at Rs 40,908 each. Tanishka Mehtani, a Delhi-based strategic communications professional and a die-hard Coldplay fan, had the BookMyShow window open on three screens-her laptop, PC and tablet. In fact, she had also coordinated with her friends on a WhatsApp group to best strategize how she could get hold of 5 tickets for her group. She logged in at 11:45 am and yet, she could not move past the 88,000 mark. Later, she came in touch with a seller on Instagram, who had 4 tickets for the floor, which they were selling for Rs 2 lakh each. “The seller must have known the high premium these tickets came with, since he was unrelenting and not willing to negotiate even a bit. Apart from three screens, 10 of my acquaintances were also in the queue to get tickets, but none of them could get one”, recounted Mehtani. Lounge tickets, previously available for Rs 35,000 at BookMyShow, are now being sold at Viagogo for Rs 11,52,857 each. Similarly, prices of Level 2 tickets, which are the costliest amongst the three available levels, have already gone into lakhs on the site. Level 2 Section B tickets were priced at Rs 12,500 originally. But on Viagogo, the same tickets are available for Rs 96,229, marking a clear 8x premium. <h2>Diljit Fiasco</h2>Surprisingly, the site also continues to show tickets for Diljit’s India leg of Dil-luminati tour, even though they seem to be sold out elsewhere. Not only does it show that new tickets have been added to their website recently, the overall charges exclude delivery fee as well, which means you will have to incur extra charges to get your hands on the ticket. However, in a surprising contrast, the website also mentions that the tickets are available for instant download as well. For Dosanjh's concert in JLN Stadium, Delhi on October 26th, 2024, the fan pit tickets were available at Rs 19,999. The same tickets are now available on Viagogo for Rs 91,710. In some places like Delhi, only 2 categories of tickets were available (Gold and Fanpit). Delhi-based management professional Tanvi Sovani, had applied for an HDFC Pixel card in hopes of getting hands on the tickets during the pre-sale event, which was exclusively meant for HDFC card holders. Hours later, she found a distant acquaintance ready to sell 4 tickets for the Silver area, which was originally priced at Rs 1,499. The catch? The tickets were now priced at Rs 11,000. 3 hours later, she found out that those tickets too, had been sold. In an absurd display of pricing on Viagogo, the fanpit in relatively smaller cities like Chandigarh or Indore, Lucknow are priced at Rs 3,36,664 and around Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000 respectively. However, paying such a significant amount to strangers via Instagram or other social media platforms is fraught with risks, which you should avoid. Many people have also tagged Viagogo as a fraudulent site, noting that they had been conned and not given tickets, despite paying such exorbitant prices. Online reviews of the ticket reselling platform have been largely negative, with many people having called out the platform on varous social media platforms for scamming and non-receipt of the ticket at the last minute.
