The PIL comes in the wake of widespread concerns over alleged irregularities during the online sale of tickets for the British band Coldplay’s upcoming concert in Navi Mumbai, scheduled for January 2025.<br /><br />Filed by advocate Amit Vyas, the PIL highlights the growing menace of ticket scalping and black marketing at large-scale events, including concerts, live shows, and sports matches. According to the petition, many potential buyers were locked out of the website within minutes of the ticket sales opening, only to discover that the tickets had been sold out. Shortly thereafter, these same tickets appeared on secondary platforms at exorbitant prices, fueling suspicions of deliberate manipulation.<br /><br />Vyas, in his submission, noted that secondary websites were still selling tickets at inflated rates. It urges the court to consider the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, as the basis for implementing stricter regulatory measures in the ticketing industry.<br /><h2>Ongoing police investigation</h2>Following last month’s irregularities, Vyas lodged a police complaint with the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police, which is currently conducting an inquiry. In March, the Ticketmaster website <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ticketmaster-crash-again-eurovision-tickets-2023-3">crashed and disrupted ticket sales for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023</a>, leaving some irate fans high and dry. Then the platform annoyed the BTS Army in March, when it <a href="https://twitter.com/Ticketmaster/status/1631116578099175428?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">canceled the rest of the sales for BTS rapper Suga's concert tour dates</a>, citing "extremely high demand."</p><p>Coldplay and Ticketmaster Singapore did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Swifties in France are furious after Ticketmaster abruptly halted Eras Tour ticket sales for Taylor Swift's Paris shows.</li><li>After the platform crashed during the presale on Tuesday, Ticketmaster said it would postpone the sale dates.</li></ul><p>Seems like Ticketmaster has bad blood with Taylor Swift and her legion of fans — this time in France.</p><p>The company abruptly suspended ticket sales for the star's Eras Tour in Paris and Lyon shortly after presales started on Tuesday, leaving thousands of fans hanging.</p><p>The 33-year-old singer is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CuUezdKuB8u/?hl=en">slated to play</a> four shows in Paris in March 2024, and another two shows in Lyon in June 2024.</p><p>Tickets for the Paris stops were supposed to go on sale in two batches at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. local time.</p><p>But the Ticketmaster site struggled to keep up with demand right from the start: Even fans who got into the ticket purchase page early weren't able to check out due to a <a href="https://twitter.com/zozomccormack/status/1678669324523896833">technical error on the platform</a>.</p><p>Other fans took to Twitter to complain that the <a href="https://twitter.com/TSTheErasTour/status/1678692235343216640">queue wasn't moving</a>, or that the Ticketmaster platform <a href="https://twitter.com/remiprovendier/status/1678721411509284864">wouldn't allow them to log in when it was their turn to buy the tickets</a>.</p><p>Over an hour after the presales started, Ticketmaster reassured fans on <a href="https://twitter.com/TicketmasterFR/status/1678678681466597376" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a> that they were aware of the problem: "Some of you may be having issues with the site this morning - we are working on it and will let you know."</p><p>But a few hours later, to the shock and dismay of those already in the queue, Ticketmaster abruptly <a href="https://twitter.com/TicketmasterFR/status/1678694127263686657">postponed the ticket sales</a> — with new sale dates to be announced. </p><p>"The Taylor Swift sale | The 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Eras Tour for Paris La Défense Arena has been put on hold. We will keep you posted with a new on-sale time as soon as possible. All codes not already used will remain valid," Ticketmaster tweeted.</p><p>The company followed up with another <a href="https://twitter.com/TicketmasterFR/status/1678809359050997762" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter update</a> a few hours later, saying that the sales were disrupted due to "an issue with a third-party vendor," and that "tickets are still available." Ticketmaster did not give any further details about what the issue was and what the new sale dates were.</p><p>This is not the first time that Ticketmaster has botched ticket sales for a big concert.</p><p>As Insider previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ticketmaster-outage-reports-spike-as-taylor-swift-presale-starts-2022-11">reported</a>, a similar incident took place in November last year when Ticketmaster crashed during the ticket sales for Swift's US leg of the Eras tour. At one point, Downdetector.com outage reports for the site surged to nearly 4,000.</p><p>The Eras Tour ticketing situation got so bad that it even prompted a group of Swifties to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-fans-ftc-complaint-ticketmaster-antitrust-2022-12">file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission</a>. </p><p>The glitches, the errors, and the disruption didn't stop there.</p><p>In December last year, Ticketmaster came under fire for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ticketmaster-under-fire-faces-fine-selling-fake-bad-bunny-tickets-2022-12">selling fake tickets to a Bad Bunny concert in Mexico City</a>.</p><p>In March, the Ticketmaster platform also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ticketmaster-crash-again-eurovision-tickets-2023-3">crashed during the ticket sales for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023</a>.</p><p>In June, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coldplay-fans-singapore-concert-ticketmaster-anger-twitter-2023-6">Coldplay fans in Singapore</a> were furious after they were frozen out of their purchases when the platform crashed yet again during the ticket sales for the band's concerts.</p><p>All in all, it looks like it's going to be a pretty cruel summer for European Swifties hoping to catch their idol on stage.</p><p>Ticketmaster did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Insider outside of regular business hours.</p>

Coldplay wants you to shell out Rs 25,000 to 5 lakh for a ticket to see them perform in India

As predicted, her shows in the UK and the US sold out in minutes.</p><p>The harder problem for artists like Adele is making sure the people who buy the tickets are the true fans who want to see the concert and not the scalpers looking to make a profit off one of the hottest music tours of 2016.</p><p>To do that, Adele turned to a tiny British startup called Songkick. </p><p>The startup, which connects bands to fans, has learned how true fans behave and has built up a list of identifiable scalpers in its system. </p><p>The company actively tracks and maintains a listing of known scalpers who have used the site before. Artists also work with the company to provide their own methods of weeding out re-sellers, said Ian Hogarth, co-founder and co-CEO of Songkick. </p><p>Even with only a pool of 235,000 tickets sold through the site, the company identified more than 53,000 scalpers who were trying to get tickets and blocked them from the sale. The company now claims less than two percent of those sold-out tickets ended up back on the market.</p><p>"By selling the highest number of tickets we were able to through our own channels, and working with Songkick and their technology, we have done everything within our power to get as many tickets as possible in the hands of the fans who have waited for years to see her live," said Adele's manager Jonathan Dickinson in a press release. </p><p>It's a technological challenge to identify a true fan from a scalper, and in the end, the artist and fans both want the same thing: the tickets to be in the hands of the fans who want them most.</p><p>But when Songkick first launched, it didn't even have a ticket component at all.</p><h2>Before Adele, it was not always about tickets</h2><p>For the past eight years, the startup tracked bands, at first by manually uploading their concert schedules, and then alerted fans when their favorite band was playing near them.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Songkick</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The goal was to give fans easy access to the concerts they wanted to know about, hopefully then increasing ticket sales to the concerts themselves.</p><p>The average concert is actually 40 to 50 percent unsold, Hogarth said. Artists who sell out instantly, like Adele and Paul McCartney are really a very small minority.</p><p>The other 99.9 percent of artists are still struggling to sell out at all, Hogarth says. Since artists rely on concert money as the majority of their income, they have to then raise the ticket prices to earn a liveable wage. </p><p>"Because no has solved the problem of getting everyone in the building, the net effect is that the prices just keep going up and up every year. We're trying to get to a world where every show sells out, and the event-goer is paying a reasonable price," Hogarth said.</p><p>Songkick wasn't the one selling the tickets, but Hogarth hoped that by making fans more knowledgeable that some of their favorites were in town, it would fill the concert halls. </p><p>That business grew, eventually leading to partnerships with Spotify and Apple Music, but the startup was still missing the other half of the coin, Hogarth told Business Insider.</p><p>It was only in June, after eight years of building the fan-side of Songkick, that the startup merged with ticketing site CrowdSurge. </p><p>"<span>We're now the largest independent ticketing company in the world," Hogarth said. "We're at pretty meaningful scale. We've grown over 50% in the last year."</span></p><p><span>The gr</span>owth has put some strains on the company. During the Adele ticket sales, some fans <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/adele-fans-songkick-personal-data-breach-2015-12">claimed they could see other people's information</a> on their screen once they went to the check out carts. </p><p>"Songkick was responsible for selling 40% of tickets directly to fans, a portion of whom were unfortunately able to preview other users' shopping carts for brief periods due to extreme load. At no time was anyone able to access another person's password, nor their payment or credit card details (which are not retained by Songkick)," the company said in a statement at the time. </p><h2>Why artists love them</h2><p>One big benefit of merging with CrowdSurge was learning what the artists need. That helped the company make small tweaks. For instance, the company started talking to artists about "selling out shows" rather than "doubling the size of the ticketing industry." That made a difference when they're approaching artists - selling out a show sounds like you're emotionally invested. Doubling profits sounds like you're a manager. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Songkick</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"It tends to be the case that you're really good at understanding at artists, like a company like Bandcamp. Or you really understand consumers, like Pandora," Hogarth said. "I think what we're trying to pull off with our company is really unique because we're trying to be a company that understands artists and fans equally." </p><p>After all, musicians have spent the last decade getting steam-rolled and pummeled by online music, pirating, and streaming services. Some, like Taylor Swift, have openly challenged companies like Apple and forced them to change their ways. </p><p>Adele, an artist who is decidedly "meh" on streaming services like Spotify, has embraced Songkick because it puts her in charge of selling the tickets to fans rather than the venues. Coldplay and other artists recently published a letter deploring the rise of scalpers and <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-34877526">asking for government intervention in stopping it</a>. </p><p>"I want to see a world in which artists dictate more of the agenda of how music works on the internet, and it's a great thing that artists are finally standing up and doing that," Hogarth said. Meet the startup that kept scalpers from buying up all the tickets to Adele's sold-out show

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>When Matt Jones was a teenager, he used to host concerts all around the UK. He managed bands, had a record label, and started an online magazine.</p>
<p>He was also putting on shows for not-yet-big celebrities like Adele, Mumford and Sons, and Ellie Goulding.</p>
<p>But after realizing he was doing about 400 shows a year, Jones decided to pivot. As a concert promoter, he had witnessed the ins and outs of the business and came to understand that the system, in his opinion, was "broken." He decided he would be the one to change that.</p>
<p>"As a promoter you lean on these third-party platforms to get you exposure and marketing, but there isn't really anything there," Jones told Business Insider. "You don't go to Ticketmaster and say, 'Oh what show should I go to tonight?' You're pointed there. You were listening to it on Spotify, or you're reading about it, or your friend told you about it, and then you go to a destination.</p>
<p>"It just felt like that extra step wasn't adding any value," he said. "Why can't you just go to the source where it's just like I want to go to a Coldplay show I'm going to go to coldplay.com."</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>And so in 2008, Jones created <a href="http://www.crowdsurge.com/">CrowdSurge</a>, a company that lets artists take control of their tickets and sell directly to their fans on their site.</p>
<p>The company is currently working with 300 artists, including big names like Arcade Fire, Paul McCartney, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, and Macklemore. And they're selling tickets in 57 different countries. </p>
<p>In 2013, CrowdSurge sold tickets for 5,218 different events. Six months into 2014, they had already sold tickets for 4,762 events. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The company wouldn't share exact numbers, but they said they've sold millions of tickets.</span></p>
<p>In addition to providing the behind-the-scenes technology for ticketing, <span>CrowdSurge</span> also helps artists come up with fun ways to engage their fans - like letting fans vote on where a band should perform and then routing the concert tour based on the results.</p>
<p>But the most important thing CrowdSurge provides for artists is independence from third parties and the ability to control their relationship with fans.</p>
<p>"When I was a concert promoter I used to go to every single show," Jones said. "I have a relationship with these artists. We're the only company in the space that thinks of our client as the artist. Everyone else thinks it's the building or promoter. But you don't go to Madison Square Garden to go to Madison Square Garden, you go because Coldplay is playing."</p>
