This is an 18% surge from last year’s <keyword id="121400" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-placements">campus placements</keyword> last year. “We continue to be a net hirer of engineering, science, management and other graduates as well as experienced professionals. With more and more students in campuses becoming digitally ready, we have announced a 30 percent increase in our hiring of engineering and science students for 2020,” the company spokesperson said. Cognizant to hire 20,000 ‘digitally ready’ freshers — with higher starting salaries of ₹4 lakh per annum

French multinational Capgemini is planning to hire as many as 15,000 students from Indian universities in 2020-21. These graduates will join the company next year at an average salary of ₹3.8 lakh per annum. However, for those hired from top tier IITs and NITs, salaries can go as high as ₹6.5 lakh. They will also account for nearly 10% of the total hires. “The net headcount in India has continued to grow well with strong hiring year-on-year and our perspectives for 2020 look good too. Globally, we also continue to increase our overall headcount by 5.1% year on year,” Capgemini said last year when it laid off over 500 employees. Meanwhile, Cognizant too is back to sprucing up its employee base. It is looking to hire over 20,000 digitally-skilled graduates in 2020. These IT majors are are also actively reskilling their employees. “We have 1,800 certified consultants, while our nearest competitor in India is 500. The focus is on continued skilling. But a few companies are also taking up large-scale projects to impart skills to their employees. To facilitate this, two multinationals with heavy presence in India — Capgemini and Cognizant — are taking steps to re-skill over 60,000 employees. Last month, Cognizant said that is planning to reskill and redeploy its senior level employees as a part of its structural rejig. “The gross reduction is expected to lead to a net reduction of approximately 5,000 to 7,000 roles as the company aims to reskill and redeploy approximately 5,000 of the total associates impacted,” <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/benching-firing-and-re-deploying-the-story-of-20000-employees-at-tech-majors/articleshow/71934414.cms">said </a>Karen McLoughlin, CFO, Cognizant in its latest earnings call. And it is not just engineers that they want to be well-versed in technologies. It is also hiring 500 sales professionals skilled in digital technologies. As of June, the technology major had 288,200 employees — and over half of them are in India. Capgemini too said that it reskilled over 51,000 of its employees in 2019 so far. They are skilled in emerging technologies like cloud, devOps, and big data. The cloud of this silver lining is that neither of these tech majors are reskilling ‘all’ its employees. As companies are restructuring, these upskilling projects run parallel to job losses. New Delhi, Feb 6 () IT major Cognizant on Thursday posted an over 39 per cent decline in net profit at USD 395 million for the December 2019 quarter on account of factors like restructuring charges and said it expects topline in 2020 to grow by 2-4 per cent.The company also announced that its co-founder and vice chairman Francisco D'Souza will leave the board effective March 31, 2020. Besides, former managing director and CEO of Britannia Industries Vinita Bali has been appointed as a new independent director effective February 24, 2020.The US-based company, which has a significant chunk of its workforce in India, had posted a net profit of USD 648 million in the October-December 2018 quarter.Its revenue grew 3.8 per cent to USD 4.3 billion during the quarter under review from USD 4.1 billion in the year-ago period. In constant currency terms, this translated to 4.2 per cent growth. "Our steady progress against key initiatives is increasingly evident in our commercial and financial performance. We enter 2020 with renewed vigour and optimism," Cognizant Chief Executive Officer Brian Humphries said. He added that Cognizant is doubling investment in Cognizant Academy in 2020 to reskill and redeploy talent towards its digital imperatives.The company believes it needs to hire or reskill about 25,000 resources in 2020 and has begun to operationalise on this, he noted.For the full year, its net profit was down per cent to USD 1.8 million, while revenue was higher by 4.1 per cent to USD 16.8 billion in 2019 compared to the previous fiscal.Cognizant said it expects its March quarter revenue growth to be in the range of 2.8-3.8 per cent in constant currency, which includes a negative 60 basis points impact from the exit of certain content services business announced last year.For 2020, revenue growth is estimated to be in the range of 2-4 per cent in constant currency, taking into estimate a negative 110 basis points impact from the exit. "Our operating performance and strong free cash flows in the fourth quarter reflect the actions taken throughout 2019 to improve our cost structure and instill greater operating discipline across the company," Cognizant CFO Karen McLoughlin said. The 2020 outlook reflects the company's commitment to further improve cost structure to fund investments in growth."We are executing a balanced capital deployment strategy that is focused on reaccelerating topline growth through strategic acquisitions and other investments while returning capital to shareholders," she said. In October, Cognizant had announced plans to slash up to 7,000 jobs in the next few months as part of cost-reduction efforts. It had also said it would partially exit from content operations business and the move would impact another 6,000 jobs.During the December 2019 quarter, Cognizant incurred USD 53 million in realignment charges, including USD 4 million in employee separation costs, USD 27 million in employee retention costs and USD 22 million in third-party realignment costs.For the year, it incurred USD 169 million of realignment charges that include USD 64 million of employee separation costs, USD 22 million of costs associated with CEO transition and the departure of the president, USD 45 million of employee retention costs and USD 38 million in third-party realignment costs.Also, during the three months and year ended December 31, 2019, Cognizant incurred USD 48 million in restructuring charges, as part of its 2020 Fit for Growth Plan, that included USD 45 million in employee separation costs, USD 2 million in employee retention costs and USD 1 million in third party costs.The charges included USD 5 million of costs incurred in 2019 related to the company's exit from certain content-related services. On D'Souza's exit from the Board, Cognizant Chairman of the Board Michael Patsalos-Fox said as a key architect of Cognizant, Frank had helped lead the company through a quarter-century of remarkable growth and success. "He leaves a powerful and unforgettable legacy as a global thinker, mentor, builder, and champion of initiatives that improve lives in our communities," he added. D'Souza was elected to Cognizant's Board of Directors in January 2007 and served as Vice Chairman since June 2018. He had co-founded Cognizant in 1994 and served as the company's CEO from January 2007 through March 2019. In addition to his tenure as CEO, he also served as President from 2007 to 2012 and held a variety of senior management positions, including Chief Operating Officer, from 2003 to 2006."Frank has been an extraordinary leader. That means, the salaries offered after reskilling was more than double, compared to the campus offers. “Once the youth of our country is empowered with the necessary skills and knowledge, they are capable of creating hundreds of unicorns like Facebook and Google. The April 2019 batch was the litmus test to understand that. In fact, 33 of them today hold job offers that are paying over ₹25 lakh per annum,” said <keyword id="8665617" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="abhimanyu-saxena">Abhimanyu Saxena</keyword>, Co-founder at Scaler Academy and <keyword id="8665620" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="InterviewBit">InterviewBit</keyword>. 'The Mandalorian' cinematographer said shooting baby Yoda was similar to shooting Christian Bale in 'Vice'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/sunscreen">Sunscreen</a> in the US is regulated by the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/fda">FDA</a>, yet American sunscreens may not be protecting us as much as the ones you can find in other countries. </li><li>Out of 20 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-sunscreen">best-selling US sunscreens</a>, nine of them didn't meet European standards. </li><li>In the video above, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/dermatologist">dermatologist</a> Dr. Seemal Desai explains what to look for in a sunscreen that protects against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/skin-cancer">skin cancer-causing</a> UVA rays. </li></ul>Following is a transcript of the video. Narrator: In 2017, researchers tested 20 best-selling US sunscreens. The good news is that 19 of them met FDA standards. The bad news? Nine of them didn't meet European standards. Turns out, different countries have different rules for what makes a safe sunscreen and US sunscreens may not be protecting Americans as well as it could. When we lay in the sun, our skin absorbs two types of UV light. UVA and UVB rays. UVB light is higher energy and can cause sunburns while UVA penetrates deeper under the skin and can damage skin cells along the bottom layer of your epidermis.Desai: We know that UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburns. But UVA rays are the rays that can actually cause skin cancer so you actually wanna cover the spectrum on both of those. I think a lot of people get into a misconception that I didn't get sunburned so I'm not at prone to getting skin cancer which really isn't true.Narrator: The biggest concern with US sunscreen is how much protection you're getting from cancer-causing UVA rays. For decades, FDA regulations required that sunscreens protect against UVB, but not necessarily against UVA. Meanwhile, rates for melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer, kept climbing in the US. Then, in 2012, the FDA updated its regulations on labeling and testing so that manufacturers must now let customers know if its sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA. That's what the broad spectrum label on your sunscreen means, for example. And while this is a good first step, there's still no regulation on how much protection you're getting from UVA. So, there's no way to tell.Desai: Here in the United States, I think we need to be cognizant of the fact that when a sunscreen says it's broad spectrum, UVA- and UVB-protecting, that does mean you're going to get protection against those rays. However, what it does not mean is that it's going to block out all of the rays.Narrator: And that's where US sunscreens fall short.Desai: And I will say that I do think we are behind other countries globally, particularly some of our European counterparts, in getting new sunscreen ingredients approved. Overall, there has not been much change in US sunscreen composition and what our sunscreens are made up of in the past several years.Narrator: The FDA has approved 16 active ingredients that protect against UV radiation. But only some protect against both UVB and UVA rays. For comparison, Europe requires that all of its more than 20 active ingredients protect against both.Desai: Right now, the American Academy of Dermatology and other organizations are really advocating with the FDA that they need to really speed up the approval process for new sunscreen ingredients. Because it's with these ingredients that we can probably get even better coverage and better protection and maybe even get something that's easier to apply, that's easier on the skin, that doesn't have any harmful side effects for patients.Narrator: You can purchase sunscreens from other countries online. But if you plan on sticking with American sunscreens, look for the broad spectrum label and don't buy anything below SPF 30.Desai: The higher the SPF, definitely the better. But we definitely don't want anyone going below a 30. And think about if you're someone who has a history of a melanoma, if you use an SPF 30, you're blocking out let's say 98% of the harmful rays. However, what about the remaining 2%? That 2% may be something that could be potential of putting you at a risk down the road.

Preparations will also be made to give a frigate to the Sri Lankan navy as a gift."As a good and true friend, over the past decades, China has provided powerful support to the social-economic development and military and <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">defense</keyword> construction of Sri Lanka," Xu <a href="http://colombogazette.com/2018/07/23/china-to-boost-military-ties-with-sri-lanka-and-gift-frigate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>."In the past few years, two militaries have witnessed the deepening communication and cooperation in the areas of personnel training, joint training, maritime security, etc.," he added.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Navy Office of Legislative AffairsA Chinese Type 054A frigate.</div></div></div>Xu, speaking at an event to mark the 91st anniversary of the founding of China's People's Liberation Army, did not offer any details about the frigate, but it's the latest exchange in Beijing and Colombo's tight military relationship."It was China's assistance to the Rajapaksa government during their military offensive against the Tamil Tigers in the late 2000s that opened the door to a major expansion of Chinese investments and influence in the country," said Jeff Smith, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, where he focuses on South Asia.That assistance came after the US <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/how-beijing-won-sri-lankas-civil-war-1980492.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ended direct military</a> aid over Sri Lanka's poor human-rights record, and it arrived in the form of political cover at the UN and of sophisticated military hardware, like six F7 fighter jets.President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in office between 2005 and 2015, nutured ties with China, including a 2013 deal that saw Beijing provide <a href="http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/china-to-train-sri-lankan-army-to-provide-military-technology/1123290/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$2.2 billion</a> in funding and defense technology and military training.Rajapaksa was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/25/world/asia/china-sri-lanka-port.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized for debts</a> his government took on from China, which also reportedly funded his most recent campaign, which he lost to current President Maithripala Sirisena.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">REUTERS/Dinuka LiyanawatteSri Lankan Special Task Force (STF) members perform at a rescue demonstration in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, February 27, 2018.</div></div></div>Upon taking office, Sirisena <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-chinas-xi-offers-fresh-295-million-grant-to-sri-lanka-in-push-for-dominance-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suspended</a> most of the Chinese-backed projects started by his predecessor. But his government remains heavily indebted to Beijing, and he has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-chinas-xi-offers-fresh-295-million-grant-to-sri-lanka-in-push-for-dominance-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allowed</a> some projects to resume and continued making <a href="http://colombogazette.com/2016/12/03/sri-lanka-to-buy-more-military-transport-planes-from-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deals</a> for military equipment.That China would now offer up a frigate as a gift isn't really surprising, Smith said."Gifting a frigate to Sri Lanka can be seen as yet another attempt to curry favor with the government and military," he said, pointing to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-chinas-xi-offers-fresh-295-million-grant-to-sri-lanka-in-push-for-dominance-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the $295 million</a> Beijing recently "gifted" to Sirisena "to use on a project of his choosing, even as [China] continues to enjoy close ties to the opposition, which is eyeing a political comeback.""It's fairly standard practice in the region," Smith said. "India frequently gifts used military hardware to neighboring countries."India has given Mi-25 attack helicopters <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/mi-25-attack-helicopter-gifted-by-india-to-afghanistan-reaches-kabul-3-more-to-follow/articleshow/50275035.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to Afghanistan</a> and patrol boats to its smaller neighbors. This sping, New Delhi reportedly caught its <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/defence/india-will-gift-obsolete-military-equipment-to-friendly-countries/1143098/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">military by surprise</a> with a request for a list of obsolete equipment that could be refurbished cheaply and given to "friendly" countries.China's presence in Sri Lanka has become more of a concern for India. Sri Lanka allowed a Chinese submarine to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/sri-lanka-china-submarine/chinese-submarine-docks-in-sri-lanka-despite-indian-concerns-idINKBN0IM0LU20141102" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dock in Colombo</a> in 2014 despite New Delhi's concern. In May 2017, during a visit by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lanka said it had <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/diplomacy/article/2094093/sri-lanka-refuses-port-call-chinese-submarine-after-indian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rejected</a> another request for Chinese sub to visit.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Christopher Woody/Google Maps</div></div></div>Straining to repay debts incurred by Rajapaksa's government, Sri Lanka decided in late 2017 to grant China control of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/indias-concern-with-beijing-expansion-grows-with-sri-lanka-port-deal-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strategically valuable port of Hambantota</a> for 99 years. That concession stoked concern in New Delhi that China would expand its military presence there.The current Sri Lankan government has said it won't allow a larger Chinese military presence there, as it is "cognizant of the furor it sparked in Delhi when Chinese submarines first surfaced in Colombo in 2014," Smith said."It's possible that calculation could change if the more China-friendly Rajapaksas return to power in elections next year," he added, "but even they will be cautious about the backlash it could trigger in India and beyond."In June, Sri Lanka announced that <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2153246/sri-lanka-base-navys-southern-command-chinese-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it would move</a> its southern naval command to Hambantota, though Colombo again stressed that it would not allow Beijing to use the port for military purposes.<h2>'A tectonic shift'</h2>India's security focus has undergone "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-to-buy-submarines-amid-china-naval-activity-in-the-indian-ocean-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a tectonic shift</a>" toward its southern approaches in recent years, but its northern frontier, much of which is shared with China, remains a point of contention.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">AP Photo/Manish SwarupIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, left, with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit in Goa, India, October 16, 2016.</div></div></div>The two countries were locked in months-long standoff in summer 2017 over a small chunk of territory in the eastern Himalayas, where China <a href="https://thewire.in/diplomacy/china-bhutan-belt-and-road-initiative-doklam" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> India of violating the sovereignty of Bhutan. Amid that showdown, Chinese and Indian troops also came to blows in the western Himalayas, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-of-chinese-indian-troops-fighting-with-stones-at-himalaya-border-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pelting each other with stones and rifle butts</a>.Heads have cooled since that standoff, and both sides have pulled troops from the border.
