The company is reportedly planning on launching a smartphone in India soon.<br /><br />According to a <a href="https://twitter.com/stufflistings/status/1617833490963402754">tweet</a> by popular tipster Mukul Sharma, Coca Cola is set to launch its smartphone in India this quarter. These can come in the form of blogs, annual reports, brand journalism, research papers, webinars, podcasts, newsletter, Youtube channel, lookbooks etc. The ‘company’ can either be a brand or an agency. <br /><br /><strong>Where is it globally?</strong> And where are we in India? Globally it has already caught on and a lot of brands have tasked their PR agencies and corporate communication teams with leading owned media. Infact, PR agencies like Wordwrite PR have invested in a platform like Pittsburg 100 that create engaging content for brands. Brands like IKEA, General Motors, Coca Cola have pioneered this on a global platform with different owned media that is enviable. <br /><br />Closer home, the hospitality and fashion industry has taken the lead on owned media. Yes, it competes on engaging storytelling front. However, it does not compete in the kind of stories that a brand wants to tell as these stories are usually more customer centric and bridge the gaps between paid and earned media conversations. It helps them create locally relevant original content with a more controlled narrative. Smart PR teams leverage owned media as an opportunity to make varied subtle digital pitches. <br /><br /><strong>What about authentic storytelling?</strong> Between and owned media, storytelling does not lose its charm. Stories must be authentic and connect with the audience on owned media as well. The volume does not matter. The quality matters. Content must be genuine and relevant on any platforms (digital or traditional). <br /><br /><strong>Are we confusing the consumer? </strong>No. If you do not try and disguise it as third-party credibility or editorial media then it is fine. Mention and be clear that this is owned media upfront. Authenticity is key. The moment you try and pretend it is not owned media you will lose the trust of your customers. As PR professionals you need to advise your clients/brands to stay the course. <br /><br /><strong>What are the skillsets you need to get started?</strong> Be good at communication and see the big picture. Have a nose for news, be curious, be teachable, have good writing skills and a keen eye on the fast-changing mediums of communication with the core target audience. Don’t get hung up on the tools and platforms. Focus on the stories that matter to your audience. Create trust and credibility with authentic stories and empathy. If you can do that then that is the only skillset you need. <br /><br /><strong>Why should PR professionals handle it? </strong>PR professionals are basically trained to create engaging and captivating stories that are authentic. Adept at having a two-way conversation, persuasive (read media pitching) and keeping the audience engaged, are key PR qualities that make a strong case for PR to handle owned media. <br /><br /><strong>When do you start?</strong> Today. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>FilmOn, a free TV streaming service <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/shamahyder/2014/10/29/10-companies-changing-the-tv-industry/">highlighted this week by Forbes as one of the 10 companies changing the TV industry</a>, is suing online ad verification service DoubleVerify for blacklisting the site as "copyright infringing" and "adult content."</p>
<p>FilmOn alleges that these classifications could result in the site losing out on millions of dollars of ad revenue from wary advertisers. </p>
<p>FilmOn provides hundreds of live TV channels and on-demand programming to the web, both for free and with some content behind a subscription. It says its current service is within the realm of the <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> and that it should not be treated as a copyright infringer. The company is also meeting with US regulators the FTC next week to see if it can become recognized as a cable system, which would enable it to pay retransmission fees to broadcasters and stream hundreds more channels for free.</p>
<p>FilmOn CEO, Greek billionaire and media entrepreneur Alki David, told Business Insider it has been so difficult to redress the issue with DoubleVerify, his company was left with no option but to sue in order to raise awareness of the issue to the wider industry and hopefully remove the tarnish from its name in the eyes of potential advertisers.</p>
<p>"To tell you the truth, the reason we brought the suit is to shed light that they are d-----bags, that they are people who throw legitimate companies under the bus in order to generate a body count," David said.</p>
<p>David could not confirm how much in damages FilmOn is seeking from DoubleVerify, but <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/244765759/Filmon-com-v-Double-Verify-pdf">the suit, filed in the Superior Court in Los Angeles earlier this week</a>, suggests DoubleVerify's actions have caused "millions of dollars in damages by improperly disrupting FilmOn's efforts to market content it owns."</p>
<p>FilmOn's argument is that DoubleVerify is "willfully misclassifying" FilmOn (and potentially other websites) because it is in DoubleVerify's business interests to do. DoubleVerify makes the majority of its money by running analyses of websites for brands and agencies to ensure those websites don't house any fraudulent non-human traffic (otherwise known as bots), that they are safe for brands to advertise against (no porn, pirated, or other nefarious material), and that ads are in a prominent enough position that people will see them.</p>
<p>A DoubleVerify spokeswoman sent Business Insider this statement:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"DoubleVerify delivers impartial, industry-accredited information for the world's largest brands to provide transparency and accountability in online <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>. Transparency threatens those companies whose business models are predicated on practices that some advertisers may naturally want to avoid. We firmly believe that the FilmOn lawsuit is without merit and we will vigorously defend ourselves against frivolous attempts to stifle an advertiser's ability to make fully-informed marketing decisions."</p>
<p>The suit also alleges DoubleVerify is producing malware, bad software that can be designed to scrape people's computers for data and for other malicious purposes. FilmOn says it has reported this to the FBI in the US and Scotland Yard in the UK.</p>
<p>In response to the malware allegation, DoubleVerify says:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Further, it is irresponsible to suggest that a third party verification service such as ours is directly supporting the same kind of malicious activity that we are focused on eliminating. All of the DoubleVerify verification practices and processes are continuously accredited for their accuracy and integrity by the MRC (Media Rights Council). Since our company started more than 6 years ago this is the first suit like this we have ever received. In the past year, several of the largest movie studios and TV broadcasters have sued FilmOn for the illegal distribution of their copyrighted materials online.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2014/10/29/web-video-distributor-filmon-sues-doubleverify-while-charging-firm-with-distributing-malware/">Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported this week</a> that AOL video exchange Adap.tv is one of the more prominent advertising clients that recently stopped working with FilmOn. The report suggests Adapt.tv's checks found that FilmOn was disseminating "bot" traffic - a practice bad publishers use to inflate their traffic in the hope of hiking up their ad rates.</p>
<p>David dismisses these claims as "absolute rubbish" and says that while FilmOn works with a number of affiliate partners, it would never sell on illegitimate traffic to advertisers - and that the company still has a partnership with Adap.tv. FilmOn also works with a research partner, MDot, which flags up potential bots, and issues can be resolved "within minutes," FilmOn commercial director Jill Brook told Business Insider.</p>
<p>Alongside FilmOn, David - heir to the Coca Cola Hellenic shipping and bottling company -also owns home shopping website 9021go.com, the BattleCam.com p2p streaming site and modeling agency Independent Models.</p>

<p><strong>Chinese manufacturing is contracting</strong>. HSBC's China manufacturing PMI climbed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/april-hsbc-china-pmi-2014-5">48.3 in April</a> from 48.0 in March. However, any reading below 50 signals contraction in the industry. "These indicate that the manufacturing sector, and the broader economy as a whole, continues to lose momentum," said HSBC's Hongbin Qu. "Over the past few days, Beijing has introduced more reform measures which could support growth by inducing more private sector investment. We think bolder actions will be required to ensure the economy regains its momentum."</p>
<p><strong>Warren Buffett isn't interested in war</strong>. Berkshire Hathaway held its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-buffett-defends-coke-bnsf-at-berkshire-annual-meeting-2014-03">annual shareholder meeting</a> this weekend. Buffett reminded shareholders that there was "no guarantee" Berkshire would outperform the S&amp;P 500 in every cycle. Regarding his role in Coca-Cola's controversial equity plan, he said it wouldn't have been productive to "go to war" with the board. "I think the best result for the Coca-Cola Company was achieved by our abstention, and we will see what happens in terms of compensation between now and the next meeting of Coke," he said.</p>
<p><strong>Apple wins $120 million from Samsung</strong>. Apple won a patent lawsuit against Samsung. However, Samsung will only be paying Apple $120 million, which is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-beats-samsung-in-latest-patent-trial-2014-5">far less than the $2.2 billion</a> the company was hoping for. "<span>Today's ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: that Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products," said Apple in a statement.</span></p>
<p><strong>Euro zone inflation is staying low</strong>. The European Commission <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-05-05/eu-reduces-euro-growth-forecast-as-inflation-seen-slower.html">reduced its 2015 GDP growth forecast</a> for the euro zone to 1.7% from February's prediction of 1.8%. It also forecasted that the inflation rate would be 0.8% this year and just 1.2% next year.</p>
<p><strong>JP Morgan's 'challenging environment.'</strong> On Friday afternoon, JP Morgan Chase filed its latest 10-Q, and in it the bank <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-sees-q2-market-revenue-down-20-2014-5">warned its Q2 markets revenue</a> wasn't looking great. "Based on Markets revenue results to date, which reflect a continued challenging environment and lower client activity levels, expect 2Q14 Markets revenue to be down approximately 20%+/- versus 2Q13," said the company. "The Markets revenue actual results will depend heavily on performance throughout the remainder of the quarter, which can be volatile."</p>
<p><strong>Another GM recall</strong>. GM is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-gm-recalls-nearly-52000-suvs-for-inaccurate-fuel-gauge-2014-03">recalling 51,640 SUVs</a>. The recall include 2014 models of the Buick Enclave, the Chevy traverse, and the GMC Acadia. "An inaccurate fuel gauge may result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.</p>
<p><strong>Economist Gary Becker has died</strong>. Becker won the Nobel prize in economics in 1992. "The 82-year old Becker was a pioneer in using the tools of economics to analyze things that are frequently thought to be outside the realm of economics," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gary-becker-on-utopia-2014-5">noted BI's Joe Weisenthal</a>. "This idea of using economics to analyze non-market things seems normal these days (the book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Freakonomics-Economist-Explores-Hidden-Everything/dp/0060731338">Freakonomics</a>" was all about this, and was a huge blockbuster). But when Gary Becker started doing this it was novel. And he truly taught people to see the world in new ways."</p>
<p><strong>India makes the cover of Barron's</strong>. As 800 million Indians head to the polls in history's largest-ever election, <a href="http://online.barrons.com/news/articles/SB50001424053111903843804579533663172522346">Barron's Jonathan Laing</a> offers a bullish picture assuming Gujarat's Narendra Modi wins. "Modi's governance style flies in the face of Indian tradition, which has featured backroom business deals in exchange for kickbacks to circumvent the prospect of endless bureaucratic delays," wrote Laing. "Bidding on government contracts in Gujarat is done on the Internet, not over tea. Modi also has embraced privatization of key sectors like ports, water, and power, which is unusual in most of India's 28 state governments and in Delhi, where a dreamy Congress Party's predilection for socialism still holds sway despite the ideology's many failures in India since independence in 1947."</p>
<p><strong>Pfizer earnings beat</strong>. Pfizer said its Q1 revenue fell 9% year-over-year to $11.35 billion. <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pfizer-reports-first-quarter-2014-110000000.html">Adjusted earnings came in at $0.57</a>, which was a bit higher than the $0.55 expected by analysts.</p>
<p><strong>An update on American services</strong>. Later this morning, we'll get <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/monday-scouting-report-may-2-2014-2014-5">two U.S. services industry reports</a>. First, we get Markit's services PMI report at 9:45 a.m ET; economists estimate the headline fell to 54.5 in April from 55.3 in March. At 10:00 a.m. ET comes the ISM non-manufacturing index; economists estimate ISM's index increased to 54.0 in April from 53.1 in March. "Early readings on the service sector for April, including the Richmond Fed survey and the flash reading of the Markit services PMI, pulled back slightly for April, but remained in positive territory," noted Wells Fargo's John Silvia.</p>
<p><strong>Markets around the world are in the red</strong>. Asian market closed lower. European markets are in the red. And U.S. futures are predicting a down day.</p>

<p><strong>BUSINESS INSIDER: You appear to have been the first to review Piketty in English. How did that come about? Was there much competition to capture that byline?</strong></p>
<p><strong>BRANKO MILANOVIC:</strong> I knew that his book was about to be published and when I was in Brussels last September, I remembered that, went to a bookstore and bought Piketty's book just a couple of days after it came out in Paris. It was very prominently displayed in the bookstore. Piketty was already then very well known economist, many of the ideas discussed in the book were in some ways presented by him earlier, and there was quite a lot of anticipation "in the air." I read the book very quickly, probably in less than 3 weeks. It was an extremely impressive piece of work; it went beyond the already high expectation that I had. There was no doubt in my mind that it is one key books of the last several decades. So I wrote the review very quickly. The first draft was ready I think by mid-October. There was not much competition because I read the book so early, in French, and the timeliness of my review "competed" with French reviews of his book, not with American.</p>
<p>However, having said all of that I must confess that I did not expect that the reception of the book and his ideas would be so overwhelming. I do not think Piketty himself expected it.  I don't think that anyone could have imagined that within a month of its publication in the United States the book would be No. 1 of all books on Amazon.  </p>
<p><strong>BI: We've since been inundated with Piketty reviews. Whose have you been most impressed by?</strong></p>
<p><strong>BM:</strong> There were many excellent reviews. The ones I remember in particular were reviews by Robert Solow in <em>The New Republic</em> <a href="http://www.newrepublic.com/article/117429/capital-twenty-first-century-thomas-piketty-reviewed">http://www.newrepublic.com/article/117429/capital-twenty-first-century-thomas-piketty-reviewed</a>,</p>

<p><strong>BI: What seem to you to be the most important critiques of Piketty's thesis?</strong></p>
<p><strong>BM:</strong> Leaving aside the critiques of Piketty's proposal for global taxation of capital (which are easy to make), the most serious critiques, in my opinion, are two: whether the rate of return on capital will remain higher than the growth rate of the economy despite a very large increase in the capital/income and capital/labor ratios, and Piketty's lack of attention to the rise of China, India and other emerging market economies that can, in my opinion, keep the global rate of growth at a rather high level for a century or so.</p>
<p><strong>BI: Are there any misconceptions bout his findings that have started floating up that need to be nipped?</strong></p>
<p><strong>BM:</strong> I believe that some of the left-wing critiques that question the definition of capital used by Piketty are misplaced. To me his definition that includes housing together with the "productive capital" makes lots of sense. Piketty clearly says that he treats all forms of assets that yield an explicit or implicit income (owner-occupied housing yields an implicit income) as capital. That's both sensible and simple. So I do not see the point in the critiques.</p>
<p>Similarly, the right-wing critique that Piketty's ideas are driven by some kind of distaste for capitalism, or envy towards the rich, are, to be a bit harsh, pure nonsense. It is also meaningless to defend high incomes by invoking supposed high productivity of extremely well-paid executives or financiers, or to argue that their spending is needed to maintain aggregate demand. Surely, if maintaining high aggregate demand were a key objective, redistribution in favor of those who are poorer would be good for it because the poor spend a higher percentage of their income than the rich.</p>
<p><strong>BI:For the true Piketty devotee, what's the next work of his - translated or not - that they should seek out?</strong></p>
<p><strong>BM:</strong> I don't know what would be his next book. But it seems to me that his work will first, extend in a policy area toward implementation of some form of international cooperation regarding taxation of capital, second, expand the already formidable database on top incomes that Piketty and his coauthors have created, and thirdly, do research on new topics like fiscal evasion. True worldwide inequality  may be much greater than what we currently believe if we were able to account for hidden wealth.</p>

10 Things You Need To Know Before The Opening Bell

<p>When it comes to crafting effective <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> campaigns, broad emotional appeal will win out every time, according to Orlando Wood, managing director of BrainJuicer Labs, which does research and development for clients in marketing and advertising.</p>
<p>"Fame and emotional advertising is the best predictor of effective marketing and sales just about every time," Wood said while serving on a panel titled, "New Measurement Techniques -- Eye Tracking and Emotional Response," at a recent <a href="http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/wcai/"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Wharton Customer Analytics Initiative</span></a> and <a href="http://wfoa.wharton.upenn.edu/"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Wharton Future of Advertising Program</span></a> conference on innovative approaches to measuring advertising effectiveness.</p>
<p>Wood and co-discussant Herb Sorensen, whose book, <em>Inside the Mind of the Shopper,</em> was a seminal work in the field of measuring shopping attitudes and behaviors, commented on recent research focusing on whether customers can be influenced by marketing and advertising, and whether such stimuli really spur significant sales gains.</p>
<p>Anne Rivers of BrandAsset Consulting and Baylor University professor Kirk Wakefield studied a three-day NASCAR race in Florida to see if official and secondary sponsorships at a large event would influence buying decisions. Their paper is titled, "The Effect of Activating Sponsorships in a Stadium on Key Brand Affinity Metrics and Sponsorship ROI."</p>
<p>"Clearly an important pillar of marketing is ... differentiation," said Rivers. "A Ferrari is different, but most of us cannot afford it. But differentiation may be the first thing to go. AOL, for instance, was a big brand once, but [when] its differentiation ... started to go, that was a real indication of problems in the future.</p>
<p>"So one of the ways to build that differentiation is sponsorship of big events and constituencies like NASCAR," Rivers added, noting that sponsored events offer advertisers long durations and a diversity of opportunities to sway attendees on their products. The question then becomes how the advertiser can make its approach effective and whether the campaign can be definitively tied to sales.</p>
<p>Daniel McDuff, a PhD candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, took on a more pointed survey, trying to measure consumer reaction to advertisements by looking at people's facial expressions during the ads using the cameras on their personal communications devices. For his paper, "Affective Advertising: Automatic Measurement of Advertising Effectiveness from Emotional Responses Collected Using the Cloud," McDuff and several partners at M.I.T. asked respondents to record their faces while looking at ads. The researchers then evaluated the level of smiles, frowns and other facial reactions consumers made and compared them with verbal and written responses in which the subjects recalled their emotional reactions to the ads after the fact.</p>
<p>"The status quo is that we can use interviews and emails [to research people's reactions to advertising]. But [those methods] are limited, because they involve post-watching evaluations, which may not be as accurate as what is happening during the viewing of the ad," McDuff said. "People might feel under pressure to report experiences that they really did not have. If we can find a way to evaluate the responses that people have while watching ads, it could be a more effective way to do things."</p>
<p><strong>The Power of Prolonged Exposure</strong></p>
<p>While the research by McDuff's group was not a one-for-one evaluation of the facial responses to the ads and the sales effectiveness of the promotions -- because the researchers could only incorporate general sales figures for the items being marketed -- McDuff noted that the preliminary study did have some encouraging results.</p>
<p>For instance, he said, there was a negative correlation when respondents had few smiles as well as more downcast facial responses to an advertisement. In other words, the less effective ads had the most negative and fewest positive responses. The other three permutations, however, had about equal effectiveness. According to McDuff, such results indicate that it is good to produce smiles, but not as bad as the researchers had originally thought to present an ad that elicits some frowns, or even a non-reaction.</p>
<p>Still, Wood stated, the point should be to infuse some sort of emotion, hopefully positive, into every ad pitch. "Surely advertising cuts through the system to the brain," said Wood, noting that studying facial expressions in reaction to various promotions may well have a future as a marketing technique. "It has got to make you feel something for the brand. That has been a controversial finding, but it is what these preliminary papers show."</p>
<p>Wakefield said the NASCAR study was, in part, meant to show how people who are passionate about an event may differ in their reaction to sponsorship ads from those who were less interested in the event (in this case, NASCAR). The major sponsors of the Florida event covered in the study included Ford, the U.S. Army, Coca-Cola and Sprint. All of the companies displayed banners throughout the venue and set up booths and giveaway promotions around the track. In addition, five additional sponsors had a smaller presence at the event. The researchers also asked study participants about Apple and Rolex -- two firms that were not represented at the event -- as a test to see if people were faking their answers.</p>
<p>NASCAR fans spent up to 17 hours at the event over three days, Wakefield noted. Many drove to the venue in recreational vehicles, which they parked in a nearby parking lot, meaning they were exposed to some of the marketing displays even during their down time.</p>
<p>According to the researchers, the attendees with the greatest passion for NASCAR were more likely to be affected by the advertising that sponsors displayed at the event. While Wakefield and Rivers did not further conclude that NASCAR fans felt passion for those advertisers as well, the authors say their preliminary research shows that either prolonged exposure to those advertisers' marketing at the event, or the chance, say, to obtain a free Coke or some other giveaway from Ford, made the fans at least more brand-aware of the NASCAR sponsors.</p>
<p><strong>Falling in 'Brand Love'</strong></p>
<p>But Wood stressed that even if, for example, Ford's marketing push was meant to emphasize that its cars have better engines than other brands, an emotional response is still needed to trigger awareness and sales. "[It] is one thing to be engaged with an event and another to appeal to the emotions," said Wood. One requires thinking and evaluating, he added, while the other is an immediate reaction which, while using some information acquired over time, is often more convincing.</p>
<p>"If I ask you what two plus two is, I suspect everyone will quickly come up with four," Wood noted. "But if I say, 'What is 17 times 24?' I suspect everyone would eventually get it. But the first [response] is emotional, based on experience, while the second is rule-based....</p>
<p>"If we have to always be guided by that kind of decision making, we would never get out of the house in the morning," he added. "That is why we say advertising is most effective with an emotional base. I don't know that long, involved exposure to complicated marketing is the most effective way to advertise."</p>
<p>Sorensen agreed, but for a different reason. He pointed out that a person's eyes change focus about 100,000 times a day. At that NASCAR track, Sorensen said, a fan could have thousands of views of a piece of advertising, which might not be any more effective than just one -- or even one memory.</p>
<p>Rivers acknowledged that what she called "brand love" is important, but felt the incidental exposures, whether at the NASCAR track or elsewhere, were more than fleeting. Citibank, she noted, has strengthened its positive exposure in New York since getting the naming rights at the New York Mets home field. Another brand that has touched the "brand love" standard, she noted, is sporting goods firm Under Armour.</p>
<p>"They first started with pro sports, but then went to the Little League realm," Rivers stated. Under Armour, she added, has gone out of its way to capture the fascination of customers, and then used advertising in ways to continue that connection.</p>
<p>"Whether it is pensions or pet food, decisions are made emotionally," said Wood. "If you can give people reasons afterward [for why] they made the right decision, so much the better. If you can give them post-rationalization, then you may have won them for good."</p>
