Sourav Ganguly to be Coca-Cola India's brand ambassador for three more years

<keyword id="6466285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="James-Quincey">James Quincey</keyword>, who is expected to be the next CEO at Coca-Cola, will be coming to India next week. This would be one of his first international market visits after he was announced the president and COO of the beverage giant. He has included India as one of the first few strategic growth markets. 
 
Quincey, 50, is the top contender expected to succeed Muhtar Kent, Coca-Cola's CEO and chairman since 2008. 
 
"Kent had first visited India in 2012 four years after taking over as chief executive. But Quincey's visit is an indication of the US beverage firm's rising dependence on low-soda consumption but high-potential markets like India," a top official from Coca-Cola India told ET. 
 
While mature markets like the US and Europe are seeing continuously rising soda sales, Coca-Cola is relying heavily on emerging markets like India to further urge its sales. 
 
This has happened even as India reported low single digit volumes and fall in sales over the past two quarters in line with the overall consumer goods trend of slowing sales. Coca-Cola India had recorded 4% volume growth in the July-September quarter, as it slowly recovered after slipping in the April-June quarter, which is considered to be a vital one. The reasons for slow sales, even in the summer months, were unseasonal rains and overall slowing consumption. 
 
However, India still remains the sixth largest market for the beverage firm and an area of key growth. 
 
Quincey is expected to spend one day in India, and would engage with the India team of the company along with bottlers; he could also possibly visit markets.

CocaCola’s new to-be CEO will be visiting India
next week

Coca-Cola, the beverages maker from Atlanta Georgia, has retired 65 of its employees via voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) at its Indian bottling unit <keyword id="1037184" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hindustan-Coca-Cola-Beverages">Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages</keyword> (<keyword id="417867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="HCCB">HCCB</keyword>). The company is also thinking of options to sell its bottling business since operations at five such plants were suspended last months, citing declining demand. 
 
These five factories employed 390 people, half of which are still on the payrolls. While one-third of these employees have relocated to other locations, the remaining ones have opted for VRS, an official told ET. 
 
Even though the company didn’t confirm the fact, this is possibly the largest number of employees that the company’s Indian branch has let go of at a time. 
 
As per the company’s website, HCCB, which employs 9,500 people, handles 65% of the company's total bottling operations in India. 
 
"We retain the licence to produce at these plants. Should there be a change in demand projections in the future, we may utilise the latent capacity at these plants," the spokesperson added.

Coca-Cola ‘voluntarily retires’ 65 employees from HCCB bottling plants

Beverage major Coca-Cola is going to have its highest-ever spending on brands in the second half of 2023 in India, when the ICC Men's <keyword id="3859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket-world-cup" source="Orion">Cricket World Cup</keyword> is coinciding with the festive season, which is expected to boost the consumption, a top company official said on Friday. Though the company has not shared the quantum of spending but said it is a "big part of overall <keyword id="6355120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="Orion">investment</keyword>" that they are going to make during the ICC World Cup, which provides "a very big platform" for their business expansion, Coca-Cola India and South-West Asia Vice President, Marketing Arnab Roy, said. Coca-Cola, which had a "challenging summer" this year due to unseasonal rains, expects people will spend money across categories during the festive season despite challenging macro conditions, and affordable packages would do well. When asked if Coca-Cola can make up for a slower second quarter, Roy said: "Probably based on the trends we are seeing both in Q3 and the beginning of Q4, we feel very positive and encouraged, with the way we hopefully end this year." <keyword id="49792" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festival-season" source="Orion">Festival season</keyword> has already begun in some parts of the country, where Coca-Cola has started off brand activation. Coca-Cola is also doing the same in neighbouring markets such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka during the ICC Cricket World Cup, he said. "This is going to result in one of the largest investments we have ever done in Q3 and Q4 combined, in the history of our company in India," Roy said at a virtual media round table. The investment would be from Coca-Cola and its bottling arm Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, he added. When asked about the investments, Roy said: "<keyword id="389052" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ad-spends" source="Orion">Ad spends</keyword> in the December quarter as a percentage of overall spending are 5-7 per cent higher compared to a year ago." Coca-Cola India's Advertising promotional expenses were at Rs 737.97 crore in FY22, according to the financial data accessed by the business intelligence platform Tofler. Coca-Cola, which is the exclusive non-alcoholic beverage partner of the ICC until 2023, has activated its brand Thums Up along with Limca Sportz, the hydration drink from Coca-Cola India's home-grown brand Limca, as the event is in India, he added. It is also adding Sprite, a lime-flavoured beverage, the second brand in India to breach the USD 1 billion mark in annual sales. "The ICC World Cup is in India, which is the largest sporting event in the country after almost 11-12 years. So it is very big for us... to activate our brands, our entire system and obviously ensure that we are able to leverage this big platform to continue the business momentum," Roy said. According to Roy, this is not only for "classic brand marketing investments but also the investments on shopper marketing, trade marketing, working with our customers, working with retailers or distributors. So the whole ecosystem it was important for us to activate" taking over all DME (Direct Marketing Expense) higher. It is a combined effort between two brands as "Thums Up is leading all the work in ICC World Cup and brand Coca-Cola... around the festivals" with a regional approach. Coca-Cola faced a "challenging summer" this year due to early rains but Roy said, "long-term metrics are looking very strong, therefore it was very important for us to continue investing in the business ...in our brands, so that we do not lose the momentum." Regarding the benefits, Roy said typically in the second half of a year, you do not have business expansion. But "with the ICC World Cup, especially as you go to small town and rural India, whether you can start increasing your numeric distribution from what you have had in the past, in this particular period." On the demands, Coca-Cola sees it to be "very robust" across both urban and rural. The company is optimising its demand through affordable packs, giving a quantitative push. Coca-Cola is expanding its returnable glass bottle business across parts of India, which is important to hold and ensure the market at Rs 10 and 20 price points. "We would have to optimise everything in our supply chain and work on pack mix so that your overall profitability is not going down. So Rs 10 and Rs 20 ...will continue to be important in the year 2024," he said. Besides, Coca-Cola is also a lead sponsor of Disney Star which has exclusive broadcast and media rights for linear and digital platforms of ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. It has signed for both linear and digital streaming for OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar.

	Conceptualised by McCann Erickson, the campaign finds Deepika and Farhan interacting in everyday situations. Based in a rural environment, the company hopes that the campaign will resonate with the masses and place Coca-Cola firmly as the fastest growing soft drink brand.

As they overtake the bus while enjoying the ride, the Coke song plays. He drops Deepika at the college gate and tells her that whatever he does, he won't make her stay in the kitchen all the time. The TVC ends with the voiceover declaring: "Khushi chhoti ho ya badi, har khushi mein Coca-Cola" (Be it a small or big happiness, for every happiness there is a Coca-Cola).

 Coca Cola is now in talks with <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword> as it wants someone young to represent its soft drink. 
 The beverages major broke the four year association with Salman Khan, saying Salman Khan was committed to an existing relationship with a daily TV show, which this year was to be sponsored by a brand that competes with the <keyword id="6385848" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coca-Cola-India">Coca-Cola India</keyword> product portfolio. 
 
"In light of this, both parties have mutually decided not to renew the current contract," the joint statement by Salman Khan and the company said. 
 
A source said that the company is in talks with young star Ranveer Singh to replace Salman. 
 
The company's decision to not to renew the contract with the 50-year-old actor is more to do with the image of Coca Cola, which is seen as a young brand, the source said. 
 
"That explains why Coca Cola is talking to a much younger star like Ranveer Singh," the source added. 
 
Khan has been among the top celebrity endorsers reportedly charging Rs 5 crore per year per brand. Recently, he had courted controversy when he supported Pakistani artists saying "they were not terrorists" in the wake of a debate on whether they should be allowed to work in Indian movies after the Uri attack. 
 
Coca-Cola India had roped in Khan as its brand ambassador for the second time to endorse its Thums Up brand in October 2012 replacing another Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. He had earlier endorsed the brand in early 2000s. 
 
At that time, Coca-Cola India had also signed an agreement with Being Human, The Salman Khan Foundation, to jointly promote, conceive and execute charitable and social activities

Coca-Cola has announced a senior management reshuffle in Indian operations with Vice President Human Resources, Sameer Wadhawan given the responsibility to lead the newly created function of Franchise Capability and Business Transformation, as per a news agency. 
 
Manu Narang Wadhwa, who has joined Coca-Cola from American Express where she served for nine years, will succeed Wadhawan, the company said in a statement. 
 
In his new role, Wadhawan will work closely with Coca-Cola's 15 franchise bottling partners in India and South West Asia region to build people capability, and help transform business to become future-ready, it added. 
 
Wadhawan will take over the new responsibility starting January, 2017 and continue to report to Coca-Cola India and South West Asia President Venkatesh Kini. 
 
Commenting on the development, Kini said: "Over the last six years, Sameer has shaped the talent development and capability building agenda within the company. Sameer takes on this critical role of developing capabilities for the franchise bottling operations across the region." 
 
The company said Wadhwa has over two decades of experience in driving transformational people strategies for growth, focusing on talent management, leadership development and transformation agendas. 
Prior to American Express, she worked at GE in various roles.
