The Coal Ministry is more concerned about increasing <keyword id="6383145" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-production">coal production</keyword> than restructuring <keyword id="45383" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Coal-India">Coal India</keyword>, Union Coal Minister <keyword id="6355222" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Piyush-Goyal">Piyush Goyal</keyword> said. 
 
According to Goyal, the more pressing problem before the ministry is finding ways to increase coal production and sorting out environmental issues. 
 
“There were years of inaction, ineptitude and policy paralysis that the sector witnessed on account of environmental constraints, which were unreasonable to a large extent,” the minister said when asked about the restructuring of Coal India. 
 
Speaking about enhancing coal production, Goyal said, “I am glad that I have discussed the issue with the environment minister and already set up a meeting in the next four days to discuss some of the valuable suggestions given in the meeting.” 
 
He, however, did not answer a question on coal pricing and said that there would be an improvement in the quality of coal.

Chennai, Public sector major <keyword id="59700" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-india-ltd" source="Orion">Coal India Ltd</keyword> (CIL) has chalked out Rs 24,750 crore investment for eco-friendly transportation of coal on 61 first mile connectivity (FMC) projects. The three phased investment project when completed will have a combined capacity of 763.5 million ton per annum (MTPA), the company said. FMC projects involve transportation of coal in mechanized piped conveyors from production point to coal handling plants/silos with rapid loading system where coal is loaded directly into <keyword id="1060490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rail-wagons" source="Orion">rail wagons</keyword>. According to the company, 35 FMC projects under the first phase having 414.5 MTPA capacity account for Rs. 10,750 crores. Eight projects of 112 MTPA capacity are already operational. CIL is gearing up to commission 17 more projects of 178 MTPA by FY 2024 end. The rest 10 comprising 124.5 MTPA capacity are expected to be operative by FY 2025, the company said. The second and third phase projects account for nine and 17 respectively. While their respective evacuation capacities are 57 MTPA and 292 MTPA, the investments sequentially, would be about Rs 2,500 crore and Rs11,500 crore. Under the second phase five projects of 21.5 MTPA capacity under construction are expected to be commissioned by FY 2025. Remaining projects are in different stages of progress with tenders issued and bid documents under preparation. For the third phase, tenders have been floated for three projects of 65 MTPA capacity. Nine projects are to be executed through mine developers and operators. The third phase projects are anticipated to be commissioned by FY 2029. Total eco-friendly coal evacuation would go up to 914.5 MTPA when all the 61 projects become operational by FY 2029, including the earlier capacity of 151 MTPA. FMC projects offer benefits like suppression of dust pollution and carbon emissions and reduce the load on road transportation leading to safety. Other benefits include precise quantity and quality coal is loaded for consumers with minimal manual intervention.

New Delhi, India's total <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> rose 8.40 per cent to 222.93 million tonne (MT) in April-June 2023-24, an official statement said on Monday. The country's overall coal output was 205.65 MT in the year-ago quarter, the Ministry of Coal said. Captive mines /others registered a growth of 4.74 per cent to 30.48 MT in Q1 FY24, from 29.10 MT in Q1 FY23. The cumulative coal dispatch grew 6.97 per cent to 239.69 MT in Q1 this fiscal compared to 224.08 MT in Q1 of FY23. The total coal stock, as of June 30, 2023, surged 37.62 per cent to 107.15 MT (provisional) from 77.86 MT a year ago. "This growth indicates the continued efforts to meet the rising demand for coal," the ministry said. State-owned <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-India" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) has recorded 9.85 per cent growth, with production reaching 175.35 MT in Q1 FY24 compared to 159.63 MT a year ago. India will not face any coal shortage this year, even during the monsoon, Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi said last month.

New Delhi [India], June 21 (ANI): In a bid to increase the <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword> in India, the Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy will launch the 10th round of the <keyword id="22130340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commercial-coal-block-auction" source="keywords">commercial coal block auction</keyword> on Friday. According to a statement by the <keyword id="20786311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Ministry-of-Coal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Union Ministry of Coal" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Union Ministry of Coal">Union Ministry of Coal</keyword>, in this round of coal auction, 60 blocks will be offered. The <keyword id="19983406" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India-Limited" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India Limited" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Coal India Limited">Coal India Limited</keyword> (CIL) had previously awarded 23 <keyword id="20434014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-mines" source="keywords">coal mines</keyword> to private sector bidders under a revenue-sharing model, aiming to exploit the latent coal reserves in some of its closed and discontinued underground mines. The <keyword id="20434014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-mines" source="keywords">coal mines</keyword> in the 10th round of allocation are located in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal. Sixteen mines will be offered in Odisha, followed by Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh where 15 coal mines will be auctioned. According to the <keyword id="19923650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-coal" source="keywords">Ministry of Coal</keyword>, so far it has allocated/ auctioned 161 coal mines with peak rated capacity of 575 MT. Out of which 58 mines have received mine opening permission and 54 mines are into operation. Last year these mines have produced total of 147 MT of coal, which constitutes 15 per cent of the total <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword> of the country The <keyword id="22130340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commercial-coal-block-auction" source="keywords">Commercial coal block auction</keyword> was launched by the Prime Minister in 2020. Since then, the Ministry has successfully auctioned 107 coal blocks during the last nine rounds. So far, 11 commercial coal blocks have been operationalized in the country. On the 23 coal mines given to the private bidders <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-india" source="keywords">Coal India</keyword> said "The cumulative peak rated capacity of these mines is 34.14 million tonnes/year (MT/Y) while the total extractable reserves are estimated at 635 MT". <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-india" source="keywords">Coal India</keyword> identified 34 discontinued mines with dormant good-quality coal reserves that were not financially viable for the company to mine. As a result, CIL decided to tender and offer these mines to willing private sector players who could operate them, produce the dry fuel, and share parts of the revenue with CIL. The successful bidder would be the one offering the maximum revenue to the company. "The minimum revenue to be shared is 4 per cent. The contract period is for a maximum of 25 years," the company stated. The company added that this move is advantageous in several ways, including resource conservation, effective substitution of imported coal for the non-regulated sector, and providing livelihoods to local communities where these mines are revived. Environmentally, there would be no land degradation as the mining infrastructure is already in place. CIL is also identifying additional mines to attract wider participation, with relaxed bid norms. For coal sold exclusively for coal gasification or coal liquefaction, 50 per cent of the contracted percentage of revenue share will be provided to the operator. Coal India said that the successful bidder or mine operator will take over the mine on an "as is where is" basis and can use the existing infrastructure and project facilities without additional payment to Coal India. In case of a consortium, foreign bidders are allowed to participate as the second or third members, according to the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. The mine operator will act as the agency responsible for selling coal mined from these mines at market-driven prices through an auction process on behalf of the authority. They will have the freedom to choose their preferred technology and deploy mining machinery to extract coal from the mines. Of the 34 identified mines, West Bengal-based Eastern Coalfields Limited and Jharkhand-based Bharat Coking Coal Limited account for 10 each. Western Coalfields Limited has 5, South Eastern Coalfields Limited has 4, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited has 3, and Central Coalfields Limited has 2.

In a bid to increase domestic coal output, Centre to auction 60 coal blocks today

Coal India is going big on recruitment starting next month and will hire an additional 40,000 workmen at the same time. 
 
"We will recruit management officials from campuses - mostly from IITs and NITs. Requirement for the year is about 1,000 and 3,500 over the next three years," R Mohan Das, the director-personal at Coal India, told ET. 
 
Reportedly, more than 40,000 workmen are retiring and by 2017-18, more 15,000 will retire, which will result in decline in production, etc. 
The total number of employees is around 3.2 lakh of which around 19,000 are officers. 
 
Considering a reasonable rate of inflation, total cost of coal production, as a result, is also expected to fall by at least 10% and per-person productivity per shift is expected to rise to at least 9 tonne from 4.5 tonne now. 
 
At present, the single largest component in the cost of production of coal at Coal India is wages and salaries. It was about 43-44% some time back, but has increased to 50% after the recent increase in wages. 
 
"Following retirement of a large chunk of workmen, CIL will strive for greater mechanisation and increased outsourcing of coal production. This is expected to increase productivity massively," a CIL director told ET.
