A series of deaths of migratory birds in Sambhar Lake have put health and administrative officials under alarm. 520 migratory birds have died and 235 are ill in Rajasthan's Sambhar Lake. Ill birds, predominantly because of <keyword id="23882485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avian-botulism" source="keywords">Avian botulism</keyword> disease are being rescued and treated.<br /><br />Jeetu Kulhari said, "In 2019, a very large number of birds had died in Sambhar Lake. The day we got to know about it, we started working so that the disease does not spread among the birds. We keep a close watch on them every day. 520 birds have died. 235 birds are ill - we have rescued them and all of them are being treated. There is a team at the veterinary hospital as well. The team is also continuously engaged there. During this transportation of injured birds, about one or two of our birds who were in serious condition died during primary treatment."<br /><br />She further said that 10 teams were formed and sent for rescue operations in the lake.<br /><br />"Our teams are working very hard. It is our responsibility to save the birds which migrate here covering thousands of km. We need the support of locals," she added.<br /><br />The bodies of dead birds are being continuously taken out from the lake and disposed of, while the sick birds are being rescued and treated. The death of birds has now reduced, and the condition of sick birds is also improving rapidly.<br /><br />The death of migratory birds due to botulism has been confirmed in the investigation report from Bareilly lab. <br /><br />Botulism is a disease in which birds get paralyzed. Botulism is a serious neuromuscular disease, which is caused by a toxin produced by a bacterium called <keyword id="23883589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clostridium-botulism" source="keywords">Clostridium botulism</keyword>. This disease affects the nervous system of birds, causing paralysis of their wings and legs and the neck starts touching the ground.<br /><br />The bird gets paralyzed and is not in a position to stand, which leads to its death.<br /><br />Subdivision Officer, Navan Jeetu Kulhari said, "The process of finding dead birds in Sambhar Lake has been going on for the last 15 days. More than 1000 birds have fallen ill due to botulism. 50 members divided into 10 teams of SDRF, Animal Husbandry, Forest Department and Administration are engaged in rescue and relief operations in the lake area. Intensive rescue operations are going on in Mohanpura, Khakarki, Jabdi Nagar, Gudha Salt and Sambhar Salt areas of the lake area."<br /><br />Surveys are also being conducted using drones to rescue the birds. <br /><br />Dr. Rajendra Prasad veterinarian said, "Yesterday, 38 birds who had fully recovered were freed and released back into the lake. Currently, the treatment of 50 birds is going on in the rescue center."<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One person is dead and over a dozen have been hospitalized in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/botulism">botulism </a>outbreak in France.</li><li>A couple from California on holiday in Bordeaux are among those who got sick. </li></ul><p>A man from California vacationing in France is on a ventilator after he and his partner developed botulism from eating improperly preserved sardines at a restaurant, in an outbreak that has killed one woman and hospitalized over a dozen others.</p><p>Botulism is caused by a toxin made by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which attacks the nerves and causes difficulty breathing and muscle paralysis, and can lead to death if it isn't diagnosed and treated with an antitoxin quickly.</p><p>The bacteria exist naturally in a lot of places but don't always make people sick. However, in the right conditions, they can produce "one of the most lethal toxins known," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those conditions are more likely in improperly preserved, canned, or fermented foods.</p><p>France's publish health agency said in a statement on Friday that the outbreak was caused by jars of sardines preserved in oil by the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar in the popular foodie tourist destination of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-city-food-france-bordeaux-2017-6"><u>Bordeaux,</u></a> which were served between September 4 and September 10.</p><p>It said 15 suspected botulism cases had been identified, and 10 were hospitalized. The people were from the US, Canada, Ireland, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, and Greece.</p><p>The restaurant's representative Stéphane Guitard told Insider his client is working with officials to find all the customers who ate at the restaurant during this period.</p><h2>Matt Jackson was suddenly unable to talk or drink water</h2><p>Matt Jackson and his partner Kristy Benner, from Hermosa Beach, California, visited the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar on September 4, where they ate a couple of small plates of charcuterie and sardines, the <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/botulism-outbreak-france-bordeaux-wine-cfcd7549339a8f04dcd67968a80e198f"><u>Associated Press</u></a> reported.</p><p>While cycling to vineyards in the village of Saint-Emilion for a wine-tasting trip the next morning, Jackson started to feel unwell, Benner told AP.</p><p>He very quickly became unable to speak intelligibly or drink water because his mouth was so dry, and Benner thought he was having a stroke. Within 24 hours, he was taken to hospital and put on a ventilator. The couple were eventually both diagnosed with botulism.</p><h2>Botulism is a rare but dangerous foodborne illness</h2><p>Botulism is a rare illness, with only 10 to 25 cases recorded a year in France, according to a 2020 review. For this reason, it took doctors days to correctly diagnose the couple, AP reported.</p><p>At first, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/matt-jackson-kristy-benner?utm_campaign=m_pd+share-sheet&amp;utm_content=undefined&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer&amp;utm_term=undefined"><u>GoFundMe</u></a> page set up by the couple's friends, doctors initially thought Jackson might have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guillain-barr-syndrome-rare-disorder-causing-muscle-weakness-2022-1"><u>Guillain-Barré Syndrome</u></a>, which has similar symptoms to botulism. However, Benner also started to experience the same difficulty swallowing as Jackson, and she began to suspect that they both had botulism.</p><p>Other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/symptoms.html"><u>symptoms</u></a> of foodborne botulism can include: fatigue, weakness, blurred vision, droopy eyelids and difficulty moving the eyes, a dry mouth, difficulty speaking and swallowing, vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 36 hours of being exposed to the toxin.</p><p>On September 11, medical lab results confirmed the couple had botulism, the GoFundMe page states. Benner has since been discharged from hospital, but Jackson remains on a ventilator because his response to the botulism has been "extremely severe," according to the GoFundMe page.</p><h2>The restaurant owner threw out some sardines that smelled bad</h2><p>The restaurant's manager, who was not named, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sudouest.fr/economie/alimentation/info-sud-ouest-sept-cas-de-botulisme-a-bordeaux-trois-en-reanimation-16609911.php"><u>told</u></a> Sud-Oest, a regional French outlet, that he had thrown out some jars of the batch of sardines that are suspected to have caused the botulism because they smelled bad. But he decided to serve other jars to customers because they appeared to be in good condition.</p><p>At a news conference on Wednesday, Thierry Touzet, a local official in Bordeaux in charge of consumer safety, said that although the restaurant had never been reported for health violations, it had a "very artisanal" method for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/kitchen/best-canned-fish-seafood"><u>preserving sardines</u></a>, The New York Times reported.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Botulism is caused by some form of <keyword id="11899268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="infection" source="Orion">infection</keyword> from the bacteria <em>Clostridium botulinum</em>.</li><li>Foodborne botulism is usually caused by improperly canned food or honey. </li><li>Wound botulism happens when a wound gets infected with bacteria.</li></ul><p>Botulism is an illness caused by the toxins formed from the bacteria <em>Clostridium botulinum</em>. Although rare, botulism is a potentially deadly condition that causes several debilitating symptoms.</p><p>Insider spoke to Janilyn Hutchings, a certified food safety professional at <a href="https://www.statefoodsafety.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">StateFoodSafety</a>, about the different types of botulism and how to protect yourself from this illness best.</p><h2>Types of botulism</h2><p>There are three common types of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">botulism</a>, categorized by how they are spread. Each type is considered a medical emergency. In the most recent yearly survey, there were <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/surv/2017/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">182 laboratory-confirmed cases</a> of botulism in the United States.</p><ul><li><strong>Foodborne botulism</strong>, which reproduces in environments where oxygen is scarce, such as <a href="https://www.insider.com/is-canned-food-bad" target="_blank" rel="noopener">canned goods</a>. This type contributes to 10% of the latest lab-confirmed cases.</li><li><strong>Wound botulism</strong>, accounting for 10% of these cases, occurs when <em>Clostridium botulinum</em> bacteria enter a cut and produce botulinum toxin, causing a dangerous infection.</li><li><strong>Infant botulism</strong>, which typically affects babies between 8 months and two years of age is the most common form of botulism at 77% of the lab cases. In this type, the bacteria often come from ingested honey or from soil or dust that contains Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which then grows inside the infant's intestinal tract. For this reason, babies less than one-year-old should not be given honey.</li></ul><p>The highest likelihood of developing foodborne botulism is from improperly preserved home-canned foods. If not enough acid, sugar, or salt is used, or if spores are grown in low or no oxygen environments, then there is a higher risk of botulism.</p><h2>Foodborne botulism symptoms</h2><p>The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/symptoms.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">symptoms of foodborne botulism</a> typically begin 18 to 36 hours after consuming contaminated food. You may experience and of the following:</p><ul><li>Blurry vision</li><li>Seeing double</li><li>Nausea</li><li>Vomiting</li><li>Abdominal pain</li><li>Dry mouth</li><li>Difficulty speaking, swallowing, and/or breathing</li><li>Dropping eyelids</li><li>Muscles weakness or paralysis</li></ul><p>Foodborne botulism is rare — only <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/surv/2017/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">19 cases in 2017</a> were due to food sources. Most often, this type of botulism is a result of poor home preservation techniques, although store-bought canned goods can also contain the toxin. </p><p><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/consumer.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to the CDC</a>, in the 18 years spanning from 1996 to 2014, there were 210 cases of foodborne botulism, of which 145 (69%) came from home-canned goods, 30% of which were canned vegetables. Most of these incidences are attributed to human error on the part of the home canners. </p><h2>Botulism food sources and treatment</h2><p>Foods most commonly contaminated include those that are low-acid such as potatoes, asparagus, green beans, beets, corn, canned cheese sauce, chopped garlic in oil, canned tomatoes, and carrot juice. <a href="https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/general/ensuring_safe_canned_foods.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Low acids foods</a> do not contain enough natural acid to prevent bacterial growth.</p><p>"If you're diagnosed with botulism, you can be treated with an <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/testing-treatment.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antitoxin drug</a>. Antitoxin prevents the botulism bacteria from causing any more harm than the body's nerves, but it can't heal any damage that's already been done," says Hutchings.</p><p>Recovery can take several weeks or months of hospitalization, especially if you are placed on a breathing machine due to any damage done to your breathing muscles. Surgery of affected areas and antibiotics may also be required.</p><p>Preventing foodborne botulism starts with proper canning techniques. The USDA has made available a <a href="https://nchfp.uga.edu/publications/publications_usda.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">home canning guide</a> for reference. Some of the most important factors include:</p><ul><li>Washing foods thoroughly</li><li>Removing peels</li><li>Hot packing, which consists of boiling your food and packing it immediately into clean jars</li><li>Adding acids like lemon juice or vinegar to lower acid foods</li><li>Using clean jars and self-sealing lids made for canning</li><li>Using a boiling water process or pressure canner for the recommended time for your food item</li></ul><p>Other tips to reduce your chances of ingesting the botulinum toxin are to use up any garlic or herb-infused oils such as those used to dip bread, within four days and refrigerating any opened bottles of pickled or canned foods. It is also good practice to write the date you have opened any refrigerated or frozen goods on the container itself.</p><p>"The best way to prevent foodborne botulism is to avoid eating foods you suspect may be contaminated with <em>Clostridium botulinum</em>," says Hutchings. Hutchings recommends watching for the following <a href="https://www.foodnetwork.com/healthyeats/2010/07/food-preserving-safety" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warning signs </a>when it comes to your canned goods:</p><ul><li>Dented or bulging cans</li><li>Jars with a loose or swollen lid or a broken seal</li><li>Packaged food with streaks of dried food originating from the seal</li><li>Jars whose contents have rising air bubbles or an unnatural color</li><li>Upon opening a package, unusual smells, foamy liquid, or cotton-like mold (could be white, black, blue or green) on the food or underneath the lid</li></ul><h2>Wound botulism</h2><p><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/prevention.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wound botulism</a> produces the same symptoms as the foodborne variety but may also cause typical signs of infection in the wound such as pain, swelling, redness, leaking pus or fluid, and a fever. The symptoms of infection may or may not be present, but if the other symptoms of botulism are occurring, be sure to seek immediate medical attention. Any wound can get botulism but this type is very rare and not typically spread from person to person.</p><p>Injectable illicit drug users are at a higher risk of developing botulism than others because illegal drugs may be contaminated with<a href="http://www.sdf.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Botulism_Booklet.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <em>Clostridium botulinum</em></a>. However, anyone who's undergone surgery, or had an accident or injury that results in an open wound may get the condition.</p><p>Not injecting illicit drugs will help you <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/wound-botulism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">avoid botulism</a>. If you do inject, don't share needles. As well, not injecting under the skin or into the muscle can help limit risk. </p><p>Wound botulism is also treated with an antitoxin, hospitalization, and potential surgery or antibiotics.</p><h2>Infant botulism</h2><p><a href="http://www.infantbotulism.org/general/faq.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Infant botulism </a>occurs when spores are ingested with foods like honey, or in rare cases, from dust and dirt, and the spores begin to produce the botulinum toxin in the baby's large intestine. Infant botulism is different than foodborne botulism in that the toxin is produced post-ingestion instead of in the food before ingestion.</p><p>"While most healthy children and adults can ingest botulism spores without becoming ill, babies get sick because the spores can get into their digestive tracts and grow," says Hutchings. Babies are most at risk between aged two to eight months. During this age, they are more vulnerable to the germination of spores and the production of the toxin due to an underdeveloped digestive system. Older children with more developed digestive systems can <a href="https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/botulism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">move the spores through their digestive system</a> before the toxin is produced.</p><p>The symptoms of infant botulism can be similar to foodborne botulism with additional warning signs to watch for:</p><ul><li>Difficulties with feeding such as sucking and swallowing</li><li>Constipation</li><li>Unusual or weak crying and irritability</li><li>Lack of facial expression as muscle weakness affects the face including drooping eyelids and drooling</li><li>General weakness, floppiness, inability to hold up the head, and tiredness</li><li>Paralysis</li></ul><p>Honey is a known food product that can carry botulism spores that can produce the toxin in infants. The spores are too large to pass through breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers do not need to avoid honey. It is recommended to never feed honey to an infant under one year of age.</p><p>Treating infant botulism includes the use of an antitoxin called BabyBIG®. This antitoxin helps to reduce the hospital stay of infants with botulism. It is <a href="https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/botulism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">administered intravenously</a> along with fluids that provide nourishment when the baby is unable to feed adequately due to weakened feeding muscles. If breathing is affected, a breathing machine (ventilator) may be used.</p><p>Infant botulism can best be avoided by following the advice for foodborne botulism along with not feeding babies honey before their first birthday, since even a tiny amount of honey can be a risk.</p><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Foodborne botulism is usually caused by improperly canned food. And products sold at grocery stores like Trader Joe's and Walgreens were recalled because they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cyclospora-at-mcdonalds-trader-joes-symptoms-treatment-2018-8">used lettuce from a supplier that sold McDonald's</a> a salad mix contaminated with cyclospora.</span></p><p><span>In many cases, a bout of foodborne illness leads to nausea,&#xa0;diarrhea, cramps, and vomiting. But in more severe cases, food poisoning can be fatal.</span></p><p><span>The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/foodborne-germs.html">CDC tracks the bugs that are most likely</a> to cause food poisoning. The most common agents of illness are noroviruses, <em>Salmonella</em>,&#xa0;<em>Clostridium perfringens</em>,&#xa0;<em>Campylobacter</em>, and Staph. The most dangerous include <em>E. <p>The NZD took a hit on headlines that <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fonterra-apologizes-for-china-milk-powder-contamination-2013-8">banning milk imports from New Zealand</a> after a botulism scare. <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/divisions/dfbmd/diseases/botulism/">Botulism refers to a paralytic illness</a> caused by a nerve toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.</p>
<p>New Zealand dairy producer Fonterra reported over the weekend that a strain of Clostridium, a <a href="http://www.fonterra.com/global/en/hub+sites/news+and+media/media+releases/nzx+statement+final/nzx+statement+final">bacterium that could cause botulism,</a> was found in some of its milk products. </p>
<p>China accounts for 25% of demand for New Zealand's milk. In fact, <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/china/2013-08/04/c_132601034.htm">China's milk powder imports from New Zealand climbed 34.3% year-over-year</a> in the first half of 2013. This accounted for 83.3% of China's total milk powder imports. This shows why a botulism scare is huge not just for China but New Zealand as well.</p>
<p>"If there is any short-term trade impact it will happen at the low of <keyword id="35094" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="export">export</keyword> season and let’s also not forget dairy products can be stored for export at a later data, so any short-term economic impact could well be modest," according to Robert Savage at FX Concepts.</p>
<p>"Fonterra, which accounts for about a third of the global trade in dairy products and collects milk from 10,500 New Zealand farmers, has said it expects dairy demand in China to double by 2020. Clearly, this growth rate will be at risk and something for consideration."</p>
<p>Fonterra's CEO has apologized for the scare and is working with its regulatory authority to ensure that regulators at home and abroad are kept updated on the quality issue surrounding three batches of whey protein concentrate.</p>
<p>The New Zealand dollar which is already considered to by some experts to be overvalued is now at risk of a sell-off if its dairy trade is impacted further. It is also at risk if the Aussie dollar sees a further move below $0.87 after the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate decision tomorrow, writes Savage.</p>
