Tax filing platform <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ClearTax&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ClearTax</a> recently raised $2 million in a pre-series A round from the angel arm of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Silicon Valley</a>-based Founders Fund and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Sequoia+Capital&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Sequoia Capital</a>. 
 
The platform currently helps people with tax and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TDS+filing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TDS filing</a>. It currently has a base of over 10,000 chartered accountants while being used by one million tax payers. The startup has some serious targets in terms of tax filing this year. 
 
Business Insider spoke to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Archit+Gupta&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Archit Gupta</a>, Founder and CEO of <keyword id="2763190" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cleartax">ClearTax</keyword> about his future plans and what got <keyword id="6357940" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paypal">Paypal</keyword> co-founder <keyword id="1485834" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Max-Levchin">Max Levchin</keyword> interested in ClearTax. 
 
How do you plan to invest the money? 
Two or three areas – growing on product front, engineering and marketing. We’re also investing in a new offering – a tax-saving product, ClearSave. Our user-base shows it’s a major pain-point. 
 
What got Paypal co-founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Max+Levchin&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Max Levchin</a> interested in ClearTax? 
We are currently the market leader in India (competition includes Makeyourtax and Taxmantra), a lean team hungry for execution, and a clear tech background. I guess we also connected as founders. 
 
How do you plan to tap into the 20-something market? 
If you look at the millennial audience, that’s 60% of our user-base. They prefer coming online to dealing with a neighborhood agent. 
 
Targets for the current fiscal. 
We have a million users from a tax filing perspective. We plan to help around 3-4 lakh users save taxes by the end of the fiscal. As we build out more platforms, more users will come online. We do have CAs onboard if the user wants a paid service. 
 
Your commission is a slim 0.7-0.9%. How do you plan to make any money? 
Ours is a product-driven approach and not a tele-calling service. We anticipate customers would opt for a subscription on the Cleartax platform. This will then help them with tax saving, tax filing and other services. In the absence of that, the more volume we get, the more efficient we become.

 All you need is enter the required personal details, rent allowance and <keyword id="74488" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PAN-card">PAN card</keyword>. 
 
"It takes about a minute to generate rent receipts. The employee can print the PDF generated, get it signed from the landlord and submit to the HR Department," said Archit Gupta, founder and CEO, Cleartax.in

With online <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tax+return&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">tax return</a> services platforms coming up, individuals and businesses are no longer stuck with the two age-old options - file it on the rather intimidating <keyword id="65338" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Department">Income Tax Department</keyword> website or get an accountant to do it for them. 
 
Income tax returns portal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ClearTax&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ClearTax</a> has announced the latest version of its Form-16 parsing mechanism. Consumers can now upload their Form 16 PDF, and it’s automatically read by the portal’s proprietary software, and the returns show on the screen. This happens with no manual intervention. Company founder-CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Archit+Gupta&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Archit Gupta</a> says this has eased server congestion, while saving costs. 
 
“Tax filing is a last minute activity for most. Last year, our servers had to scale to support the last minute demand. This year, instead of handling the load via web servers, we’ve shifted it to our background servers. These can process load faster. We’ve planned for 10x demand while cutting operations costs by 5x”, he says. 
 
“In Version 3.0, we’ll support enable scanned images. Our engineering team estimates that’s another 6 months away”, Gupta adds. 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ClearTax&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ClearTax</a> has increased its server Form-16 reading capability to 1 lakh forms per minute with the launch. The company will now be looking to serve 3 million tax filers in the current financial year. It also offers a pool of accountants to provide assistance and advice and customer service facilities over phone and email. 
 
When asked about the company’s financial status, Gupta says, “Each of our transactions has a positive contribution to our bottom line. We’re not in a major cash-burn scenario any way. We’ll reach profitability again in the next 24 months. That’s mainly because of our investments in R&amp;D.”

"Our aim is to make selling on our platform as easy and hassle-free for sellers as possible," said Nishant Gupta, Head of Marketplace at Flipkart, adding, "With this ClearTax partnership, we are helping thousands of small sellers in non-metro markets overcome a significant hurdle, so they can so they can concentrate on scaling their businesses." Navigating the tax maze The will help Flipkart's sellers with the basics like registering their companies to pay the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gst-to-be-rolled-out-by-july-1-this-is-how-it-will-be-different-from-uk-canada-other-countries/articleshow/57392589.cms">Goods and Services Tax (GST)</a>, understanding the GST software and filing returns. Each seller will also have his own 'GST Health Check' report to ensure that their businesses are GST compliant. Since then, it has been an upward battle for traders to figure out how the tax is implemented. "Small businesses in the e-commerce space find it challenging to understand and implement GST changes and adapt to them quickly. Instead of letting that be a barrier to their business, we are coming together with Flipkart to help entrepreneurs comply with GST using our technology and advanced automation," shared Aprit Gupta, Founder and CEO of Cleartax. GST was aimed at making the taxation system simpler and more transparent but businesses that operator in multiple locations, like sellers on Amazon that ship all over India, have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/low-india-gst-rates-will-not-help-evasion/articleshow/68281274.cms">finding it difficult</a> to navigate the waters. The frequent changes and 'updates' to the system hasn't helped the confusion either. Wooing sellers This move is only one of the many programmes it has, to woo sellers in an intensely competitive e-commerce market. Earlier this month Flipkart announced an initiative — 'Growth Capital' — tailored for its sellers that would allow traders on its platform to get loans from the market at competitive rates. The company partnered with 10 banks and non-banking financial institutions promising businesses loan approvals within 24 hours, and money in their bank accounts in another 48 hours. Both announcements to support sellers come within days of Flipkart announcing that it is reducing seller's commissions in order to attract new sellers. Today being the deadline to file <keyword id="3081010" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="business-tax-returns">business tax returns</keyword>, companies and freelancers are going through last minute hurdles to file the same. “During the last two days, our traffic increases four times the usual,” said Archit Gupta, founder, ClearTax, a leading <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> Returns e-filing website that connects the consumer with a network of CAs and provides round the year tax planning. 

	With no extension in September 30 filing deadline, here is a list of all the things one should keep in mind for a hassle-free foolproof process.
 

	1. The September 30 tax filing due date applies to a company. And also to a taxpayer or partner in a firm, where the taxpayer’s or the firm’s books of accounts must be audited. In all these cases, an audit report under section 44AB must be prepared by September 30 along with the return.
 

	2. Your return may be ready for submission. At this eleventh hour, do make sure you haven’t missed claiming any business expense in your return. Depreciation of the car you use for business or the insurance cost of the laptop, domain registration expenses, can all be claimed in your tax return. You can claim each expense directly related to your business.
 

	3. Freelancers are not sure if they are eligible to claim deductions.
 

	“They can claim certain expenses under section 80 like any other salary-earning person. Like, if they are putting away money in insurance policies or health insurance, they can claim those expenses,” said Preeti Khurana, Chief Editor, ClearTax.
 

	4. Are you maintaining your books? If you are a business or a small company, it may not be a part of your activity to keep good accounting records. 
 “Even though they are not required at the time of filing the tax returns but you should keep the record in case you need it at a later stage for some clarifications. The <keyword id="3081009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Assistant-Officer-at-the-tax-department">Assistant Officer at the tax department</keyword> may require for verification,” said Preeti. 

	5. It is important that even if you have not made any profits, you file a return; even if your company has made a loss. 
 

	“You are allowed to carry forward your losses if you claim it on time. Hence, prepare your balance sheets accordingly,” she said.
 

	There are some mistakes and misconceptions too.
 

	“Sometimes while you are at work and download videos and music from a playstore, you claim that expense, which you should not. Also, your expenses should not be in cash beyond a certain level,” she said.

They start delivery at 6 am in the morning, and it goes on until midnight. Lokal Lokal is a news app which delivers news and classifieds in vernacular content. The app currently delivers news in Telugu for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Wingman The startup helps sales representatives with on-screen and real-time analysis. The startup’s AI assistant helps the employees, and assists them with cue cards for their presentations, helping them improve performance. DigiPrex DigPrex works as an online pharmacy where patients can share prescription online and get medicines delivered at home, via through Whatsapp. Khabri The podcast platform offers vernacular content to Indians. Their content ranges from news to inspirational content and even jobs, where users can tune in to listen to information on-the-go. Mela Mela is an e-commerce platform that enables group buying through WhatsApp and Facebook. The platform helps collective buying at much cheaper costs and works much like the popular Chinese platform Pinduoduo. Nonu Nonu is a personal healthcare startup, specializing in hair loss treatment with prescription medicines, shampoos, and more. Vahan Vahan is a recruitment platform which uses Artificial Intelligence to match employers with job seekers. Through its messaging platform, it promises faster recruitment. GreenTiger Two former Microsoft employees Prateek Swain and Tyler Burnam launched GreenTiger, which helps Indians invest in the US stock market. The startup is based out of Sunnyvale, California. Binks Binks, launched in 2019, helps women get custom-made clothes online. Through the platform, women can pick styles, take a photograph and upload it on the platform along with measurements and then a custom made outfit is delivered in three days.

These 10 Indian startups are taking part in Y Combinator’s demo day

India Inc on Saturday termed the Budget as "growth provoking and welfare inducing" but said that urgent implementation of the measures proposed will be crucial for achieving desired outcomes, while acknowledging that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had "little room" to manoeuvre. Soon after Sitharaman unveiled the Union Budget for 2020-21 in Parliament woven around the themes of aspirational India, and economic development for all and caring society, India Inc took to Twitter to share views on the announcements.
 The finance minister proposed new slabs and reduced tax rates under them for an individual income of up to Rs 15 lakh per annum, if a taxpayer opts for foregoing exemptions and deductions.
 She also proposed to remove dividend distribution tax on companies, and henceforth the tax will be shifted to recipients at the applicable rate.
 "Amidst global turbulence and nations dealing with bushfires &amp; corona virus, FM Sitharaman has looked to craft a granular long-term strategy to focus on vital issues. The nation was requesting kuch 'caro na' to her, however she had little room to manoeuvre! (sic)," RPG Enterprises Chairman <keyword id="52673" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="harsh-goenka">Harsh Goenka</keyword> tweeted. "FM promises end to tax harassment to India Inc. correcting companies act to decriminalise many non-compliances.  "Sector specific allocations and reforms in direct tax will firmly handhold industry and startups in their economic pursuits. Budget envisages creating a caring society, greater trust in citizens and transparency in administration which is a sign of a matured economy," said Suraj Malik Partner, BDO India LLP.
 "DDT removal is good as it increases dividends received in the hands of the taxpayer - however, such receipts to now are taxable in their hands. What is the good in filing tax returns? 
Tax filing is compulsory if your total income in a financial year exceeds the minimum income which is exempt from tax i.e. Rs 2.5lakhs. Even if your taxes have been paid in full, you should still file a tax return if your income is above this threshold. Those who are seeking a refund, can get it by filing a return. Having a proper trail of filing also helps in securing loans and visas. 
 
What is assessment year? 
Most of us know financial year is the 12 month period that begins on 1st April and ends on 31st March. Your taxes are calculated for this period. Say if you started working in June 2015, your financial year is 2015-16 which ends on 31st March 2016. Assessment year is the year in which tax return is filed for a financial year. The assessment year is 2016-17 for financial year 2015-16. It is the year in which your income details are submitted to the tax department. While preparing your return, you must make sure you select the assessment year correctly. 
 
How should I prepare my tax return? 
If you always saw your parents do a paper return, those days are long gone. E-filing of your tax return is compulsory if your annual income exceeds Rs 5 lakhs. 
 
If you are salaried, some e-filers allow you to upload your Form 16 and your return is automatically populated. Form 16 takes care of your income from salaries. But your income tax return should include every income earned by you. Do you have any interest income from a fixed deposit or a savings account? Include that in your tax return under ‘income from other sources’. If there is any income from a prize or internship or rental income that should be included too. 
 
From your gross total income ‘deductions’ can be claimed. These deductions reduce your total taxable income and you end up paying lower tax. Make sure you make the most of them. The most popular deductions are section 80C and section 80D. You can claim it, if you are enrolled for EPF, deposited in PPF or invested in ELSS during the financial year. Under section 80D, deduction is allowed for medical insurance. 
 
What should I do about <keyword id="17506" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="TDS">TDS</keyword>? 
Your employer deducts TDS from the salary you are paid. The bank cuts some TDS on your interest income. Anybody who pays you cuts some tax on the payment. This helps the government get its share of taxes as you get your payment. This tax deducted on your income is called TDS. TDS is linked with your PAN. You can locate all the TDS deducted from your income in one document called the Form 26AS. At the time of filing your tax returns, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TDS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TDS</a> that appears in your Form 26AS is adjusted against your tax dues. If higher TDS is deducted, you are eligible for a refund. Or your return will show a tax due if TDS was short. You must pay any dues before submitting your return. 
 
Anything else I should keep in mind? 
1. Remember to verify your return after submitting it. After your return is submitted, an acknowledgement is received from the tax department. You should now verify your return. This can be done easily via <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=netbanking&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">netbanking</a> through your bank account or via aadhaar OTP. Verification is a critical step to return filing. A return which is not verified is not considered filed. 
 
2. Remember to disclose stocks of your employer which are already vested, if they are listed on a stock exchange outside India. It is mandatory to include these foreign assets in your tax return. 
 
3. Make sure you mention your personal email id in your return and keep track of all communication received from the tax department.

Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle company Tesla is working on moving driver profiles to the cloud for backing up driver profiles. In Tesla software updates reports there is a reference to a new feature called "Cloud Profiles", which gives the user the option to aEnable Vehicle Sync' for individual driver profiles. Musk previously said cloud-synced profiles were on the way and one can expect Cloud Profiles feature to be available in a software update later this year. Musk has also been talking about putting user profiles in the cloud to automatically load all preferred settings onto a new Tesla vehicle. US-based rental car company <keyword id="187854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hertz" source="Orion">Hertz</keyword> recently announced that it had ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles, however Musk said no contract has been signed with Hertz after the rental car company Meanwhile, Hertz told BBC that deliveries of the Teslas have already started. "As we announced last week, Hertz has made an initial order of 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles and is investing in new EV (electric vehicle) charging infrastructure across the company's global operations," a spokeswoman was quoted as saying. Hertz refused to confirm if a contract had or had not been signed with Tesla in the light of Musk's tweet, adding it did not discuss details of its business relationships or discussions. Elon Musk's Tesla is working on creating back ups for driver profiles

Satya Nadella-run <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> is in advanced talks to invest in Airbnb-backed Indian budget hotel chain <keyword id="2808667" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword> at a valuation of $9 billion, the media reported on Friday. According to a TechCrunch report citing sources, a deal may close soon but the "proposed size of the investment is unclear". Both Microsoft and OYO declined to comment on the reports. The Ritesh Agarwal-run hospitality chain has Airbnb, Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing and ride-hailing firm Grab as strategic investors. The news comes after OYO announced earlier this month that it has raised $660 million from global institutional investors as <keyword id="4462417" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tlb">TLB</keyword> (Term Loan B). A company statement had said that the offer was oversubscribed by 1.7 times and the company received commitments of close to $1 billion from leading institutional investors. "We are delighted by the response to OYO's maiden TLB capital raise that was oversubscribed by leading global institutional investors. We are thankful for the trust that they have placed in OYO's mission of creating value for owners and operators of hotels and homes across the globe," said Abhishek Gupta, Group Chief Financial Officer, OYO. The company said it will utilise these funds to retire its past debts, strengthen the balance sheet and other business purposes including investment in product technology, it said. OYO is the first Indian startup to be publicly rated by Moody's and <keyword id="82981" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fitch">Fitch</keyword>, two of the leading international rating agencies. The Microsoft deal "may also involve OYO shifting to use its cloud services," the report mentioned. OYO has aggressively been expanding its operations to several markets including Southeast Asia, Europe and the US in recent years.
