Despite having that unpaid support, Johnson and her husband pay $2,600 a month for childcare and cleaning — the sort of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/grandparents-cant-look-after-grandkids-still-work-full-time-2024-9">paid village</a> that Johnson says is essential when both <keyword id="19987662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parents" source="keywords">parents</keyword> are working. "Life is currently a juggle between time and money," said Johnson, whose kids are 2 and 3. Johnson and her husband both work full-time, and Johnson also runs a website,<a target="_blank" href="https://amybabys.com/"> Amy Baby</a>. "I feel if we don't use the time wisely to create more revenue streams, we're just going to sink," she told BI. Parents around the country are struggling to pay for <keyword id="23417837" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="childcare-costs" source="keywords">childcare costs</keyword>—which are often higher than a mortgage or rent. In 2018 (the most recent year for which data is available), median childcare costs ranged from $4,800 in small counties for a school-age kid at home to $15,400 for an infant at a center, <a href="https://blog.dol.gov/2023/01/24/new-childcare-data-shows-prices-are-untenable-for-families" target="_blank">according</a> to the Department of Labor. Adjusted for inflation, that was $5,000 to $17,000 in 2022 money. In addition to childcare, many families find they need to pay for other domestic services, like transportation for their kids, grocery pickup, or cleaning—essentials that parents say they simply don't have time for while juggling their careers. That leaves families like Johnson's "trying our best to keep our heads above water," she said. It's a familiar refrain for many parents around the country. Here's what five other parents are paying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-tiny-house-village-kids-have-own-homes-3-years-later-2023-5">create the village</a> they need to survive. <h2>A mom of 3 in rural North Dakota: $1,300+ a month</h2>Katie Nostrum relies on unpaid childcare from her three kids, who are 9, 2, and 6 months old. When the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/school-start-times-in-conflict-dont-mesh-with-work-2023-9">kids aren't in school</a> or at day care, Nostrum's grandparents watch them as Nostrum works as a postmaster and her partner works in a welding shop. Day care for the two younger kids costs $650 every two weeks, or over $1,300 a month. Nostrum's town is very rural — about 45 minutes away from the nearest store. Like many rural Americans, she has limited options for childcare and other support. "There are not a lot of options to create a village, no after or before school programs, etc," she said. <h2>A Texas mom of 3: $1,090 a month</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/notastarvingartistgirl/?hl=en">Jessica Lemmons</a> lives in Bryan, Texas, with her husband and three kids, ages 10, 5, and 2. She pays about $1,090 a month for childcare, which includes day care tuition for her youngest and occasional babysitting for all three. The costs would be a lot higher if Lemmons couldn't count on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/having-children-pushed-me-away-from-my-career-2022-4">unpaid help</a> from friends and bartering the skills of her husband, who is a chef. "I am very fortunate in that I have close friends here who are childless by choice, who genuinely love spending time with my kids," she said. "I do make sure I have the capacity to feed them tasty meals whenever they're doing so." <h2>Mom of 1, outside Chicago: $2,000+ a month</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.lorealthompsonpayton.com/">L'Oreal Thompson Payton</a>, a freelance writer who lives outside Chicago, pays $497 each week to send her 3-year-old to preschool. On rare occasions, she <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-saved-childcare-costs-by-swapping-babysitting-with-a-mom-2021-10">uses a babysitter</a>. She and her husband also pay $25 an hour for a cleaner and hire one occasionally if they have guests coming to stay. While she pays for some of her village, Thompson Payton also cultivates unpaid support by connecting with day care parents and neighbors who also have young children. While the costs are high, Thompson Payton said the benefits are well worth the money. "I think there's a lot of unnecessary guilt and shame that can come up with having a 'paid' village,'" she said. "As much as I love being a mom, it's important for me, my sanity, and our marriage that I have an identity outside that, which would simply not be possible if we didn't have paid support." <h2>Mom of 2 in Tennessee: $520 a month</h2>Miriam Udy was paying $1,600 a month for childcare in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intergenerational-living-benefits-for-kids-free-babysitting-2024-10">the San Francisco Bay Area</a> when she got pregnant with her second. She and her husband relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee, in part because they couldn't afford to pay more than $3,000 a month in childcare costs. After moving, she paid $520 a month for care for her daughter. Her son qualified for free preschool because he has special needs. Now that both kids are in school, Udy is looking for a helper to get the kids off the bus, do homework with them, and drive them to activities. She also budgets for summer camp costs, which exceeded $4,000 last year. <h2>A mom of 2 in New York: $500 a month</h2>Aghogho Oluese quit her job when she got pregnant with her second. "The cost of childcare was so high that I would've only netted $500 a month if I had stayed in my former job," she said. Since then, she's launched<a target="_blank" href="https://blwforbusymoms.com/"> Baby-Led Weaning For Busy Moms</a>. She provides the bulk of childcare for her two children but still pays to build her village. Her older child goes to aftercare which is $15 an hour, and the family has a weekly cleaner at $30 an hour. Occasionally, Oluese pays a babysitter $30 an hour to watch both kids. Overall, she spends about $500 a month on paid help. "I wouldn't be able to do all that I do during the day without it," she said. Sort of.Living in the headquarters of late-stage capitalism is nearly synonymous with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gifts-kids-holidays-valentines-day-easter-2024-2">having more possessions</a> than we need or can easily manage, and our kids are prime examples.Now that we are in a new school year, some semblance of organization will help you maintain your cool. Here are a few tips for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/professional-declutterer-shares-why-people-hold-on-to-things-2023-3">keeping your kids' stuff from taking over</a>.<h2 id="ab7a40af-ca55-4a25-b645-54e503e87a83">Store things vertically</h2>The first best way to get clutter out of the way is to go vertical. This is particularly good for vast collections of lightweight toys. Try hanging a net from the ceiling or high on a wall to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teddy-bears-through-the-years-2018-9">corral all the stuffies</a>. They're easy to put away and can stand guard to keep monsters at bay.Shelving or tall drawer units can also keep precious treasures off the floor; just make sure to anchor them to the wall so they don't topple over. Provide a stool if necessary so your child can reach their things without your help.Because surfaces are magnets for clutter, think about having fewer tables, dressers, and desktops available. Instead, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bookshelf-wealth-tiktok-interior-design-trend-cozy-lived-in-2024-1">provide bookshelves</a> and furniture with drawers.<h2 id="259ada73-9f4c-40d7-b8ab-a054bd607d0b">Choose the right containers</h2>If you've ever visited a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/montessori-school-cost-mortgage-payment-2024-2">Montessori classroom</a>, you'll know that every item in the room has a designated home, one designed specifically for it. To recreate that in your house, choose a container for every type of possession and avoid the dreaded black hole of a traditional toy box.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-organized-playrooms-cleaning-2020-4">Kids are very good at organizing</a> if given the proper tools. They might even think it's fun; they haven't yet learned to consider it a painful chore. Containers for toys should follow these conventions:<ol><li>They're easy to open and close.</li><li>They're easy to access and put away.</li><li>The contents are simple to identify.</li></ol>If your kid can read, get out the label-maker. If not, get creative. Draw a picture of the item on a piece of masking tape, tape a photo, or glue an actual sample on the front of the container. Make it impossible to misunderstand what goes where.<ol start="4"><li>They should be the right size for the job</li></ol>If you have 12 million Lego blocks, choose a box (or boxes) that will hold them all, or they'll end up everywhere. If your collection of doll clothes only fills a quarter of the container they're assigned, soon all kinds of other items will find their way in, and you've got another mess on your hands.When my kids were little, a very smart person told me that they had no idea what I meant when I told them to clean their rooms. It's just too broad a concept. Instead, ask the kids to put all their books back on the shelves, or to put their dinosaur collection in the box marked with a Triceratops. Specificity is the key to success here.<h2 id="1db9175c-037a-4a0b-9b78-851c0c46be1c">Always declutter</h2>If you don't have enough space or containers for all the things your kids own, it's time to downsize. And it's never too early to teach kids how to let go of their unused stuff. Even asking them to find one thing they no longer want is good practice; it introduces the concept. And it's one that we, as a society, don't generally emphasize.As always, model the behavior you want to see. Putting your own stuff away when you're done with it will help reinforce the message that life is nicer when you're not tripping over your possessions.

I wanted to help parents go into parenthood with a firm understanding of the costs, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/status-symbol-items-for-parents-snoo-doona-tripp-trapp-2024-7">not just for baby gear</a> and childcare but also for unexpected items that go hand-in-hand with parenting. I started<a target="_blank" href="https://www.financialdoula.com/"> Financial Doula</a> before my son's first birthday.I've seen that adding a baby to your family can easily cost $2,000 to $3,000 a month, especially if you're <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-paid-over-fifty-thousand-dollars-for-childcare-2024-11">hiring childcare</a>. Yet, I encourage my clients to think beyond cost: time becomes even more precious when you become a parent. Childcare changes</h2>Childcare is a massive expense that many parents know to budget for. However, I've learned that first-time parents need to have a lot of flexibility in this budget line.During the first year, changing child-care situations two or three times is normal. You don't know what will work for you or your baby until you live it. So, if you're planning on family watching your child, budget extra for occasional paid childcare. If you're planning on day care, consider creating a buffer in case you need a nanny. Changing your mind is OK; having financial resources can make that easier.<h2 id="b806abbe-7cde-4be9-9386-6fb94a38a975">2. Physical and mental health</h2>In the first year postpartum, there are so many small supports that can help parents, especially moms. A lactation consultant, postpartum doula, or sleep coach can significantly improve your quality of life. Yet, I see a lot of people who don't budget for these services because they're expensive and can be seen as wants, not needs. Still, parents need to take care of their physical and mental health.<h2 id="8505af0b-90fb-41ad-8462-83aa17056d58">3. A paid village</h2>Next are items that can make running a household easier: things like lawn maintenance, a cleaning service, meal delivery kits, etc. If you have two working parents, these are essential.Sometimes, women need help in justifying these costs, especially if their male partner is making more money than they are. I try to remind families that having a baby is a combined, joint decision. Investments in items that make housekeeping and childcare easier benefit both parents, not just the mom. Unfortunately, remembering that requires a shift in our cultural mindset.<h2 id="306b40b2-6be4-44fd-88b7-a6f1d20deda2">These 2 questions can help open money conversations</h2>Having a baby brings a lot of financial stress that many couples haven't faced before. You can never predict all the costs, but having honest conversations about finances and money psychology can help you and your partner understand each other's behavior around money. These questions are a great starting point:<ul><li>What are your priorities during this period of life? For the next two years, where do you want most of your energy directed? Are there ways that you're spending your money, time, or energy that you'd like to shift?</li><li>What does it mean to you to raise and care for a child? What do you envision your family dynamics and interactions as? How can intentional spending and budgeting help you reflect that?</li></ul>These are questions I consider as we think about having a second baby. Right now, my husband has an intense career where he works long hours outside the home. I'm focused on launching my business. We're spending a lot of time thinking about what a second child might mean for the family as a whole and its impact on each of us individually. If we decide to grow our family, I want to be very clear about the costs — those we can plan for and those we can't predict.

Or, I could leave with a two-week notice period.This meant that, in my profession, I could laterally move to other roles immediately or take a brief <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-six-figure-job-solo-travel-career-break-no-regret-2024-10">vacation between jobs</a> without disrupting my career trajectory.In the UK, notice periods are a minimum of three months, which I found really frustrating.I'm <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-an-education-program-that-helps-retain-employees-2022-11">not looking to change roles</a>, but I worry that I will be overlooked for potential future jobs due to the lengthy notice period and a more laborious handover transition.<h2 id="4997bb13-d122-46c2-be94-b2eed27546ce">But London's work-life balance has been a huge relief</h2><div type="image" title="Pooja Shah with husband in red Indian wedding attire" height="3840" width="4976" msid="115301512" hostid="261" sizebytes="1571084"></div>My salary has been pretty comparable across both cities. I have not been contacted by an employer outside work hours, while on vacation, or on sick days.It's been a welcome relief from my days in New York when I always felt obligated to keep my work phone on.<h2 id="5dd76f89-4839-438a-b656-9830925b4d67">The cultural differences made finding friends a challenge</h2>When I was living in New York, I felt like people were more sociable and open to getting to know each other. For example, if you'd like the jeans to last longer, you have them hung dry or brought to a dry cleaner, especially if they are black; you don't want the colors to fade.Some items, especially those with embellishments, need to be hand-washed. Bathroom rugs need to be refreshed in the dryer or shaken outside, at minimum, weekly.When washing a comforter, quilt, blanket, or event sheets, you can let them air dry as soon as they come out of the washing machine. They help me feed our pet fish and help me pick up after our six dogs — I don't let them touch their droppings, but they like to point them out to me so I can clean them up. They also carry their own toys and juice up to bed every night. They are very competitive, so when one does something I want them to do, I praise them, and the other two quickly follow suit.I even <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-potty-train-kids">potty trained them</a>, and they picked it up so quickly. I made sure they were ready and understood what they needed to do. I had them drink lots of juice and asked them every 20 to 30 minutes if they needed to go. I gave them huge rewards when they did something in the potty — things they wouldn't normally be allowed, like chocolate or candy; plus, I used a sticker rewards chart and lots of books, songs, and videos all about potty training and being "big boys" now. They're very independent and actually don't need me constantly. They play well by themselves, especially character-led games they make up. Being one of the triplets is like having best friends to play with all the time, which makes me feel less bad about money being so tight and not being able to afford many luxuries. <h2 id="31ddf1ee-ee48-4e51-ae01-04ebadfec186">Having triplets is so expensive</h2>It might sound obvious, but when the cost of something like theme park entry or football lessons and the uniform is multiplied by three, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-costs-without-grandparents-help-millennial-parents-boomers-2024-10">so many things are unachievable</a> on the budget we have.I worked out in their first year alone, and their expenses came to around $23,500 when you take into account three of everything — car seats, cribs, high chairs, a triplet stroller, clothes, diapers, and more. The formula cost nearly $1,570 alone. And that's not including the new house we needed to move to, as well. My mom and dad helped a lot, and my ex's mom and dad.I've been trying to decide whether it's getting better or worse because they eat more now than they did a year ago. They'll probably have two sandwiches each for lunch, for example, and that's times three. We go through two loaves of bread a week. Some weeks, I've had to borrow money from my mom for food. I try to keep the cost as low as possible, but we still spend around $105 a week on food, and that's me really scrimping on what we can get through the week with — no luxury items. It's pure survival.We scrape by. I buy most of their clothes secondhand online and sell anything they've outgrown. But that did not happen in Valencia.<h2 id="24b81fb8-4f22-4359-a97e-6f0760015239">Worse than Hurricane Milton</h2>I remember watching the news of Hurricane Milton hitting Florida last month and how Floridians were preparing for it.Residents boarded up their windows with large wooden panels; store owners were getting ready for it, and people evacuated.The Tampa mayor even urged people to leave and said that anyone who stayed would die.After Hurricane Milton, there <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3zdg2wlvqo#:~:text=One%20of%20at%20least%20a,died%20across%20the%20US%20state.">were at least 16 deaths.</a> Meanwhile, here in Valencia, it's already about 10 times as many.The Spanish Meteorological Agency had issued an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.antena3.com/noticias/el-tiempo/actualidad/dana-valencia-que-pasaron-mas-10-horas-alerta-aemet-aviso-moviles-alert_20241031672370a3d058410001ca758c.html">alert days before</a> the storm. But on Tuesday, nothing happened. There was absolute calm in the morning. People were going to work and to university. When the local alerts came, the storm was already happening.<h2 id="27ab23b6-b666-4dce-ada9-fd22df28f8fa">A wake-up call</h2>Undoubtedly, human errors were made. I've never seen anything like it.In a country like Spain, with the means, agencies, and intelligence we have, it is horrible that this happened.At a certain point, authorities were saying 50 dead, then 60, then 70, then 90. To me, that doesn't sound like much. I believe that when the waters recede and the mud clears, more dead bodies will be found.

This innovative collaboration will help advance Google's 24/7 carbon-free energy goal by ensuring cloud services and operations in India are supported by clean energy and thereby contribute to the <keyword id="20289318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-growth" source="keywords">sustainable growth</keyword> of Google in India. Adani had previously announced plans to set up data centres run on clean energy. It had in October 2022 leased 4.64 lakh square feet of space at its data centre in Noida to Raiden Infotech, an entity of Google.
