I am a huge fan of holiday movies, and I also love rom-coms, but I had never seen my experience represented in those genres. But then once I started, you know, transitioning from acting into writing and directing, it kind of hit me that I could be the person who could tell that story. You know, it's a romantic comedy and you know, it needs to have those like big comedic moments.Man: From where?Abby: I'm really not interested in meeting anyone tonight.Jane: I am.Clea: Harper's family, you know, kind of was born from that. Just like, what is the family that you're gonna go home to in this situation and it's going to just be-Abby: Everyone say Christmas.Tipper: No, don't say that just smile.Clea: The most uncomfortable.Tipper: Blurry, boring. Nope, nope, nope. Okay. None of these will do, we will try again tomorrow.Clea: Came out to my mom on Christmas day, we were in the middle of a fight and it just flew out of my mouth. Me saying something along the line of "You don't know me at all," and then my mom saying, "Yes, I do." And then me saying, "Well, yeah, but did you know so and so is my girlfriend?" And then both of us freezing and being like, oh, oh no, what just happened? And then after what felt like three and a half hours my mother just saying, "No, I didn't know that." And then walking out of the room and then we just never talked about it again. We were able to repair it. So that was like the good news. It was not great until later in life when I got into my twenties.Tipper: What are you doing in the closet?Clea: What was so important to me in this story was to not vilify anyone.Abby: So Sloane and Eric, you guys make gift baskets, right?Sloane: No. We create curated gift experiences inside of handmade reclaimed wood vessels.Clea: 'Cause coming out is not an easy thing to do no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, we all have the opportunity to reach the other side and you know, and still deserve to be loved, and deserve to be accepted and even if the people around us don't always handle it exactly the right way immediately, it doesn't mean that they can't also grow and that they can't also change. Every queer person has gone through it and you know, knows what that feeling is of, you know, not being out. Wherever you are in that process, be nice to yourself. Like you're going through something that is not gonna last forever and you need to love yourself through it. You have an idea like, I wanna come out this holiday season, I'm gonna do it. And if you get there and it doesn't feel like the right thing, that's okay. There's no rush. It's also really important to find outlets in the community, you know, whether it's like friends, or however young people communicate, I don't know, TikTok.Abby: What are you doing on your phone?John: I left a gentleman alone in my apartment so I'm tracking him to make sure he leaves.Abby: You're tracking him?John: Yeah. But what does draw you to these roles? I still don't think I've seen you do a rom-com.I know, I haven't! I don't know. I really need to think about an answer to this question and really formulate an intelligent, interesting answer because my answer is very much always just like, "I don't really know why." I just suppose I find, as an actor, that to be the most interesting material to play, and not even necessarily as a viewer.I love comedy and romantic comedy. I'm super late to the game, but I just started watching "Hacks," and that's my wheelhouse. I love that kind of show. If a show gets too serious, sometimes I'm totally not into it. But as an actor, it's what I find interesting, and it's what flexes my muscles, and it's what I like to play.It's your wheelhouse. It's the thing you're probably most familiar with.Yeah. I don't know. Why do certain people like playing certain kinds of music? They just like it.My counterpoint would be that playing a rom-com lead is deceptively difficult, but these are all different skill sets. Have you ever wanted to do that, or do you prefer to watch those things and not be in them?No, I'd love to. I think they're very difficult. I think finding a good script is very difficult as well. Obviously, totally doable still, but I don't think it's necessarily a walk in the park by any means, and I don't think everyone can do it.<h2>On the hardest scene she's ever filmed and the end of 'The Handmaid's Tale'</h2><div type="image" title="the handmaid's tale" height="1400" width="2004" msid="110510953" hostid="261" sizebytes="39188"></div>In your long career of filming many hard scenes, what was the hardest scene for you to shoot, physically or emotionally?The hardest one I ever did — there have been some really, really close runners-up — but it was a scene on "Handmaid's." I don't know what fucking season, but there was a scene where June is outside, and I don't even know why she wanted to step outside, and she's in her underwear, basically, and she's bleeding out, and Nick comes and finds her, and it's raining, and she's laying in the mud.And the plain, cold truth of it is, it just was absolutely fucking freezing. And I was laying in the mud, barely wearing anything in a rain machine, and that was definitely physically a tough one.I always seem to wind up in the rain somehow. There's a lot of rain.You're going back to film the final season soon, right?Yeah. This summer.Do you think it will be weird to return to a show like that <a target="_blank" href="https://people.com/elisabeth-moss-pregnant-with-her-first-baby-8553517">as a new mom</a>? It sounds like you're good at separating acting and your real life, though.Oh, I think it'll be lovely. I think it'll be a whole new added perspective to life. I'm sure I'll be bringing that to June and to the show.I guess time will tell, but of course, I'm sure it's going to affect all parts of my life. But we're used to having lots of babies and lots of moms and dads on set, and we're a very baby and kid-friendly set. So I don't think it's going to be a huge adjustment for us.Is it safe to say you know how the series ends?Yes.How do you feel about the ending?I don't even know how to not say anything about it. I've known for a while how it was going to end, so I don't think I can say anything. I'm too scared to say the wrong thing accidentally.I'm too nervous. I don't have my patter down. I'm not ready yet.You don't have your one tease line ready.Exactly. This show's like my other baby.I can say this: I think this whole season is absolutely for the fans. It's definitely for our audience. I think with any sort of objectivity or any perspective, you just cherish the experience more and more, hopefully. And I think when we finished, it was time to finish, and we felt good about that.I think it's pretty great that after 10 years, you look back, and your memories haven't soured — you don't go, "Oh, you know what? Actually, that kind of sucked." It's actually pretty amazing to be able to look back after a decade and go, "Yeah, that was pretty special."I feel more grateful as time goes on, I think, for that experience. Granted, it feels like 30 years ago.Is there anything that transports you right back to set? Are you like, "I don't want to put any midcentury modern furniture in my home. I saw enough of it for years."Definitely! Not like I don't like midcentury modern, it's just that I can't not think of the show.There's nothing in my apartment that's midcentury. I love it when I go to somebody else's home or somebody else's apartment, I admire it and I'm like, "Look how beautiful that is." But I personally can't have it in my home because I can't not think about sets and "Mad Men."Are there any roles you've regretted turning down?I don't think I've ever turned anything down that I was really regretful of.I almost didn't do "Handmaid's," but thank God I did end up saying yes. I just came off nine years on "Mad Men," and I was shooting the second season of "Top of the Lake." I was like, "God, I really wasn't planning on doing another TV show so quickly."But then the idea that anybody else was going to do the show — that killed me. And I was like, "Nope, I'm going to do it." "I think everybody wants to work with Rian, everybody wants to work with Natasha. "Retrospectively, I can tell you I have experience with this story. But back then I would have been like, 'No, I'm fine. My parents are fine with it. Everything's fine.' That's bull----. It's been hard. It's been weird. It's that way for everyone."Stewart admitted to feeling an expectation to be a spokesperson for the gay community, when asked."I did more when I was younger, when I was being hounded about labeling myself," Stewart answered. "I had no reticence about displaying who I was. I was going out every day knowing I'd be photographed while I was being affectionate with my girlfriend, but I didn't want to talk about it.""I did feel an enormous pressure, but it wasn't put on me by the [LGBTQIA+] community. People were seeing those pictures and reading these articles and going, 'Oh, well, I need to be shown.' I was a kid, and I felt personally affronted. Now I relish it. I love the idea that anything I do with ease rubs off on somebody who is struggling. That s---'s dope! When I see a little kid clearly feeling themselves in a way that they wouldn't have when I grew up, it makes me skip."

Not to mention, if their support systems outside of the family are also rocky, it would mean isolation if you are being rejected both within and outside of your family," Robin-Brown told Insider. This is very scary for people. "<h2>There is no universal 'perfect time' to come out</h2>Robinson-Brown told Insider that there really is no "perfect time" to come out. While many coming out stories depict high schoolers, queer people of all ages make the decision to come out. A person's family situation and ability to come out safely can make a difference."I would say that whenever you decide to come out, make sure you have support. Reactions and responses can be varied," Robinson-Brown said. "Make sure you have someone in your corner who has your back and will be there to help you remember that you are still an amazing ass person regardless of what anyone says."<h2>Many people don't come out because of the fear they will be kicked out or rejected by family</h2>For some, coming out as queer or trans is met with loving family support. It isn't as simple for others. <a href="https://lesley.edu/article/the-cost-of-coming-out-lgbt-youth-homelessness">According to the True Colors Fund</a>, 40% of the US homeless youth population is made up of <keyword id="729067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBTQ">LGBTQ</keyword> people. A study conducted by <a href="https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/serving-our-youth-lgbtq/">the Williams Institute at UCLA</a> found 46% of homeless LGBTQ youth ran away from home because of unsupportive families and 43% were kicked out. The pandemic has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/well/family/LGBTQ-youth-teenagers-pandemic-coronavirus.html">made LGBTQ youth more anxious, depressed</a>, and disconnected from their community, as many queer kids have been forced to stay in unsupportive households. <a href="https://medicine.yale.edu/news-article/20510/">A study by the Yale School of Medicine</a> found 83% of the world's LGBTQ population remains in the closet in part due to these barriers. While some people may feel the community is "beyond coming out stories" many people remain in the closet into adulthood out of fear of losing their entire family. "Everybody's story is different," John, Abby's gay best friend, told her after recalling being kicked out by his dad. <h2>Some people found Harper's coming out story to be deeply relatable — and important to see on screen</h2>Many Twitter users thought that while some of Harper's actions in the film might have been mean or unfair, they were deeply influenced by her coming out.Because Harper was so scared of what her parents would think, she lies to Abby. The act of hiding her true self and doing hurtful things to hide herself in the process rang true for many viewers' own coming out stories.
