As ‘<keyword id="1071127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gamification">gamification</keyword>’ gets hot all over the world, MindTickle, too, has created waves globally. Here is a snapshot that captures the start-up’s vision and viability. 
 
Who runs MindTickle (www.mindtickle.com): Four <keyword id="382595" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="co-founders">co-founders</keyword> – <keyword id="2000038" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepak-Diwakar">Deepak Diwakar</keyword>, <keyword id="2000039" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krishna-Depura">Krishna Depura</keyword>, <keyword id="1141504" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mohit-Garg">Mohit Garg</keyword> and <keyword id="2000016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nishant-Mungali">Nishant Mungali</keyword>.  Prior to starting up, Mohit was a director in PwC’s management consulting practice at New Jersey and worked with a number of telcos in the US, Europe, and <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> on various strategy projects. In addition, he has done <keyword id="187755" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="product-development">product development</keyword> for <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> start-ups such as <keyword id="270697" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aruba-Networks">Aruba Networks</keyword>. The other three worked with <keyword id="1010923" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PubMatic">PubMatic</keyword> before starting MindTickle although Krishna had an earlier stint with <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>. The start-up was launched in August 2011 and its products were rolled out in beta in early 2012. Besides its headquarters and development centre in Pune, the company has a sales &amp; marketing office in <keyword id="12161" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="San-Francisco">San Francisco</keyword> as it is aggressively targeting the <keyword id="35193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="us-market">US market</keyword> for expansion. 
 
What inspired the venture: A hobby activity by the foursome led to the Eureka moment. It was called <keyword id="2000046" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TeraMeraIdea">TeraMeraIdea</keyword> and later evolved into an <keyword id="6541953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="online-platform">online platform</keyword> that allowed users to experiment with new ideas in the Internet, media and social business space. “We had quizzes and knowledge-based treasure hunts covering loads of topics. And people simply loved to learn things through our quizzes,” recalls Krishna, one of the co-founders. That’s when the four realised that learning can be fun and interesting without being scary or boring. 
 At the same time, they saw the rise of some new technologies and new concepts – Cloud, for instance, and increasing mobile penetration; social networking, casual gaming and gamification. The four of them were quite convinced that a big opportunity was out there to transform the learning experience with the help of social and gamification elements. So they did some more experiments with knowledge-based games, and worked with <keyword id="2000019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="LD">L&amp;D</keyword> experts and researchers to learn the best practices in interactive learning. “Finally, we deployed pilots for corporate houses and the feedback was just awesome,” says Krishna. “It was noon-clear that <keyword id="2000051" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Conventional-learning">conventional learning</keyword> would take a backseat in the next few years. So we decided to take the lead and create a next-generation learning platform,” he adds. 
 
What’s the pitch: <keyword id="2000054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Effective-training">Effective training</keyword> and better <keyword id="610471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="employee-engagement">employee engagement</keyword> that generate <keyword id="2000055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Business-results">business results</keyword>. Most businesses are deeply dissatisfied with their training programmes although they have invested a large chunk into their human assets. Classroom methods are near-dead, especially in a corporate environment, as they are resource-heavy, limited in scope (not customisable), and lack the scale and global reach-out required for today’s mobile and <keyword id="2000092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Distributed-workforce">distributed workforce</keyword>. On the other hand, a conventional e-learning system like the CBT or the WBT fails to engage and motivate the end user. “But at MindTickle, we have created a next-gen learning platform that enables enterprises to create and deliver very engaging and effective training,” clarifies Krishna. 
 
Why the name MindTickle: During its research days, the start-up came up with a unique content creation technique that would transform chunks of data into interesting mind tickles – a series of brain-teasers that would help you gain knowledge through problem solving and content discovery. Hence, the name. 
 
How it works: Simply put, MindTickle has created a Cloud-based learning platform, which enables enterprises to deliver their training programmes anywhere, at any time and on any device. Moreover, the same learning platform can be used to train their partners and customers. It features an in-built social and gamification engine that makes the entire learning experience really engaging. This has not only resulted into huge participation, but also ensured increasing level of <keyword id="2000060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Training-completion">training completion</keyword>.

Show me the money: Unlike many start-ups, this one is a venture-funded company and raised an undisclosed seed <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> from <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> in January 2012. That’s not surprising as globally, the training market is worth $200 billion and growing. MindTickle targets medium-to-large enterprises in India and the US, and has in place a robust per-user subscription model. However, it is a <keyword id="2000069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Product-company">product company</keyword> that needs constant cash-burning for ongoing design, development and implementation. “To meet that requirement, we are now putting all the money we earn back into the company and we are not margin-focused at present,” says Krishna. “Of course, no one can ignore break-even and profits, but our first priority is to build more and more world-class products and adopt a scalable go-to-market policy,” he adds. The start-up will also raise more funding as and when it requires the money for incremental growth. 
 
Biggest challenge: Not competition, per se, feels Krishna. According to him, MindTickle’s platform actually complements a lot of existing learning solutions, rather than being a direct competition. For instance, the company has tools, which help create great videos from existing PPTs or help record or create screencasts for training. With the help of such platform integration capabilities, companies in the training space can actually improve their offerings by leveraging multiple content formats. On the other hand, quite a few education tech companies like Udemy, Coursera and <keyword id="1175348" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="edX">edX</keyword> have come up in the <keyword id="6561759" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MOOC">MOOC</keyword> space (<keyword id="1071995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Massive-Open-Online-Courses">Massive Open Online Courses</keyword>) and they are now entering the <keyword id="2000084" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise-environment">enterprise environment</keyword>. Anand revealed that with technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and 5G growing rapidly for ICT players like Ericsson, the company is on the hunt for candidates to fill various leadership positions. “With the rapid technological advancements in the telecom sector and increased focus on AI/Automation, we continue to hire for business-critical roles for further consolidating Ericsson’s leadership position. And of course, with the pandemic and the work from home situation, all hirings and training have gone virtual. “We have switched to virtual classroom training for some of the earlier F2F training as well as encourage our employees to undergo training on our already existing online learning platforms like Degreed etc,” said Anand. Ericsson has also partnered with INSEAD, one of the world’s leading business schools,for upskilling its employees to design an Executive Development program for senior leaders. The company has also partnered with Harvard Business Publishing, a not-for-profit wholly-owned subsidiary of Harvard University, to offer leadership development modules that look into the challenges faced by business leaders and how to address the same. “We also developed a Career Program for our employees focusing on technical upskilling. This program aims to help employees with career planning, goal setting and acquiring relevant skill sets,” shared Anand. Ericsson India is hiring for leadership roles in Artificial Intelligence, data analysts and more as it prepares for the 5G era

<ul><li>The number of Indians employed in Merchant Navy rose by a 35% in 2018. </li><li>The foreign employment figures also went up by 12,133 during the period 2017-2018. </li><li>The Indian government has taken initiatives to enhance the classroom training by including on-board training into the training curriculum in 2016. </li></ul>While India is facing one of its worst unemployment crises among the youth, the number of Indians employed in merchant navy — on Indian and foreign ships — witnessed an <a href="https://www.maritimeprofessional.com/news/indian-seafarers-employment-soared-2018-342905">upsurge</a> of 35% in 2018. According to the Ministry of Shipping's statistics, Indians who enrolled in merchant navy increased from 154,349 in 2017 to 208,799 in 2018, which indicates the growing demand for Indian seafarers not just on Indian ships, but globally on foreign flag vessels as well. This applies across various designations — including nautical officers and engineers among others. In fact, the new entrants on on-board training also rose from 14,307 in 2017 to 19,545 last year — which accounts for 37% growth in the employed youth. Talking of foreign employment figures, the numbers went up from 60,194 to 72,327, during the same time. Government push In 2016, India began providing classroom training for merchant navy and arranging on-board ship training for a hands-on experience, Livemint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/industry/human-resource/employment-of-indians-in-merchant-navy-grows-by-35-globally-in-2018/amp-1550491743524.html">reported</a> citing an official from the shipping ministry. The growth recorded may be attributed to the measures taken over the past four years for maritime training — which includes the revised norms and training curriculum introduced in 2016 by the government. The change in training curriculum was aimed at meeting global standards to increase the number of foreign employers. The government also introduced a 'Comprehensive Inspection Program’ to keep a check on the quality of institutions for training purposes. Additionally, a free of cost e-learning module was also rolled out to skill up the knowledge base of Indian seafarers, ahead of examinations, a senior official from the ministry reportedly said. This came in to overcome the 15-year-old ban on forming new training institutes. Merchant navy jobs in India see huge spike as country sees worsening youth unemployment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>School advocates are optimistic after seeing a Black-father led violence intervention program.</li><li>The program, <keyword id="12507328" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dads-on-duty" source="Orion">Dads on Duty</keyword>, can bridge trust between students of color and white school counselors. </li></ul>It's been a long year and half for Derek Francis. Wading through conversations about race and masks in schools has been taxing on him physically and mentally. Francis is a Black, <keyword id="12507327" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="school-counselor" source="Orion">school counselor</keyword> tasked with running the program at Minneapolis public schools. In the last year, he has watched students ​​- many of whom are of color - anguish over heightened levels of anxiety and depression. COVID-19, the murder of George Floyd, and all of the conversations surrounding school curriculum has been exhausting he told Insider. When he, along with many other school mental-health advocates, saw a Black-father led violence intervention program at a high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, he said he felt serene and optimistic. "That [program] really resonates with me as a father too," Francis told Insider. " So many students want that connection. And having someone to build that relationship with I think that is another big piece about being a good school counselor and supporting students." Many of Francis' peers, and education experts, say Dads on Duty can disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, a system that disproportionately funnels Black and brown students from the classroom into jails and prisons. <h2>Dads on Duty would help school counselors, advocate says </h2>"Dads on Duty" was born out of a group of 40 Black fathers coming together after 23 students in three days were arrested at Southwood High School for fighting. In a school that is <a href="https://www.publicschoolreview.com/southwood-high-school-profile">79% Black</a>, the parents told <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dads-louisiana-high-school-student-violence/">CBS news</a> that they take shifts spending time at the school - greeting students and helping to maintain a positive environment throughout the school day to fend off any disturbances or fights. The fathers want every student to feel heard and protected. The fathers highlighted that most of the students at the high school do not have a male or father figure in their lives. So their aim is to provide that, even if for a few hours a day. Francis agreed with sentiment, noting many of the students he works with long for a consistent male presence in their lives. "A program like this would be the most beautiful alignment you've ever imagined," Francis said. Only a third of school counselors in Minneapolis public schools are people of color. Since school counselors in the country are predominately white, Francis says, Dads on Duty can transform the effectiveness and trust students of color have of white counselors. He says much of their work as counselors is to first address things on an academic front. Students need to be in class. From there, counselors help with behavioral training or college prep. All of those areas can be addressed by a parent of Dads on Duty, Francis said, taking some of the load off of counselors. <h2>Advocates present how a national Dads on Duty program can help break the school-to-prison pipeline</h2><div type="image" title="Close up of a nervous African-American schoolgirl hands while she answering to teacher questions for a mark" height="2688" width="4032" msid="87634347" hostid="261"></div>Since the fathers began their school patrol in Louisiana, there haven't been any fights or arrests. The mayor is <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/29/us/dads-on-duty-louisiana-school-cec/index.html">advocating</a> for the program to be implemented citywide. When fights do take place at schools, experts say, they often end in a suspension, expulsion, or can even lead to an arrest. Suspensions and arrests can also be attributed to behavioral, attendance, and academics. Black students are over-represented in their share of public school suspensions and arrests, making up more than 15% of public school students while accounting for 33% of in school arrests, according to <a href="https://www.edweek.org/which-students-are-arrested-most-in-school-u-s-data-by-school#/overview">Education Week</a>. National data analyzed by the <a href="https://www.aclu.org/issues/juvenile-justice/school-prison-pipeline/school-prison-pipeline-infographic?redirect=racial-justice/infographic-school-prison-pipeline">American Civil Liberties Union</a> found that students who get suspended are three times as likely to be arrested within a year of the incident. School psychologists often work alongside families, school counselors and teachers to formulate an intervention plan addressing social, emotional, behavioral and academic issues for students. Kizzy Albritton, an associate professor in The University of Texas Department of school psychology, told Insider Dads on Duty can provide professionals a breakthrough to bridge connections with parents. "The fact that there are these Black fathers that have taken a very proactive approach to say 'we are going to be a presence in the schools. We're going to ensure that our children feel safe and secure,' I think that is awesome ," she told Insider. "This is an excellent example of families and schools partnering together to improve the social emotional behavioral outcomes for these students." <h2>Dads on Duty can ease burnout Black school counselor says </h2>The fathers in Shreveport told CBS <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">News</keyword> they are looking forward to expanding "Dads on Duty" all over the country. Francis says the program can offer teachers in the 70% of Minneapolis Public Schools that have cops on staff the option of a parent mediator instead. Adam Schouela, who leads the emerging technology group within the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, told Business Insider that call center workers tend to be younger and may not have experience working with others."The idea was, can we create a VR experience for our associates to better help them understand the perspective of our customers?" Schouela said. "What is going on from our customer's perspective?"Fidelity joins the ranks of companies like Hilton in trying to improve existing empathy training by incorporating VR. For both Fidelity and Hilton, adding simulated scenarios provided a step up to help employees better understand each other, as well as the customers they serve. Emotional intelligence, that umbrella term <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emotional-intelligence-how-to-develop-2018-7#find-a-career-mirror-3">that encompasses empathy</a>, is actually high <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-performers-emotionally-intelligent-signs-2019-4">in 90% of top performers</a>. Using VR in empathy training resulted in better overall outcomes for both companies, they told Business Insider.<h2>VR lets workers see the impact of the service they provide</h2>Fidelity's VR training virtually transported workers from call center to the homes of the customer in the mock interaction. The workers address the problem while seeing it play out, so they're connected to a real-life experience they may not have felt personally. They then virtually see the impact of the service they provide, whether positive or negative. This all underscores the bottom line of helping associates understand what the customer is going through, and why they're acting a certain way, to better serve them.The VR training replaced more formal instruction within a classroom. Previously, select staff would enact a role-playing exercise while other new employees watched. With VR, everyone gets to go through every experience as many times as they want."It changes the dynamics of learning," Schouela said. "It changes from one person being active and everybody else being passive to almost the whole process being an active learning process."Schouela tracked the customer satisfaction scores of associates who went through the VR pilot training versus those who didn't. The team found enough of a difference to expand the pilot and think about scaling the program. "We've probably built 30, 40 different virtual reality experiences in order to understand all of this stuff and really, truly see where we can apply these technologies internally within Fidelity and have it make a difference," Schouela said. <h2>Corporate hires at Hilton 'virtually sweat'</h2>VR made a difference within Hilton by exposing corporate hires to an indispensable part of Hilton's business: hotel operations. Most of Hilton's corporate hires (80%) don't have direct hospitality experience, but they are tasked with supporting operations. The company looked for something that would build empathy, but not take corporate employees out of their roles for too long (or cause operational difficulties).That's where the VR Business Immersion program came in. "The experience allows Team Members to move through different hotel departments including housekeeping, engineering, kitchens and front desk," Gretchen Stroud, VP of talent development and team member engagement at Hilton told Business Insider. "They complete modules and 'virtually sweat' as they work through tasks like setting up a room service tray or cleaning a room."Nearly everyone who completed the pilot program last year said they had more empathy and appreciation for operations workers. The pilot was so successful that the VR-based program is now part of Hilton's six global corporate offices, and is required for all team members within their first year, Stroud said.Since the program officially launched, more than 1,200 people have participated in the training, 87% of whom said the experience gave them more empathy and appreciation for the experiences of direct hotel staff. How top companies are using VR to help employees better understand each other - and the customers they serve

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US doesn't have federal requirements for teaching <keyword id="6349323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-history">Black history</keyword> in school curriculums, and only a handful of states have mandated it.</li><li>LaGarrett King, an African American <keyword id="29052" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="history">History</keyword> <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> expert and director of the Carter Center for K-12 Black History Education at the University of Missouri, told Insider about a few different ways educators can work to fix that.</li><li>Existing curriculums, King said, lack Black perspectives and sanitize versions of Black history.</li><li>In order to help solve the problem, teachers could attend professional development trainings, work to promote Black perspectives, and develop curriculums that explore multiple themes within Black history, King advised. </li></ul>As protests against racism and police brutality sweep the nation, US schools are still behind in teaching Black history to students.To date, there are no federal requirements for teaching Black history in the US, and only a handful of states have mandated curriculums to ensure that teachers discuss any Black history subjects.Even then, a lack of oversight makes it difficult to determine if teachers are truly following curriculum guidelines.<a href="https://www.socialstudies.org/system/files/publications/articles/se_810117014.pdf">A 2015 study</a> conducted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture and Oberg Research found that, on average, only 8% or 9% of history class time is devoted to Black history, and some states neglect the subject altogether.In states where Black history is discussed, students often learn about seminal figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks, but frequently receive failing grades when tested on the <keyword id="97526" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Civil-rights">Civil Rights</keyword> movement.<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-history-how-teaching-americas-past-varies-across-the-country/">History textbooks also vary drastically from state to state</a>, with some offering up sanitized versions of Black history than others. In some cases, textbooks refer to slaves as merely "workers," while others fail to address Civil Rights, white supremacy, and oppression altogether.This isn't a new problem. Carter G. Woodson, known as "<a href="https://www.naacp.org/naacp-history-carter-g-woodson/">the father of Black history</a>," created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History to promote the study of Black history way back in 1915. But there's still a lot of work to do.<a href="https://education.missouri.edu/person/lagarrett-king/">LaGarrett King</a>, an African American History education professor at the University of Missouri, has researched the issue extensively. He's developed the <a href="https://education.missouri.edu/learning-teaching-curriculum/carter-center/">Carter Center for K-12 Black History Education</a> to promote Black history research, the education of teachers, and networks to help solve the problem.Here's what King sees is wrong with African American history education in the US, and how he thinks we can fix it. <h2>This isn't a new problem</h2><div type="image" title="Carter G. Woodson" height="1499" width="1999" msid="76663940" hostid="261"></div>The most recent wave of activism within the <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black Lives Matter</keyword> movement has brought to light issues of <a href="https://www.insider.com/police-training-problems-how-to-fix-experts-2020-6">police brutality</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-systemic-racism-in-charts-graphs-data-2020-6">systemic racism</a>, and a lack of Black history education. But none of these are new concepts, and Black Americans have been fighting for change for hundreds of years."Historically, whenever there has been some form of social upheaval, civil rights, or civil disobedience as it pertains to Black people, there has always been a call for more Black history," King told Insider. "For some strange reason, we still cannot get it done."Woodson's development and promotion of <a href="https://africanamericanhistorymonth.gov/about/">Negro History week</a> — conceived and announced in 1925, and which we now know as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-history-month-charts-employment-education-2020-2">Black history month</a> — came in reaction to a mass lynching movement of Black Americans throughout the late 19th to early 20th centuries, King explained."He basically said 'there would be no lynching if lynching didn't start in the classroom,'" King said.During the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, an explosion of Black history interest led to the development of Black history courses around the country. During that time, California become one of the first states to implement Black history education into law.<div type="image" title="Civil Rights demonstration" height="1312" width="2000" msid="76663944" hostid="261"></div>Following that decision, seven other states "passed laws requiring or recommending that the contributions and achievements of minority groups be included in school curricula," according to a <a href="https://www.socialstudies.org/system/files/publications/articles/se_810117014.pdf">special report analyzing the status of Black history in US schools and society</a> that King wrote in 2017.But today, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/juneteenth-schools-education-black-history/">only 12 states</a> formally recognize the importance of teaching Black history in state law.In his 2017 report, King found that only seven of those states have Black history oversight committees. Without an oversight committee, there isn't much accountability for teachers actually addressing the subject in the classroom, he said.In a <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-history-how-teaching-americas-past-varies-across-the-country/">CBS News analysis</a>, reporters found that seven states don't even mention slavery directly in their state standards, while eight states do not mention the Civil Rights movement at all. Furthermore, the study found that only two states specifically address white supremacy, and 16 states list "states' rights" as a cause of the Civil War.All of these issues culminate in a lack of a thoughtful, holistic, and effective understanding of Black history throughout the country. And, according to King, much of that begins at the teacher level.<h2>Teachers often lack the content knowledge to effectively teach Black history</h2><div type="image" title="black history education schools" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76663947" hostid="261"></div>Part of the direction of the Carter Center is to provide education for teachers who may not be equipped with the content knowledge needed to effectively teach Black history, King said."Teachers overwhelmingly are the most important people in teaching Black history, because the curriculum can say anything, but the teachers are the curriculum gatekeepers," King said. "They're the ones that figure out the connections throughout history, and they're the ones that create activities and instructional aspects for students to attend to."According to a 2015 study conducted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture and Oberg Research, a majority of teachers "considered Black history as influential in understanding the complexity of US history," yet the level of class time dedication was far too low. On average, the study found that only one or two history lessons are devoted to the subject, if at all. King said teachers — <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/local/education/teacher-diversity/">a majority of whom are white</a> — often lack the knowledge necessary to teach Black history properly."While a lot of them would like to teach more Black history — and I do believe that the majority of teachers want to be inclusive — the problem is that a lot of them do not have the content knowledge to teach Black history in a way that is really effective," he saidPart of that is due to a lack of mandated Black and ethnic studies courses in teacher education, King said. Often, curriculums present a "Eurocentric" view of history in which ethnic and Black perspectives are left behind.Part of the mission at the Carter Center is to provide workshops on Black history education for teachers around the world. Last year, King led a seminar for 300 teachers on the topic of slavery. And this year, the seminar will focus on examining Black history from a female perspective.King also addressed the importance of white teachers acknowledging identity and privilege within the classroom, and viewing students as citizens who will one day hold their own positions of power."Talk about notions of white identity and privilege within those spaces, and help them understand that this is not something that is supposed to just give you grief or guilt," he said. "It's something to really understand humanity and how our society works, and to create a better society."<h2>In order to teach Black history, instructors must work to promote Black perspectives</h2><h2><div type="image" title="Junteenth march" height="1379" width="2000" msid="76663948" hostid="261"></div></h2>Another essential part in improving the education system is to understand what Black history really is, explained King."A lot of people don't understand what Black history is, or they don't have a theoretical model of what Black history is," he said. "Many people would just say Black history is just history with Black people. Sometimes I like to call that 'white history in blackface."'American classrooms also tend to introduce Black people for the first time through slavery, omitting thousands of years of African history, and contextualizing Black American origins with oppression and violence, which can have a dehumanizing effect, King said.Black and white people have not experienced history in the same way. To simply discuss Black history in the context of white history can provide a dangerous narrative, King said. Just look at Independence Day."July 4, 1776, means nothing to Black people historically," he said. "The majority of Black people were still enslaved, so when we say Independence Day is July 4th, 1776, and we teach that in our curriculum, what are we saying about Black people and other non-white people that were not necessarily free during that particular time?"Rather than recognizing the Fourth of July as Independence Day, many Black communities have long celebrated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/juneteenth-history-legacy-nike-twitter-company-holiday-trump-controversy-2020-6">Juneteenth</a>, a holiday commemorating the ending of slavery, as their day of freedom.<div type="image" title="Brown v Board of Education" height="1339" width="2000" msid="76663949" hostid="261"></div>Juneteenth gained more significant attention this year in the aftermath of George Floyd's death, but the holiday has <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/juneteenth-schools-education-black-history/">historically been overlooked in American classrooms</a>.Similarly, King discussed the idea of implementing Black perspectives into the classroom through the teaching of the Supreme Court case, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landmark-us-supreme-court-cases-2019-8#brown-v-board-of-education-1954-14">Brown v. Board of Education.</a>While most American students understand the case be a seminal decision in the advancement of civil rights, King noted the decision had some negative repercussions on Black schools and teachers that have been seldom discussed."What happened was, white people defined inclusion and integration as Black people integrating into white schools. They didn't integrate into Black schools, so therefore Black teachers and administrators lost their jobs," he said.It's a microcosm about how even the Civil Rights movement has been taught within the framework of the country's white majority, and not always how it's affected the Black minority. Learning only the good things about Brown v. Board of Education feeds the narrative that Black schools were underdeveloped and Black students could only receive a good education by attending white schools, King said.<h2>There is no perfect way to teach Black history, but educators need to approach it with an open mind</h2><div type="image" title="Invest in the students" height="1402" width="2000" msid="76663951" hostid="261"></div>Black history is a massive subject, and not all educators agree on exactly how it should be taught. Before teachers begin to form lesson plans, King suggests educators first recognize they need to learn what Black history is, and then work to implement Black perspectives into the wider teaching of American history.King explained that its important to balance the difficult reality of white supremacy, slavery, and systemic oppression with Black agency and the way that Black Americans have continuously fought for their rights and persevered.Similarly, King said learning about Black joy and love, and the ability for Black communities to stand together is an important way to focus on humanity within Black history."Black joy just raises the human side of Black people. Because sometimes in our curriculum we always focus on suffering, and we don't focus on Black people being human," he said.<div type="image" title="black history education schools" height="1655" width="2500" msid="76663955" hostid="261"></div>One way to ensure Black history is being implemented into schools in a thoughtful manner is through discussions between administrators, community educators, parents, and university personnel, King suggested."All of these different people need to come together and design a plan," he said. "I believe those are the things that we need to do initially, to get us there. And then after that, we need to help educate our teachers through professional development."<h2>The Black Lives Matter movement has increased interest in Black history, but sustained momentum is key</h2>In many ways, <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-lives-matter-protests-aerial-footage-photos-2020-6">widespread Black Lives Matter protests</a> and the recent increase in social media exposure has created an environment where people "no longer have an excuse" to not educate themselves on Black history, King said."The beautiful thing about social media is that it has connected us with people all over the world. It gives people the opportunity to learn things that they may not have learned," he said."The great majority of people stop learning history in high school, and having a social media presence for people to share Black history websites and teaching Black history through threads on Twitter and sharing through Facebook and Instagram are very positive ways to help people understand history, and begin the knowledge process."<div type="image" title="black lives matter" height="2964" width="4446" msid="76663957" hostid="261"></div>But that being said, the US has still a long way to go to implement Black history into schools. Though King expressed optimism an uptick in conversations and activism, he said he's not "holding his breath.""I'm hopeful, but I'm trying to be as reserved as possible to see how everything is going," he said. "Will school districts provide the money for special development? Will they take time to really develop a good Black history curriculum? Will they provide accountability for those teachers who are teaching particular classes?"A step in the right direction, however, would be an increase in professional development and engagement with teachers. If more educators become knowledgeable on the subject of Black history, the school system could start to change."Professional development can't just be one day and then we're through. It has to be constant," King said.
