<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>British luxury brand<a href="http://www.investegate.co.uk/mulberry-group-plc--mul-/rns/preliminary-results/201506110700148346P/"> Mulberry reported a 9% drop in total revenue to £148.7 million ($230.2 million) for the year ending March 31</a>, from £163.5 million ($253.1 million) in the previous period.</p><p>This may seem pretty diabolical for a luxury brand right now but actually the group identified that there was a problem with revenue during 2014 and <a href="http://www.investegate.co.uk/mulberry-group-plc--mul-/rns/preliminary-results/201506110700148346P/">made a massive change to its products to boost retail sales</a> - it made sure all its handbags fell within a specific price range.</p><p><span>"I am pleased that the strategy we approved as a Board last year is beginning to bear fruit," said Thierry Andretta, CEO of Mulberry in a statement."We are committed to strengthening our position in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> whilst continuing to pursue our international growth strategy. We are focused upon translating the luxury values and Britishness of the Mulberry brand to a global audience."</span></p><p>Basically, Mulberry found that by making sure its handbags fell within a <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">£500-£1,000 ($775-$1548) price range, more people would buy the products. In fact, a</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">s a result of the changes made, bags within this price range for the Spring /Summer 2015 collection represented 66% of the assortment. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This is compared to 45% for Spring/Summer 2014.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This is a big deal because leather goods account for 90% of Mulberry's revenue and, as expected by the company, w<span>holesale sales were down 29% to £38.8 million ($60 million), so it needs to boost sales from retail - the people going into shops and buying products off the shelves.</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"T</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">he recent improvement in sales momentum suggests that this is a successful strategy," said the group.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Retail sales rose by 1% in £109.9 million ($170 million) for the year. In the first half of the year, retail sales fell by 9% but then picked up by 9% in the second half due to the pricing strategy.</span></p><p>"We have seen a positive uplift in sales since November as a result of the actions we took at the beginning of the year," said Godfrey Davis, Chairman of Mulberry in a statement. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"We have focused on creating desirable new products across the entire Mulberry range whilst continuing to invest for the longer term. Mulberry just found the perfect pricing formula that's turning its sales around

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The war in <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword> has had a wide-ranging impact on food and <keyword id="11917806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="energy" source="Orion">energy</keyword> supplies.</li><li>Western countries are being forced to reckon with their reliance on Russian imports.</li></ul><p>In the months since <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> ordered troops into Ukraine, a flurry of <keyword id="12754126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sanctions" source="Orion">sanctions</keyword> issued by Western countries has failed to curb <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-spy-chief-warns-putin-is-preparing-prolonged-war-ukraine-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">the military assault</a>. </p><p>With a drawn-out conflict appearing more likely, the political determination to punish President Vladimir Putin's nation suggests a prolonged period of sanctions lies ahead. Some experts say that the prospect of continued disruption to food and energy supplies as a result of the war will trigger a search for long-term alternatives to Russian imports.</p><p>While the price shock of the conflict is felt globally, the disruption to energy supplies is most keenly felt in the <keyword id="11907394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="european-union" source="Orion">European Union</keyword> (EU), which sources <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=EU_imports_of_energy_products_-_recent_developments#Overview">a quarter of its oil imports</a> and 40% of its <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/infographs/energy/bloc-2c.html">natural gas</a> from Russia (the US, by comparison, got about 3% of its crude oil from Russia in 2021). </p><p>In its sixth round of sanctions against Moscow, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-serhiy-marchenko-calls-for-immediate-energy-embargo-russia-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">EU announced plans</a> for a total ban on Russian oil and refined product imports by the end of the year.</p><p>"Let us be clear: it will not be easy," European Union President Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech outlining the proposals. "Some member states are strongly dependent on Russian oil. But we simply have to work on it." </p><p>While shifting away from Russian oil may prove difficult, Europe's reliance on Russian natural gas provides policymakers and central bankers with a much bigger headache. In a recent round of sanctions, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/european-union-coal-ban-russia-oil-natural-gas-ukraine-war-2022-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">EU continued to exclude</a> any embargo on natural gas, although it has aired proposals to cut demand for Russian imports by two-thirds by the end of 2022. </p><p>The EU's plan to wean itself off Russian imports is going to have profoundly negative implications on energy prices, according to David Claridge, CEO of security intelligence firm <a href="https://www.dragonflyintelligence.com/">Dragonfly</a>.</p><p>The EU has invested billions of euros in pipeline projects to service its demand, and seeking alternatives will be time-consuming and costly.  If European countries follow through with diversification away from Russian fossil fuels – be it through finding an alternative supply or adopting new means of energy such as renewables – they won't return, he said.</p><p>Claridge added: "If and when European nations can move away from Russian fossil fuels, they will look toward a more sustainable energy mix in order to meet simultaneous climate change objectives. So in that respect, they won't return to buy Russian oil and gas – that is long term."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-natural-gas-energy-eu-africa-european-union-commission-import-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Europe is mulling</a> Africa as a potential future source of gas but lacks the infrastructure to pipe it between the continents. Meanwhile, liquefied natural gas imports from other nations are limited in their potential to help make up the current shortfall.</p><p>Benjamin Maltby, a partner at Keystone Law and an expert in yacht and luxury asset law, said: "In practical terms, switching to a new source of gas supply is neither overly difficult nor complex, given that gas can be carried by liquefied natural gas ships. But the supply of such vessels is limited, as are alternative sources of gas."</p><p>That leaves the bloc without a quick fix and, while it might sponsor a more rapid shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources, it suggests that countries will have to absorb a higher price environment for some time to come.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.economicsobservatory.com/how-is-the-war-in-ukraine-affecting-global-food-security">Economics Observatory</a>, Ukraine is the world's largest producer of sunflower oil, and combined with Russia, it is responsible for more than half of global exports of sunflower oil. Russia, however, is the world's largest exporter of wheat, accounting for 36% of exports. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millions-tons-grain-blocked-ukraines-ports-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">A UN official warned</a> in early May that millions of tons of grain are stuck in Ukraine as the ongoing conflict with Russia prevents safe transit from the country's ports.</p><p>Martin Frick, the Germany director of the UN World Food Programme, told German news agency DPA: "Ukraine's food is urgently needed in the world," adding that Ukrainian shipments were critical to help tackle a "global food crisis."</p><p>While the heavy investment required to source new supplies suggests that any development of new supply channels could ensure a long-term shift away from Russian natural gas, trade in oil, refined products, and agricultural goods could be more fluid. But any reversion to previous trade routes would almost certainly depend on peace in Ukraine and personnel in the Kremlin.</p><p>"The second and more short- to medium-term consideration is tied to the conclusion of the war and the fate of Putin," Claridge said.</p><p>"I cannot see it being politically acceptable, or strategically sensible, to move in the direction of resumption of the same imbalanced energy relationship," he added, but also noted that trade choices may not be determined solely by Western governments. </p><p>"In any case, as we can see from current developments with Bulgaria and others, Russia may also refuse to supply, either because of currency issues arising from its financial isolation or to weaponize European dependence on its energy," he said.</p><div type="image" title="Red paint appears on the wall of the Russian embassy in London, UK." height="1397" width="1863" msid="91580553" hostid="261"></div><p>Maltby said one unintended consequence could be a curtailment of globalization and a possible consolidation of the Russo-Chinese axis of autocracy. Russia and China are now closer than before: they reject the postwar economic and political order that the US and allies created, they want to regain territories they believe were separated unjustly from their homelands, and they see democracy as a threat.</p><p>He added: "All other things being equal, this will limit the scope for economies within and without such axis from specializing in what their constituent businesses excel in."</p><p>According to Maltby, now more than ever, businesses must plan for the possibility and consequences of the imposition of sanctions, and the impact on supply chains.</p><p>This means that both businesses and governments would need to plan ahead, adapting plans and policies according to sanctions. </p><p>Maltby added: "It is imperative that manufacturers not only look for alternative sources of raw materials and components but manage their customer's expectations and ensure that their sales contracts allow for non or late delivery of goods."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="caption">JD Claridge and Charles Manning pitch xCraft to the investors in season 7 of </p></div><p></p></div></div>The business partners behind the <a href="http://xcraft.io/">xCraft</a> drone company out of Idaho have the ideal "Shark Tank" appearance in episode 5 of season 7.</p><p>Founder, president, and CEO JD Claridge and board member Charles Manning step into the Tank seeking $500,000 for 20% equity and walk out with $1.5 million for 25% and Mark Cuban, Daymond John, Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner, and Robert Herjavec as investors.</p><p>Claridge, an aerospace engineer, founded xCraft in 2014 and recruited Manning, CEO of mobile analytics firm Kochava, to help him build the business-end of the company, <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2015/10/21/xcraft-drone-company-scores-a-payday-on-shark-tank/">VentureBeat reports</a>.</p><p>Claridge and Manning impressed the Sharks with a video demonstration of the X PlusOne drone, which can be programmed to follow a flight plan, takes off and lands vertically, can climb to 10,000 feet, and can shift into "airplane mode," where it can fly at 60 mph.</p><p>Each X PlusOne costs $400 to make and retails for $1,800.</p><p>They launched a <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/137596013/x-plusone-your-ultimate-hover-speed-aerial-camera">Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign</a> for it last December and raised $143,000, locking down an additional $30,000 in sales on their website.</p><p>The guys also showed the Sharks a product still in development, the Phone Drone, a device that turns a smartphone into a drone. As Claridge explains, the expensive components of a drone - sensors, GPS, a camera - are already in the phone, and so they can keep production costs below $100 and retail it for around $300.</p><p>Because of its high price point and the legal restriction of being unable to recreationally fly a drone above 400 feet, the X Plus One is more suited to either enthusiasts or consumers using it for a professional purpose, such as landscaping. The Phone Drone can be a product for a more casual drone fan, who may want to use it on runs or climbs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>xCraft</span></p><p class="caption">The X Plus One switches from hover mode to airplane mode.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Herjavec asks Claridge and Manning to explain what their "secret sauce" is that makes them worthy of an investment over any other drone company.</p><p>Manning says that it's the intellectual property of the designs, and that the patent pending on the Phone Drone will make it a completely unique product.</p><p>John then asks the business partners why they went on the show. <a href="http://www.inquisitr.com/2516054/shark-tank-xcraft-drones-show-new-generation-of-technology-with-x-plus-one/">In an interview with local Idaho station KXLY</a> that took place several months after their pitch, Claridge and Manning explain that a "Shark Tank" producer had sought them out, and they were excited to audition for a chance in the Tank. Back in the Tank itself, Claridge tells the investors that they would use $250,000 for inventory and $250,000 to finish the Phone Drone, under the guidance of a Shark.</p><p>"I think you need more money," O'Leary says, and then offers $750,000 for 25%, an uncharacteristically straightforward and generous deal for "Mr. Wonderful."</p><p>"You know what I smell?" John asks. "I smell a nasty, nasty Shark fight that's about to happen."</p><p>Here's how the bidding war goes down:</p><ul><li><strong>Daymond John:</strong> $1 million for 25%.</li><li><strong>Kevin O'Leary:</strong> $1 million for 25%, with the benefit of someone who's been deeply researching the drone industry lately.</li><li><strong>Lori Greiner:</strong> $1 million for 20%.</li><li><strong>O'Leary:</strong> $1 million for 20%.</li><li><strong>Robert Herjavec:</strong> Also interested. Maybe we can work out a group deal.</li><li><strong>John:</strong> Let's do it among the four of us. A "big moneybag vulture" - Cuban - is waiting for us to offer a deal before he bests it and seals a deal.</li><li><strong>Manning:</strong> We thought about a situation like this and decided we'd love to have all five of you invest as a syndicate.</li><li><strong>John, O'Leary, Herjavec, Greiner:</strong> We're in. What's your offer?</li><li><strong>Claridge:</strong> Invest at a valuation of $10 million.</li><li><strong>John:</strong> Up from a valuation of $2 million? "I smell greedy people now." I'm setting a ceiling at a $6 million valuation.</li><li><strong>O'Leary:</strong> I'm setting a ceiling at 5% equity per investor.</li><li><strong>Mark Cuban:</strong> I might be interested, but won't confirm until I hear their final offer.</li></ul><p>After having a private discussion in the hallway leading into the Tank, Claridge and Manning return to ask for $1.5 million for 25% equity, in which the five investors each invest $300,000 for 5% equity. The deal takes into account both John's and O'Leary's ceilings, giving the company a valuation of $6 million.</p><p>Cuban, who has been quiet during the entire deal-making process, has said in many interviews and past "Shark Tank" episodes that he is always skeptical of entrepreneurs' true intentions for appearing on the show. That they're pushing to invest with all five Sharks shows they're willing to make a deal rather than just seek publicity, but Cuban still wants to know if they're legitimate before he joins the group excitement of the other four Sharks.</p><p>"You guys are smart," he says. "Did anyone else offer you money before this?"</p><p>Manning explains that yes, they have, but a traditional venture capital seed round doesn't really interest them. They're excited by the opportunity to have the unique operational expertise of the Sharks.</p><p>"I deal with a lot of VCs, like we all do," Herjavec says. "They're super smart. But they don't get their hands dirty like we do." He believes Claridge and Manning, and O'Leary does, too. They communicate to Cuban that he shouldn't worry.</p><p>"That works," Cuban says, smiling.
