A ‘nightmare’ sculpture of a hand atop a Wellington gallery is going viral on Twitter

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Banksy said his new exhibition is in Glasgow because of its iconic Duke of Wellington statue.</li><li>Glaswegians have been placing cones on the statue's head for the past 40 years.</li></ul><p>The artist Banksy recently announced his first solo exhibition in 14 years is being held in <a href="https://www.insider.com/scotland-travel-mistakes-american-tourists-make-to-avoid-2022-7">my home city of Glasgow, Scotland</a>. </p><p>The exhibition, titled <a href="https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/event/2/banksy-cut-and-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Cut and Run,"</a> opened on Sunday and will take place until August 28 at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA). </p><p>The reason Banksy chose Glasgow is pretty simple: He adores the iconic Duke of Wellington statue that stands outside GoMA just as much as us locals do.</p><p>The statue of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington and former prime minister of the UK, was erected in 1844, according to <a href="https://www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/scots-monuments-glasgow-duke-of-wellington-statue-1557896" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Scotsman</a>. But the reason the statue is so famous isn't about Wellesley at all; it's all thanks to the rebellious sense of humor of Glaswegians, who have been placing a cone on top of the statue's head for the past 40 years. </p><div type="image" title="duke of wellington glasgow" height="1512" width="2016" msid="101141662" hostid="261" sizebytes="321374"></div><p>In a sign welcoming guests to his new exhibit, Banksy said the statue is his "favorite work of art in the UK" because of the cone, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-65914456" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC News reports.</a></p><p>"Despite the best efforts of the council and the police, every time one is removed another takes its place," he said, the publication added.</p><h2>I can confirm that the statue is iconic and beloved by Glaswegians</h2><p>As someone who was born and raised in Glasgow, the Duke of Wellington statue — which I've always simply referred to as "the cone statue" — has been a constant in my life. </p><p>I can't remember a time when the statue didn't have its cone, and throughout the years, Glaswegians have found new and hilarious ways to reinvent our favorite landmark. At Christmastime, it's not uncommon for men dressed as Santa Claus to climb on the statue for a photo-op, as <a href="https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/homenews/19800318.santa-claus-mounts-glasgows-duke-wellington-statue/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Herald</a> reported in 2021.</p><p>The statue is seen as a symbol of the city, and you are unlikely to enter a tourist or art shop without seeing a postcard, coaster, fridge magnet, or painting without the statue on it. There is even a <a href="https://www.citycentremuraltrail.co.uk/murals/muralabout/52" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mural in the city</a> with a caricatured version of the statue alongside the phrase "Are you Dancin?" in reference to Scotland's <a href="https://www.insider.com/scottish-traditions-i-grew-up-with-that-americans-find-surprising-2022-1">famous ceilidh dancing</a>. </p><div type="image" title="glasgow mural" height="1512" width="2016" msid="101141663" hostid="261" sizebytes="542980"></div><p>And the landmark can hold a lot of meaning to those who no longer live in the city. </p><p>Ashton Burger, an American who spent an exchange semester in Glasgow in the spring of 2018, told me she got a tattoo of the cone when she returned to Scotland for a vacation earlier this year.</p><p>Burger said she studied abroad at the University of Strathclyde after a difficult period in her life — her father had passed away in June 2017. She said her semester in Glasgow "could not have come at a better time," and she met some of her best friends in the city.</p><div type="image" title="ashton cone tattoo" height="2274" width="3024" msid="101141664" hostid="261" sizebytes="280722"></div><p>"I knew I wanted to get a tattoo representing Glasgow while actually in the city. The traffic cone was the perfect idea," she said.</p><p>"It's so specifically Glasgow and it's absolutely one of my favorite things about the city. I look at my tattoo and am immediately reminded of how much Glasgow means to me and how much my experience there helped me when I most needed it," she added.</p><p>Burger's story reminded me that the cone is more than just a fun punch line. For some, it's a symbol of how special Glasgow is to them. And it reminds me how proud I am to be from this city.</p><p>I can only hope the Banksy exhibition will inspire more people to visit and learn about Glasgow.</p>

We visited Edinburgh but spent most of our time in Glasgow.</li><li>We loved how friendly the people were there and there was so much to do.</li></ul><p>Sure, Edinburgh has the castle atop the Royal Mile, but the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-tourist-shares-why-you-should-book-flight-to-glasgow-2023-10">often-overlooked Glasgow</a> is just as fun, less crowded, equally beautiful, and offers plenty to do for families.</p><p>My family has dual citizenship in the US and UK, and we <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scotland-vs-us-family-travel-2024-9">recently returned to Scotland</a> for the first time in six years. On our recent trip back, we visited Edinburgh but spent most of our time in Glasgow, which we prefer (though I may be a little biased, as I married a Glaswegian). Here's why.</p><h2 id="a5a7c185-998f-4f01-a393-d994d15b3f2a">Glasgow offers unique family attractions</h2><p>Edinburgh has tons of tourist attractions, but Glasgow has its own set of treasures. Families can navigate the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-what-its-like-to-visit-glasgow-scotland-mural-trail-2023-6">Glasgow mural trail</a> to spot stunning street art, visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, known for its unique floating heads installation in the atrium, or explore the Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel.</p><p>There are also so many parks and playgrounds, and while I love perusing Scotland's best shopping streets, my little one loved the carnival-style rides at the nearby St. Enoch Center.</p><p>Our favorite family adventure this year was hopping on the Waverly (the world's last seagoing paddle steamer) from the Glasgow Science Center as it voyaged down the River Clyde into the Firth of Clyde. The boat was every bit as gorgeous as the Scottish scenery.</p><div type="image" title="Nicole Findlay and her family standing on Calton Hill." height="480" width="640" msid="113366485" hostid="261" sizebytes="73672"></div><h2 id="3eb995d8-6ef9-4d6f-bc73-286e29795015">Glasgow is beautiful, too</h2><p>Edinburgh is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visit-scotland-mistakes-tourists-make-glasgow-2023-10">Glasgow is just as beautiful</a>, but you need to know where to go.</p><p>Buchanan Street, flanked by pretty Victorian and Edwardian buildings, is the perfect pedestrian promenade for shoppers. Ashton Lane in the West End is our favorite evening spot. It's a cute, cobble-stoned alley with a twinkly-lit ceiling surrounded by restaurants, pubs, and a small movie theater.</p><p>The Glasgow Cathedral, with its signature spires and iconic green roof, is impressive no matter how many times you've seen it. The nearby Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery with fantastic views of the city from its summit.</p><p>Pollok Country Park in Glasgow's Southside is the city's largest park and probably the most beautiful. At the same time, a tranquil stroll along the River Kelvin Walkway in the West End is a picturesque woodland escape for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-camping-better-than-traditional-vacations-travel-tips-2024-3">adventure-loving families</a>.</p><p>Glasgow University is another worthwhile attraction. With its Gothic-revival-style architecture, Harry Potter fans will feel like they're stepping into Hogwarts.</p><div type="image" title="Nicole Findlay's husband and son sitting atop the National Monument of Scotland." height="480" width="640" msid="113366486" hostid="261" sizebytes="33944"></div><h2 id="61baf6d8-9dd2-4468-a4e2-d44a2428ab5d">Glasgow is cheaper than Edinburgh</h2><p>Glasgow offers cheaper accommodations and more affordable food options. We stayed at hotels in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with the former being substantially cheaper.</p><p>And while there are plenty of amazing, award-winning restaurants in Glasgow, the city is also the Gregg's capital of the UK, which is a cheap and cheerful bakery chain known for their flaky, savory pastries and sweet treats. We found ourselves there for morning coffee and bacon rolls more times than we'd like to admit.</p><p>If you're on a budget, Glasgow is the clear winner.</p><h2 id="5b7084df-f131-4858-a390-4ddd70828ede">It's hard to beat a football match in Glasgow</h2><p>Two Glasgow teams, Celtic and Rangers, are the most successful (and popular) soccer teams in Scotland. Book tickets in advance to catch a game at either Parkhead or Ibrox. The players on the pitch will undoubtedly entertain, but the supporters will provide an experience your family will never forget.</p><h2 id="37be8256-6720-4d1f-9071-0430b270f3b3">Glasgow is friendly, less crowded, and not as touristy</h2><p>After a crowdsourced campaign in 2013 consulted thousands of people, "People Make Glasgow" became the official city brand slogan. Strangers in Glasgow don't really feel like strangers for long.</p><p>Glasgow is also known for its humor, perfectly illustrated by the city's Duke of Wellington statue. For over 40 years, this iconic figure has sported an orange traffic cone on its head. I got such a kick out of it as a kid, and now my son does, too.</p><p>And while Edinburgh is a smaller city, it attracts more tourists than Glasgow. In Edinburgh, we dodged the crowds as we walked up and down the Royal Mile and around other tourist hot spots. Glasgow was a breath of fresh air and easier to explore with a kid.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>When I was married to my kids' dad, his work was not flexible, but mine was, so I took them on trips solo. </li><li>Now I have remarried and have four kids between the ages of 7 and 17. </li></ul><p>My daughters were 3 and 7 the first time <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/parenting/travel-toys-for-toddlers">I traveled alone with them</a>. As I loaded our bags into the back of the car and headed for the airport, I wondered if I was making a big mistake. Their dad was very hands-on and helped a lot in those early parenting days, and here I was, heading off on a weeklong trip with two small children without him. What was I thinking? </p><p>We live in a small town of around 10,000 people, and although it's a great place to raise kids, it's a stark contrast from my own upbringing in the city, where we regularly visited museums and art galleries, went to plays, and spent weekends ice-skating or picnicking in wildlife parks and zoos.   </p><p>I didn't want my kids to miss out on those experiences <a href="https://www.insider.com/traveled-to-spain-with-kids-pros-and-cons-2023-8">only cities can offer.</a> I started to get the travel bug. My work is flexible, but my now ex-husband's wasn't. If I wanted to <a href="https://www.insider.com/worlds-most-scenic-road-great-coast-new-zealand-photos-2023-1">take the girls traveling</a>, I was going to have to do it alone.  </p><h2>I did a lot of planning</h2><p>Planning is the key to making travel with young kids enjoyable. My first step was figuring out how to board a plane with three people's luggage. The best decision I made was to buy the girls their own carry-on bags.</p><p>I found inexpensive, wheeled suitcases with handles: big enough to fit all their clothes but small enough for my 3-year-old to pull behind her. I also packed a small day bag with snacks, drink bottles, baby wipes, bandages, sun hats, sunscreen, and a soft toy for each child.</p><h2>I talked about what we were doing</h2><p>Kids like to know what's happening — especially when they're out of their usual routine — so before the trip, I created a schedule for each day. Vacations with their dad were often busy and spontaneous. He liked to pack the day full of activities and had a ton of energy to deal with any mishaps. But I knew that wouldn't work for me alone with the girls.</p><p>Our schedule involved just one activity in the morning and one in the afternoon. There's only so far a 3-year-old can walk without tantrums, so I also planned exactly which bus, train, tram, and taxi we'd be catching each day to and from our accommodation. </p><p>For our first trip, I'd picked Wellington, a city I was familiar with. We visited a space observatory and museum, then picnicked and played at the park in the beautiful gardens nearby. The best thing about planning your trip well, other than less grumpy, tired kids, is you can research and book events and shows in advance. After the park, we took a tram ride down into the city to see a kid's show I'd booked weeks earlier — something we probably would have missed out on with our more spontaneous vacations. </p><p>With just the three of us, I could travel at the girl's speed. If they loved something, we could stay longer. If they were tired, we could head back to our accommodation and have a rest. We spent an entire day in a huge six-floor interactive museum called Te Papa, and after six hours, the girls still didn't want to leave. The whole trip went smoothly, and we loved it.  </p><h2>Even with a blended family, traveling solo with my kids is better</h2><p>It's been 10 years since our first solo trip, and we've had plenty since then. Now that I'm remarried, and we have a blended family with four kids aged 7 to 17, traveling separately works even better. It's impossible to please everyone.</p><p>The youngest wants to go to the zoo; the 11-year-old wants to see a vintage car museum; the teens want to shop and visit art galleries. Vacations with various combinations of parents and children means we can all do what we want.</p><p>In a few weeks, my teen girls and I are heading off on our own again for a couple of nights. We've booked a show and plan to go <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-york-city-seasonal-ice-skating-rinks-ranked-2021-12">ice skating</a>. We love our girl's weekends and look forward to many, many more. </p>
