If you think <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>’s prolonged search for the next <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> is getting a bit nutty, especially with a disgruntled <keyword id="62333" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Steve-Ballmer">Steve Ballmer</keyword> waiting on the sidelines to hand over the mantle, you are not far from the truth. But then, that is the actual state of the coveted C-Suite nowadays – volatile is the right word if you want to sum it up. There is no job security at the top and even the best performer for years can get redundant within the span of a few weeks. The issues could be many – right from <keyword id="646347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="poor-performance">poor performance</keyword> to <keyword id="610960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="business-restructuring">business restructuring</keyword> to alleged <keyword id="6375736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="corruption-charges">corruption charges</keyword>. But the biggest factor is relevance, a perfect future-fit that can take companies ahead, according to <keyword id="67736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Industry-experts">industry experts</keyword>. In a difficult <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, companies are compelled to twist and turn to keep track of profitability and their requirements change accordingly. Hence, their leaders have to adapt, shape up or ship out, as the case might be. 
 India is no exception and business leaders across the country have been frequently ‘released’ by industry giants. Many of them leave with ‘immediate effect’ while others are on garden leave or worse still, waiting for their predecessors to turn up (just like Ballmer). Yet, most of the C-Suite executives are tight-lipped about their departures, at least here in India. We are yet to come across an announcement like the one made by <keyword id="384914" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Groupon">Groupon</keyword>’s founder and former CEO <keyword id="488139" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Andrew-Mason">Andrew Mason</keyword>. But exit happens all the same – be it discreet or blatant. Here’s a quick look at some of the top-notch C-Suite executives from India who parted ways with their respective companies in 2013, their official exit lines and what happened behind the scene.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Executives at Davos weighed in on the likelihood and severity of a recession in 2023. </li><li>Most expect the US to have a shallow recession, but Europe and elsewhere could be hit harder.</li></ul>Executives gathered at Davos this week, with the most turbulent economic period since the global financial crisis near the top of their agendas.Insider spoke with C-suite members from groups including McKinsey, KPMG, EY, and Cisco about their outlook for the economy in 2023, and how it might affect the labor market and their businesses. <h2>Tracy Francis, McKinsey chief marketing officer</h2>"The scenario is complicated. We have an energy crisis, we have inflation, we have the specter of decoupling … but I think one of the things we are talking to clients a lot about is not talking ourselves into a recession. "An event like this has such a power to influence the level of optimism or otherwise that is out there. While we don't want to be Pollyanna about macro-economic trends, I do think there is bright sports around the world. India, Indonesia, all those kind of things that are going on that we are encouraging clients to think about, and like I said not talking ourselves into a recession."<h2>Paul Knopp, KPMG CEO</h2>"The potential recession that might occur is largely central bank-induced. I think what's really going to be worth watching is how quickly will they turn, because a central-bank-induced recession in theory would be more easily unwound than a recession that is due to fundamental things that are wrong with society and the economy."My personal view is I think that if we have a recession in the US, that there's a really good chance that could be very short and shallow. If there is one, the global picture is more complicated."<h2>Rima Qureshi, Verizon chief strategy officer</h2>"I think regardless of whether it is a recession, whether we are dealing with the inflation and how long it lasts, I think there will be a long period of uncertainty, whether it be geopolitical, economic, environmental. I think there's going to be a lot of uncertainty. "And that means it's time to really think about hunkering down and focusing on what's important, and really focusing on the fundamentals, which is what we are doing within the company."<h2>Fran Katsoudas, Cisco chief people, policy, and purpose officer</h2>"Some of the layoffs are more about cutting costs. And we've heard companies talk about the fact that perhaps during the pandemic, they over-hired. And so those layoffs are absolutely related to economic stability and growth."You have other layoffs that are actually about the transformation of companies. And I think in that situation, it is more of a skills discussion, and how do we ensure that we have what we need, as we move forward?"<h2>Andy Baldwin, EY global managing partner </h2>"The consensus view is that we appear to be moving into a recession. But I think it's important to qualify that … I think this recession is asymmetric. So yeah, we've got clearly parts of the world that are growing strongly and I think are going to continue to grow strongly, even when of the possible future recession."My own personal view is, I think we will likely see a technical recession, two quarters of negative GDP effectively, in parts of the world, most likely Europe, perhaps the US, but it doesn't feel like this is going to be a severe recession."<h2>Peggy Johnson, Magic Leap CEO </h2>"I think the economy will sustain at the level that it's at now. I don't know that it's going to get much worse, but I don't know that it's going to get much better into 2023. That's kind of my feeling."<h2>Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera CEO</h2>"If you just read our earnings announcement and look at our results, we have seen a slowdown that occurred during 2022. Will that get worse or will that get better in 2023? We're not really super positive. Our business's three segments, historically, have been counter-cyclical."When unemployment goes up, people will get a degree because they want to be more qualified to get a more scarce job. When unemployment goes down, people are like 'I don't want to get a degree, I want to make some money'. So I think that segment will be counter-cyclical. We will do better if there's a recession – at least if there's a recession with unemployment."<h2>Becky Frankiewicz, ManpowerGroup president </h2>"There's a lot more optimism now, particularly in the labor market. So you saw the eurozone unemployment reached a historical low, the US labor market is on a 50-year low for unemployment. And so the labor markets are defying the odds of economic principles. "No one's predicting a super robust economy, but more 1% GDP growth versus negative one or 2%. And I think the labor market will probably have a very shallow impact. I think there will be impact more than we're seeing now. But I think it'll be a shallow impact."

Here's what top executives at Davos are saying about a recession. Many can see silver linings.

<ul><li>Google has announced that its shutting down its <keyword id="2075203" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="free-wifi">free WiFi</keyword> project with <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> – <keyword id="3693414" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-station">Google Station</keyword>. </li><li>After India, the project was also launched in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico among others. </li><li>But as data has gotten too cheap in India, Google finds the project not sustainable.</li></ul>Google Station – Google’s project in partnership with Indian railways which provided free wifi in stations across India, has come to a halt. In an official blog, Google said that it is no more scalable and sustainable. In 2015, Google had launched Station with much fanfare, taking the excitement of free data to a whole new level. But with the entrant of new players like Jio, who have made data easily available and cheap in India, the thrill is lost. “It’s clear that since we started five years ago, getting online has become much simpler and cheaper. Mobile data plans have become more affordable and mobile connectivity is improving globally,” Google wrote. Having launched in India, Google took this project to various other countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico among others. “The challenge of varying technical requirements and infrastructure among our partners across countries has also made it difficult for Station to scale and be sustainable, especially for our partners,” the company wrote in the blogpost. Google believes that it will be fruitful to put its time and effort in building products for the next billion users. There have been several initiatives across the country to provide free WiFi to users, over the years. Recently, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had announced a Free WiFi project in Delhi. In 2018, Kerala had rolled out a project with CISCO to make way for a thousand free WiFi spots across the state. Meanwhile, in 2017, Telangana government launched Hy-Fi, to set up WiFi spots across the capital city of Hyderabad. Google will stop providing free WiFi at railway stations⁠ because data in India is too cheap

Apps like Netflix, Zoom, Slack, and even Postmates rely on AWS to some degree or another to provide the server infrastructure that powers their services.Now, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is putting AWS under the ultimate stress test. As corporate America sends employees home to work remotely, they're using Zoom, Slack, Cisco's WebEx, and other AWS-hosted cloud software at unprecedented levels to do their jobs. And with many states forcing bars, movie theaters, concert venues, and sporting arenas to close, there's nowhere to go on the weekend, meaning an uptick in Netflix and Hulu binge-watching and "Fortnite" gaming.The good news is that AWS, as the first major cloud on the market, has plenty of experience in handling huge spikes in demand at massive scales - Amazon itself is hosted from AWS, and helps the retail operation stay speedy and effective on Black Friday and the following Cyber Monday. "It's highly automated and designed for failure," Dave Bartoletti, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, told Business Insider. "That means an application running on those platforms should be built to handle the loss of a server or the loss of a storage device or the loss of a network connection to be able to recover automatically from that failure. That's how cloud platforms have been built from the start."Still, America is buckling in for the long haul, as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/figures-show-us-soon-coronavirus-worse-china-2020-3">novel coronavirus continues to spread across the United States,</a> which in turn will place an ever-heavier burden on clouds like Amazon's to keep critical apps up and running as usage only increases.Here's how AWS keeps its cloud running, even during emergencies.<h2>How AWS's global infrastructure works</h2>Major clouds like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform have a structural advantage that helps a lot when it comes to reliability. Each platform is hosted from the respective tech titan's own hyper-efficient data centers, allowing customers to access processing power, storage, and other services for pennies or dollars per hour. If customers need more (or less) of anything, clouds like AWS make it easy to add even hundreds of thousands of servers to their infrastructure.AWS in particular has 22 regions - its name for the geographical areas where its data centers operate - around the world. One of those regions is dedicated to work with the federal government, while the rest are largely intended for local customers in each area or country. Each of those regions is broken down even further into what it calls availability zones - sets of one or more data centers that are connected to each other via fast, purpose-built networking. Customers can pay AWS to have their software hosted in multiple of the 69 total availability zones, either within the same region or across multiple regions.In plainer terms: The more availability zones a customer uses, the less likely it is that their app or service goes down. If one data center were struck with a fire or earthquake that shut it down, it would still be available from another availability zone and keep on trucking.AmazonAmazon's data center site in Oregon"Having all that extra bandwidth between regions lets it shift demand to another region or a zone without totally killing user experience or totally killing performance," Bartoletti said. "It's also the investment they made in those networks to double or triple their network load capacity."Amazon itself takes advantage of the availability zone model. The Amazon Aurora database product, one of its key challenges to Oracle, is actually hosted across availability zones that span the globe. That way, if there's an outage in one region, a secondary one can step up to the task."Its platform is already globally distributed around the world," Bartoletti said. "It's designed to scale. It's broken up into availability zones and regions that help reduce failure. If it fails, it should be localized as much as possible. They have the experience of many years in the market of handling spiky workloads."There's more to come as well, with 16 more availability zones and five more AWS Regions planned in Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Africa, and Spain.<h2>What happens during a pandemic?</h2>Already, AWS has systems in place to keep the data centers running and secure, even if there is an emergency. AWS says its infrastructure is monitored 24/7 to ensure that the data stored there is secure, and that the data flowing across its global network is automatically encrypted.These data center sites are highly protected by fencing, security guards, intrusion detection technology, and other measures. And within these sites, there's plenty of backup power equipment in case things go wrong.More relevant to the current situation, AWS has <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/data-center/controls/">updated its website</a> to say that it has pandemic response policies and procedures to respond to possible threats that result from a disease outbreak, such as COVID-19.Some of these strategies include changing its staffing model if needed, a crisis management plan to make sure business operations are still running in case of an emergency, and transferring critical operations to other regions if needed. These plans also discuss international health agencies and regulations. Around the world, more governments are instituting their own coronavirus-related lockdowns, restrictions, and mandates. But even if there were to be a lockdown at an AWS data center location, the site would most likely stay open - at least among its American data centers.That's because the Department of Homeland Security <a href="https://www.cisa.gov/critical-infrastructure-sectors">has identified 16</a> critical infrastructure sectors, which has served as a guideline for US states instituting shelter-in-place orders. Amazon's data centers would be considered critical, as it falls under the <a href="https://www.cisa.gov/information-technology-sector">information technology sector</a>. In other words, DHS recognizes the critical role that AWS plays in the internet economy. Bartoletti also notes that cloud data centers host key infrastructure that supports <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-microsoft-google-customers-industries-2020-3">other critical sectors</a>, like financial services and health care. He says that if anything, many of the functions at data centers can be automated. "What they do is rely on the automation on their platform," Bartoletti said. "It doesn't require people to do things to fix things manually because they've made an investment in automated systems."<h2>How else does AWS prepare for an emergency?</h2>Even before the pandemic, AWS says it routinely runs diagnostic tests on its machines, networks, and backup equipment to make sure they work properly and will continue to do so in an emergency. Meanwhile, people and automatic systems both monitor the temperature and humidity of the sites to prevent overheating and possible service outages. "There are spikes that happen throughout the year," Bartoletti said. "Also, they get stress tested in real time because AWS hosts thousands of the most broadly distributed applications, like Netflix. This is real-time stress testing."AWS also says it has a guide in place called the <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/data-center/controls/">AWS Business Continuity Plan</a>, which outlines detailed steps on what to do before, during, and after possible disruptions and natural disasters in order to avoid or decrease downtime. AWS tests this plan with drills that simulate different scenarios and then works on how it can improve its response. For example, its crisis response teams may run drills on what would happen if an entire facility goes down."Because they have a global network of regions, they can run various tests that have different impact zones," Bartoletti said. "We can look at the loss of one data center within a region or the loss of an entire region."Bartoletti says outside of coronavirus, one major risk would be a natural disaster hitting during the pandemic, such as an earthquake or a fire. AWS does have systems in place to prepare for environmental threats like natural disasters and fires, such as sensors that can detect water or fire, automatic pumps to remove water, and systems to notify employees of problems. However, it would still be a lot for AWS to juggle both crises simultaneously. "The biggest risk would be some kind of natural disaster that would impact a geographic area that's already under work from home restrictions," Bartoletti said.To make sure it can properly deal with these risks, AWS builds automated systems and hires third-parties to confirm that they're secure and compliant. "We are continuously innovating the design and systems of our data centers to protect them from man-made and natural risks," AWS says on its website.<h2>'Don't panic'</h2>Still, the cloud is not <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-amazon-microsoft-azure-google-cloud-coronavirus-risks-2020-3">immune to risks</a>, Bartoletti says. Right now, he says every business is facing uncertainty as it's not clear how long the pandemic will last. While some analysts have said AWS's business is "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-coronavirus-analysts-bull-case-bear-case-2020-3">recession-proof</a>," others have said that the "negative ripples" from the coronavirus pandemic could impact it negatively."Everybody needs as much visibility looking forward as they can to do proper capacity planning," Bartoletti said. "One risk overall is if it continues to get worse, meaning that we overwhelm capacity if too many places shut down at once. Nobody's capacity planning is perfect. It's the unknown about the progression of the disease."For companies, Bartoletti recommends knowing which cloud your software relies on and checking in regularly on updates from cloud providers. He also says to make sure to regularly track how you're using and spending resources on the cloud - that way, a sudden spike won't catch customers by surprise."I haven't seen anything in North America from cloud providers that they're concerned about their ability to handle compute and networking demands," Bartoletti said. "I don't think they're concerned about not being able to handle the demands."In general, he says "don't panic" about cloud capacity because AWS and other clouds have laid a "strong foundation" to handle increased loads."I think AWS is ready," Bartoletti said. "I believe the cloud providers are ready. They're ready for what's happened so far. Will they be ready for what will happen next? I believe so."Do you work at AWS or at its data center sites? The coronavirus crisis is putting Amazon's cloud to the test like never before. Here's how it keeps its massive data centers running smoothly, helping apps like Netflix and Zoom stay reliable.

Things have changed in recent years though. Technology has become less about whiz-bang gadgets and more about the Internet-powered apps and services we use. Twitter. Instagram. Snapchat. Dropbox. And so on. You don't really need 2 million square feet in the Las Vegas Convention Center to show off a bunch of apps.
Last year, Microsoft famously pulled out of CES, and it was the first time in recent memory that its CEO (either Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer) didn't deliver the opening keynote. Instead, we got a very <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/8/3850056/qualcomms-insane-ces-2013-keynote-pictures-tweets">bizarre presentation</a> from then-Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs that included a cameo by Big Bird and a lip syncing Adam Levine.
Also missing last year? We didn't get a single blockbuster product announcement from one of the major tech companies. Instead, companies like Samsung, HTC, and Nokia waited to hold <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-announcement-event-2013-3">their own events</a> to announce new flagship products later in the year.
So what did happen at CES last year if there weren't any big breakthrough products? There was still a lot going on. But one of the problems with CES in recent years is it hasn't been a good indicator of what the next year in tech would look like. In fact, most of the big themes of CES 2013 were either barely mentioned again following the show or turned out to be major duds.
Let's take a look back at some of the biggest themes of CES 2013 and see where we are now.
<h2>4K TVs</h2>
4K TVs, also known as Ultra HD TVs, were the biggest storyline of CES 2013. These sets represent the next evolution in picture quality because they have nearly double the amount of pixels as normal HD sets today. The downside? They're very expensive. 4K TVs can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Samsung just announced a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-110-inch-tv-2013-12">110-inch set that'll go for about $150,000</a>. Plus, you can't take advantage of a 4K TV set unless the video was shot at that resolution. Today, most content is still shot in normal HD.
Even though 4K TVs are a few years away from being affordable, every tech company from Samsung to Panasonic made a big push in the space at last year's CES. Sharp even one-upped its competitors with a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sharp-8k-tv-ces-2013-1">prototype 8K TV set</a>.
We'll probably see more of the same at this year's CES, but don't expect to have one of these sets in your home for another few years.
<h2>Smart TVs</h2>
As a piggyback to the whole 4K thing, many of the new sets introduced at CES last year were Internet-connected Smart TVs. That doesn't just mean they came with a bunch of built-in streaming apps like Netflix, Pandora, and HBO GO. They also had new interfaces and recommendation engines to help you find new stuff to watch.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-smart-tv-technology-2013-1">Samsung probably had the most advanced Smart TVs</a> with built in cameras and motion/voice controls. Still, you could tell it was the early days of such technology. It's clunky and not entirely accurate. TV may be ripe for disruption, but no one has nailed it yet.
That's not going to stop tech companies from trying again though. Samsung has already said it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-smart-tv-2013-12">plans to update its Smart TV line with new software improvements</a>. LG is reportedly going to show off a <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57616454-93/lgs-webos-tv-purportedly-pops-up-in-leaked-image/">TV powered by WebOS</a>, the mobile operating system Palm developed before HP bought the company. WebOS is now an open source operating system just like Google's Android, so it can run on just about any device.
<h2>Smart Appliances</h2>
From washing machines that send you a notification when your laundry is finished to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/smart-stuff-2013-1">refrigerators with built-in Evernote integration</a>, tech companies tried really hard to make "smart" everything happen last year.
While you probably didn't buy a smartfridge last year, these appliances did touch on a growing trend in tech called "The Internet of Things." That refers to connecting everyday objects like lights and thermostats to the Internet so they can operate more efficiently and let you have a deeper level of control. There are already a bunch of companies developing stuff in the space like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/smartthings-raises-12-million-2013-11">SmartThings</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/review-the-nest-thermostat-2013-11">Nest</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ciscos-john-chambers-has-found-a-new-14-trillion-market-2013-5">even Cisco</a>. Expect to see even more "smart" stuff at CES this year.
<h2>BlackBerry 10</h2>
While BlackBerry didn't have an official presence at CES 2013, it did show off its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-10-demo-photos-2013-1">new mobile operating system BlackBerry 10</a> to a bunch of journalists behind closed doors. At the time, BlackBerry 10 was just a few weeks from launch. It was the product that was supposed to save the company.
But the BlackBerry 10 hype was short-lived. BlackBerry had a tough time selling its new BB10-powered phones like the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10. Last fall, the company failed to go private in a $4.7 billion offer from private equity firm Fairfax Financial. Instead, its CEO Thorsten Heins resigned. Several other top executives have also left the company. BlackBerry is now run by an interim CEO named John S. Chen who plans to make a bigger push in enterprise and emerging markets like Indonesia. The BlackBerry we knew a year ago is all but dead.
<h2>Intel Mobile</h2>
Intel is a giant in traditional desktop computing, but has struggled in recent years to adapt to the smartphone/tablet revolution. At last year's CES, Intel spent a lot of time talking about the mobile processors it planned to put in cheaper smartphones in emerging markets. 
The problem? Intel's mobile chips weren't going to start shipping until the end of 2013, nearly a full year after they were announced. It's still unclear how many manufacturers chose those Intel chips over the more traditional ARM processors used in most mobile devices. And that's not a good sign. Traditional <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gartner-pc-sales-2013-7">PC sales are tanking</a>. While Intel makes really good processors for laptops and desktops, its mobile plans remain fuzzy. (However, there has been a bigger push lately in those two-in-one laptop/tablet hybrids running Windows 8.)
Intel's new CEO Brian Krzanich will give the opening <keyword id="1997485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="CES-2014">CES 2014</keyword> keynote on Monday night, so we're expecting to learn more about how Intel plans to tackle mobile.
<h2>Wearable Gadgets</h2>
If CES is supposed to be an indicator of what the next hot thing in tech is, then 2013's show almost completely missed the trend of wearable gadgets like Google's face-computer Google Glass, fitness trackers like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fitbit-force-review-2013-10">the FitBit Force</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/galaxy-gear-review-2013-10">smart watches like the Samsung Galaxy Gear</a>. One notable exception: the Pebble smart watch. Pebble began as Kickstarter project in 2012 and formally launched at CES in 2013. It's probably the best device in the category you can buy today, although the competition is pretty dim right now. 
Early CES 2014 rumors suggest that we'll see a ton of new wearables from companies like LG, Archos, and a bunch of hardware startups trying to make their name in the space. Expect wearables to be the big theme of this year's show. Still, don't be surprised if these gadgets are half-baked like Samsung's Galaxy Gear was. The space is still too young and we have yet to see a product that truly breaks through.
