A Twitter spokesperson revealed that Twitter would be laying off employees and halting work at one of its development centres in India's technology hub Bengaluru.<br />
<br />
"As part of our normal business review, we have decided to stop the global engineering work at the Bangalore development center. We thank the impacted individuals for their valuable contributions and are doing as much as we can to provide them a respectful exit from our company," the spokesperson said.<br />
<br />
The company spokesperson further said this move would only affect its global engineering workforce in Bengaluru but declined to disclose any specific details on the number of jobs being cut or how are they helping the affected employees.<br />
<br />
However, the layoffs are likely to impact less than 20 employees at the development centre, according to another source familiar with the matter. The affected employees were reportedly a part of ZipDial, an Indian mobile communications startup bought by Twitter last year.<br />

The move of sacking these employees comes a year after Twitter had announced plans of doubling down on its India operations in June last year, to build localised products suitable for markets with pervasive Internet connectivity issues. It had also stated that it would increase its employee strength to 50 employees.<br />

"To begin with, the India engineering centre will focus on three things -build product that are unique and distinct to Indian market, appeals to local traditions customs and interests. Second, to make sure our app performs in a world-class manner, regardless of internet connection, and finally, to make sure it's accessible regardless of the device people are using, language they speak, income or location," Oestlien had said at the time.<br />

Twitter, however, said it remained committed to India as a strategic market for users, partners and advertisers and would continue to maintain a presence in the city.<br />
<br />
The company's defense comes as damage mitigation as this move comes amid rumors of a Twitter takeover, after struggling with sluggish revenue growth and a stagnant user base for several quarters.<br />
<br />
In July, Twitter reported its slowest quarterly revenue growth since going public in 2013 and also provided a disappointing forecast. Earlier this week, a Twitter investor had also sued the microblogging giant over claims that they had misled investors on key growth metrics, including user base and user engagement.<br />

Twitter employees lose their jobs as company halts global engineering work

This will be Twitter’s first acquisition in India.<br />

Neither Twitter nor ZipDial have revealed the amount of money involved in the acquisition. But according to media reports, Twitter is likely to have spent $30-$40 million for the acquisition.<br />

For many, their first online experience will be on a mobile device – but the cost of data may prevent them from experiencing the true power of the Internet. ZipDial, which was set up in 2010, is a cloud-based mobile and analytics platform which allows companies to reach their target audience through ‘missed calls.’ In the last two years, ZipDial and Twitter have tied up for various campaigns like the Lok Sabha elections, Bollywood film promotions and @MTVIndia’s #RockTheVote ‘Dial the Hashtag’ campaign. <br />

“More than half of the world’s population live in emerging and newly developed markets, and these consumers use their mobile phones differently. We build for them. ZipDial’s innovative platform has already scaled across South Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa, where we operate. Two top Twitter execs just jumped ship

<p>On <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-tv-technical-performance-2017-2">Tuesday</a>, YouTube announced its own $35-a-month competitor to cable TV called YouTube TV, and the company thinks it has a secret weapon: its popularity with young people.</p><p>YouTube TV delivers a package of around 40 channels over the internet - to your smart TV, phone, computer - primarily based on deals with the big broadcast networks. There are some big programming holes, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-tv-channel-lineup-2017-2">which we explored here</a>, but YouTube says it's not trying to recreate the big cable bundle.</p><p>What YouTube is trying to do is convince young people to sign up for a pay TV package for the first time, not try and get older people to ditch their expensive cable packages. "This is TV reimagined for the YouTube generation," Christian Oestlien, the director of product management at YouTube, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-02-28/youtube-bets-it-can-convince-youngs-to-pay-for-tv">told Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>YouTube is well-suited to go after this market. In fact, YouTube is actually more popular with teens than cable TV, according to a survey <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-popular-for-teens-2016-10">in October</a> by Piper Jaffray (and only trails Netflix).</p><p><span>Piper Jaffray's last semi-annual <a href="http://www.piperjaffray.com/3col.aspx?id=4199&amp;forcerefresh=1">survey</a> of 10,000 US teens showed a whopping 26% of teens watched </span><span>YouTube every day, putting it over cable TV for the first (25%). YouTube thinks its new $35-a-month TV package has a secret weapon in the fight against cable

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Burnie Burns, one of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/burnie-burns-of-rooster-teeth-explains-how-to-sustain-youtube-viral-video-hit-2017-1">pioneers of digital video</a> and the cofounder of 250-person studio Rooster Teeth, is "overjoyed" by YouTube's new $35-a-month cable TV competitor. He thinks it's big for YouTube's top talent.</p><p>YouTube TV, which was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-tv-price-launch-date-2017-2">unveiled on Tuesday</a>, delivers around 40 TV channels to your smart TV, phone, laptop, and so on. It's the latest "skinny bundle" meant to appeal to people who want to dip their toes back into the world of pay TV, or get a premium package for the first time.</p><p>But while YouTube TV mostly tries to streamline the traditional TV package, Burns told Business Insider that it's also a big step forward for YouTube's most prominent creators.</p><p>YouTube TV will be a totally separate app from YouTube: It will include shows and movies from YouTube Red, the company's $9.99-a-month premium service, which houses YouTube-funded original content from the platform's heavyweights like AwesomenessTV, Lilly Singh, Joey Graceffa, The Fine Brothers, and so on.</p><p>That's a big deal, according to Burns, whose company Rooster Teeth has a movie "Lazer Team" on YouTube Red, with a sequel in production.</p><p>For Red, YouTube tapped its top talents and gave them the budgets to make premium shows and movies. On YouTube TV, that Red content will live alongside established channels like ESPN, even as "regular" YouTube videos live in a totally different app.</p><p>"It goes to show the quality of production," Burns said. It's a vote of confidence from YouTube. </p><p>It's also a continued blurring of the line of "what is a TV show," versus a web one, and what that denotes in terms of quality. With Netflix shelling out billions of dollars for original shows, and streaming TV packages like Sling adding digital-first channels such as Cheddar, the difference between linear and digital TV is only getting more complicated. He said he actually had to explain to some of Rooster Teeth's younger fans how to watch him on the show. Why the cofounder of a 250-person video company is 'overjoyed' by YouTube's new cable TV competitor

<p>Twitter is doing a little experiment with its time line, and <a href="http://www.techmeme.com/140817/p7#a140817p7">people on Twitter are freaking out</a>.&#xa0;</p>
<p>Some people have seen tweets that are favorited by friends show up in their timeline.</p>
<p>If you're not familiar with the ins and outs of Twitter, here's what that means. On Twitter, there are a few core things you can do. You can tweet, which is expressing yourself. You can retweet, which just sends out someone else's message to your followers. You can reply, which is answering someone. And you can favorite, which is hitting the little star on a tweet.&#xa0;</p>
<p>Of those actions, the favorite is the least clearly defined. For some people, it's a way of saying, "Cool tweet dude!" For others, it's a way to bookmark a link or a tweet for later reference. For some other people, it's like a head nod, or an acknowledgment. It's a way of saying, "I see you're tweet, though there is no need for me to reply."</p>
<p>Another thing about favorites: They feel the most private of all the aforementioned actions. Until now, they were hard to see by outsiders.</p>
<p>As a result of the favorite being so unclear of meaning, and so inherently personal/private people are a bit panicked that their favorites are going to start populating into people's feeds.&#xa0;</p>
<p>Here's the thing, though. Twitter is always experimenting with Twitter. It always tests things in small batches to see how people react. If it doesn't make sense, Twitter kills it and that's that.</p>
<p>The reaction to this experiment is important for Twitter as a company overall. Earlier this year, we spoke with a source familiar with the company. Our source said Twitter's management thinks Twitter could be so much better, but "<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">they think that it's limited and they don't know how to navigate to the new thing without breaking the old thing."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In other words, Twitter can be too cautious with its product because it doesn't want to upset the vocal minority of users who think something as small as inserting favorited tweets into the timeline will destroy what Twitter built.&#xa0;</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For what it's worth, it looks like Twitter employees are sticking up for themselves and this experiment on Twitter:</span></p>

However, the mobile apps for YouTube and Google+ were used by 35% and 30% of smartphone users respectively, which means that Google owns three of the four most widely used apps on smartphones. </span></p>
