What is more offensive and derogatory – a name that is spoken with some affection though sometimes with ignorance wrapped around, or the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Shiv+Sena">Shiv Sena</a> asking Biharis, workers from UP and Gujarati businessmen to leave their ‘amchi Mumbai’? Or people in J&amp;K, the NE, and a few other regions calling you ‘Indian’ when you go to these places as tourists? Or the Government in the Centre giving step-motherly treatment to governments in the States and UTs that are under the rule of some other political party? Or the <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword> of <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> saying he is the government in Delhi? Or contest losers on twitter calling me ‘buddha’ and asking me to leave some contest winnings for them? Or words like ‘bong’, ‘punju’, ‘gujju’, ‘madrasi’, ‘sambhar’, ‘<keyword id="1626067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinky">chinky</keyword>’, ‘<keyword id="2959948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thulla">thulla</keyword>’, ‘<keyword id="1256925" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tambi">tambi</keyword>’, and ‘sulla’ directed towards people from one community or the other? 
 Let me first tell you about an incident that I remember from my days in the <keyword id="120637" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Military-Academy">Indian Military Academy</keyword> where we had a sikh friend who was in our course but a couple of years elder and had streaks of grey hair. To top it all he was fond of staying away from pranks and troubles and was forever talking about ethics and remaining on the good side of the law. At some stage someone must have called him ‘buds’ which is like calling a 20-something a grandpa. No, I never called him buds but I did wonder then, as I do now, if there was anything offensive in the word. Most of us loved him and so buds as a form of address reflected affection. But this sikh Gentleman Cadet, despite all his wise outpourings was invariably peeved and did not appreciate his being called buds. I haven’t met him after we left the IMA and so I hope he either got acclimatised to this pet name, if I may call it that… or people just stopped calling him buds in his regiment. 
 
If you think this kind of renaming happens only in India, look beyond our borders and hear ‘paki’, ‘negro’, ‘nigger’, or declared slurs like ‘bin laden’, ‘jehadi, and ‘cabbie’ for Arabs, or ‘jew’ during the nazi heydays, or ‘nazi’ now, or ‘bindi’, ‘desi’, and ‘patel’ for Indians, or ‘dubya’ and ‘jarhead’ for Americans, ‘bubba’, ‘pus’, and ‘gora’ for the whites, ‘nacho’ and ‘taco’ for the Spanish… so from ‘Alibaba’ to ‘zipperhead’ our world is full of interesting innuendoes that need not necessarily spend their lives being calibrated as offensive words. 
 
These are the words that have made life just so much more interesting and injected with laughter… banning them or shunning them is like Modi taking offense to his 56 inch chest quote getting pulled apart and minced to prove some point or the other. 
 The other day <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> referred to the Delhi policeman as a ‘thulla’ and everyone from Bassi to the media howled with displeasure. Come on, we’ve all had umpteen names for Kejriwal and ‘aaptards’ for his party is probably more known than even ‘thulla’. I decided to know more about the word ‘thulla’ and the first interesting derivation was offered by the <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/brfdictionary/glossary/t/thulla">BRFDictionary</a> on the net that said: “The term is used to denote a stereotypical slow moving police constable with a big gut. The origin of this term has to do with the word for a sack made of jute fiber, which is "thula" in some languages in the Eastern part of India. As it happens, police constables in many states in India are issued a brown starched uniform that looks like it was made from a sack. Hence the word for "jute sack" was morphed into slang for "police".” By the way, our policemen aren’t just ‘thullas’ but are also ‘mamas’ and ‘pandus’… and our <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movies make sure that we don’t ever forget these dear words. The online dictionary for Hindi words was predictably less brave and avoided any reference to this word which is ridiculous because the word is as much a part of the language as any other and deserves a place in history… I mean, do we just let lovely and much used (sometimes abused) words fade away and disappear? 
 
I don’t think it is great idea to go guns blazing at all these forms of address that we classify as slur words… let them live their lives, accept them, and soon enough you’ll know that like ‘Uncle Tom’, ‘spook’, and ‘shine’ every word becomes a part of the glorious history of civilization. 
 
The story of Chinky, Thulla, and Tambi is as interesting as is the story behind any other word in any other language and thus needs to be kept alive.

A Korean customer is <a href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/04/18/new-jersey-woman-claims-cvs-worker-used-asian-slur-on-receipt/http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/04/18/new-jersey-woman-claims-cvs-worker-used-asian-slur-on-receipt/">suing CVS</a> after receiving a receipt with her name printed as "Ching Chong Lee."
The customer, Hyan Lee, said that she used her own name when ordering photos online, but received a receipt printed with the racial slur, <a href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/04/18/new-jersey-woman-claims-cvs-worker-used-asian-slur-on-receipt/">CBS New York reported.</a>
After complaining, a CVS employee apologized and claimed the person would be "counseled and trained," according to CBS. 
Lee is seeking $1 million from the company for the distress the incident caused. 
A company spokesperson told CBS that he couldn't comment on pending litigation. He did say that the pharmacy has a strict no-discrimination policy. 
The CVS story shows how one employee's bad decision can embarrass the entire brand. 
Hooters <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hooters-girl-is-latest-racist-hostess-2012-9">was in hot water</a> after a Korean couple sued because "Chinx" was written on their receipt. 
And a Papa John's customer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/papa-johns-racial-slur-lady-chinky-eyes-2012-1">complained last year</a> after employees allegedly wrote "Lady Chinky Eyes" on the receipt. 
That woman didn't sue, but she did complain about the company on Twitter.

Customer Sues CVS For Writing 'Ching Chong' On Her Receipt

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>In a scandal that grows more dizzying by the day, ex-Cardiff City manager <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730307/Malky-Mackay-Iain-Moody-investigated-FA-sexist-racist-homophobic-text-messages-time-Cardiff.html">Malky Mackay and team executive Iain Moody are under investigation by English soccer's governing body</a> for allegedly sending racist and offensive text messages.
The scandal involves revenge, racism, botched PR management, and, of course, soccer. 
Here's the full story (it's a bit convoluted, but stick with us):
Mackay and Moody were both fired from Cardiff City last season. After they were gone, Cardiff owner Vincent Tan launched an investigation into <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/picturegalleries/11047836/Malky-Mackay-v-Vincent-Tan-eight-transfers-which-started-the-row.html">eight transfers that he deemed too expensive</a>. During the course of that investigation, Cardiff got access to thousands of staff text messages and emails. <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730307/Malky-Mackay-Iain-Moody-investigated-FA-sexist-racist-homophobic-text-messages-time-Cardiff.html">According to the Daily Mail</a>, a number of the texts allegedly exchanged between Mackay, Moody, and other executives were racist, homophobic, and otherwise offensive in nature.
In one text, <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730307/Malky-Mackay-Iain-Moody-investigated-FA-sexist-racist-homophobic-text-messages-time-Cardiff.html">Mackay allegedly replied,</a> "Fkn chinkys" after Cardiff signed a South Korean player in the summer of 2012.
Those texts were found last spring.
Fast forward to August of 2014.
Moody was now sporting director at a different EPL club, Crystal Palace. When Crystal Palace's manager abruptly resigned on the eve of the 2014-15 season, Mackay was <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/499819/Malky-Mackay-favourite-to-take-over-at-Crystal-Palace">considered a frontrunner for the job</a>.
Then, when it looked like Mackay was on the brink of getting hired, Cardiff <a href="http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/cardiff-city-send-malky-mackay-7646899">turned over a "dossier"</a> to the Football Association that contained the alleged racist texts. Many have speculated that the timing by Cardiff was deliberate.
In the span of 48 hours, Mackay <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/aug/20/crystal-palace-malky-mackay-managerial-cardiff-city-glenn-hoddle">pulled out of consideration for the job</a>, the Daily Mail published the texts, and <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730659/Iain-Moody-resigns-Crystal-Palace-role-exchanging-shocking-texts-Malky-Mackay.html">Moody resigned</a> from Crystal Palace.
The scandal wasn't over.
After the texts leaked on Thursday, the League Managers Association issued <a href="http://www.leaguemanagers.com/news/news-7418.html">a poorly-worded apology on behalf of Mackay</a>. They called the texts "friendly text message banter" and said Mackay was just blowing off steam.
Enraged by the tone of the apology, Cardiff<a href="http://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/news/article/club-statement-on-lma-1858687.aspx"> issued their own statement</a> calling for the head of the LMA to resign:
"We therefore find it entirely reprehensible that the LMA should itself put out a statement which seeks to dismiss deeply offensive racist comments as 'friendly banter'
"If that is the view held by the LMA, as appears from its statement, we consider that Richard Bevan's position is untenable and we call for his resignation."
On Friday, <a href="http://www.leaguemanagers.com/news/news-7419.html">the LMA deleted the original apology and apologized for it</a>, writing:
"The LMA apologises for some of its wording, in its release yesterday, which was inappropriate and has been perceived to trivialise matters of a racist, sexist or homophobic nature. That was certainly not our intention."
In the latest twist, Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/aug/22/harry-redknapp-malky-mackay">has come out in support of Mackay</a>.
Redknapp defended Mackay by saying he wasn't a rapist or a murderer. Here's <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/aug/22/harry-redknapp-malky-mackay">what he told the Guardian</a>:
"He's not murdered anyone, he's not a rapist or a paedophile. He's made a big mistake. It shouldn't finish his life or his football career. It's going to take time for him to get back into the game. People get second chances in life who have committed bad crimes. Why shouldn't he? He's made a mistake but we're not going to hang him for it, are we? Given time his life has to go on. Hopefully he'll learn from the silly mistakes he's made.

"It shouldn't finish his life, should it? He's a young man and a top manager. I feel really sad and sorry for what he's done. I'm sure no one is suffering like him and his family are today."
The scandal appears to be dying down as of Friday. But judging by what we've seen so far, you can't rule out another key figure sticking his foot in his mouth.

An Insane Text Message Scandal Is Taking Over The English Soccer World

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Ex-Cardiff City manager Malky MacKay and former team executive Iain Moody <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730307/Malky-Mackay-Iain-Moody-investigated-FA-sexist-racist-homophobic-text-messages-time-Cardiff.html">allegedly exchanged racist and offensive texts, some of which were about players</a>, Matt Lawler of the Daily Mail reports.
In one text, MacKay allegedly responded to the 2012 signing of South Korean player Kim Bo-kyung by texting Moody, "Fkn chinkys. ... Fk it. There's enough dogs in Cardiff for us all to go around."
The texts - which were found when Cardiff conducted an investigation into player transfer activity under Moody last spring - have been reported to the Football Association, English soccer's governing body. The <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/cardiff-city/11047311/Malky-Mackay-and-Iain-Moody-to-be-investigated-by-Football-Association-over-sexist-and-racist-texts.html">FA has launched an investigation</a> into the texts, the Telegraph reports.
Moody <a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28880830">resigned from his new job at Crystal Palace</a> on Wednesday. MacKay, who had been the frontrunner to take over the vacant Palace manager position, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/aug/20/crystal-palace-malky-mackay-managerial-cardiff-city-glenn-hoddle">abruptly pulled out of consideration for the job</a>.
The other damning texts aren't attributed to a specific person, but were allegedly sent by MacKay, Moody, or another team executive, Lawler reports. Here are the rest of <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2730307/Malky-Mackay-Iain-Moody-investigated-FA-sexist-racist-homophobic-text-messages-time-Cardiff.html">the alleged offensive texts, as described by the Daily Mail report</a>:
"In reference to the prominent football agent, Phil Smith, a text states: 'Go on, fat Phil. Nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers.' The Israeli club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, are also referred to simply as 'the Jews.'
"A football official at another club is referred to as 'a gay snake' and 'the homo' and someone who is 'not to be trusted,' while a French player is someone 'who struck me as an independently minded young homo.'
"On August 16, 2012, a list of players proposed by a French agent is forwarded, stating to Mackay that 'he needs to rename his agency the All Blacks.' A separate text in reference to a list of French players states: 'Not many white faces amongst that lot but worth considering.'
"In a separate exchange a picture entitled 'Black Monopoly' is sent, with every square a 'Go To Jail' square. Of one African player, it is stated: 'Doesn't look like a good cv. And he's Nigerian.'"
To make matters worse, the League Managers Association - the coaches union that represents Premier League coaches - <a href="http://www.leaguemanagers.com/news/news-7418.html">issued a poorly-thought-out statement on behalf of MacKay</a>.
The statement calls the texts "friendly text message banter."
It also makes McKay's apology conditional, saying, "If Malky has caused any offence by these two isolated matters he would, however, wish to sincerely apologise."
Here's the entire statement (emphasis ours):
"The LMA wish to clarify the position in relation to recent reports and speculation regarding matters alleged to have arisen during Malky Mackay's time at Cardiff City FC. 
"In the course of a search by the Club in early 2014 of 10,000 private text messages sent to and from another member of staff during Mr Mackay's employment at Cardiff, in relation to other matters, it emerged that Malky had, it seems, sent a couple of one line texts that were, with the benefit of hindsight, very regrettable and disrespectful of other cultures. These were two text messages sent in private at a time Malky felt under great pressure and when he was letting off steam to a friend during some friendly text message banter. That said, Malky believes he could and should have conducted himself better on these two isolated occasions. The precise details need to remain private for the time being until any FA process is complete.
"The LMA does not condone in any way any potential breach of equal opportunities laws but would also point out that out of over 10,000 text messages and 70,000 documents produced over a long period of time it may not be a complete surprise that some inappropriate comments can sometimes be made by employees, like Malky, working under great pressure in highly charged situations. If Malky has caused any offence by these two isolated matters he would, however, wish to sincerely apologise. 
"Malky finds it strange that these matters were only raised with the FA and in the media now, eight months after his employment ended and the day before he was reported as being offered the opportunity to become manager of Crystal Palace FC. 
"Malky is also very concerned about seriously inaccurate and misleading reports of his alleged involvement in these matters in the media. It has never been alleged that he wrote any homophobic or sexist messages and he has confirmed that he did not do so. Further, there are incorrect and damaging suggestions that he sent a whole host of offensive and unpleasant messages that are simply not true and which give a grossly distorted and unfair view of Malky's involvement in this matter. Malky looks forward to matters being put straight in due course, following any investigation of this matter. 
"Malky cannot of course comment on the nature of any conduct or communications alleged to have been made by others. 
"Malky has said that he will be fully co-operating with any FA investigation and that he looks forward to putting the record straight thereafter."
McKay was controversially fired as Cardiff manager in December of 2013. Moody was fired two months before that. Cardiff went on to be relegated from the Premier League, and is currently playing in England's second division.
