New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.

FPIs withdraw record Rs 94,000 cr from Indian equities in Oct on attractive Chinese valuations

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

FII stake in Indian equities dips to a 12-year low

Tensions in Middle-East are rapidly inching closer to their zenith, with Iran firing about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel late yesterday night. In response today, the Indian markets witnessed their worst decline in two months, with Sensex dipping around 1,769 points, or 2.1% to close at 82,497.10. <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> followed suit and was also down by 2.1% to close the day at 25,250.10. As a result, about Rs 11 lakh crore were wiped off the market today. The decline was broad-based, with sectors like realty (dipped by over 4%) auto, and energy suffering the most. Broader indices also fell, losing nearly 2% each. The Hang Seng index, which had rallied over 14% during the last week, largely on the back of various stimulus measures announced by the central bank to stir consumption in the Chinese economy, also slumped around 1.47%. With the possibility of an all-out war between Iran and Israel looming on the horizon, threatening to happen sooner than later, markets are expected to remain volatile in near future. Even the India VIX, seen as a gauge of uncertainty and investor fear in the market, jumped over 9% during the day. The war could throw a huge spanner on India's crude oil import plans. As of August 2024, about 44.6% of India's crude oil imports came from <keyword id="19904316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="middle-east" source="keywords">Middle East</keyword>. Israel has already promised significant retaliation, in response to Iran's attack in the days to come. And the strong possibility of a full-blown Israeli attack in Middle East, particularly major oil fields in Iran has sent the crude oil prices surging. Closer home, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) was amongst the biggest gainers on NSE today. <h2>Should Indian investors worry? </h2>But is the impending action in Middle-East the only reason behind today's drastic fall? Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP, Research &amp; Advisory at Master Capital Services notes that while it plays a significant role, other factors are also at play. "Recent regulatory changes in the F&amp;O segment by SEBI is expected to impact trading volumes, as retail participation may decline due to the increased contract size and limits on weekly expiries. Meanwhile, strength in the Chinese market, following the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) stimulus package, has also diverted foreign investment to China, where valuations remain more attractive compared to India", he noted. But Upadhyay believes that the extension of losses in Indian markets wont last long. "From a technical perspective, as long as prices hold above the 25,250–25,100 zone, any decline could present an opportunity to build fresh long positions. A stock-specific approach is advisable, with sectors such as Oil, IT, PSU Banks, Metals, and Chemicals likely to outperform in the coming days", he adds. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities observes that as long as market is trading below 25,365/82,800, the weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the down side, it could slip till 25,150-25,025/82,200-82,000 as well. On the other side, one quick technical pullback is likely if the market succeeds to trade above 25,365/82,800. Above the same, it could bounce back till 25,475-25,500/83,100-83,300. White House also emphasised that it continues to consult with its partners and allies who are facing similar threats from China’s unfair trade practices and are keen on taking action. If more and more global markets restrict entry of Chinese products, the risk of the majority of such products being dumped in neighbouring India increases drastically. Trying to block Chinese excess production "is like squeezing a balloon. Opportunity may come in China also with retaliation, provided we have market access in products targeted by China," Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), told ANI. However, China is not likely to retaliate against the US tariffs at the moment, say experts, though the country’s Ministry of Commerce said it would take 'resolute measures to safeguard its own rights and interests' "China's economy is fragile. With household spending and the property market on the wane, manufacturing for export markets is one of its few bright spots. Beijing will not want to cut off its nose to spite its face. More broadly, China is desperately trying to encourage new foreign investment. Rash retaliatory action could spoil its case," Moody's Analytics explained in a recent report. Out of China's USD 420 billion exports to the US, only USD 18 billion is impacted due to the latest hike in tariffs — representing slightly over 4% and therefore considered marginal. But Sahai says that this market will continue to grow with time and provides an opportunity to India and other competitors to chip in the supply gap. Ajay Srivastava, the founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), also echoes Sahai’s opinions. He emphasised that the increased duties on Chinese face masks, syringes, needles, medical gloves, and natural graphite offer a substantial opportunity for India, as quoted by ANI. "By ramping up production and export of these in-demand products, India could enhance its trade footprint in the US market," he added. In terms of products like electric vehicles and semiconductors, India remains a net importer, and therefore, may not be in a position to capitalise right now. In the long term, however, as India begins semiconductor production at scale in 2025, there will be opportunities to export some of it to the US and other European countries, offering fresh impetus for domestic manufacturing. As the security risks associated with importing Chinese semiconductors prompts more and more trade barriers from the Western countries, demand for supply from India is likely to grow. Efforts are already underway for the establishment of four large semiconductor plants in India, with three located in Gujarat and one in Assam. Last fiscal year, Indian exports to the US dipped marginally by 1.32 per cent to $77.5 billion as against $78.54 billion in 2022-23. The new development now gives an unique opportunity to turn the tide over the next few years. Overall, some sectors like steel and aluminium do face a serious challenge due to the fresh US tariffs on Chinese products. In 2023, China's central bank bought 225 tons of gold, per the World Gold Council. Last month, China's gold reserve rose by 5 tons, taking the country's total stash to 2,262 tons. <h2>China has overtaken India as the world's <keyword id="21389468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="largest-gold-buyer" source="Orion">largest gold buyer</keyword></h2>Since China is now home to swarms of gold bugs, the country has decidedly overtaken India as the world's largest buyer of the commodity. The two economies have been jostled in the top spots for years, but China's buying spree last year put India behind. Last year, China's demand for gold jewelry rose 10%, to 630 tons acquired, while India's purchases fell 6%, to 562 tons, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gold.org/goldhub/research/gold-demand-trends/gold-demand-trends-full-year-2023">World Gold Council.</a> US consumers were a far third place, buying just 136 tons of gold jewelry in 2023. It's not just China. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gold.org/goldhub/data/gold-reserves-by-country">World Gold Council data</a> shows other central banks,includingPoland and Singapore, have also been snapping up gold to hedge against global economic uncertainties. India's central bank bought 16.2 tons of gold last year. The US did not add any gold to its reserves. However, the US already has the world's largest gold holdings, with about 8,134 tons of the precious metal — far more than second-place Germany, which holds 3,352 tons of the commodity. Despite the gold rush, Georgette Boele, an economist at Dutch bank ABN AMRO, warned about going all-in on the commodity amid record-high prices in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.abnamro.com/research/en/our-research/gold-watch-the-sky-seems-the-limit-for-gold-prices">April 15 note.</a> "The trend in gold prices is positive and the sky seems to be the limit. However we remain cautious," wrote Boele. She highlighted a seeming paradox in the market: High US interest rates would typically keep gold prices muted, but the opposite is happening. "Even though these changes have occurred in the past, they tend to be temporary in nature meaning that they could last around three to six months," wrote Boele. Lofty gold prices now doesn't mean there's a supply crunch, she wrote. "The amount of central bank buying is not justifying gold prices at current levels," she wrote. Based on that assessment, she said she's keeping her forecast of $2,000 per ounce of gold at the end of 2024, below the current going rate around $2,400.

HonorTech will relaunch the Honor brand of smartphones in the country in September with plans to initially invest ₹1,000 crore in the business, a senior company official said. For the relaunch, HonorTech is going to work under a licensing deal with Chinese smart devices company Honor. HonorTech CEO <keyword id="6530659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhav-Sheth" source="Orion">Madhav Sheth</keyword> told PTI that the company will aim to garner 4-5% market share in terms of volume by end of next year, which will translate to a revenue of ₹10,000 crore for the company. "HonorTech is a completely Indian entity. We are going to work under a licensing deal with Honor where they will license us and we will do everything from sales to manufacturing in India. No royalty will go to Honor," Sheth said. Honor brand was launched and owned by Chinese telecom major Huawei which sold it to another Chinese firm Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology in November 2020. Sheth recently quit Realme where he was steering their international business including India. He has formed his own joint venture, HonorTech, with PSAV Global owned by entrepreneur C P Khandelwal. "Honor's 70% manufacturing is completely automatic and 40% of their machinery is completely made by them. We need to match similar standards with them in India. Under the deal, Honor will help us with product know-how, entire supply chain management, technology transfers, software transfers at a defined cost," Sheth added. He said that the company will initially get some of the Honor products to test the Indian market and plans to start manufacturing them locally by end of this year. "We will launch Honor smartphones from next month onwards. We are in talks with electronics manufacturing services who are eligible for PLI (production-linked incentive) for manufacturing. We are targeting to start shipping "Made in India" products from November or December," Sheth said. The company plans to raise ₹1,000 crore in debt funding that will be invested by next year. "We are looking at revenue of ₹10,000 crore by end of next year which translates into 4-5 per cent volume market share," Sheth added. With inputs from PTI. HonorTech to relaunch Honor brand of phones, to invest ₹1,000 crore

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Apple has outsold its biggest rival, Huawei, in China and is poised to take more market share. </li><li>But it plans to move manufacturing away from China after supply chain issues.</li></ul>There are two sides to Apple's relationship with China.On the one hand, Apple seems to be considering shifting its supply chain out of China to protect the company from supply chain disruptions like the one that temporarily shut down its factories in November, an effort that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-made-in-china-moving-manufacturing-2022-12">may take decades</a>.On the other hand, China is now one of Apple's biggest consumer markets and one of the few remaining countries where it could win more market share relatively cheaply.Based on market intelligence firm IDC data, Apple sold 33 million units from the first to the third quarter of 2022, up 50% from the same period in 2019. One in five iPhones Apple makes now ships to China. But per the IDC, <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prAP48830922">nearly 330 million smartphones were sold in China in 2021</a>. Apple, which enjoys about 50% market share in the US and many other countries, still has room to run in China. So far, in the three quarters of 2022, 212 million smartphones have been sold in China, with Apple taking a 15% share. In the third quarter alone, <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prAP49810522">Apple sold 10.8 million phones</a> and was the fourth largest-selling brand in the country. <h2>Apple willing to play ball with China's government</h2>While pursuing the Chinese consumer, Apple has made concessions to the Chinese government. In November, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-restricted-airdrop-capabilities-in-china-ahead-of-protests-2022-11">Apple limited the use of its AirDrop feature</a> amid protests around China's "zero COVID" policy. Last year, reports revealed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tim-cook-275-billion-china-deal-regulatory-crackdown-report-2021-12">Apple CEO Tim Cook made a $275 million deal with China</a> in 2016, promising to source more materials from Chinese companies and help advance Chinese software manufacturing. Apple seems content to court controversy in the US by offering end-to-end iCloud encryption, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-criticizes-encryption-after-apple-announces-increased-iphone-icloud-security-2022-12">despite the outcry of the FBI.</a> But in China, it <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/technology/apple-china-censorship-data.html">offloaded iCloud servers to a Chinese state-owned company to comply with Chinese regulations. </a>To be fair, the company has also bowed to US government pressure. <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Tech/Semiconductors/Apple-freezes-plan-to-use-China-s-YMTC-chips-amid-political-pressure">Nikkei</a> reported Apple abandoned plans to use chips from Chinese government-backed Yangtze Memory Technologies over pressure from the US government.<h2>A luxury brand gaining ground</h2>Nabila Popal, research director of the Worldwide Tracker Team at ID, said Apple's growth in China has been tremendous, especially on the back of the success of the iPhone 12 to 14. Still, it remains a brand only for a select few."Apple is also a luxury or high-end brand, and it only operates on the higher end of the price band compared to other brands," Popal said. Apple's biggest competitor in the premium smartphone market is Huawei, once the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-overtakes-samsung-as-global-leader-in-smartphone-shipments-2020-7">top-selling mobile phone manufacturer in the world</a>. The US government <a href="http://businessinsider.com/new-us-sanctions-to-slam-huawei-further-roil-tech-supply-2020-8">placed sanctions on Huawei</a> after the Trump administration accused the company of spying, restricting access to American-made chips. Subsequently, Huawei saw its phone shipments drop by 40% in the fourth quarter of last year. With Huawei's decline, consumers looking for a $1,000 premium smartphone have no choice but to buy an iPhone. Other brands in China have had a hard time breaking into the premium market. Popal said Huawei was the first Chinese brand to shake off the perception that Chinese phones were cheap. She noted that brands like Oppo and Xiaomi found more success catering to a more middle-class market. IDC said Apple now ranks fourth in terms of market volume in China behind Vivo, Oppo, and Honor.<h2>Where the brand loyalty lies</h2>What is not clear is how much China's consumer market values Apple. The robust buying power of Chinese consumers has attracted many top foreign brands to China's shores. But China's marketplace has been known to squeeze out foreign competition to champion domestic and more government-aligned businesses during periods of high nationalism.Just look at what happened to Nike and Adidas. Both companies announced they <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-xinjiang-cotton-retailers/nike-adidas-join-brands-feeling-chinese-social-media-heat-over-xinjiang-idUSKBN2BH0Q3">wouldn't source cotton and other products from the Xinjiang</a> region of China, where the government is accused of having forced labor camps for Uyghurs, a Chinese Muslim ethnic group. In 2021, when the government responded to Western sanctions with its own, Chinese citizens behind the act called for a boycott of the foreign brands who negatively commented on the country's affairs. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2022-china-nationalistic-online-shoppers/">Adidas and Nike's sales tanked</a>, and local players swooped in to pick up new customers.Apple is eager to avoid that fate. Tim Cook has criticized companies like Meta and Google for collecting information on their users. "This is surveillance," he said at a privacy conference in Brussels. "This should make us very uncomfortable. It should unsettle us." But Cook and Apple will likely continue to remain silent on <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/technology/apple-china-censorship-data.html">China's own surveillance policies</a>. It has repeatedly promised to "strictly abide by Chinese laws and regulations," and repeatedly removed apps that <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/apple-china-censorship-apps-flag/">have run afoul of the Chinese government</a>. Tim Cook spoke to China Daily, a state-owned Chinese newspaper, praising China for having "one of the most vibrant developer communities in the entire world." Apple regularly gets a round of bad press in the US, with <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/11/30/apples-cowardice-on-china-reveals-app-store-twitter-ban-as-pure-hypocrisy/">media outlets</a> and <a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/hawley-demands-apple-condemn-ccp-covid-crackdown-reduce-reliance-foreign-labor">politicians calling out Apple </a>for perceived hypocrisy. But with <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/467160/forecast-of-smartphone-users-in-china/">hundreds of millions of</a> potential customers left to convert to iPhone users in China, Apple will absorb the hits. Apple may not need Chinese factory workers. But, it's made the calculation that it very much needs the Chinese consumer.

New Delhi [India], March 6 (<keyword id="19904948" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ani" source="keywords">ANI</keyword>): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint against 299 accused persons and entities (including 76 Chinese-controlled entities) and two other entities controlled by other foreign nationals in an ongoing money laundering case, the agency said on Wednesday. The case is linked to the duping of gullible investors who were promised astronomical returns on investing money (claimed to be used for mining bitcoins and other crypto Currencies) for which an app-based token by the name of "<keyword id="19984854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hpz-token" source="keywords">HPZ Token</keyword>" was used. The prosecution complaint filed before a Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Nagaland's Dimapur named 299 accused persons and 78 entities. Out of the total entities named in the prosecution complaint, 76 are Chinese-controlled entities (in which 10 directors are of Chinese origin) and two other entities are controlled by other foreign nationals. The court took cognizance of the offence of money laundering in the prosecution complaint on Tuesday after finding that a prima-facie case has been made under PMLA, 2002, against the said 299 accused persons. ED initiated an investigation based on an FIR registered by Cyber Crime Police Station, <keyword id="20214444" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kohima" source="keywords">Kohima</keyword> (Nagaland) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the <keyword id="20003647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act" source="keywords">Information Technology Act</keyword>, concerning the duping of gullible investors who were promised astronomical returns on investing money [claimed to be used for mining of bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies], for which an app-based token by the name of "HPZ Token" was used. The ED investigation revealed that various bank accounts and merchant IDs were opened by various shell entities having dummy directors and proprietors only for the rotation and layering of proceeds of crime representing funds fraudulently received for illegal online gaming betting and investment in <keyword id="19899404" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitcoin" source="keywords">Bitcoin</keyword> mining. For an investment of Rs 57,000, returns of Rs 4,000 per day for three months were promised but money was paid only once and thereafter, fresh funds were sought. Earlier, ED conducted search operations at 44 locations throughout the country and an amount of Rs 176.67 crore, maintained by shell entities in various banks and virtual accounts, was frozen. Further movable and immovable properties to the extent of Rs 278.70 crore held in the name of dummy entities were attached. Total seizure and attachment stand at Rs 455.37 crore in the case so far.
